Coach and Horses in Islington

Went for a roast with friends. I had the pork belly with sage and onion stuffing to the tune of £27. This was probably the worst roast I’d had in a very long time. The plate was doused in a very watery gravy and pork crackling itself was soggy and there was literally no pork meat. I consumed maybe a sliver of meat and the rest was just stuffing and pork fat. The potatoes were not freshly made and tasted like they were cooked the day before. Outside of the roast being so bad, the service and staff were attentive. We did send back the chocolate brownie biscuit desserts as it was rock hard and I would have lost a tooth trying to eat it. Won’t be returning, overpriced and not worth the cost.

Loved the actual pub. Very warm and cosy and tastefully designed. Generally very clean and tidy. The ladies toilet was quite dirty with loo paper all over the floor and a filthy toilet seat however. The table staff were very friendly, considerate and attentive, if not very inexperienced (eg - we ordered bread with the starters, which arrived when we had nearly finished our main course, and we were still charged £5). The majority of the food was delicious. I loved my belly pork and trimmings. The gravy was particularly spectacular! I did ask for more and was charged £2 for it which was a surprise. My daughter’s half a roast chicken wasn’t cooked properly and had to be sent back. Unfortunately therefore her plate of veggies and potatoes were stone cold when the chicken was brought back to the table - the rest of us had also nearly finished our main courses. The puddings were excellent. The cheesecake specifically was great. When the bill arrived, no consideration had been made for the chicken. Nor for the cold veggies and potatoes (which were not replaced). We also still charged for the bread which was served way after our mains arrived and was to go with the starter, and we were charged another £2 for extra gravy which was used to try and warm up my daughters vegetables! The management appeared not to notice any disparity during the lunch - despite the embarrassment of the table staff who kept apologising. Someone please speak with the manager to ensure he gets his house in order!

Came here with my family and girlfriend. The food was good but what really stood out was the service, made our dinner reservation so much more enjoyable. I forgot his name but the Polish waiter was a class act.

A very very good sunday roast. Sits in time outs top roasts in London and it didn't disappoint. Nice pub too.

A whole new experience for us: a cozy four-room upmarket retreat over an 18th C pub cum French-style bistro on a quiet cobblestone lane in dynamic Clerkenwell. And a whole spectrum of great restaurants within blocks, access to everything in London easy, by tube (including the state-of-the-art new Elizabeth line), or by foot – our favorite a quick trot via St. Paul’s over the Thames Millennium Footbridge to the National, the Globe, the Tate Modern and the restaurants and shops of the not-to-be-missed centuries-old Borough Market. The Coach so nice to come home to after a day – or night – of adventuring, thanks to Michael, Faidra and a warm, welcoming staff, who treated us like family, and – spoiled boys that we are – catered to our every whim. A most memorable eight-day stay.

Heading to Gatwick tonight I decided to grab Sunday lunch here today. The staff seemed very miserable chatting amongst themselves. I asked for the beef to be well done, it arrived pale and slightly pink and fatty however the worst part was the missing horseradish and instead a bland butter sauce smeared across the plate that I had to eat around. Having been a loyal visitor for here for many years as work locally I must admit it was very disappointing. No one asked whether I enjoyed it, just took the half eaten plate away! I wasn’t offered a desert either. Granted I was a solo diner but should not be treated differently than anyone else!

Greeted with a warm welcome. Our Room was nicely presented - air conditioning was a bonus as we were experiencing a heatwave. There was a fridge but unfortunately no milk, I’m sure if we asked it would have been delivered. We loved the design of the bathroom, but some might think quirky, the smaller shower head pipe needed replacing but it didn’t matter as the main shower head was great! Would defo recommend a stay if you’re in the part of town, we didn’t get chance to dine but we will be back. Thank you, great job.

Great location, 10 mins from tube station. Friendly staff. Modern and clean. Mini fridge in room. Bathroom/wet room a little small but functional. Tea and coffee facilities but our coffee machine was broken & we had to ask for milk.

We had an excellent meal here. The menu had obviously been designed with care and a lot of work went into their preparation. The combination of texture and flavours was great. Some of the items were a bit different from expected- but in a good way. For example, gazpacho would normally be soup with garnish but in this case was more like garnish with soup! Very tasty indeed. For mains, we had the bouillabaisse and the vegetarian risotto both of which were excellent. The drinks were well priced and the service friendly and efficient. The only shame was that there were so few people there on a Saturday night. I hope it gets more customers during the week. It certainly deserves to.

Ce pub a incontestablement du charme : belles salles , verrières ,… Service efficace et souriant . Et surtout , la cuisine est bien différente de celle d’un pub ordinaire . C’est une carte très européenne qui est proposée avec foie gras , gravlax , pieuvre ou bouillabaisse , par exemples . Le résultat est souvent réussi , sans atteindre des sommets et c’est joliment présenté. Certains plats manquent de caractère et sont un peu fades .

I was a bit disappointed by the menu at the Coach and felt it was overpriced for what it was, pub fare. My main course of lamb looked like slop and I felt it was inedible. The added bits were all of the same texture and the chips overcooked so that they were brown and soggy. I also felt there was a certain amount of penny pinching going on as the goat cheese starter had hardly any salad to speak of. On the plus side the sorbet was good as was the wine list. I wouldn't bother going again.

The Coach serves an amazing Sunday roast, very generous, almost too generous looking at the size of the plates it’s difficult to finish ! But you will not be disappointed. The place looks great with the Veranda, and you can even eat outside when sunny days come.

Booked and paid for 2 rooms for 2 couples via online travel agent. Arrived at premises to be told only 1 room booked. Manager then managed to change some guests into other accommodation so that both couples could stay. Off we went thinking all was sorted to arrive back after midnight to find that they had given us keys to the same room. Attempted to find an emergency contact number to no avail. Also tried to find another hotel room but no luck. So, 2 couples in there 50's sharing 1 room was not good. The bathroom facilities, although lovely and modern had glass doors - not very private when sharing with others. So, 2 women shared bed and the 2 men bedded down on piles of towels on the floor. Absolutel crap night had by all. In the morning, we left a note for the management telling them what had happened and asked them to contact us, but they never did so no apology. Completely ruined our weekend. Can't believe that they could be so incompetent when they only have 4 rooms to look after.

We were staying here for a week and couldn't be more happier!The room was very clean and bright but the most important thing for us was all members of staff in charge of Michal who looked after us .Food was great but the guys were even better(they made our stay better then we could ever imagine) .We will be definitely back this summer if not earlier! In a fantastic location, the decor and vibe was brilliant for a Saturday evening meal. We had heard great things about the food and presentation and we weren’t disappointed. And as great as the wine was, the service completely soured our experience. We were mis-sold on portion sizes - we were told the £50 Chateaubriand was to be shared to find that it could barely feed one person. Similarly, the side-dishes we ordered were incorrect and brought 10 minutes after the main course.These errors were blamed on waiter inexperience, but instead of an apology and working to fix the situation as you’d expect, the manager treated it as a matter of habit. We got 25% off our main course and a few awkward jokes to salvage the service charge. It was all very disappointing. If only the service was nearly as good as everything else.

El servicio fue impecable en todo momento.

Lunch at 12.30 and by 13.00 the place was full (on a Thursday). We skipped starters and went for a steak and rabbit leg (with a mustard cream sauce and alsatian bacon) with chips. The quality of the food and cooking were both high (chips were v good). Then we stuffed ourselves with clafoutis and honey cake. With a large (250ml) glass of wine each and coffee it came to a fairly steep £50 each.

A friend and I both had the rabbit leg in mustard sauce with potatoes. The rabbit was delicious, the mustard sauce divine. The restaurant is welcoming and friendly. We plan to go back and try different dishes.

I came with my daughters to have a good lunch, a friend of mine recommended the restaurant, first of all the menu was on a printed A4 piece of paper. We chose the duck and the monkfish for 2 , we waited for 20 min, the food came with a good presentation, portion was very small and the prices were extortionate. Overall; extremely expensive for what it is. Very disappointed. Will never come again, and I do not recommend it for anyone.

In London to see a friend after a twenty year gap so there was a lot to talk about. Time to chew the fat over a good Sunday lunch and a glass of wine or two. The Coach has a good selection of real ales and wines with several rooms set aside for dining. We went upstairs to a small and rather narrow room. With wooden floors this all meant that sound reverberated round the room but it was not overpowering. The pleasant waitress gave us time to choose from beef, pork and lamb. We settled on the Herefordshire beef and it came beautifully pink, two large generous slices with some fat but no gristle. It was delicious. Wonderful crisp roast potatoes, some cabbage and a big dish of cheesy leeks was provided as was a large crisp Yorkshire pudding. For £18.95 in central London this was excellent value as well as really good quality.

Had a realy good Sunday lunch here all the food realy good we had shoulder of lamb which is meant to be for 2/3 but whould easily feed 4/5 very good roast potatoes and veg unusual starter nowadays of calf’s brains in black butter would have done credit to Paris bistro under 40 quid a head with wine and service is great value also very calm peacfull atmosphere will return

Usually I love it here but I have to say I will think twice about coming back again. The bar manager was so rude to us last night, I am still fuming about it this morning. You’d have thought we walked into his home and asked for free drinks, not gone into an establishment set up for it and happily willing to pay. Think you’re in the wrong business mate.

The puntarelle were absolutely nice and the duck delicious. Great selection of wine. The staff is great and very kind. After a long working day was the perfect celebration for our project.

Me detuve durante una breve visita a Londres para una cena de domingo y lo pasamos de maravilla. Probamos el carpaccio de ternera, la sopa de apio, el filete de trucha, el cordero con pudín de Yorkshire. Para las bebidas, tuvimos el Savor Dubbel y el London Negroni. Toda la comida era increíble (sin embargo, me pareció que el carpaccio de ternera era demasiado salado). Ambiente encantador, gran servicio. Clerkenwell parece ser un vecindario prometedor con muchas construcciones en curso. Definitivamente planeamos volver durante nuestra próxima visita.

Staying at Zetter. Wanted to eat out. First choice messed up our booking.

El menú en sí tiene un precio razonable con mucha variedad para todos. Tuve los calamares seguidos por el filete de pescado con una piperada. El postre era una crema de caramelo. La comida fue perfectamente ejecutada y de gran calidad. Volvería 100% otra vez.

Me alojé en este maravilloso pub para la víspera de Año Nuevo. No comimos aquí, pero tomamos unas copas en el bar y el ambiente era encantador. ! La comida se veía genial y el restaurante estaba muy ocupado. Ojalá hubiéramos reservado para una comida. Nos alojamos en una habitación doble, estaba impecablemente limpio. El edificio es excelente y no puedo recomendar este lugar lo suficiente. El personal era extremadamente servicial (especialmente el asistente del gerente) y amable e incluso hizo todo lo posible para despedirnos con el desayuno, ya que teníamos que salir temprano. Gracias, definitivamente volveremos.

I went in after a business meeting and sat at the bar along with another gentleman I did not know. The 2 or 3 bar staff never acknowledges our presence, we were only ones there.

Despite the lovely decor very disappointing. £50 sharing meal..frankly not worth more than £25 per head. Ignored dietary requirements for vegan and gluten free. Would not recommend.

Me and my partner chose this lovely place to go for dinner for our 10th anniversary! And we went home so pleased! The bar service was great and upon arrival we got some drinks in the bar area! The atmosphere in the restaurant was so lovely too! Great design and enough space between the tables! Let's me now tell you about the food! This place doesn't offer some average pub food! Oh no! The food that's been served in the restaurant area is magic! We had some starters that were really good and then the main course just left me speechless! My partner had steak which according to him was the best he ever had and I had the sea bass served on top of home made ratatouille! Honestly I haven't indulged a meal this way before! We couldn't eat a dessert but we got amazing digestive drinks in the end! The service we got was also impressive our waiter Vale and the bartender Boris made our dinner and experience unforgettable! Thank you so much for making our night even more special!

We had the loveliest evening at the Coach for my 25th birthday party. Staff were so welcoming and accommodating and seemed like genuinely lovely humans - Katie was looking after us and she was a super fun & professional host. Highly recommend the Coach for any kind of group event. Food was lovely (I had the rabbit). Really impressive decor and atmosphere.

I have visited here twice in the last week and cannot complain about the food quality or the attentiveness of the staff. Last week a course from the mains menu had sold out but they reserved this for our second visit (lamb) which was excellent. The duck hearts and squid I would recommend as well as the apple sorbet with calvados. The only issue was with the bill. They had missed an item off the bill (£46). After some deliberation we decided to point this out and were given the correct bill. After some discussion we asked if some complimentary drinks could be provided as a compensation for being honest which was rejected. We were a party of three. Perhaps we should have been less honest! This would have been a small gesture to reward our honesty. I would still recommend the restaurant but feel that this could have been dealt with better.

Until tonight. Monday, late Autumn, but still a great meal. Although quite an extensive menu, I'd say more for the meat eater. But so good. I had smoked mackerel starter (yes, I know, not meat) and then the duck confit with an awesome potato dish in a really nice sauce cum jus. Apple sorbet with calvados on the side just finished things off perfectly. And I forgot, a Greek (yes, Greek) white wine which was quite delicious. Just off Farringdon Road, so on my way home and I didn't know about it. Well, going to rectify that now!

We went as a group of 9 people and had the most fun and wonderful time at the coach in the upper floor. Especially thanks to the great menu options and the excellent services of Alex our waitress for the night. I'v never had such an attentive, fun and caring waitress who truly seemed to love her job and who knew every little detail about the food, preparations and drinks. If I'd live in London I would go back in a heartbeat.

The Coach is by far a well kept secret. It is a restaurant for which we went out of our way to reach. The Brazilian wait staff is one of the friendliest and perkiest I have met. No pretense and just pure genuine cordiality unlike Nopi. The Coach is more deserving of a Michelin than Nopi. It’s Chef experiments with various parts of the animal without the dollop of sauces that are found in Nopi which take away from the Coach’s fresh active ingredients. What is Nopi hiding with its sauces? You have regular fare at The Coach as well as items for those that like a culinary adventure by taking on Calf brain or duck hearts. The dishes are cooked to perfection and plated in the most eye appealing way. Again no pretense on the part of the Chef and his culinary staff as he’s very comfortable with his status and that of his staff. You do not hear yelling of “yes, Chef” like other megalomaniac chefs after their own egos that border on being short order diner cooks NOT chefs. The dishes yet come timely and perfectly cooked and served by wait staff that is so passionate about their work that they truly recommend dishes that are within a client’s palate. This is the mark of a good wait staff - one that knows the menu and makes recommendations not based on what a Chef wants to ply but on the clients’ actual palate. If there are empty tables you will be seated even without a reservation, again, unlike other restaurants that demand reservations as a precursor to dining when tables are free, these are restaurants full of their own import. The Coach truly is a Michelin deserving star restaurant. How Nopi got it and this restaurant didn’t truly leaves one pondering the whole Michelin guide. If you are in London The Coach deserves a visit.

I stayed here for one night whilst on business.

Excellent traditional french cuisine accompanied by very attentive service, and a spacious eating area (with tables that aren't cramped like in many other establishments), make this a first rate choice not just for a fine meal but also to enjoy dinner table conversation.

Having been a long time admirer of Henry Harris's cooking and eaten many excellent meals at Racine, I was keen to try the Coach. The menu looked great and seemed reasonably priced. Unfortunately the food was both overcooked and over salted. But the worst part of the experience was the noise in the room. It was impossible to have any conversation with my lunch guest and we had to move from the restaurant to the bar between courses. We were closely followed by two other tables who were evidently of similar mind. The plus points were good service and an interesting wine list.

I had a lovely dinner at the Coach with some clients. My waitress, Alex, offered fantastic service. She knew her wine and even offered us a taste before buying. She was so accommodating. The food is great gastropub food and the decor is fab. I will definitely come back.

The food at the coach really was delicious, I couldn’t fault it. We had the charcuterie board and duck parfait to start, these were both amazing! We had the pigeon, rabbit and duck for mains, these were all very nice too. We did find everything to be a bit expensive considering we were in a pub but it was a special occasion, my girlfriend’s birthday, so we thought why not! When booking on their website I did mention the birthday in the ‘Any special requests’ section but obviously this was ignored.

We used to travel all the way from Tower Bridge to Racine, near the Brompton Oratory, regularly, for the wonderful French food. When we heard that the chef-restaurateur behind it had opened The Coach in Clerkenwell we were therefore full of anticipation. It’s so hard to describe what we found. Really good food, service which in its eagerness made up for any lack of experience, but the clientele! They were so exuberantly marketing (?) media types (?) shouting at the top of their voices and flinging their arms about, loving each other and especially themselves, that it was hard to appreciate our food or even hear each other. Please forgive me, fellow customers, if that’s par for the course in your world and you took exception to three boring people from banking, arts admin and early years.

Four friends for lunch. Lovely dining room. Lovely food. Great service. Despite being busy, we didn't feel rushed to vacate the table.

I see that other reviewers complained about the service here but honestly can’t seesee why. The service was exemplary- they put up with our party arriving over an extended period with an extra member and happily reorganised tables. The waiting staff were observant without being intrusive and very helpful. 10/10 for service.

Tuvimos una importante comida de negocios y el restaurante estaba lleno, y nuestra mesa asignado es bastante agobiante. El personal era genial, nos hicieron una mesa en la zona del pub, que tenía más espacio y privacidad. 5 estrellas!

Can’t rate this place worse. After ordering a drink I turned my back and they poured it down the sink and charged me £9.70. Bar staff were rude and unhelpful. Stay away.

Fuimos para el pollo asado para compartir, habría estado bien que han dado algún tipo de cucharas y cuchillo agudo que sirve para tallar pollo, pollo asado patatas frías también muy poco hecha de hecho crudo en el centro. Sentí que era muy caro, he tenido mucho mejor asados domingo por la mitad de precio. De acuerdo con los comentarios anteriores es bastante ruidoso.

Yo era temprano para una reunión y una vi este pub con algunas sillas y mesas fuera muy atractivo con un toldo en un día de calor y vagamos por encima para ver si podía tomar un café y sentarse fuera. Estaban sirviendo el desayuno a un par de personas y yo nos sentamos afuera en la sombra. Servicio de Lenard. El ambiente general de este lugar es muy elegante y cómodo, inodoros de muy buena calidad. Es mucho mejor que un Costa o Pret para la comodidad y el mismo precio, quizás un poco de más caro para un café, también tenía una taza de té. Se sirve en cazuela de China y taza - volveré de nuevo si en Clerkenwell. Me gustaría probar la comida por algún tiempo.

Llamado para comer el domingo ayer por la tarde y hacía un completo. El personal es fantástico y nos cuidaron muy bien. La comida era excepcional. Entre los cuatro nos comimos cordero, ternera y pollo todo era magnífico. Tienen una gran lista de vinos; buena porciones de comida y es un ambiente muy agradable, sin duda, volveremos.

Nos tomamos unas copas antes de cenar en el bar, no hay gran problema allí, pero parecía ser bastante un montón de molienda personal sobre un aspecto un poco perdidos con sólo uno o dos realmente sirve. No tuve que esperar mucho para bebidas (era viernes por la noche, así que bastante ocupado). Me sorprendió ver una parte del personal procedente del bar y el cliente necking disparos con un grupo de gente, asumí que era el cumpleaños de alguien y ella habían pedido a unirse a ellos y/o se había comprado el partido. Luego volvió.
