Highly recommend the tapas night at the coach and horses. The food was absolutely amazing, so many dishes to choose from and so so tasty. Staff there were so welcoming and friendly especially Donna who could not do enough for us, we even had a complementary dish brought out to us which was delicious. We will definitely be returning. Looking forward to trying the Italian night next xx

We often travel to this pub in the summer months for a lovely walk along the canal and a stop off in the picturesque beer garden situated right next to the canal for a cold glass of cider. More recently we have been enjoying evening meals inside the pub where a cosy fire has been lit to take the chill off the winter air and creating a welcoming homely feel. The food served here is outstanding with an amazing selection of fresh fish dishes which are usually only found in coastal locations. Everything is beautifully presented and tastes amazing! The staff are all very friendly and cannot do enough for you always willing to go that extra mile to ensure you have a pleasant experience. The Coach & Horses is a pure gem and we cannot wait to visit again soon.

Very good experience on the Thai night, There were two menus (one for those that didn’t want Thai). We had the four course Thai menu which was superb and tasted very authentic. A spicy soup opener followed by a selection of appetisers (chicken satay skewers were delicious, as were the king prawns). 4 dishes made up the main course which were superb followed by a deep fried banana and coconut cream desert. A lot of great food for the £27 p/h cover. Excellent value for the times we’re in.

We turned up today looking a bit bedraggled after a very wet walk along the canal but were greeted warmly and shown to a table despite not having booked and with an equally wet dog in tow! Both the landlady and waitress were very friendly and welcoming and the food was lovely and reasonably priced. I had the seafood chowder which was delicious, and my sons had the pork belly special and the fish and chips - good sized portions for the price. We will definitely return when in the area again.

We are regulars for family lunch when down from London. Always great hospitality and cooking. Should have written earlier, but today's lunch was just exceptional. "Fish and chips" understates the tempuraresque sole with Sean's tartare sauce. But son and I had best ever fresh "seafood chowder" - a gourmet version of the New England version = spoiler alert.

Very disappointed with some of the plates of food served last night. Three out of the six of us ordered the special chowder. Unfortunately, there was nothing special about it. I would not serve a dish like that in my own home. It looked as though it had been frozen, defrosted, reheated and placed under a heat lamp. A member of staff informed us that it always looks like that. Nobody around the table recognised it as chowder. We were offered to order a different dish.

I can't speak highly enough of our experience at the Coach and Horses on Thurs 5th October. We were on the canal and neither of us has a new-fangled smart phone so we called in to check on availability, booking, etc.. The staff were taking a break but were very quick to book us a table for an hour later. We took ourselves off for a walk before returning. Our orders were taken promptly by a waitress who was very attentive throughout our meal. The menu was varied and mouth-watering - I'd have enjoyed anything on it! We opted for the pork steak with leaks and mustard and the beef and ale open-topped pie. The food arrived quickly (which is what canal travellers often need, as they are on a schedule, though we'd tied up for the night). All was piping hot and an extra bowl of chips arrived. The portions were very generous, though we ate everything on our plates except the pattern! Beer was excellent and there was no music that drowns conversation in so many pubs these days. All around us were also clearly enjoying their food, the prices were very reasonable and the staff friendly and helpful. I just wish the Coach and Horses was nearer to where we live (Devon) as it's a bit of a drive from here for an evening out! Thanks very much!

Just very poor in general, such a strange set up. As you enter, you walk through a little deli area, which is nice....then there’s a random TV playing with people watching and the restaurant area just beyond that. Service was OK, but food was poor in every sense. Badly cooked - very amateur. Considering the area the Coach & Horses are located, they really need to improve drastically in order to compete with neighboring restaurants in Crickhowell & Talybont.Wound not recommend for a meal, useful for a drink in the summer in their beer garden in front of the river, but that’s about it. A real shame.

We travelled July 2019 before the Covid hit us. We were on a 5 week canal holiday, from NZ, and this was to be our last canal on the journey. The Coach & Horses was a short walk from our mooring spot and was extremely busy on a warm sunny evening, and a Sunday at that. We had no trouble acquiring an outside table and were quickly served with delicious meals and drinks. which we enjoyed whilst watching the families of kids paling in the play area across the road. The staff were busy but really friendly and didn't seem phased by the throng of patrons. If I could have a chance I would certainly come back for another great meal at this lovely country pub.

My boyfriend and I went for food on 25th September. We decided to both have the "special" of monkfish, with patatas bravas and greens. It came out and we were disappointed with the presentation, to start with. The monkfish was overcooked. The "patatas bravas" appeared to be deep fried potato cubes with a slight sprinkling of paprika, which tasted like they came from Aldi frozen food section. The "greens" consisted of 3 tiny, overcooked asparagus sprigs. We politely asked the waitress for more greens but she never came back. This terrible meal cost almost £18 per head. We don't mind paying a lot of money for food but for the quality if this meal, they should have charged no more than £5. We will NEVER return which is a shame.

If you are looking for a warm and friendly welcome to take your mind of the current climate then this is not the place for you. We arrived with the Welsh government recommended four households and was immediately told it had to be two households, when asked since when as we had not been told this on booking we were met with “do you not watch the news” and turned away. I understand that some places may have their own rules but these surely would need to be told before arriving or on booking, not to be told at the door that we needed to watch the news when in fact the owners themselves should be watching the news. Haven’t eaten at this establishment and don’t think we ever will, couldn’t not recommend enough.

Lovely welcome and seriously good seafood chowderAfter calling round pretty much all of the Crickhowell pubs, I found this place on trip advisor. They managed to squeeze me and the dog in for an early doors table, which was great considering it was a bank holiday weekend. The dog was made such a fuss of and bribed with lots of treats. The seafood chowder was just perfect on a cold rainy day, and was washed down with a pint of local ale.I have one regret... I hoped to visit the deli the following day but after a fair few hours in the hills I just wanted to get on and start the long drive home. Saw a few good reviews that this business had shared on social media, so thought would try them out and give them support! Wish I hadn’t bothered now, they are part of the eat out help out scheme, but this business decides what you can eat on that and gives you a small menu already reduced in price and I must add also portion size, they also don’t include soft drinks in this offer, and if your gluten-free please be very careful, their idea of gluten-free is that you can’t eat bread, pasta, nan bread and papadum, this is stated on their menu saying all other dishes are gluten-free! But they have scampi, battered cod, onion rings, and chips on their menu non are gluten-free free! Also they have great difficulty in telling you what ingredients are in their foods for you to check! Any way we ordered the soup of the day carrot and coriander, garlic mushrooms and salt and pepper squid to start! Out came cauliflower soup with stale bread, garlic mushrooms on stale bread and one with out the bread for the gf member of our party, and 3 salt and pepper squid, very disappointed they forgot to put the garlic in the mushrooms, the salad on the side was all limp, and the soup wasn’t even carrot and coriander, it was all poor and not great in taste!Next we had the special £18 steak strips in a sauce with seasonal veg and chips, their burger @ £15 both not on the menu for the 50% off government scheme! Well the steak came out!! 6 slices of tough steak in a so called sauce and the seasonal veg was frozen peas!! that’s it £18 The burger was over cooked and dry very difficult to eat! Our gf could only have the gammon with no chips cause the Cook them in the same oil as scampi, and other gluten products, so the offered new potatoes, well they come out 3 potatoes cut in half very hard, dry and black, the gammon was very tough and salty. Out bill came to over £80 and I got to say it was one of the worst meals we have ever eaten for the money! So we certainly wouldn’t recommend there are much better pubs, just down the road from this place, so I suggest you just keep going and head to another.

This pub is very close to the canal. In fact their beer garden is adjacent to the canal. A great place to spend a sunny afternoon watching the world go by!

We arrived mid week whilst staying on the Mon & Brec Canal. The menu read well although there were some dishes (steak) that we’re not available.

What a joy! Good atmosphere and good food and drink. Perhaps one of the best steaks I have ever eaten. Service was good and friendly – remarkable as they had a very large party to cater and yet, the rest of us on our tables of twos and fours, still had perfect service.

Visited this friendly pub with nine mates on a walking weekend. As soon as we entered the landlord Sean was quick to serve us and find a table for ten which we hadn't booked.

We stopped in for dinner on our way as we cruised down the Mon-Brec canal on a narrowboat. Easily this was our best and most delicious meal in the week we were on the canal. Highly recommend. Try the lamb trio, the lamb was very well prepared, so tender and the lamb sausage was delicious.

Just got back from Sunday lunch here, what a wonderful welcome and the food was to die for. Even my sister, who can be a bit fussy thoroughly enjoyed her day. The only downside was they didn't have any windberry tart on the menu for my brother in law.! but he's been spoilt all his life and he's 83yo. He enjoyed his cup of tea though.

We were not acknowledged when we arrived even though the bar person looked at us when we walked through the door. We waited ages to be served whilst the two bar persons laughed about a customer who told them the best way to make a cappuccino. We asked for a baguette to be told that they didn't have any but we were offered a ciabatta instead. The advertising stated wide choice of fillings to which they only had cheese and onion / cheese and tomato. We were told that they had no other choices at all.

This is one of my favourite gastro-pubs but last night raised the question of how you keep standards up when the top team has a night off. The Sunday lunch service was, we were told, hectic and busy, so the first team had the evening off. This was apparent when we walked in and the manager who is excellent front-of-house was not there.

i visited here a few months back and it’s fair to say i was not disappointed. the food was absolutely delicious and they served a good amount too! being a vegetarian myself i did see that there weren’t too many veggie/vegan options available. however i cannot fault the food i was given, i also would like to comment on how friendly the staff were towards me. i found them very welcoming and able to have a laugh with their customers which is always good. x

Having visited here last month expecting some nice food and service,We were left very disappointed.Although the food was ok it was nothing special certainly not worth the money in my opinion. However the service was where this place was a huge letdown, would say we had a terrible welcome but there was no welcome at all, very frosty from the owner/manager,her attitude was terrible, which seems to flow down to the waitresses.Which is a real shame because this place could be a real gem with a change of management and a good old friendly welcome,it costs nothing to be nice

We were a party of nine and all food arrived boiling hot and absolutely delicious from the starter to the main to the deserts. Would recommend this establishment to everyone I know. We've eaten out at a lot of places for family meals and we couldn't find better if we tried. The owners and staff were exceptional with the service. We'll definitely be visiting again

After walking along the canal for an overnight stay at the Coach and Horses. The welcome was poor and indifferent. We were shown to our room. Outside our room at the top of stairs there was just a load of stuff piled up. Our room was old fashioned and dated and ridiculously said to have an en-suite which was just a shower in the corner of the room. It looked stupid and not professional. The communal bathrooms were poor and old fashioned. The curtain rail fell off when I tried to close the curtains!

Had dinner here last month for the first time in a couple of years, usually go to the vine tree along the road but thought we,d try here for a change, big mistake. We both had soup which was barely warm followed by steaks which were tough and tasteless. Not once were we asked how our meal was.The service was the poorest part by far.Waitresses looked like they’d rather be anywhere than here and the manager was very unwelcoming and she walked around with a face like thunder the whole time.Dont waste your money in this very unpleasant and glum environment.

We have been to this restaurant a few times and always liked it and felt comfortable there, so we decided to go for Sunday lunch as it was my husband's birthday. My husband had the beef and I had the slow roasted belly pork, both were delicious, however, when it came to the veg it came in a small dish which to my mind would of been enough for one, but that was for two of us. Carrots, which were lovely, broccoli, cauliflower and peas, my husband went to eat the peas and they were still frozen, I told the waitress thinking she would take them back and replace them but she gave her apologies, took them away and that was the last we seen or heard of them. For what we paid for the meal I think it was very shoddy. It was very busy in there but that should be no excuse. So as we were still hungry we decided to try desert which we don't normally have. My husband ordered sticky toffee pudding and I had lemon meringue. My husband ended up with chocolate pudding and I had a rubbery meringue. I don't think we will be going back for Sunday lunch again.

We rang 4 hours ahead for a table, got to the pub and they were certain we hadn’t booked a table. We went outside rang them to see if they could either Deny or confirm our booking to which the rude female manager said we did have a table. So we walked back in for her to say our table wasn’t ready in a rude manor. The outside seating areas are overcome with wasps! Our food firstly came out stone cold. We were then told our table wasn’t ready still. 45minutes after the time we previously scheduled. She then rudely told us that we have at most 15minutes to sit down and eat our meal!

It took exactly one hour to be served a meal which was ordered at table 40.I can only assume that it was due to my wife verifying that we had been overcharged for the meal before it arrived. It is common to give customers a receipt on products purchased she was not offered one.

My husband and I were staying in the area for my birthday last week and we decided to walk to this pub, as we were delighted to find it had a vegan menu! The pub is set in a beautiful location and we had really lucked out with the weather, as it was beautifully hot, so we got to sit outside and soak up the atmosphere. I'm really shocked by some of the reviews, as we experienced really lovely customer service when we ordered. The staff were really friendly and informative. Unfortunately they had taken one of the vegan items off the menu, which is specified on their website (the beetroot bun), however I was still delighted to find that the other vegan option was still available. It was served exactly as I like - piping hot (not stone cold as others have said their meals were served) and the ingredients tasted really fresh. Thank you so much for having something for us vegans! Would definitely visit this pub again if we are staying nearby and hopefully by then they will have even more vegan options added to their menu! See you again soon.
