Popped in on a Thursday lunchtime, just before Easter weekend after a walk in the Barnard Castle countryside. The lady who helped us with the orders was really lovely and cheerful and the food is excellent quality. Good portions and an absolute bargain. We had corned beef pie with gravy, potatoes, mixed veggies, a prawn sarnie and salad and crisps, a beer, some wine, water, apple and pear crumble, jam roll poly and cream and it was fantastic food at only £37.Definitely will be going back

We booked a table at Clarendon's for Sunday lunch when we visited Barnard Castle for the weekend. We were shown straight to our table & served with drinks whilst we perused the menu. There was a good choice & I opted for the meat trio roast (chicken, pork & beef), whilst hubby went for the roast beef. It was all delicious & the meat was very tender & melted in your mouth. The veggies were all fresh & plenty of them. The service was good & everyone was very friendly. A very nice Sunday lunch. We would recommend it.

Sometimes you don’t want chrome, you want comfort. Grandma, not glamour. My friend and I visited for a booked afternoon tea on a dull and rainy afternoon and this place raised our spirits back to happy! Beautifully presented (photos on other reviews are absolutely spot on), so tasty, and pots and pots of tea. We just loved it. Unashamedly old fashioned and all the better for it, this place clearly has a loyal clientele and more than deserves it. Over two hours passed in a flash and we loved every minute and mouthful. Thank you.

Right on the high street in the centre of Barnard Castle it's perfectly situated for any weary traveller, or two. My wife and I went for their Chicken, Bacon and Black Pudding Salad.... WOW, tasty doesn't do it justice. Earlier in the year we tried their Mackerel and Chorizo salad which is equally as good, but to be honest, the Chicken, Bacon and Black Pudding tops it every time. Their selection of teas and coffee would be hard to beat to, so next time you're in Barnard Castle... Pop in.

We ordered starters and main course, the starters arrived in good time but we had a bit of a delay before we got the mains. Our plates were cleared away and we were not offered dessert or anything else. Having subsequently attracted the waitress’s attention we subsequently ordered dessert. Unfortunately we then had to wait for at least 30 minutes before these arrived, even though they were cold desserts. In fact had it not been for the fact that we asked the waitress where the desserts were and that they arrived immediately we would just have paid the bill then and left before the desserts arrived. A very disappointing lunch today.

We arrived at 4.40pm, 20mins before the advertised closing. The cafe was silent apart from a couple of ladies having afternoon tea. No sign of any staff. Eventually we caught the attention of a waitress in the back room. She 'greeted us' by saying that they weren't serving food, only tea. As that was what we had intended we said that was OK. We proceeded to choose somewhere to sit, hoping for an open window as it was hot and stuffy. In the process we were accosted by a second member of staff who asked if we were looking for the gift shop, how strange! We had barely sat down when the waitress reappeared, not to take our order, but to present us with a pot of breafast tea. As the cafe has an extensive range of teas and coffees, this was certainly not going to be our choice. Once we had politely explained, the tea was whisked away without any apology. Once settled with our teas of choice we then had the uncomfortable experience of one of the members of staff hovering within earshot as she pretended to be busy. There was a tempting array of cakes but we dare not order any. I really don't know why we stayed, there are so many other cafes in Castle Barnard which would have most certainly made us more welcome.

Stopped for a light lunch in Barnard Castle and found this little cafe. It's obviously popular, and understandably. It's comfortable, with a very nice atmosphere, and a creative menu. We opted for two of their salads, and they were innovative and very good: goat's cheese & caramelised pear, and fig with Parma ham and supposedly Stilton. The Stilton seemed absent, but the rest was excellent. Good cake & ice cream to finish.

Nice service though the food was lacking in quality. Only went for a simple sandwich - chose the smoked salmon - which lacked flavour. The bread wasn’t great, and the side salad rather watery.

Both myself and my parents went down for a coffee, which they regularly do on a morning. The setting and environment are comfortable and well laid out. The coffee and food I have had at Clarendon's has always been enjoyable and very tasty! The staff are always friendly, chatty and willing to help in anyway possible.A fantastic place and I will regularly be going there myself!

Called into Clarendons yesterday morning for coffee and a scone, very dissapointed my husband had a latte which was very weak and my cappacino was cold the scone never arrived. We call in quite often but really was not good yesterday will certainly be a long time if we do return.

We had morning coffee and scones at 10.30, walked round the farmer's market and interesting shops, then went back for a light lunch. We chose the specials - home-made soup and baked potato with Brie and bacon. Both were delicious and ample-sized. Service was friendly, prompt and efficient. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. A lovely tea room to visit, we will certainly call again.

a nice place, dogs not allowed, lovely food and clean, we enjoyed it and will go again, there is seating upstairs too and gifts, locals seem to go there so that is a good indication that it's ok, no dogs is good for us folks who don't want to eat near dogs / allergic etc. i'm not sure about wheelchairs due to the step into it and the toilet at the back, near the kitchen, may be a little tight.

I'm sorry to say that this place is not what it was. Years ago, it used to be great, lovely quality stuff. We ate lunch here today. Breakfast hash; potato scone and bacon and egg; salt and pepper chips wrap; ham sandwich and chips. 4 drinks. We bought 4 cakes to take away. Total bill, £55. The cakes were nice, that's the positive. Other than that, I think the 2 breakfast dishes we had were very overpriced for the quantity we got. £9 for the breakfast hash, which I didn't care for at all. Probably contained 1 sausage, a couple of rashers of bacon. It was greasy and unpleasant. Very unimpressed overall and simply won't go back. Such a shame, because it used to be lovely.
