Chop Bistro in Braintree

Food good, despite the snotty egg white in the scotch egg and the onion in my burger (having advised I can't eat onion). Service from the young (new) waitress and waiter awesome!!. Service from the the person who appeared to be in charge was rude and unprofessional. Asked for Parmesan for a risotto, and then told abruptly there would be a charge for that! Felt under pressure to down prosecco so we were "allowed" to order a cocktail. When ordering an Espresso Martini and requesting no sugar syrup was meet with abrupt rudeness from the lady in charge. The young barmen was trying to accommodate, but she clearly didn't want to authorise him making me the drink. When the drink arrived it was clearly lacking any vodka of Kahlua. In the past have always thought this a place of fine food and cocktails, but maybe not on a Saturday afternoon, felt like they just wanted our money for minimum quality. Amazing youngsters this afternoon who went above and beyond, shame about the rude lady who appeared to be in charge.

My husband booked for my birthday & I was pleasantly surprised. Harry gave exceptional, personable service & the food was outstanding. The House by Hilly Gant was lovely, very cosy, lots of different eating spaces crammed into a small house. Food was immaculate, our friends had chateaubriand which looked very very good. Overall, the cooking and ingredients were faultless.

This restaurant has a great menu and the food itself is utterly delicious. There is a lovely cosy atmosphere and it would be a jewel in the heart of Braintree if it wasn't for one thing. Unfortunately there was one rude, abrupt and sour faced lady serving us which spoilt the tone during our visit.

My friend and I happily came across the House when we couldn't get a table at another restaurant in Braintree. We eat out in London quite a lot and the House was every bit as good, if not better, than some high end restaurants in London. The portion sizes were generous and the flavour combinations sublime. We both chose the duck with potato rosti, artichoke jam and crisps, chicory and brocoli with chilli and garlic. It was delicious and a delight on the eye. Superb flavours and perfectly cooked. My dessert was salted caramel and chocolate tart and my friend chose creme brulee. The whole experience was faultless, thank you guys.

Wow this is a little gem in Braintree Town. High quality food and service. In a friendly, cosy and relaxing atmosphere. I would definitely go back.

After reading many reviews and not far from us we went for a date night and were not disappointed. Attentive staff, fantastic food and ambience. We had parfait & scotch egg starters followed by the chateaubriand which was melt in the mouth. We will definitely return. Highly recommended

Oh wow what a wonderful Sunday lunch. We visited to celebrate a birthday and we weren’t disappointed. Starters of Prawn and Crayfish and the scotch egg, followed by Sunday roasts and then choux bun - all absolutely stunning! We had our Wedding celebration at The House by Hilly Gant. Suzanne and Sam (Chef) couldn’t have been more helpful in the planning stages and really helped pull together an amazing menu to satisfy many different requirements. On the day Suzanne, Harry and Sam (FoH) and the team in the Kitchen were amazing. The upstairs rooms looked fantastic, the food and atmosphere was perfect and they really worked to make our special day even better. Our guests had a great time, loved the ‘Classy’ venue and laughed and loved together Thank you so much to the whole team! This was the first time we visited and we were delighted with the service and quality of food. We were eating for a special occasion and the staff went out of their way to make it both unique and enjoyable. A short call from me before hand to explain the reason for our special occasion and we had chocolates spread over the table to start and at the end, a plate written in chocolate by hand with a delicious, warm chocolate brownie and ice cream. To my surprise, they didn't add any extra to the bill but I felt the need to pay for it. The bill came and they fully deserved the generous service charge that I voluntarily gave. Well worth the visit whether it be for a special occasion or if you just want a unique setting with exemplary quality food.

We love family run restaurants that source local produce and The House by Hilly Gant meets all these requirements. Yes, an odd name but check out the map and look at the lane next to the building. As soon as you enter the warmth of staff and management hits you. So friendly. Shown to a table on their patio because it was during a warm spell. Nice to eat al fresco, normally abroad but not the UK. Drinks order taken and they arrived promptly. Small menu, thank goodness. A hate is large menus that cannot provide the quality. Wine list is of a reasonable range at reasonable pricing. Our first course arrived. Wonderful chilli prawns in garlic butter on toasted sourdough bread. Delicious. The main course was difficult to choose. My partner decided on Essex grass-fed beef, medium rare. That looked to me, a brilliant choice. Cooked to perfection and, she said, tasted exquisite. Was I jealous? No way, as my East coast skate wing covered the plate. Pan-fried with a parsley and parmesan crumb. Skate wing is deceptive as the ‘meat’ covers both sides of the wing. Too much for me as I gave in after about 75%. After a short break we shared a platter of cheeses. I did like that the biscuits were my favourite of water biscuits. My choice as the minimal flavour doesn’t distract the subtleties of the cheese. All in all a wonderful evening. Professional, friendly service. Nice ambience. Thank you everyone. See you again soon.

We opted for the 2 hour bottomless lunch and not only was the food amazing, the drinks and staff were too. I can not fault this place, my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will 100% go back.

Flavour of the Sunday roast was outstanding, however it was barely warm. I did tell the waitress & she offered to take it back to the kitchen but I was worried it would be microwaved so declined. She explained they were understaffed and very busy. Beef was very rare & too chewy for me.

Take no notice of the photos, unfortunately the food is that calibre anymore. My husbands birthday so decided to do lunch, the venue & staff are brilliant But not happy with the food. We do realise menu’s change to that on the internet but I don’t want to go to celebrate a birthday, with ham, egg &chips Fish & chips or a burger. The good things on the menu removed. We ended requesting the evening menu, but practically the same. I will say my scallop starters were ok, bit over garlicky though and the chicken supreme good but served with a few small pieces of vegetables scattered round the plate. My husbands dinner was not good, worst scotch egg ever and the wing of skate served was awful, it was served with a Parmesan & pesto crust, so dry and the lovely capers & butter were poured over the potatoes in a dish, but not enough to revive the emerald green dry skate wing. Your hey day times have gone.

You won’t be disappointed. The food is delicious and the surroundings are cosy and welcoming. The staff are attentive (but not overly) and service is first class. Equally suited to family, couples or business meals. Highly recommended

Friends invited us for dinner here Saturday night. The restaurant was very busy but there were plenty of staff and the attention was perfect! The food is very good indeed, local ingredients and all freshly cooked. Steak and meat form our favourite local butcher, C Humphreys and Sons so you know it will be good and was cooked to perfection. Just the right amount of choice on the menu, great drinks menu, we shall be returning very soon and cannot believe we didn't find out about it before.

Very enjoyable meal shared with friends in an eclectic setting. Low ceilings do make it a bit noisy particularly in you are in the bar area. Tasty range of starters. Mains very well presented with the chicken and the belly pork super. The pork would benefit from the addition of more of the delicious sauces instead of the odd dab and dot here and there. The let down was the tarte tatin which was not a tarte tatin at all - it was merely a disc of pastry with a very miserly amount of sliced apple on top. The 15 minute wait was not worth it! The Eton Mess however went done well. A pleasant experience with generally well executed dishes.

I originally booked a table for 11 however had to change to 10 a few days before. The staff were incredibly understanding and helpful. Due to a large number of us we had to place a pre order. This was a very easy process and completed over email. A very warm welcome upon arrival. I've been here with my partner numerous times and I really wanted to show "The House" off to my family. Some or which live in Braintree and have never been. I've never had a bad meal or experience here (Christmas time is a must). Once we were sat down the friendly staff were soon on hand to check in with us and get our drinks. There's not much I can say to fully describe the food here other than a masterclass in fine dining. We must not forget the hard work and passion for cooking the chefs here clearly have, as every plate of food has stunning presentation and tasted sublime. The menu is very hard to choose from due to how delicious they all sound. I personally went for the Toasted sourdough with Tomato and Marmite butter to start. The flavour here is amazing. Next (to share) I went for the Chateaubriand with Chunky Chips, Peppercorn Sauce, mushrooms & Tomatoes. Obviously the superbly cooked meat steals the show here, it melts in the mouth. I can't understate how well done the sauce is to accompany it. Its a marriage made in heaven. The chunky chips are piping hot, crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. Overall this dish is a must if visiting. Finally I went for the Apple Tarte Tatin with Honeycomb Ice Cream. Again another fabulous combination of flavours and a great way to finish the meal. Thank you for a fabulous evening. We cannot wait to come back.

Visited here with my wife and family for her birthday. The food is absolutely incredible. I had the Scotch egg to start which was cooked perfectly with a nice runny yolk. For main course, my wife and I shared the chateaubriand which came with chips, rocket salad, served on a bed of mushrooms and the best peppercorn sauce I’ve ever had. Steak itself was served medium, tender and juicy. For dessert I had the creme brûlée and my wife, the brownie, again both were delicious. The atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy with all the staff friendly and helpful. They also do some lovely cocktails We will definitely be visiting again soon!
