7 years ago I reviewed the restaurant "Good curry, shame about the decor". Tonight we had a family takeout. My wife ordered the mixed vegetable curry, which turned out to be frozen diced veg with a house curry sauce mixed in. I have looked to find this type of frozen veg on the websites of all the local supermarkets but no, none had anything this bad. You know the sort of thing you used to be able to get - basically a mix of mostly peas and carrots with the diced veg all exactly the same size. Apparently no longer available in supermarkets so presumably bought by the restaurant in bulk from some supplier. Shame about the curry, shame about the decor.

This restaurant looks a bit grotty from the outside but don't be put off by that. The food is excellent, portions substantial and their butter chicken melts in the mouth. Complimentary poppadoms came with a delicately spiced onion accompaniment which I could've eaten all night and the mint yoghurt tasted of yoghurt. Staff are really friendly too. The restaurant itself was quiet for a Friday night but takeaways were flying out the door. Great place for a relaxing meal after a really long week.

I've tried many indian takeaways living away in north east england for 17 years and one other popular indian takeaway in Derry. I've found most to be very good or delicious.I tried Chillis last night and was sorely disappointed. The Onion Bhaji were patty/burger shapped and appeared to be bought in frozen or pre cooked and frozen. They didnt taste fresh, they had no crunch or caramelization on the outside and were bland and mushy on the inside. They were served with a dipping sauce that was just the standard cheap watery chilli suace available in any discount store. Rubbish. The Cicken Bhuna was rubbery with a watery bland sauce that had heat but very little flavour and tasted more like a cheap chinese curry sauce. Veg Pilaw again bland, watery taste with few vegetables. Sag Aloo didnt taste fresh either but was better than the Bhuna. The Nann Bread was good. I only ordered from here based on the decent reviews i viewed on tripadvisor. I can only imagine most of them are fake. I feel aggreived at paying £24 for 2 mains, rice a starter and a nann and it being such poor poor quality. I wouldnt eat here again.

Having relocated back to the area just a year ago from England I've been missing my favourite Indian restaurant. I'd tried a few different places in the City and Letterkenny but wasn't impressed. MORE AT TripAdvisor

Last night, I had the misfortune to stumble upon Chili’s, expecting an authentic Indian dining experience. What followed was not only some of the most drab, bland excuse for Indian food I’ve had in 25+ years but, hands down, the most appalling customer service ever courtesy of a lady who I can only presume was the person in charge. These are strong words but from 8 years working FOH and BOH in good restaurants myself, try as I might, I cannot recall a worse treatment. It’s not always a good sign when at 730pm, there are only a handful of other tables present. Despite the internal warning, I went ahead anyway. Bad mistake. No-one showed us to a table, we were told to just pick one ourselves. The place inside had a depressing feel to it. There was a lack of style, ambience – everything looked tired and dated. No-one’s tried to give the impression of a tandoori restaurant. The menus we were handed were on their last legs; tatty, knackered and dog-eared, fit only for the bin. I opted for a king prawn butterfly, my diner for garlic mushrooms as starters. When then came, I was convinced that I’d handed the wrong thing but no, they were correct. What I got were some king prawns, not butterflied, dipped in some strange cake-like batter and deep fried. In any other tandoori restaurant I’ve been to, and I’ve been to some of the best curry houses in the UK; Amaya in London, Mem Saab in Nottingham to mention a few, king prawn butterfly are whole king prawns in tandoori marinade, butterflied and cooked in a tandoor oven. These were battered, deep fried and not even butterflied. About as far away from the fresh, juicy, vibrant-tasting prawns they should have been.Next came my tandoori mix, rice and Peshwari naan. The tandoori marinade had no kick to it. Like the starter, it was bland. The meats were cooked to within an inch of their lives; dry, chewy, no moisture left. The lamb tikka was unrecognisable – it had more the consistency of pork. The sauce provided was another bland, insipid dish of food. I noted that it was made with that cheap frozen vegetable-mix you often see stacked up in hospital-canteen serving trays – that depressing looking mix of cubed carrot, peas and fragments of broccoli and cauliflower.I ate it because I was hungry and given how long it took to arrive, I didn’t fancy anything else. When I complained, I was met with the most arrogant, bolshie, defensive woman. I tried to explain to her how proper tandoori prawns are served. “Aye, well that’s how their done here” was the response. I explained that outside of this restaurant, I’d never seen prawns being prepared in such a way. She simply repeated her original response. Sensing that I was on to a losing battle here, I persisted anyway. I told her how lacking in spice the marinade was, how bland the accompanying sauce was. “Well, you never said anything and there’s nathin’ we can do now coz you’ve eaten it all”. I pointed out that finishing a dish is no indictor of its quality – more that I’m just hungry. “Well, you shoulda sez something tae somebody”. Here I explained that none of her staff did a check-back, a standard procedure in restaurants. “Well ye can see that we’re really busy”. At this point I became furious. So far I was dealing with someone who was flippant, rude and incompetent but now to start hoodwink me? I put it to her, that I as the customer, must surely be the problem for she had shirked responsibility for just about everything else. I pointed out that there was a total of 5 tables in the restaurant, all 2-seaters. “This is actually really busy for us” was the response. At this point my heart sunk. I knew right then I was dealing with people who wouldn’t know good service and proper tandoori food if you put them under their noses. I didn’t witness much hard work going on from my table and I’ve worked some breakneck services in restaurants. It looked pretty laid-back to me – 4 floor staff to six tables. There were no apologies, no discount, no offer of help, no attempt made to repair the situation – nothing. A masterclass in dreadful customer service. Basically, they’re far too focused on their takeaway service, which takes precedence over anyone in the restaurant.“Sorry yeez didn’t like it lads” came the terse response as we exited.I’m sorry too. Sorry that I ever inconvenienced you. Sorry that you reacted to constructive feedback with immediate defence. Sorry for the people of Derry who think this is representative of Indian food and service.Chili’s can be summarised like this: You can have a table if you must but our takeaway service is far more important than you, don’t complain because everything we make, we’ve been making it this way for years so don’t question it. If you don’t like something then it’s your problem and we won’t make any effort for recompense. Our manageress, who deals with complaints, has all the charm of a high-security prison guard. Enjoy your meal.

This evening, I made the unfortunate decision to try our local restaurant 'Chilli's'.As with every restaurant I frequent, I checked the website - where I downloaded the only available 'Take away Menu'. I calculated the cost, and I then rang to order. I placed my order and asked for the total cost, which was, to my surprise, 20 percent higher than the total I had accumulated.I questioned this and was told- I was 'looking at the old menu' - I refuted that this was the only available menu, at which time I was rudely told that the prices had changed ( a 20% hike), and they had not updated there website. I asked to speak to the manager, and I was informed it was with him I was already speaking. I was asked 'did I want to order or what?' at which point the so called manager of this establishment hung up the phone. As the other local take-away's were closed at this point, my partner rang and placed our order. We paid the inflated price and collected our food. My partner and I are both lover's of Indian Cuisine, and it was with sincere dismay that we attempted to eat our meal. Despite the hefty cost, the Tikka Masala and the Korma we ordered were tasteless and water-based. The nan bread was dough, severely undercook and stone cold. The rice was also completely water-logged.Without doubt I can attest this was my worst food experience to date, notwithstanding the false advertisement on prices and the unceremoniously rude reception the 'Manager' provides for paying customers. I should imagine that in these difficult economic times, where restaurants are struggling to survive, one which treats its customers with such contempt should not wish to remain in trading much longer.

Have eaten here loads of times over the years, last time was early December 2013. Was in on Thursday night, it was quiet, just ourselves and 2 other tables. 1 or 2 other Indian restaurants have opened in town so I imagine they have hit the trade of Chilli's but 1 of the other 2 also does Italian food while the other though Indian seems marketed towards the 'tobacco onion' crowd. Chilli's is the only true authentic Indian in Derry in my opinion. Restaurant is nice inside, tastefully decorated, good to see they have changed the chairs to something more stylish. Indian music playing over the sound system etc. Food excellent as usual, very fresh and tasty and good portions. You can ask for a 'doggie bag' if you don't finish it all. Their mixed platter for 2 to share as a starter is recommended. They have Cobra on draught which is a plus. On night we where in only 1 waiter on the floor and he did the till as well so I imagine it would be hairy if they got unexpectedly busy! On main road so parking can be tricky, park round the side in Frank Longs supermarket car park if you can or across the road in Sainsburys.

Sadly, after many years of looking foward to my visits to this restaurant when I am back in Derry, it's unlikely I will go again.I have actually been back a few times but wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt as I noticed standards were slipping but was hoping it was a blip. The service has become torturously slow, as others say, they seem to be concentrating on the takeaway side. If that's the case they should just do away with the seating. The food is hit and miss, Veg samosa are still the best I have eaten but one of our party sent back his dahl as it was just watery and over salted. He never got a replacement and they had it added on the bill.. Once our order was taken the only time we saw staff was to have food brought over, we were never asked if we needed anything or if the food was ok. When we had finished I had to make a point of loudly piling up our plates in the hope someone would come over, they didn't so we had to go and stand by the till to wait for our bill. We probably stood 3 or 4 minutes, waiting. If we were less honest people we could easily have just walked out. I was actually considering just leavng the money on the till.it's a shame this place has gone so bad, it has a lot of potential business that it is just throwing away

We have been here quite a few times for an Indian meal, but the last two occasions were disappointing. The service is very slow - about a 40 minute wait - and then the meal too was disappointing....bland and lacking flavour. Re the wait, we were told that it was due to 'takeways' being made first [!!!!] and that the meals were made 'from scratch'. The meals themselves were not - as a previous reviewer has said - even as good as a M&S Indian meal. The restaurant also lacks atmosphere - totally empty at 7.00pm on a Friday evening - and the decor is dull and uninspiring. Also cold, with reliance on small fan heaters at floor level. A pity - was once very good. We will not be back..........................!

Best taste and best value for money... Do not hold back on amount of meat in each dish. A lot cheaper also than some if its competitors. Def recommend as a take away. Great food and great value for money

This has to be the best Indian in Derry - the most authentic. The staff are always friendly and attentitive. Had the Daal curry (lentil), very nice. Very child friendly.

The food here is really very good and we got 20% off the total bill (Sunday eve) The service was good but !!!!!!! When I go to an Indian Resturant I do not expect to be served by non Asian people . This is a good place to eat but could do better . This said we will go back and try it again .

It's really so sad that this place, which actually, until recently*, did the best curries in Derry, is so lacking in atmosphere and so badly indeed of updating. I think they must survive on the take out trade and THERE is the answer to the empty tables. Chilli's really needs to rethink the market it is aiming at, especially since the opening of the excellent but expensive Mama Massalas*. The location should be an advantage not a problem - all Chilli's needs to do is downgrade so as to fill the gap in the market catering for students and others looking for a cheap cafe style curry. Get rid of the flock wallpaper image (actually there is no flock wallpaper but you could swear that there is) cut the prices and get a cooler image. Every time my wife and I visit we spend the evening redesigning the place in our heads. Time to leave the 70s and come into the second decade of the new millenium, Chilli's. If you don't know how to do that, find out. Oh and yes, you'll not find better nan anywhere and as an ex-resident of the curry Mecca of Bradford, W.Yorks, I know what I am talking about.

This place is the best Indian restaurant in the North West and further. My wife and I were travelling around Italy for 3 weeks and we missed here so much (went in to the the #1 Indian in Rome and it wouldn't hold a candle to Chilli's) ... In the 1st week we were back we visited Chilli's 3 times lol. The food is amazing, staff are brilliant, the Manager Heament (sorry, not sure if my spelling is right) is the best... decor is a bit dated but who cares if the food is this good! Tips: Try the chicken tikka and ask for it extra spicy. Portions are big.. When you sit in and order the Biriani, it's enough to take the leftovers home for lunch the next day :-) Try their Nans... So nice.

Everything is relative! I used to dine in Chilli's and thought it was quite good. It became something of a regular spot for a while until I ordered a 'King Prawn' dish! What I got was quite pathetic. The smallest of prawns/shrimps, halved to make them look bigger! Needless to say they weren't fresh! I didn't bother complaining. I just never went back. The M&S range of Indian food is way better than anything I got here. How does that work?!

Food always tastes good in Chilli's but the restaurant itself looks a bit dated and run down, the location isnt great either. It kind of puts me off from going to this place. So I prefer the take aways from this place, good food, good price but dont have to sit in a dark, dated room

Loved teh food here. I travel quite extensively and have eaten in Indian Restaurants throughout the world and locally. I have found that teh food in this restaurant is excellent, with quiet, unobtrusive yet helpful staff. Well worth going for a meal with friends or family, or if just visiting on business!

We went on Friday lunchtime where they do a buffet from 12.30-2.30 for £6 the selection of dishes was good, the quality was amazing, and easily the best Indian I have tasted in the world!! No exaggeration the flavors and fresh produce were out of this world, looking forward to going back ;)

Myself and my Fiancée love this place. We've been going to Chilli's for years.. it's my favourite restaurant.. both sit in and take away. Consistently good.I travel quite allot with work - and the 1st thing I do when I hit my Hotel is see where the nearest/best Indian restaurant is (no doubt someone will read this as they sit in their Hotel room, itching for a good meal...as I've done many a time lol).Out of all those Indian's I've been to - this place is the best... I always compare the others to this and they never really get there. My favourite is the Chicken Tikka Starter.. I ask them to make it spicy (Indian Spice as they call it) and its top notch. For mains you can't go wrong with the Madras, Vindaloo (my staple).. or the Phal. The Nanns & Rice in here are excellent.. especially the Peshwari Nann or the Plain Nanns (I've heard the Keema's good). This place is brilliant and I'd definitely recommend it... value for money and the staff are excellent (especially Ea-mon)Also.. at the time of writing this (Feb12) they have 20% off your total bill Sun - Thurs for sit in... so that even better value.Recently they did a buffet for a friends birthday party... soo nice.. went down a treat. If I wasn't getting married abroad I'd be asking these guys to do the same for my reception lolCons: As others have mentioned its not 100% pleasing on the eye... needs upgrading - but times are hard, so as long as they don't slip on their quality I'll keep going there :-)

For years I avoided Chilli's because it looks so bad from the outside , but after a recommendation from a friend eventually decided to give it a go. The outside badly needs a facelift , and they could probably use a new carpet, but the food is consistently excellent, generous portions, incredible naan bread and chutneys, and proper spicy curries, with ice cold cobra or kingfisher lager, Great value for money, Please give them a try, you won't regret it !
