Attractive exterior but shabby inside. Plenty of dining tables but short on staff. Pleasant food but nothing unusual or special. Plenty of parking.

Food nice prices reasonable. Went Wednesday lunchtime only saw 2 staff one when we arrived then another took over. Both very pleasant but a drink was forgotten and a meal arrived with no sauce. Had to wait for Bill then go search for a waiter to pay it. All this meant no time for dessert and we were late back to work.

We popped in here after a day at Whipsnade Zoo, friendly staff, nice choice of beers etc - we only had picky bits, cheesy garlic bread, fries etc - but good size portions and came out in a very reasonable time. Plenty parking here, well worth checking out 😃

We came on Sunday (4 of us) aged between 86 & 12. My nan has mobility issues but having the ramp to walk up from the car park is a great touch. Myself and my nan both had the roast pork which was lovely and plentiful. My husband who is vegetarian had the mushroom wellington, again he enjoyed it but said could have done with a little bit more filling. Our 12 yr old who has special needs had chicken goujons which he enjoyed. We also had puddings which was very nice. It was very pleasant not too noisy and crammed in. The staff and service was excellent. Would definitely return.

Chequers is very tired, some of the soft furnishings are worn. There were several items that were not available, simple things like cream and flatbread. Just not good enough.

Went in for lunch seats was very close together ordered drinks which came very quickly then ordered our food which took over an hour to come so don't recomend if your in a hurry as thay wasn't in a hurry at all the food was good just the service

I really liked the calm and cozy atmosphere of this place. A beautifully decorated Christmas pub. Polite and attentive staff, fast service. They asked several times if anything else was needed. I really enjoyed the Sunday roast. Delicious potatoes and meat, excellent gravy and bacon-wrapped sausages. It was very filling, tasty and a lot! We couldn't eat everything. Thanks to the chef and staff for such great service.

Really disappointed, come along to this pub often, and always been great. Booked a table for 4.30pn, arrived at 4.20pm, wasn't busy, was shown to a table out of the way, ordered drinks quite quickly, waitress we had was obviously finishing, as I said to her knew what we wants, she dismissed this and walked off!!! 20 mins later another waitress came over, felt sorry for her, as told us they had run out of roasts!!! No idea why original waitress didn't tell us, as we would have gone elsewhere! We waited 45 mins for our food, not a good visit

We had an enjoyable meal with good service and a warm welcome. We had lucy as our waitress, she was very attentive and friendly. The food was good and arrived quickly.

We had a Sunday roast. The veg looked like it was frozen and the potatoes looked like frozen Aunt Bessie's. It was acceptable, but wouldn't rush back. Service and atmosphere the same, which is a shame as this used to be a really nice place.

For me this was perfect. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was plentiful and promptly served. Can't fault it. And the chocolate brownie dessert was the best I've had in a long time! 5 stars Atmosphere was perfect for me as it was quiet and low key.

Wonderful place and very friendly staff. My constant nag and I had vegetarian food and it was served very quickly and was extremely good. Was a bit quiet for mid week, but it's homely and comfortable. Staff made sure we were left alone while eating and asked if we needed more drinks brought to the table, instead of going to the bar. Highly recommended

Very disappointed, food was not very hot when it came out, ordered the speciality burger that was supposed to have brisket on top. When it arrived there was no brisket, the waitress went to the chef then came back out and told us it had probably mixed in with the burger!!!!!!!!! Then went to get us some brisket and came out with the smallest plate ever for 2 of us, of which half was fat, by this time my burger was cold and I managed to eat 1/3 of it. I complained( something I never do) and to add insult they took the price of a glass of wine off the bill,

Really good pub food with great service. It should be standard fare across all Chef and Brewer pubs and the Chef here seems to be a good one! Would highly recommend this restaurant.

Mid week treat...and It was, too. Initial challenges in identifying menu allergens (staff are not allowed to advise or answer questions about ingredients), so we had to guess/play safe. Service was pretty efficient, food was delicious and vegan dessert was just heavenly. Very reasonably priced too.

Went for lunch with our two grandsons during half term,a lot of items were unavailable due to non delivery,and also shortage of staff,but we had a really lovely meal, both staff were very professional and polite, and managed brilliantly under the circumstances ,which shows that good reliable staff really make a good pub

Stopped in chequers whilst getting my car MOT today. And was pleasantly surprised. Was greeted by the manager Daisy who sat us even thou we wasn't booked. She took our drinks order and promptly delivered them. We was then served by the lovely Sandra. Service was amazing. We had steak and was cooked perfectly. Will definitely be back.

Soooo cold! Wrap up warm as there is Very little heating and we sat right beside an open fire. When discussed with the manager why can’t it be lit the answer was that the chimney needs sweeping. Quite a simple job by an expert. Food...

We had booked a Christmas menu for 12.30… and preordered.we arrived at 12.15. The room was so cold we had to keep our coats on. The starter arrived at 1.10… the mains at 1.50… it was dreadful… hot plate , cold gravy, burnt Yorkshire, stuffing...

Arrived at 6pm on a Friday night to find the pub almost empty; I thought this was unusual until I spent my evening here and the answer became painfully obvious. Came in for a work Christmas meal that was booked, with a deposit, three weeks ago. Paid for two courses, and only received one. I asked them to remove one course from the bill, which they rightly did, but I was still charged £16.99 for one meal of roast turkey, and to say the portion size doesn't match the price tag is an understatement. The price of lager at £5.95 a pint also left a sour taste in my mouth. To the credit of the ladies working that night, they were polite and helpful, but if I can summarise my evening in one word it would be 'underwhelming'.

Chef & Brewer so very reasonable. Historic pub too, Grade 1 or 2 listed.

After being a regular for several years, based on our last two visits we will not be returning. The food used to be great with excellent service and a friendly atmosphere. This afternoon after arriving at 5pm to a pretty much empty pub we received a welcome which didn’t make us feel welcome at all, not even a smile. Our drinks order was taken swiftly by a lovely lady and drinks arrived promptly. We then placed our food order with her but sadly she then vanished. After waiting nearly forty minutes for our food we then enquired twice but after an hour we gave up hope. We were told they were busy with a party of fourteen people which were clearly the priority! We had booked a good week in advance and we were a party of six, so hardly a surprise booking. When the children’s food did arrive my sons so called hand pressed burger was in fact a frozen supermarket burger. This isn’t about “my high standards” according to the Manager, just about a restaurant serving the quality of food they used to serve and serving what’s advertised. We had decided to go back after not such a great meal (Children's food was heated up oven food) as they had just launched a new children’s menu which sounded lovely, so to serve inferior food just isn’t on. The server then dropped the plate spilling half of his meal over the table. The rest of the meals were nowhere in sight and a staff member admitted they had forgotten our order. We left and will not be returning. We had been really looking forward to our family meal but we felt that we weren’t valued customers at all. After so many wonderful meals in the past it was like walking into a completely different place, very empty where it used to be really busy. After a quick look on Trip Advisor and on here, it’s clear we aren’t alone and it explains why it was so very quiet on a usually busy Sunday evening. It’s a shame as we have previously enjoyed some lovely family meals and have recommended friends. I doubt very much The Chequers will be open for much longer in the current state it’s in. The poor manager was lost for words and didn’t disagree with the fact they were serving frozen food and it wasn’t what they were advertising….avoid

Used to visit and was always impressed.. Visited September 26th 2021 for Sunday roast. Have to say it was probably the worst roast I've ever had. Disappointed food was bland and bog standard. Roast potatoes resembled new potatoes, pork and turkey didn't taste any different....
