Cheong Chinese in St Albans

Agree with other reviewers. Very dry. Tasted old and reheated. I recall when egg fried rice used to be white....

Overpriced, terrible food. Dry, reheated, lacking flavor. Egg fried rice picture attached. Empty spring rolls. Rude staff. STAY AWAY

We used to have Cheong's Chinese takeaway regularly before the pandemic. Thought we would try them tonight, had meal for 2 , well over cooked, couldn't eat the chicken, too hard, rice dirty brown colour. Never again.

Worst ever...I order Chinese every week from all over...I have had cheungs before and made the mistake of trying again....but it's the worst ever.chicken chowmein had about an inch of chicken and no taste atall...and the chicken sweet and sour Hong Kong was frazzled with no sauce...I thought I was eating a bag of pork scratchings! Unbelievably the worst in the UK... Please don't bother...I have avoided in the last 6 years but my son didn't know this...and went there....every other Chinese in st albans are great... They need to get a new chef and start to up their portions...

Cheong Chinese is a 15 min walk from home, it should be my go to place for Chinese takeaway, but. I walked in and there was no one at the desk, a small point, but I do expect to have staff welcome me to the premises. When I rang the bell, a young girl appeared and asked "what do you want", really not the best welcome. Having taken my order, she disappeared into the back to shop and did not reappear, until the next customer rang the bell. The food arrived, fairly quickly and was very securely wrapped in a tied plastic bag (which you have to pay for), and there appears to be no choice to provide your own. The food, was really nice, decent portion, nice flavour, as nicely presented as you can present a takeaway meal. If I was rating them on the food alone, I would give them good.. But rating them on the whole experience they get poor, which is a shame.

It’s only a mile from my parents house so decided to give this go instead of somewhere further away. I’ve had too much experience of cold food through Deliveroo, but circumstances dictated a fast food delivery. It was a pleasant surprise, nicely cooked cod and chips and delivered in about 25 mins. It felt a bit overpriced.

Waited about an hour and a half for delivery. Came in a cab, freezing cold. Rang them to complain, they said they’re busy. Asked if that’s acceptable, they hung up. Avoid, terrible customer service.

Had Duck & Pineapple. It tasted ok, but too much pineapple and the duck breast was carefully placed on top to look like a lot. It was carefully cut with no volume. As for the egg fried rice it was a filthy brown colour so gave it to the dog. The girl behind the counter just takes your money and doesn’t smile. It is was a very poor experience! Never Again!

Dreadful food. Rice very hard - obviously refried from a previous day, as were the King prawns and the sweet & sour pork Hong Kong style - all went in bin. The mixed vegetable chow mein was just noodles with the odd beansprout The beef in black bean sauce was passable. I had to pay more than the prices advertised on-line. £30 & we're still hungry. When will St Albans get a decent Chinese takeaway!

These are very expert Chinese takeaway cooks and we had about 20 quids worth for two people and were thoroughly satisfied and stuffed! Glad I didn't have lunch so I managed to eat it all! The Hong Kong style Kung po kjng prawn is the best I've ever had. They even roast the cashews so crispy. The roast pork also the best tasted. The plain chow mein bean sprouts and egg fried rice all fab. We will be back!

Very very over priced food, poor quality food, used to be good with previous owner. Sorry guys but you need to improve a lot.

In my opinion the best Chinese take away in the area. Excellent taking telephone orders and super efficient delivery of hot food. Only observation, portions way to big, better than being to small though.

Fancied a Chinese this one was recommended. cash only which I didn’t know, doesn’t matter you can get cash back at the post office. Girl in the shop was very sweet and polite and talkative! The chicken “balls” however are not balls just strips of chicken which are fried, regardless tasted good but balls of chicken would have been preferred. Hong king style chicken was lovely and my king prawn fried rice was scrumptious! The cook also came out to say hello and got me some extra Prawn crackers! Good Chinese though (:

The previous owners had not done a good job, and after a few bad experiences id stopped using the takeaway. But, I was told it had changed hands and was much better. I have to say that the staff taking my orders have always been polite and keen to help, but sometimes it is clear that English is not their natural language, and placing a simple order can become a little more complex than expected. However, the food is excellent, spiced to the level requested, nice sized portions, well cooked. Cheong offer very standard Chinese takeaway food, but good portions and sensible prices, customised to your needs / wishes - not sure what more they can do. Cheong Chinese has gone back to bring my go to takeaway.

this used to be my local go to Chinese.. it was all good, but since it seems to have been sold to someone, and now Mr chong is no longer there, the food has gone way down in quality. the pancake rolls were slimey and the chow mein was dodgy, gave me the runs for about 4 hours after eating... avoid at all costs. mr chong has left the building

I've only had the Chinese takeaway here once, but it was lovely. Everything in the right proportion, the egg fried rice was great, and overall it was really quite nice.

Can no longer recommend this take-away. The quality of the food that I always thought to be very good or better is now very poor. I don't know whether it is a change of ownership, cook or the ingredients they are using but the quality is shocking. Food is so soggy and tasteless. We are comparing like with like as none of our regular choices were any good at all. Will not be using again until there are signs of improvement. What a great shame.

New ownership, thought we’d give it ago as cheongs has always been our go to chinese. Awful customer service, food turned up cold and had been delivered food we hadn’t ordered. When calling up and questioning why the bill was so expensive and why we had received extra food, it turns out the person who wrote down the order had added a couple of things by ‘mistake’ and charged us for it! His response was ‘oh well yeah that was probably my fault what do you want me to do? Get my manager?’ So after going through the bill with him he finally hands the phone to the manager who states he would be sending round his driver straight away with a refund if we gave him the food we hadn’t ordered back. Almost 3 hours later, no refund? The food we had ordered was cold and tasteless, quality completely gone down hill. Very disappointed.

Good average Chinese takeaway which has improved significantly from being dire recently having been excellent for many years. Star rating is because they no longer take cheque or card payment, only cash. Very inconvenient.

Been using this as my local takeaway since Cheongs first opened years ago. However, due to a change of management a while back Chinese food is sloppy and tasteless and is missing "something" it used to have. Was much better when Mr Cheong Snr was there.In fairness, Fish & Chips always the same excellent standard.

Outstanding fish & chips and good Chinese too! Wouldn’t go anywhere else, really friendly staff - 100% recommend.

Tuesday evening in a rush after a busy day thought we’d try a take away. Bland tastless sloppy food got to be the worse Chinese we’ve ever had I urge everyone don’t bother going here awful food.

I mean if you eat at cheongs you know you cant beat it for your Saturday evening Chinese. you get exactly what you expect from this Chinese take away.

They got my order wrong, I complained and they agreed to give me another meal for free.

So called 45 minute wait turned into two and half hours wait for the wrong order. Customer service completely lacking. Very very disappointing. Do not recommend.

I had a Szechuan Chicken and it was hot but not truely flavoursome.The dry ribs were very good. But will use again.

Teníamos un chino desde aquí anoche. 7 de mayo de 2017. Era repugnante! , recalentadas congelados, aguado, sin sabor. Además tienen tanto enfermo esta mañana. También ir en buscar! Las luces están llenos de moscas. Higiene! ! ! ! ! !

Quality never fails to disappoint! Tasty food and free delivery. Plenty of choice on the take-away menu. Highly recmmended.

This is the best Chinese takeaway we have found outside St Albans town centre. Friendly staff and tasty food.

Went here for a change...Starters were nice, had sweet and sour chicken for mains with egg fried rice, small portion and flavour wasn't great! Was ok for a change, but I think we'll stick to our local!

I was recommend this takeaway by a friend so ordered last Friday. Food was absolutely tasty! Excellent! quick, hot and yummy! All the food that we have tried from here has been delicious. Definitely will be regular. Highly recommend to everyone.

Used to love the food here. Not now. V average sized potions but much worse than the taste and quality has gone. Very salty taste. Chicken was all brown meat and fatty. Shame.

We used to go to Flamelight but I think this one is better. The chicken cashew nut, duck are good. They also do home deliveries which is handy.Great customer service as once the forgot to deliver a dish and they came out to deliver it quickly!

This is first time using Cheong's Chinese. We really enjoyed the food. We ordered a set meal for 2 persons (1 starter 2 main course 1 rice and prawn cracker) only £16.50. My husband like extreme spicy food so the staff recommended their Chong Qing Spicy Mala Chicken and salt & pepper chips. The food was tasty and staff very nice. Highly recommend!

We have been ordered from this Chinese takeaway almost every week. They cook amazing food ( especially chicken curry and crispy duck with pancake) I would highly recommended to my friends and families.

Excellent fish cooked to order and good chips. Reasonable price. Never had a Chinese meal here. Closed on Monday.

We have used this Chinese takeaway for over 18 years, but the last 2 times we ordered it has been very disappointing. We used to order from them every two weeks but have stopped this due to the change in quality. I can only assume that it has changed hands and chef. Will need to find a new takeaway in the area...

Have used this takeaway for twenty years really dissapointed in recent meal. Didn't taste of anything, curry was worst ever will not be going there again.

Been going here for years & has always been to a high standard but over the last couple of months this has gone downhill. Curry with no spice, just bland. Won't be returning anytime soon. Which is a shame.Also, there service use to be accommodating but not as good now. Requests get declined.

Have been using this takeaway for several years as very local and convenient. Food has always been to a very high standard. Tonight, for the first time, not so good.Quality down as are portions. Not sure if this is a blip or a new trend but if the later, will be ordering elsewhere as not a shortage of good Chinese takeaways in St Albans.Will update if improves...

This my local Chinese take away.I find the staff cold and the food moderate.I visited this week and a customer requested curry sauce and chips but they declined to serve it all together which I thought was strange.I had Kung Po chicken and chicken fried rice.TheKung Po was too sweet and lacked spice and the rice was stale.In the past had Chicken and Black bean sauce which I found the sauce very glutinous.There are better Chinese takeaways than this one.

I've never had bad fish and chips from this place. They tell you to shout out if you want fish as they freshly cool it for you.

i have used this take away for 20 years it was always excellent but the last couple of times the food is not as it used to be

I have been using this takeaway restaurant for nearly 40 years and it remains the best I've tried. Good, friendly staff and fab food which is value for money. Extensive menu. Does cater for people with food allergies.

This is one of our locals. Having eaten F&C all over this meets the needs it would not go overboard. They do tend to cook the fish when you arrive do st least it's hot and fresh

One of the best chippies around. Fish cooked to order and always plenty of chips for your money. Happy friendly staff.

Popped in there for a change, not impressed, the food was warm at best although there were plenty of chips. Very little in the way of fish already fried or being fried, more pies and sausages than anything else. Not a bad price, but would think twice if I wanted fish.

Love this chippie, really fresh fish and chips. It can get busy but it is worth the wait and you do need to shout out your order to Michael when you are queuing so they can start frying your fish.

There's always a queue on Fridays. Ask for haddock and they'll cook it fresh (worth the wait). I always get curry sauce and it's really nice - as the family own the Chinese next door. We're always happy with the quality and service!

i used to use this chippie a few years ago when i lived in the area and it was a very good place always queues out the door i went there last week and was very dissappointed from the surly cook behind the counter to the under cooked chips and the HIDEOUS chemical tasting curry sauce was not a good experience am finding more and more places seem to have let there standards dropping these days what a shame!!
