Chaophraya Newcastle in Newcastle upon Tyne

We've chosen Chaophraya for our celebratory dinner after our wedding ceremony about two weeks ago and it was the best decision. Thanks to the kindness of the management we've had the privilege of dining in the private room, the Thai Garden and it was just beautiful. The food and the atmosphere were top notch and the team members looking after us were absolutely amazing, so lovely and professional. We'll be recommending Chaophraya to everyone and we will definitely be back for some more tasty food and lovely views ☺️ Thank you!

This food is too salt. Not worth money

Authentic, and delicious. You could tell the good quality ingredients, especially the meat (which there was plenty of). The food was cooked fresh to order, and the restaurant itself was lovely, including an outside/rooftop bit, which I will definitely look at next time. The food was expensive, but also definitely worth the price!!! All in all, a lovely meal, and I will definitely be back soon. Also, definitely get the chaophraya starter platter, it is delicious. 👍👍👍

This restaurant has a great feel and ambience but the mains let it down. We ordered the black pepper sauce chicken and another spicy chicken dish, the biggest let down was that the chicken was so dry that we both ate less than half of the dish. £90 total cost..1 drink each, the chaophraya starter platter, 2 mains and 1 side of 5 spice chips. Told our waitress when we'd finished that the chicken was so dry, hence the reason there was so much food left over, we blatantly saw her tell the manager and guess what.........! When the bill came there was no form of apology or good will gesture....too which I was very shocked considering how politely we mentioned about the food. Anyway we paid and left. We tried it and the experience confirmed we would never go there again or recommend this restaurant to anyone ever.

Booked for Mother’s Day with my Daughter. The restaurant is beautiful and despite a miserable day outside very light with great views. Traditional Thai decor and well maintained. Warm welcome and great service throughout. Cocktail options are plentiful and I received a complimentary cocktail as it was Mother’s Day. We both had the pad Thai, my Daughter had the chicken option and I had the belly pork, it was so delicious. We didn’t have starters as we had breakfast at our hotel in the morning and the pad Thai was very filling. Definitely will return

We arrived at 7.30 pm and were shown to our table given menus and were told they server would be with us shortly. So as we sat there other people arrived got seated and were served drinks. We waited patiently and still no one came to our table. I called the server over and were told again that someone would be with us shortly. 35 minutes of waiting we decided to leave. All in all, very poor customer service. As we walked out another couple were saying they had 2 main courses and a drink each and it cost them £104. I think we had a lucky escape

We are visiting Newcastle for my birthday. This restaurant was recommended to us, and it lived up to the recommendation. From the note on the table saying 'Happy Birthday' to the little desert with Happy Birthday on it, it was very good. The food is excellent and the staff are very welcoming and friendly.

First visit here and we were pleasantly surprised by the place, really friendly and accommodating staff wonderful food and great atmosphere. Prices of the food are reasonable however the drinks were overpriced in our opinion. Overall great place and well worth a visit.

If you want to treat yourself or someone this place has authentic Thai cuisine and decor to go with it. Though quite large it still feels cosy. Attentive staff. Food is excellent quality but you have to pay for it.

Was so lovely. They went above and beyond decorating the table for our anniversary and giving us a glass of prosecco each. It was a nice surprise. The food was delicious and the service top notch. There was a large vegetarian selection to choose from. The atmosphere is electric. Was a Tuesday evening but still busy. Must be a very popular place. Definitely recommend to eat here especially for celebrating occasions as we also saw other people celebrating special occasions such as birthdays with birthday balloons.

We found the food was good quality, the waiter was really attentive but the drinks are REALLY expensive. We will return but it will have to be a special occasion.

Nice enough restaurant with nice enough food and friendly service, but close to £100 for two people for a not spectacular meal on the chilly terrace was disappointing.

Brilliant valentines banquet sharing menu, me and my girlfriend particularly enjoyed the salt and pepper prawns. As well as the spring rolls to start. Fantastic to get to try different things and share, all large portions. Service was fairly efficient for a busy evening, only let down by the price at almost £150 and a fairly perplexing £15 service charge

This is the end for this chain and me. I found it wasn’t great in Glasgow and once again failed me. This used to be a great Thai chain and now has become poor quality.

Service was acceptable but the food was lukewarm and vastly overpriced for a shared starter platter and two mains at £104! Definitely wouldn't recommend!

My favourite Thai restaurant, the food is just amazing!! All the staff are so so polite and attentive, the views are wonderful, and most importantly the food is really well flavoured. Delicious!

I am giving 4 stars because the food was absolutely unreal however, the service was extremely slow, we had to ask 3 times for some table water, the table was not ready when we arrived and there was zero interaction from the staff until they wanted us to pay. When you pay £100 plus for a meal for two you expect a little interaction or even checking if we were okay, wanted any more drinks etc. The toilets were also not clean, pee all over the seat and no toilet roll in the ladies. I really do love this place but the staff need a nudge to be more attentive, i dont think ill return any time soon, there are so many other restaurants that will provide a better service. The food was outstanding though and i am happy to pay that bit extra for a good meal.

Probably the best Thai food in Newcastle

We went for dinner for restaurant week early evening. We didn’t feel like it was great value (£20 a head) for the food received, but having looked at the normal menu (highlights include £4.50 for plain rice), it was a lot less than usual. We did enjoy the food, though my partner found the pad Thai quite cold. The service was very quick- not sure if food had been pre prepared given smaller ‘restaurant week’ menu and was sat out. We were disappointed by the service especially after reading other reviews. We were served by many different people and had to ask twice for water, then when it came it was half a glass each and the jug taken away which I found very strange. We were sat beside the server’s area which was quite noisy, and overheard they ran out of plates which explained why we didn’t have any at first. We had high expectations for Chaophraya and as students it was meant to be a special treat, but sadly we weren’t so sure

Really good experience and absolutely delicious food. They pulled a switcheroo by giving us a bottle of water rather than tap water as requested, but other than that it was top notch

Went here for lunch with family having heard great things from friends, and we weren't disappointed. Brilliant restaurant, lovely atmosphere and the staff are so nice and helpful. We picked the set menu, and WOW. Brilliant food, so tasty and massive portions. Good value for money given the quality of food. Can't wait to go back!

Average food, very pricey. Mains don't include rice, ( 5 pounds extra). Starter 3 dumplings for 10 pounds. Not good value for money. The service was good.

Great location, elevated view watching over Greys Monument. Large restaurant inside, very well presented. The staff are without exception all polite & very attentive. It is a very extensive menu & we all fully enjoyed our meals.

We visited Chaophraya for an anniversary. The service was amazing and fast. The staff were friendly and advised on dietary requirements. We ordered the Chaophraya starter selection which was delicious. The chicken tacos and tempura prawns were especially good. The pad ka prao with pork had the perfect level of spice and a lovely rich savory taste. Unfortunately I did not enjoy the pad Thai, I felt it lacked flavor and fell too sweet for me. Despite that I highly recommend this restaurant.

Really great looking restaurant and lovely staff but really disappointing food. The ribs and dumplings were good starters, but the udon seafood and chicken/dragonfruit stiry fry dishes looked more like cheap buffet food than authentic Thai dining; full of big chunks of raw onion and a weird gloopy sauce on both. For the price you pay, you're getting a nice venue, not good food. Decent cocktail menu though.

The food was good but with a price comparison against other Thai restaurants I have dined at, the quality was not as worthy of the price. Their price is relatively standard, so I am not saying it is expensive 😊 The service was excellent. The staff were very accommodating, attentive and polite, they also made sure we were aware of the discounts, cheaper options and the menu options. The atmosphere is probably the best selling point. Stunning, quiet and low lit Thai restaurant. The restaurant is on the top floor of Eldon square which is accessible by lift, so you have some beautiful window views of the city which is perfect on the evening. There are plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. I would recommend going Chaophraya and I will likely come here again.

Came for a birthday meal we went for the set menu which gave us a range of things to eat all delicious, good wine and great views.

This place blew my taste buds off. Incredible traditional flavours and so much effort in the presentation. I got the Thai basil rove and it was superior to many I've had. Finn and Scott were absolute delights to deal with Scott leading the way to an exclusive feeling experience and Finn hitting me with some tasty sips to keep me going until the food was ready 🤘

Wish I had listened to the reviews. Ribs were chewy couldn’t even get any meat off the bone, pad Thai was freezing cold and chicken satay was bone dry. Lovely location and good vibes but the food was awful. The chocolates that came with the bill were the best part

We spent a wonderful evening in the company of friends. We celebrated our friend’s graduation in the restaurant. The atmosphere was fantastic and the workers were wonderful. We ordered coffee and some dessert, as well as the evening dishes, all of which were delicious.

Chaophraya is a busy Thai-Fusion restaurant sitting atop Eldon Square, enjoying a premier overlook of Gray’s Monument right slap-bang in the middle of Newcastle city centre. The staff members individually were excellent, timely, and informative. Unfortunately the premier experience does rather end here, giving way to an relatively expensive dining experience with okay food in it’s place. The overly-dark interior gives the impression of a club rather than a restaurant and our parties table was also situated on one half of the run between the kitchen and the dining room proper, rendering us a blockage to busy staff and the obliging us to mash ourselves up against the windows. The menu featured alcoholic spirits with prices that didn’t include mixers, those being prices separately for an extensive premium (think £3 for 100ml of lemonade), which is fine but when you’re paying £8 for a gin I would appreciate this being more clear. Finally the food, the starter that I shared was really well presented and tasty but the main was unfortunately overcooked, the rice being less sticky and more pudding. My groups food experience varied but the general consensus was it was, unfortunately, overpriced for the experience.

Family 60th birthday held at restaurant. First time I have been hear and found it hard to see food due to dim lighting throughout restaurant. Food was very nice, Ribs to start - unusual flavour and texture tender but more fatty than I was expecting. Curry and coconut rice as main this was very nice would have again. Prawn Crackers ordered for table, nice flavour with a little spice. Only negative on service would be for a party of 21 people they only had one person serving, by the time the server had placed the mains you were waiting 5 - 10 minutes for the rice and sides to be put out.

Have visited this gem a few times, most recently with my partner. Food is absolutely outstanding. We both had soft shell tacos topped with chicken to start, and then beef in black bean sauce and crispy sweet and sour chicken, respectively, for the main. Five spice fries are to die for, as are the prawn crackers with sweet chilli dip! Brilliant selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails – which is great for teetotallers like my partner – and the service was really attentive too. Shame we couldn’t get a window seat despite booking and requesting one in advance and were given food in a very chipped bowl (pictured) but I would still recommend.

We stumbled across Chaophraya, whilst walking through Eldon Square. We fancied a drink but didn't want to sit indoors due to it being a rare sunny day, so the sign outside of the restaurant stating that the roof terrace was open looked inviting. There are a lot of steps before you eventually get to the restaurant (I didn't see a lift) but the greeting couldn't have been nicer. We were shown to a lovely table with views over Grey's Monument. We only had one drink each as we had a lunch booking elsewhere and were probably only on the terrace for just under an hour, however the service from all of the staff was excellent. When we left the staff in the restaurant all said goodbye and thank you. We will be returning soon to try out the menu! I was very impressed with the location and the incredibly friendly service!

Went with two other families as part of a graduation celebration meal. I found it to be a pretty average meal. The setting is nice enough with good views and the service is good, but I didn't think the food was anything special, it wasn't very hot and it was really expensive... £24 for a two person sharing starter platter was way too much for what you get. Personally I wouldn't return here as I'm sure Newcastle must offer better Thai cuisine elsewhere.
