Chango in Richmond upon Thames

Love this little shop, always stop by when in Richmond. Beautiful little snacks and loads of choice of fillings.

Great to have this little option in the heart of Richmond, next to the Green. The empanadas are authentic and flavoursome. Nice option for a light lunch to sit on the Green. Beef, Chicken and Cheese & Ham tend to what most people like, but please try some of the other fillings. Also, they serve fresh Chimichurri (a green herb sauce that typically is used with steak in Argentina and Uruguay) to dip the empanadas into, so ask for some of this.

After often passing by Chango a few time, thinking 'I must try those one day!', I finally stopped. I've had empanadas abroad and wasn't convinced they could do them 'right'. OMG, the first bite was heaven. The pastry was light, fluffy and warm. I ordered 2 empanadas: spicy chicken and olive mozzarella. They heated them for me, and I ate at the little table and chairs they have outside. The empanadas kept me going all day. Chango will now be my lunch stop to take food down to the River or for sitting on Richmond Green. They have several filling options, so I have so much more to try! Highly recommended.

We live near Windsor and love Argentinian empanadas so during lock down we decided to order on line from Chango and get some delivered in time for Christmas and New Year. As we hadn't had them before, we ordered a selection of them, predominantly meat with the one veggie option thrown in. We were really looking forward to trying the spicy chicken so we ordered 2 boxes of those. However, when they arrived, they had replaced the chicken with tomato, mozzarella and basil (not the veggie option we had chosen) so we ended up with a dozen empanadas we did not want (they were more like small Italian calzone than Argentinian empandas!). What makes matters worse is despite sending 2 emails complaining I have had no response. We spent over £50 with the delivery costs and ended up with 2 boxes of empanadas we did not want. Would not use them again primarily because of their poor customer service.

I bought empanadas for my Argentinian brother-in-law and all agreed these were the best we had tried outside south America. Taste and texture were totally authentic. We tried the caprese empanadas (mozzarella, basil, tomato) .. I wanted to try pumpkin and goats cheese or ricotta and spinach but these had all sold out. I will go back to try more. The alfajores were light, sweet and delicious.

I've passed by the shop often but was slightly intimidated by the hipster-y appearance, I only just recently let my curiosity get the better of me and popped in and bought 3 different empanadas to try on my way home. I assumed the Ham and Cheese would be the most boring tasting of the lot, but it was so very good it might be my favourite! The Beef and Chicken were very yummy too - and the people in the shop were very pleasant and polite and efficient, lovely experience all around. Now I just have to control my temptation to go crazy and head home with a great big bag of them one of these evenings. (Also it's quite a nice change to have something like this that it isn't dripping with butter or oil and yet somehow not at all dry.) Having just looked up their website before posting this, it's worth noting that I completely missed the fact that they also sell alfajores (which if you haven't ever tried are the most amazing biscuits sandwiched with dulce de leche though that description really doesn't do them justice). I don't know if they're selling them now but something to keep an eye out for.

Great stop for a quick snack. Good quality, nice service. They have seating also which not many people know about.

This is a superb place for a quick bite if you are walking around Richmond. The empanadas are really good and you can even get an alfajor for dessert (or dulce de leche). Mainly is to take away but you can sit outside (if the weather is nice).

Really nice, high quality empanadas. We had beef and chicken ones, hot. It's a tiny bit too expensive for what you get but that's how Richmond is. Would recommend to anyone looking for a snack

This Argentine "street food" style outlet in London can also be newly found at Westfield mall @ Stratford station as well as at Farmer's Markets if you check their website. Chango empanados make for a filling & tasty snack or you can take as many flavors and any number that you like home to heat up as an entree or appetizer -- which is exactly what we did - along with a nice light red table vino. We were pleased to have found this exotic South American wrapped favorite while in London.

Friendly service, I purchased the 3 for £6 option - chicken, ham & cheese, with beef empanadas my favourite. Pretty tasty!

I would move to Richmond just so I could eat more of these amazing empanadas. If you don't know what they are they are like small parties filled with lots of different things. We bought a selection, some chicken, beef, cheese and tomato and a vegetarian. Delicious!!!!!

My family just visited Chango, which is just a few steps from Richmond Green. We had one of each of the empanadas: beef, chicken, mozzarella & tomato, and ham and cheese. They were all excellent with a flakey and perfectly crunchy crust. We also had the cookies with dulce de leche, and they too were excellent.

Never had one before but they're banging! Excellent filling and small portions means you can enjoy a few different flavours in one visit.

Lovely empanadas- choice of 4 fillings; beef, chicken, ham and cheese and mozzarella, tomato and basil. Warm on a cold day. Fresh and yummy! Took some home with us too.

Couldn't decide which empanada to have, ended up getting two different ones but my eyes were bigger than my belly. The empanadas are yummy and filling despite their small appearance. Not cheap but tasty.

Located down a little cobbled street with several upmarket (boutique and vanity) shops surrounding it, the shop itself is very ‘faux rustic’, with its faded yellow exterior and wooden fringed window display. Inside, the shop is no bigger than telephone box, but has seating upstairs. They sell coffees and most importantly, freshly made, hot empanadas. Which, for the uninitiated, are similar to cornish pasties but from south america and usually with a spiced meat filling. For my visit I had two chicken and one beef, as the offer is 3 for £6 on hot empanadas. I took them outside, as it was glorious weather and there isn’t really much seating inside, it’s definitely more of a take-away place than an eat-in place. So I wandered down onto the green and plonked myself in the sun. The first thing you notice is the pastry, it has a smooth, almost doughy texture. Where usually you’ll find baked goods are flaky and a bit dry to be honest (for my taste), but these empanadas are more on the dense, chewy side. Which I think is perfect to go with the typically stronger spices of the fillings, compared to other pastries. As I mentioned, I got chicken and beef. They also offer ham & cheese and tomato & mozzarella, which I have tried previously and I wasn’t hugely impressed with, but with these…I loved them, well-spiced and flavoured meat, with a good filling-to-pastry ratio, whilst still being pretty hot too. The empanada held together pretty well during my onslaught (I was hungry), which is testament to the quality of their construction and consistency as they all held up and were basically identical.On reflection I preferred the chicken as it was much easier to eat, the beef was slightly tougher. Lovely little place and staff is very kind and helpful. There is some table to sit on the 1st floor to rest like us after long afternoon of shopping but you can also take away. The "empanadas" are delicious. They compare them to Cornish pasties but these I believe are much nicer and healthier. My favourite was chicken and ham & cheese :) Certainly will be back...

Tasty empanadas and alfajores from this tiny shop. Take away and sit down. Bit pricey, but a good snack none-the-less.

I happened across this café/take away purely by chance, but having had Empenadas in Spain, I couldn't resist! They are absolutely STONKING!! I prefer the beef ones, but I took home a tomato mozarilla and basil one for heating and eating, and it was just as nice. You can eat in upstairs, but I've always taken away, warmed and ready to please!!
