Central Fish Restaurant in Ceredigion

Great fish and chips. Not the most glamorous decor but the food was great. We did sit inside the restaurant and very glad we did.

Visited again and little to complain about. My cod could have been slightly hotter but we had to wait for a fresh plaice for my wife which was very hot .Although offered a drink which was taken up they did not ask us about any other sort of extras which we only realised after that they were available because the new partitions obscured the list at the front and they were not listed on the menu cards. Surprisingly the seat dividers helped to make the restaurant area slightly more up to date ( whilst they are new and clean) an on going criticism of the restaurant. Well worth the slight walk from the crowded front.

Nice fish and chips, good sized portions, plenty of choice. Standard chippy cafe, well set up for Covid. Can’t complain.

We walked the city of Aberystwyth and luckily found this gem - the fish was amazing!!! Thank you 🙏.

We have visited this fish bar in the distant past and we found it pretty good, however, we came here about a month ago and we felt that the chips were perhaps reheated.We thought that this could just be a one off. On Tuesday we were dropped off there by the local garage as my car was in for service. On entering the shop was completely empty. We waited only a short time. I had Minced Beef and Onion Pie with chips and gravy. I don't know why but I am in the habit of picking a chip off the plate with my fingers and biting the end off before I start my meal properly. As I bit into the chip it felt very crispy which was okay as many chips have a crisp coating. However, as I bit further into the chip I realised that the whole chip was hard all the way through. The entire plate of chips were the same as were my wives. The Pie was alright and so was my wifes Fish but, we both agreed that these were the worst chips we had ever eaton. My wife didn't eat many they were just too hard. I am a bit of a die hard when it comes to chips so I ate most of them making sure that they were well soaked in gravy first but still they were very hard. We didn't make any comment to the owners as they are very nice people and we didn't want to upset them on the day. However, we have to say that we will unfortunately never eat in there again!

Proper chips good fish clean visited before with family variety of food all good staff attentive and owners keep them on their toes in a friendly way seem to know a lot of them as regulars

My wife and I were in town and were really in the mood for a fish and chips. My wife had salmon steak which was a very nice size. I had standard fish and chips, which had fish actually in it. I'll be back

Had lunch here yesterday with my dad.. rissole and chips and cod and chips both with a cup of proper tea, my dad said the fish and chips ere as good as it gets, loved them and piping hot at the table, the 2 mbrs of staff there were great friendly and helpful, when we are here again we will be going back,,,,, only gripe was most of tables have fixed seating which i hate, but had normal tables against the wall so all good

Heard nothing but good things about this place and had been wanting to go here for a while. Decided to eat in which was okay, friendly staff.. however the prices are extortionate!! Not sure on prices to take out but for 2 fish and chip meals (standard size on a medium plate) with 2 cans was 17.60!! chip portion would equate to a cone.

Great chippy with lovely fish and chips. Mushy peas, bread and butter and gravy are also available. The meals were fab and it was great to sit inside to eat. Very old fashioned set up which for me is great. The only downside is there's no toilet available for customers

Popped in with my family for tea where we dined in and had a lovely meal. The only bad part of this experience was when there weren’t any toilets so I went to the nearby ones. However, these cost 20p each with alarmed barriers and had a 10p coin stuck inside so I couldn’t use them. The chippy itself was great minus the lack of toilets and it’s a great place to eat.

been going here all the time for years now and we love it. i sometimes come by myself to quickly grab a takeaway but have eaten in with my boyfriend many times before. clean, relaxed, great food, good prices. beats any other chippie in town

Chips were stale burger was awful full of water fell apart very disappointed with the food and service not recommend

I have visited this place every year for the last 25yrs, This time the chips were precooked and stale, worst of all the proprietor was on the premises, Please do the world a favour, If you have lost interest in your business hand it over to someone that has enthusiasm, At the moment in my opinion there is NO where in Aberystwyth that sells top notch chips, Seaside town LOL or Cry...........................

This chippy has been here as long as I remember and is still in the same family ownership.The chips are not bad here as is the fish and I do like the curry sauce which has lumps of chicken in. The portions are of a decent size.The place has gone quite pricy for a take away but does have quite a lot of staff to keep.

went to Abreyswyth just for the say and when your at the seaside what do you eat yes Fish & chips this place is small and you have to wait but it's well worth the wait verey nice fish & chips great service nice staff

Took a while to come but it was a nice plate of fish and chips. The staff were a bit miserable. A smile doesn't cost anything. Also, no toilets available when we went so we had to go to Tesco!

Obviously I mean the food is simple and tasty, and the staff are friendly. That would be weird to call staff tasty wouldn't it?

The food was hot and plentiful for the price compared with some other establishments, but not the most enticing building. P.S.There is no need for other people to be uncouth on here.

I'm sick of getting calls for you on my landline from people wanting fish and chips. Update your bloody number will you? I'm tired of people calling me a liar when i say I'm not Central Fish Cafe, i'm just in my house trying to mind my own business. I've told you about it before but it's almost as if you totally don't care

Popped in for lunch on the way through Aberystwyth. Sat down to eat. 2x fish & chips and 2 cups of tea - food arrived pretty quickly and was tasty but very standard fish & chips.

Can’t believe people use this place the food is from another session cold and several times cooked chips staff looked and acted totally disinterested I cannot believe all this rubbish about 5 star rewards who gives these things out what a let down RUBBISH on ordering the menu gave you several types of fish of which they had cod nothing else.

The restaurant is slightly outdated by the deco but that’s just trying to find a fault as the service and food was excellent. Perhaps a couple of choices of still soft drinks as not everyone likes fizzy pop.

Always good fish and chips in good sized portions and with always happy servers who are always chatty and friendly

Today we were in Aberystwyth and were starving. We found the Central Fish Restaurant and saw that it wasn't too busy so we went in and ordered 4 fish and chips, a kids sausage and chips, curry sauce and beans. We also ordered drinks. The food was freshly cooked and delivered to us in good time. Could not fault the food. The cod was tasty and crumbly and the battery crispy and not overly greasy. The chips were cooked perfectly and the curry sauce was like eating a chicken curry. It had pieces of chicken in it and tasted amazing.the staff were very helpful and couldn't do enough for us. At the end of our meal we left five empty plates and had very full bellies. I would recommend this place to everyone.

Have been coming here for years, the family is great and there is a nice local atmosphere. The fish and chips are also delicious and make for a good hearty meal.

Popped in here on first trip back to Aberystwyth for over a decade. Remember this place as having decent tasty chips. We bought sausage and chips for a family of 5. Appalling doesn't adequately describe the quality of the chips. They looked brown and green and were as unappetising as they looked. The ones that weren't rock hard were greasy and tasteless. The only saving grace were the sausages which went down well with the kids. We threw virtually all of the chips away. Won't visit here again even if it is another 10 years!

Este lugar es asqueroso. Fui allí en una noche ordinaria martes y pedimos patatas fritas grande con vinagre y sal. Me dieron mis fichas y me tomó un tenedor plástico. Por desgracia, no había tenedores de plástico izquierda! sangrienta ¿Cómo estúpido! Luego me llevó a mi casa "fish and chips" y las patatas fritas eran sangrientos brown! Y sabían como zanahorias quemada! Recomiendo a nadie que vaya allí de nuevo! Su horrible!

Terrible. Una vez fue una buena, popular. ciudad de chippie. Entonces los propietarios dieron vagos y descuidadas, y no me importa menos largo como el dinero. Fue cuesta abajo rápidamente y se hundía a la menor calificación posible, higiene aunque se han recuperado algunas marcas en ese resultado. Mi experiencia de hoy - cod haciendo su segundo o tercer tramo en la freidora significa que no vamos a volver.

La comida muy buena, el servicio rápido y buenas porciones. 15 libras por dos pescado y patatas fritas con bebidas no es terrible relación calidad-precio. La única crítica sería la platos pequeños, ya que hizo para gobernar el pescado dura!

Feeling tired we decided on a take away meal and got fish and chips from the Central Fish Restaurant. The smell was too tempting so we drove to the harbour to enjoy our feast. Delicious! The best we've tasted in a long time.

We popped in here on the way back to our holiday home and grabbed a large bag of chips.... the large is i think £2.10 but its just a tray not a large tray at that. The chips had just been cooked so were fine just shame about the size!

The only reason I can think of for the chips being so awful is that they recycle them! God knows how long the ones presented to us had been sitting waiting to be dished out, without doubt the worst chips I've ever tried to eat and the fish was extremely average (certainly not fresh).

We come here on a regular basis if we happen to be in aber.I have to say I'm shocked at how the owners speak/treat the staff working here. He's very rude to his workers (treats them like dirt to be honest) no respect what's so ever!The owners mother is exactly the same, very abrupt and snappy. A bit of politeness and manners would go a long way!The members of staff are always very polite and manner-able shame on the owners.I won't be visiting here again

Reasonably clean and old fashioned chippy. The food wasn't very nice though. Worst soggy brown chips I've had in a long time. The fish batter wasn't much better but the cod inside was tasty.

When I first tried this place six months ago I had one of the best fish I have ever eaten, it was soft and the batter was crisp. However today the fish was very rubbery, dry, smelt awful and was hard to cut into. It wasn't edible. It must have been sitting on the side for way too long, I've never eaten a fish that was this bad. I have noticed that slowly over time the quality of the fish has been decreasing, I'm not sure why. The chips are great but the quality of the fish recently really lets the place down.I'm always happy to wait 5 minutes or so for the fish to cook since that's when it tastes best. I'm no fish expert but there's lots of ways to fix this, cook less fish in advance, cook more fish to order, if it's been sitting on the side for ages advise the customer and offer a discount or throw it away. Maybe the fish wasn't fresh enough to start with.I really hope the place improves the quality of the fish and the owner sees this review. I won't be visiting again for a while.

Very central location within easy walking distance from seafront, shops and train station. We ordered and paid at the till (cash only) and food was served up quickly. Chips were great and the curry sauce was delicious. This restaurant does not claim to be fancy but the food is tasty and fresh.

I was really looking forward to trying the chippy after a recommendation from somebody. Unfortunately it wasn't as expected. The fish was lovely but the curry sauce had chunks of chicken in it which really spoit it for me. They also didn't serve roe which is unusual for a seaside place. Overall ok but would not return there again.

Called in saturday 13 Aug, and ordered sausage and chips, good service/food from a young lady who had just started thanks ...good luck with your job

Went whilst visiting Aberystwyth on a Thursday afternoon. Really tasty fish and chips, big portions too and there was a large size available! Hasn't got full marks due to charging for ketchup & it was more expensive to eat in than take out for some reason.

Popped in for the usual pie and chips at lunchtime on Wednesday 22nd June having discovered that my favourite Aberystwyth lunchtime takeaway "Fusion King" was closed. The Central's owner Benjamin Manlucatao was inducting a new member of staff sadly on an occasion that the standard of food was way below the usual - the chips were cool and soggy having sat? in the warmer for ages, as was the pie luke warm and by the thickness of the chip was fifty percent what I am used to - what was going on? Had I not been catching public transport I would have gone back and asked for fresh food and failing that my £3.50 back - buyer beware at lunchtimes - approx. 11:45am. Will however be back for another chance as hopefully a one off?

Without a doubt the best chippie in the town. It may look unpromising outside, it may be inconveniently placed on a roundabout, it may be plain inside.Yet the cooking is excellent, there are plenty of staff who will serve you at table, and the endless queues of callers at the door are testimony to the well-deserved popularity of this place.If the combo you want is not obvious, just ask, and they bend over backwards to make the customer happy. Great place.

Time and time again I visit the Central for a range of dishes from sit in to takeaway, which I do the most of.Spoilt for choice I regularly enjoy the chicken curry sauce and chips, or the chicken and mushroom pie and chips or when dining in the uniquely served and sized portion of cod and chips with tea.Lately the plain and humble tray of chips has been hitting the marque time and time again - a good portion, freshly cooked with a great texture and crunch served by a consistently friendly and courteous team.If you are lucky enough to be served the owner's son you may even get a large blue plastic fork free of charge for your (chicken) curry sauce.Prices are good value and the bottled water available comes from a source in Wales - da iawn - thank you Team Central Fish Restaurant.

Many of the other reviewers have mentioned the key points which are grumpy manageress, badly trained and high turnover of staff and bad quality food. I dined in there only once and was appalled by the size of the plates/portions, at first i wondered if my meal had been served on a saucer but this was not the case. I got wise after the first visit and bought only chips to take away then walked round to the nearby Spar and got two hot pastries from the hot cabinet.

Consistently good, freshly prepared fish and chips. I mostly takeaway but it is possible to eat in too with the traditional cup of tea and bread and butter.

We called for lunch and had Fish Chips and Mushy Peas. Although the cafe was very busy we did not have long to wait. When our meal came it was very well presented and all cooked fresh. The staff were very friendly and the cafe was very clean and when a table became empty the plates were taken away and the tables wiped clean.

Food was cold, refused to serve what was on the menu. I asked for a battered sausage but they refused because they "couldn't be bothered" to make one. The curry sauce had very visible chunks of chicken and the sauce its self was very thin and bland. The sausage she served me was tiny although I'd asked for a large sausage. Will definitely go for other fish and chip shops in Aber in the future, chip box 4 and express are miles better in comparison.

Visited here a few times, food on a whole is pretty good but I am often left feeling unhappy with the level of customer service from the older lady in the shop. Other members of staff are a pleasure to talk to and are very helpful, especially the young man with the shaven hair. However the older lady in question visibly looks inconvienenced by the presence of customers in the shop, and huffs and puffs when you place your order. On the last two occasions I've visited here she looks visibly irritated when I've asked for a battered sausage and has shouted "But we have none ready", because of this I've decided just to order something else as it's just not worth the hassle. This woman should not be working in a customer service position.

Went here in bank holiday Sunday. Service was very slow. Fish was tasty with crisp batter but chips were horrible think may have been cooked several times. The person who was serving white jacket looked dirty.

Would never go here again had a lasagne it was a microwaved 1 that u get for a 1.00 and have the nerve to charge 7.00 for it when u eat in they charge u extra for eating in my partner enjoyed his haddock and chips budt the lady is very rude serving

We were looking forward to a sit-down fish and chip meal. We placed our order and was almost handed the food when an extremely rude woman asked if we were eating in or out. We said "in" at which point she instructed the younger (friendly) assistant to put the chips back in the fryer. They were already covered in salt and vinegar. We were rudely signalled to go to the other end of the counter where we noticed the eat-in prices were doubled. We may have considered splashing out but the woman in question was so unpleasant we abandoned the order and headed towards the seafront where we found just what we needed, thankfully. How hard is it to smile and explain things calmly without assuming we were ignorant twits?

Whilst passing through Aber on Sunday we fancied some fish and chips. A couple of the chippies we have used in the past were either gone or closed. We went to the Central Fish Restaurant and ordered two fish and chips and a curry sauce. In all fairness the fish and chips were very nice. The staff were polite but be wary of the price you are charged, we reflected on this later and found that the splash of curry sauce over the one meal cost £1.60....

I've been here 4 times now. It's our Chou e of chippy when we come to the town. The fish is great the chips are brilliant! Good portion sizes. Great service and value. Why such bad reviews!

This is I far as I can say the best local chippy in Aberystwyth. The cafe is very basic but the food is excellent. The meal when it arrives is always hot and very good. We have been on many occasions and have never been dissapointed.

The cod was chewy and tasteless, and the amount of chips was pitiful. It might do at a push if you're hammered drunk, but sadly I was stone cold sober.

Visited this for the first time whilst on holiday, ordered fish and chips and was asked if I was paying now or later. A little baffled by this; but I agreed to pay now. Anyhow fish and chips arrived but wrapped up when I wanted to eat in. I was a little annoyed as they had not asked if I wanted to eat in or out. Unperturbed I sat down. I noticed a man staring at me and then a lady employee shouted at me across the entire busy restaurant saying U can't eat in unless it's on a plate. So... I went to the counter to get one. Then I was told there is a nearly £2 charge to eat in!!! After feeling completely and utterly humiliated I just wanted to leave so left extremely rapidly. Would not recommend, really bad service, very embarrassing experience plus had to pay for condiments.

This is the most consistent chip shop in the area, no frills just well cooked food. The staff are very pleasant,despite some of the reviews,so it I guess depends on how pleasant you are with them.Highly recommended.

We've been here quite a few times whilst on holiday in Aber. There's nothing fancy about the place for sure but the food is good. Freshly cooked and the service is quick. Used extensively by the locals which is always a good sign. If you are looking for no frills fish and chips you can't go wrong. Maybe some of the reviewers are setting their sights too high ?

Decent enough chips, does fancier "healthy" fish options but these don't wotk in my opinion - fish was dry and tasteless, v. expensive and took about 25 mins. Might aswell just stick with what you know

We always take away our meal, but all food is served the same way, always fresh never in our experience warmed up, the best batter I have ever tasted on fish and chips that are cooked , we have called here for the last 5 years and have yet to find anywhere that is as good. The owners are really nice and polite and take an interest in what they present.

What a dreadful place. We gave our order to someone who then went off to sweep the floor. A very stroppy women eventually gave us half our order and then huffed and puffed when we asked for the rest of it as if our custom was nothing but an inconvenience. Even if the food was amazing (it wasn't) they don't deserve anyone's business.

Après avoir testé the chip box, au bord de mer, nous avons mangé dans ce restaurant, ou le choix est beaucoup plus large.Les pies ont été appréciées.Le fish and chip, par contre, ne valait pas celui de Chip box4.Mais tout de même copieux, un peu plus cher tout de même. Mais abordable.On peut manger assis, à l'interieur. Beaucoup d'habitués.Bonne adresse, en résumé.

they always have foreign staff who get things wrong and get told off by the older lady, she is always shouting at them and they look terrified. Stop hiring foreign students who are probably paid cash in hand

Takeaway for lunch - 3 fish, 2 chips and a pie - over £16. Fish was ok but thick batter and cold. Chips were ok but using polystyrene containers doesn't keep them in the best condition, Pie was £2 and overpriced, Would not recommend.

I'm sorry but anywhere that classes itself as a 'fish and chip' shop and then serves the food in polystyrene containers needs to be rebranded. Chips were hot but the polystyrene container made them soggy, same for the fish batter. I won't be going back here.

Lovely takeaway or sit in for your food. Always consistently good so would recommend as well worth a visit.

Had the best fish supper ever here.We walked about in the evening and I must admit there is no shortage of eating places I could not see any places that did not look good but if you want a portion of good old cod and chips.....This is the place to go.

This Chippy is very expensive, the food was terrible, the place had a vile smell coming from over the counter, don't know if it was the staff or the shop.They take your order, then your cash, then they get your food, this was a bad sign. When the food was being packed, I could see why they take the money first.Stay away and walk down to chip box 4 on the front, cheaper and 10 times nicer food.

Food was cold and the chips were awful. Calling this a restaurant does extend the imagination. Cafe would surfice. Wouldn't go here again. Very costly for poor quality.

I trid this chip shop it is very basic in the seating but made up for it in the meal.The batter was really excellent very crispy excellent cod and chips.

The best fish and chips in all of Aberystwyth even after all these years. Fantastic food what else can you say?

This is a basic Fish and chip shop with a few extras. Basic seating and they charge extra for ketchup. But the batter on the fish was perfect - almost like a tempura batter, crisp and crunchy right to the end with moist, fresh fish inside. Faultless.

Been to the Central Fish Restaurant twice and on each occasion the food ahs been hot well cooked and presented on the plate.The staff were great when we visited and service was quickI think it is more of a Chip Shop than a Restaurant. Not somewhere to go for the romantic evening but for a meal it's great. Good value for moneyThere is a Car park nearby about a 5 minute walk should you just be passing through Aberystwyth.

It's a good chippy, although I find their chips very soggy, I like my chips to be crispy and that's what they're missing. The service could be improved, whenever I make an order I end up being asked for it many times by different members of the staff and one time they even got it wrong. They don't seem to be well organised in that respect.

My partner and I came here on our first night in Aberystwyth.The place, although essentially a chipper, is very nicely laid out. Clean, organised, plenty of seating.It seems popular with locals, as there was a steady stream of people in and out during our meal.The menu is great, a big selection, and the food was quick and tasty.My chicken and mushroom pie had proper chicken pieces in it, and my partner got a huge piece of cod. The chips were lovely, although a little too greasy.The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food is great value for money.
