Recently had a nice bite to eat. The food really is 5*. And we thought the new ‘outdoor’ seating area was fab! Not at all windswept like in a previous visit. The tables are nicely spaced and it’s decorated well with tasteful artificial plants. Only gripe is the service didn’t live up to the amazing food. There was a waitress taking phone bookings and 2 standing alongside watching her. It took an age to get the waitresses attention for extra orders, etc. Inside seemed to be a hive of activity. Staff had a totally different mindset. A couple proactively asked if they could help. Will definitely be back, but an eatery is only as good as it’s staff.

It was so lovely to go out and have a meal with a friend here. We had one of the salads which looked and tasted gorgeous and a ‘mini’ Fish and chips! The fish was delicious- so crispy but not oily on the outside and flaky on the inside. Tartar sauce was very good too! The chips were perfect - again crispy on the outside and tasty on the inside! Pudding was a lovely gooey brownie with cream and raspberry! I really enjoyed the ‘home made’ ice tea! The cafe was well placed with tables spaced out however our inevitable was right opposite the door! So a tad cold..but thought it was good ventilation!

Stopped in for lunch today and was delighted at the fantastic welcome we got. Our lunch (fish & chips and coronation chicken) was great and we finished off with a delicious strawberry tart each. My husband also commented that it was the best coffee he’d had in a long time so top marks to your barista.

I would like to express my appreciation for a service which feel was above excellent in difficult circumstances. Castleton delivered a truly magnificent selection of food to my elderly parents (who have been shielding for over a year) for their anniversary. To say it made their day is a gross understatement! The food was fresh, in sensible sized portions with a good variety, well presented and delivered with a smile! Many thanks to Pamela for excellent customer service from phone call to delivery. Very reasonably priced too. We are all looking forward to being able to visit personally but in the meantime, keep up this great service. Heartfelt thanks to you all.

I am full of admiration for the Castleton staff and management for continually embracing all that this pandemic has thrown at them. They were always one step ahead of change. Having visited several times during the past year, initially just for a takeaway coffee and bacon roll or shopping for some of their delightful produce, to sitting “socially distant” outdoors under marquees and later enjoying the luxury of their extended outdoor restaurant during the summer months… and it didn’t stop there, with the installation of screening and heaters to ensure their patrons would continue to be comfortable during the colder months. The overall quality of their food, their catering services, their delivery services and the pleasant and efficient services of their waiting staff have all been first class and should be congratulated. Also, their regular updates throughout, on Facebook, have been helpful and amusing!

Went to Castleton farm shop and cafe today for lunch but ended up leaving 10 minutes after we arrived. Firstly, COVID measures poorly put in place. I checked website before going to see if they had a COVID update on their website as I wasn’t sure wether I needed to book or not but they didn’t. When we got there, no one was at the door and we could’t see any signs asking us to wait to be seated. Staff walked by and ignored us so we decided we must just have to find a seat. Once in the outdoor seating, a waitress with long dark hair shouted at us that we should have waited at the door. She then stormed back to the front door with a scowling face and asked us for a name and number. She led us out to the outdoor seating area, taking off in front of us and didn’t say another word. She seated us right next to the temporary wall which has a 2” gap all the way around the glass or Perspex. It was freezing. There were plenty of other tables away from the ‘windows’. We thought we were being punished for not understanding the COVID procedures. Next waitress with blonde hair came to take order and I asked if we could move tables as it was far too cold where we were. Although she was far more polite than the person who seated us, she told us there were no seats inside. I told her we just wanted one away from the window and she looked at me blankly. That’s when we decided to leave and walked past at least 3 empty tables well away from the windows! As we left dark haired waitress said ‘Bye now’ in a snidy tone! Never been treated so disgustingly in any eatery! Won’t be back!

Visited for the first time on a Tuesday morning. Met at the door by friendly assistant. We hadn't booked but it wasn't a problem at the time we were there. I would advise booking though, especially at lunchtime. Service was quick. Our coffees arrived followed by 2 bacon rolls. Coffee was super hot, just the way we like it. The bacon rolls were superb. Plenty bacon on a proper bakery roll. Fabulous, the best bacon roll we've had in a long time. We will definitely be back. The farm shop is great and we came away with berries from the farm and local tatties and eggs.

As ever the bacon rolls are prize wining!! Looking forward to going back next week. Thank you for keeping us safe. Ona & Allan

We visited last Sunday for lunch. Our first restaurant visit since the beginning of lockdown Very well set up for social distancing, they are certainly doing all they can. Food was lovely, as expected. Fish and chips and roast beef special. Very tasty. We asked for a meringue and strawberry tart to take away. The meringues were finished but were made up for us. Well worth the wait. Great service from the helpful staff. If sitting outside, wear warm clothes and maybe bring a blanket to ward off the wind.

Went here recently for the first time during Covid guidlines but been many times before. Firstly the one way system wasnt set up great as the arrow sign on the door directs you in the wrong direction as its meant to address people on the other side of it!! We walked round the back following the direction of the arrow, really stupid! Essentally the main entrance/exit is now just the exit. The entrance was moved around to the left side of the building so no idea whay that couldn't be made VERY clear from the start. We sat inside and there are numerous plastic screens up between the tables and everything is better spaced out. The breakfasts here are always pretty fab. Never had issues before, however, on this occasion EVERYTHING was very cold. It was so off-puting and ruined everything. It wasn't even slightly warm, it was COLD. We told the staff at the till when paying and we were given an acceptable reduction so that was reasonable of them. One of the chefs then came out and appologised and thanked us for advising them. I think it was a real shame that things weren't great with the food but it was very admirable that they took responsibility and valued our feedback. I think thats more important as things go wrong for everyone but accountability takes strength to show.

I went to Castleton on a recommendation and have to say that I was deeply disappointed. First of all the table itself was sandwiched between what I can only describe as display boards and whilst I fully understand social distancing this was like sitting in a call centre canteen. There was outdoor seating in tents but workmen close by were making such a noise it was better inside.I ordered the Minnow fish and minnow it was, the batter was overcooked and the food was cold. My husband had a curry and was given a splatter of salad on the side of the plate, surely a naan bread or popadom would have been more fitting and for £12.95 was very poor quality. Our friend has the steak sandwich and it too was cold, later she was sick and not sure whether it was the food or a bug but did seem a bit of a coincidence .The bill came to £40 and did include 2 coffees and 2 drinks however for the quality of the food it was far too much to pay and I will not be back. You can get the same quality if not better form Weatherspoons for just over a £5

Been a while since I've been here, so I took my parents out for breakfast on Christmas Eve. My mum thought ahead and decided maybe others had the same idea so emailed to reserve a table. We arrived at 10am and were greeted by a blonde lady and said we had a reservation. She didn't check the book for our reservation and just waved her hand in the direction of the restaurant and said 'just choose a table'. Hmm, not great service. We were then greeted by a more helpful lady who found our reservation and guided us to our table. As soon as we sat down, the blonde lady came over and said 'did you reserve this table?'. We had already mentioned about our reservation previously, so she hadn't listened to us.That aside, we ordered breakfast. My parents ordered the waffles and bacon and my husband ordered the full breakfasts. It was served very quickly and were very delicious. The only thing that was missing was mushrooms. We had lunch at Castleton on a Saturday using an itison voucher. I had booked our table ahead, as we know how busy it is, especially at the weekends. We received a very warm welcome and were shown to our table right away. There is a more limited set menu when using an itison voucher, but rest assured portions are no smaller, (unlike some places who do the itison deals). My husband chose the Fish and Chips and I had the Ceasar's Salad. The meals came very quickly, given how busy the restaurant was. We were fascinated to watch the staff in the kitchen from our table, coping admirably with so many lunch orders). We both chose the wonderful Strawberry Tarts for our dessert and as I asked to take mine home, it was no trouble at all for the waitress to bring mine in a cake box.Our two course deal was a terrific value £13 for the two of us. My husband had a pot of tea, and I had 2 lattes also. We hadn't been for a while and enjoyed looking and purchasing in the shop too, and my husband sampled some Keith Brewery beers from the Sales Rep for the company and purchased some of their great choice of beers.Castleton is always consistent and even with the detour, due to the unsafe bridge it seems to be thriving and very busy, as always. It arrived promptly and was fine but lacked a certain zazzazazoom, if you know what I mean. Although it was described as a cooked breakfast, the nice tomato was stone cold and seemed to have come straight from the fridge. The egg and baked beans were fine and although I am not a sausage fan, theirs was good. The bacon looked like it was cooked with a flat iron. Dead flat. My pudding, 'meringue' didn't melt in my mouth it was more like overly sweet hard sickening toffee. My wifes fruit crumble was a mess and resembled puke.

If you're going here for afternoon tea, please make sure you are hungry. Superb selection of sandwiches (all filled to the max), scones to die for (with cream and jam), and home made sticky things to satisfy the fussiest palate. Highly recommended.

We had a very nice lunch served by pleasant and efficient staff. When we arrived at around 1pm my first reaction was we have made a mistake as it seemed so busy but my worries were unfounded. Our order was taken quickly and we did not have to wait long for our lunch to be served. We had the best fish and chips that we have had in a long time followed by lovely strawberry tarts. The shop was very good as well, even if some of the items were a little on the expensive side. My wife managed to find some slightly different gifts as she is thinking about Christmas already. Will definitely be going back.

The Castleton has by far the best scones I've tasted in a long while. The jam is homemade too. Their meringues & strawberry tarts are massive. They grow all their own berries & distribute to some supermarkets like Tesco & M&S.; They are definitely worth a vist.

We often stop off here when traveling to and from Aberdeen. The food is wholesome, well presented by friendly staff. The cafe is part of a fruit farm and the quality of the soft fruit sold is also excellent and inexpensive.

We visited last week with my mother in law for lunch and it was lovely as usual. The deserts were amazing ( Don't be scared to share as they are large). Usual shop fare and their strawberries are amazing. We were put off going here for a few years by bad reviews but our son said to try as its half way between our home and his and they love going there, we gave it a go and since then we haven't looked back and have always enjoyed going and look forward to going back. The food has always been of high quality.

Been coming here a while now and it's a great place to meet up. It's really easy to get to and the restaurant is bright and spacious. The shop sells a good range of local and not-so-local food, drink and gifts and the prices aren't as steep as some other farm shops need to set. We got kilo bags of not-top-quality berries for freezing for a couple of pounds, good enough for cooking with or jam.

I bought a jar of a new jam from Castleton and the blueberries still had lots of very long stocks still attached. I also found a piece of fruit with something attached, which looked like a piece of plastic which had been boiled with the fruit. I contacted the shop and returned the product for a full refund and was told the owner would be in touch to discuss the matter. I am still awaiting the owner to contact me 5 days later !

Great restaurant with wonderful waiting staff who are totally attendant at all times, Food is first class and the waiting time is really fast. Haddock is tremendous and you can have it any way you want. Visited with Canadian newly weds to show them around the Mearns and the staff on hearing their accents engaged them in conversation to find that they were newly weds and then served them complimentary strawberry tarts in celebration.

My wife, my mother and I stopped at Castleton Farm Café for a bite to eat on our way home from a short break in Fife. My wife had visited before with her sister and recommended it. The café is of a good size and is very tastefully decked out. The menu looked great with a selection of snacks and meals. We all had sandwiches which were made with lovely fresh, quality bread. They weren't short of filling and were served with a nice wee salad and some potato crisps. The service is second to none. Our order took barely a couple of minutes to arrive at our table. The meals being served to the diners around us looked amazing. Nice big fillets of battered fish, burgers, all looked wonderful. We also visited the shop after eating as we wanted to buy some of their soft fruit. You never want to buy supermarket fruit again after you taste fruit of this quality. They also sell many other quality local and Scottish food stuffs. There is a nice wee children's play area outside. Be sure to visit next time you're in the vicinity. I'll certainly be back again.
