Unfortunately each time we go to Castle Rock, the food seems to have got worse. Last year it was really good and our go-to when in Edinburgh. We ordered mixed kebabs which were ok (doner was nice but other meat a bit tough). Chips are really nice as you would expect with a chip shop. Pizza was extremely poor - very thin base and ingredients were not good quality. The chicken was rubbery. Service was decent however and wait times were not long.

This place is seriously grim. Ordered a steak pie supper. Pie was dried out with no gravy and a miserable amount of meat. Chips were just a scoop of scraps. Great location for a chippy as it won’t have to rely on repeat trade.

The best fish and chips I’ve had in Edinburg. The fish actually has flavor! Chips are great too! All the other fish and chips have been bland and boring. Very nice family who helped us with our order and service!

This place is essentially to grab late night, drunks who won't care about quality or price. If at least the food was half decent you can accept the premium on the price for being open late but it was foul. Would have been better off not bothering but it was late and this was the only place open near my hotel.

This is easily the worst chip shop in Edinburgh city centre. The food is really greasy and unauthentic. If you are looking for genuine Scottish fish n chips please go elsewhere. I have been to this place twice now and on both occasions it was terrible! It is overpriced and horrible! Avoid! Bertie’s is minutes away and light years better!

The worst kebab I’ve ever eaten, and the fish and chips are that oily the batter was mushy, and to make it worst there’s a skinny little runt that serves you and he is such a rude b_____d he was lucky he didn’t get slapped, never go here rubbish

Went there as it was late and wanted to get back, totally regret going. Hamburger supper was over cooked and very oily, small portions of chips which was probably a good thing as they were awful. Overpriced is an understatement.

Overpriced, the fish that we got sat for hours on the side before being served and it was hard as a rock and disgusting. The service was awful as both employees were rude. Wouldn't recommend at all.

Located at the top corner of the Grassmarket it is in a good place. I had Chips with Haggis and something called a King Rib, it was terrible. The portion of chips was tiny, the haggis was dry and the king rib should of been called king of oil as it was full of oil and completely disgusting, horrible service. Yes they serve chips but really it is a general takeaway selling everything, just avoid. The friend I was with had Chips and Curry Sauce, this was OK

We arrived late in the night. I think it was around 3 am. We just wanted to eat something quick. The staff was friendly but they bossed us around. We got a reallly big portion and the food was really good.

I wasn't expecting much based on some of the reviews I had seen so I was pleasantly surprised when my fish was battered and fried on order as some place I've been to have the fish pre-battered. The chips were pre-made so I was expecting some low quality but they were the best part of the meal. The fish was ok, neither good or bad, and about half way through it becomes harder to each with the plastic fork provided. Also with no tartar sauce so the last few bites were on the dry side. Still it's a decent meal and you get a pretty big fish for your buck. Don't think I'd go back but I'm not disappointed I gave it a try.

Nos detuvimos aquí para comer un bocado rápido y tomar un poco del alcohol Fringe que habíamos estado consumiendo.Las patatas fritas son de muy buena calidad y los haggis fritos eran inusualmente más picantes.Todos los artículos en el menú tenían un precio muy razonable.

Went in to get out of the rain and grab something to eat before we headed back to the hotel and was glad we did, since we got to try the fried mars bars they had on offer. My panther got the fish and chips, and I got sausage and chips with gravy and it was all nice. The best part was the fried mars bar however, which is quite sickly so you only need one. The prices are average and what I'd expect for a chippy in Edinburgh city centre.

Anoche fui a la tienda de chips y recibí posiblemente el peor servicio al cliente que he tenido. Después de gastar 18 en una pizza pequeña, 2 porciones de papas fritas y un kebab, pedí una coca cola que me dijeron que era una más. 50. Pagué esto y cuando pedí mis papas fritas y queso me dijeron que nunca lo había pedido y que sería aún más dinero. Estando completamente sobrio sé muy bien lo que pedí. El servidor masculino luego agregó lo que había ordenado y en realidad no podía contar con 2, lo que obviamente era para el queso en mis papas pero nunca me lo dio. Después de que un miembro del personal rubio nuevamente dijera que nunca lo había pedido, me dijeron que "f * ck off be * tch". No estoy completamente seguro de qué tipo de entrenamiento de servicio al cliente está involucrado en ese rol, pero fue absolutamente espantoso y ciertamente nunca volveré y le diré a cualquiera que escuche que evite esta tienda de chips como la plaga. Definitivamente, presentaré una queja formal, ¡pero espero que quienquiera que lea esta crítica no entre, ya que el personal no tiene ningún respeto por sus memes de chat!

We did a short visit, and came across this place while wandering the city, I didn't want to pay full high street prices so this is a pound or so less than of many of the places up on the mile itself. It was good and generous portions, We dropped in as we got into Edinburgh late, First visit I did the deep fried haggis, she did the fish and chips, the following afternoon we got in just after it opened and I had the fish and chips, she had one of the baked potatoes, it was more than enough to fill us up for the evening flight. Friendly banter, seems to be setup for the pub crowd in grass market. I will gladly go back each time I'm in Edinburgh.

Having read the reviews I had decided this was the chippy to visit on my recent trip to Edinburgh. Unfortunately the fish was dry and over cooked and the chips were fine but nothing special. I wonder whether the fact that it was festival time meant the quality wasn’t quite up to usual standards? Shame but I’ll give it another go next time and see if it’s better when there aren’t the crowds to feed!

Loads of choice. We have got into the habit of supreme pizza at end of busy edfringe day walking all around the venues. Best value pizza and tastier than most.

Me lo que quieren probar una de las patatas al horno que he visto en pocos lugares en Edimburgo y finalmente tenía la oportunidad de probar uno para comer aquí. Me dieron judías, queso cheddar y chili con carne, en la parte superior de la mina y comimos en un montón aparcar en la calle. Mi hija quería pan cursi ajo, así que pedí que y ella me gustó. Mi papa era un maravilloso, satisfactorio almuerzo en un precio ridículamente bueno. Me encantó.

Dårlig service. Som i virkelig dårlig. Jeg var mildest talt chokeret over så snerpet et personale, nedladende og mere interesseret i at snakke med hinanden og stå og bestille yoghurt over de spisende hoveder da en af de ansatte skulle på pause. Fisken var ok og chipsene elendige. Jeg bestilte en burger - bollen var helt gennemvædet i bunden, kødet havde klumper i sig og ikke mindst var chipsene kolde, da jeg beder om nye vrisser servitricen af mig at de er varme, så beder jeg hende smage en - det vil hun ikke smider dem ud mens hun ryster på hovedet af mig og sender hendes kollega øjne. Jeg var chokeret. Spiste under halvdelen og måtte smide resten ud. Det eneste der blev spist færdig var fisken.

Estábamos hambrientos después de un largo día de paseos turísticos, sino porque era la época de no muchos restaurantes abiertos. Esta tienda nos alegró el día y nos alegramos de vino. Teníamos pescado y patatas fritas y nos quedamos muy satisfechos con la comida. De hecho, volvimos de nuevo durante nuestra estancia en Edimburgo.

Elegimos el Castillo de piedra donde está en el centro. Gusto de pescado era agradable sin el bateador, porque la sartén de aceite era realmente antiguo para ser honesto! Los puntos negros en el pescado y las patatas fritas mostrar el aceite viejo. Ese tipo de tienda en el centro no debería tener mala calidad!

Sólo visitamos el castillo de rock chips, la comida era estupenda. . Pero en mi vida me han hecho sentir como pedir sal n vinagre era un problema. . . Me gusta poner mis propios condimentos. . Mi sal n vinagre pusieron en para mí cuando me pidió más vinagre en me dijeron que trae mi comida más en vez de en mí mismo. . . . Es sal y vinagre no las joyas de la Corona. . . . . de donde provengo de sal y vinagre en el mostrador! ! ! !

Nos han atendido genial a altas horas de la noche. Te haces la pizza con los ingredientes que tu quieras.Totalmente recomendable !

Var innom her flere ganger da de stengte ved midnatt og det ikke var så mye annet å velge i ved hotellet. Veldig trangt der inne, som regel et par personer som venter på mat. men veldig god pizza og hamburger til en ok pris. Prøvde også Deep Fried Mars Bar, veldig spesielt. Grei betjening.

Gave this place a second chance about a bad experience previously, and I shouldn't have bothered.Overpriced, poor quality food and poor portions - got absolutely zero going for it.

I asked for onion rings that were clearly on the menu but told they couldn't cook them- not really a clear reason why. Could just have said they didn't have any that would have been easier. Was about to order 5 pizzas but due to poor customer service and generally dis- interested staff we went elsewhere. Shocking that this poor customer service is still evident.

Had takeaway twice here and both times the food was lovely. Battered haggis was interesting too. Definitely recommend.

Uns wurden unsere Portionen frisch zubereitet und konnten mit allerlei Saucen (Vinegar und Salz reicht m.E.) bestückt werden.Der Imbiss erscheint sauber und die Mitarbeiter sind höflich.Wer sich traut kann auch ein fritiertes Mars haben. Der Imbiss ist kein reiner Fisch & Chip Imbiss sondern es gibt diverse traditionelle (Imbiss) Speisen wie auch Kebab und Pizza.

After looking in old town to find the perfect place for fish and chips, we found the perfect meal at castle rock. The fish and chips were so fresh as we saw the chefs fry the fish and the chips first hand. The wait was 10 minutes, but it was totally worth it. Most pubs in Edinburgh as well as in London do not have that fresh taste in the potato chips like they did in castle rock. The pizza was also very good and of high quality. The man at the counters so friendly to us, and really made the experience worthwhile. The added fried Mars bar was also a delectable treat!!

Was looking for fish and chips in Edinburgh and saw this place on a couple of review sites. Mixed reviews but like to try for myself. Business was quiet due to the time of year, we gave our order and it was made from scratch there and then. Piping hot and delicious. I sat in the window and watched the bustling grass market go by. Small seating area available. Staff were pleasent. Simple fish and chips was what I wanted and was exactly what I got. If you want the same then check this pace out.

We had craving for fish and chips and this was the nearest one. I ordered a breaded haddock with chips for takeaway. We liked the fish, but felt the chips were poorly done.on a side note, another customer wanted their cheese topping to be melted and the staff placed the styrofoam box containing the food into the microwave. That you won't find anything healthy in a deep fried mars bar. At least if you take the risk of a stroke you expect something tasty. Sorry, also not the case. The fish and chips is ok but rather tasteless, the fried pizza is absolutely tasteless and rather disgusting. If you plan to go during the weekend be warned of dozens of drunken locals, already at around 7 p.m.

We ate lunch here one day after spending the morning exploring Edinburgh. The fish and chips looked really good. Cooked just right, light, without being greasy. The staff were very good about checking for food allergens. The shop is very clean and sanitary. The portions were very large. We had them wrap the leftovers and we ate them later. The store was very busy for lunch, a good sign!

Thank you so much to the girl taking our order and surprising my son by giving him an unexpected treat. Btw, the Quattro stagione pizza was delicious.

Regards of the comment about the hygiene, the bucket of water? Obviously don't know how it works in Scotland but that bucket of water is for hand rinsing after using the batter only! If you weren't happy with that you should have said and you would've got a full refund!!

Ok I really wish I had seen the ladies do what they did before I ordered and ate my fish and chips. The women serving and cooking had a bucket on the counter with cleaning cloths in it, so far that's ok, keeping food prep areas clean is good, what they did next is disgusting, the cook wiped down the counter put the cleaning cloth back in the bucket, after dipping fish in batter and placing it in the fryer she washed her hands in the same bucket with the dirty cleaning cloths, yuck, disgusting, this is a basic food hygiene no no! If they can't get the basics right what happens after hours?I would not recommend Castle Rock. I don't give a single star rating lightly, but these people deserve it.

A very convenient spot just at the end of the Grassmarket to grab a deep fried Mars Bar. A fantastic delicacy to try... Probably not more than once as delicious as it was!

I travel to Edinburgh every year for the Festival (17 years in a row and counting) and I make it a point to pick up a haggis supper from Castle Rock at least once on each visit. It's conveniently located, the food always tastes good, and while the staff might not be the friendliest in the world, they're authentic chipper people, and that's far more important to me than the smiling automatons you find in chain restaurants. Enjoy Edinburgh's fine-dining restaurants by all means when you visit, but make sure your treat yourself to a taste of the real Edinburgh too, and this is as good a place to do that as any.

El mejor Fish and Chips (para llevar)q he probado en mi vida, teniendo en cuenta q no es un plato selecto sino fritanga...pero si vas a UK hay q probar uno. El pescado estaba rico rico. Eso y una cervecita comprada fresquita en el Sainsbury's q está a unos 5 minutos de allí, me solucionaron el almuerzo por un precio razonablemente económico.
