Castle Fish & Chips in Gwynedd

Recommendation from the holiday accommodation we were staying in and it didn’t disappoint. There is always a queue which speaks for itself. Great fish and chips, good service from staff.

Stopped here just before closing at lunch time and joined the queue. It was well worth the wait. The order was taken at the door by friendly young lady as there are only two customers allowed inside the shop at a time. The wait is because the fish is cooked freshly for each customer. Delicious crispy batter and lovely thick flakes of cod served with tasty not greasy chips. Highly recommended for quality and price.

Excellent Fish and Chips. Had to wait a little white but fish was very well cooked with light crispy batter and chips were great. Good conversation with servers while we waited and food was reasonably priced. Would recommend giving it a try.

You will have to queue, but most definitely worth the wait. Tastiest, crispiest batter. Just be aware, price of food is reasonable but you get charged extra per fork and for a paper bag.

Fab chippy, the real deal. Just stopped for chips as are allowed to move more due to local restrictions in Wales being lifted. Always wanted to try it but never passed at the right time... until now. Friendly and welcoming, came outside to take our order in advance. The chips and potato scallops were amazing!

Visited today , went on reviews on Tripadvisor, it was excellent. Covid rules strictly in place, fish was really really good, crispy crunchy batter, big flakey white fish, delicious. Chips tasty, hot and plentiful. And the best bit- absolutely no grease. Reasonably priced, recommend.

We arrive to the village to visit the castle and since it was dinner time we noticed the queue outside the fish and chips. The wait has rewarded us ! Great food, large portions and great price. Ciao e grazie !!!!!

Great fish. Good crispy batter. Good Service. Very very Small portions. Quite expensive. Took orders outside due to Covid 19. System worked well.

After reading all the marvelous reviews we decided to give it a try as we were staying over the road. We ordered 3 sausage and chips, one child's portion. Food was great but we seemed to all receive a child's portion of chips. Wouldn't return due to small portions but like I said in the title maybe this was a mistake?

Really good food and prices, however the wait was very long - 30mins for two small trays of chips, they only serve the first few members of the queue at a time no matter the size of the orders. Definitely worth going but be prepared for a long wait.

During our stay in Criccieth we had seen many visitors to the town sitting along the promenade with fish and chips in lap, wondering where they had been - the smell was divine. So we checked it out and discovered that Castle Fish & Chips was the place to visit and off we duly went. The queue was unexpected! Prepare to wait for 20-30 minutes. But, it is well worth the wait. Beautifully fresh fish, delicious chips, a classic done super well with friendly staff working very hard to deliver. As the saying goes, all good things...

Cod and chips well worth the short wait in a socially distanced line along Castle Street. Cooked well, great quality, friendly service. Perfect way to end the day.

Popped in today as we were looking for some where to have something to eat. Read the reviews and were not disappointed. The batter on the fish was crispy and was not over greasy. The fish its self was lovely and flaky. The chips where beautifully cooked and the portions were perfect. Along side that I had a pot of curry sauce and my wife had some beans. Both were of great quality. Highly recommend this Fish and Chip shop and will definitely come again.

We always thought The Mermaid at Barmouth was the best North Wales chippy. Not anymore Castle chippy rules. The fish is cooked to order and never disappoints. They are also very Covid safe.

Last time I went in here one of the staff was sucking on their thumb before handling food. Never again.

Best fish and chips I’ve ever had: been consistently coming to Castle Chippy for years and never had a bad experience. There’s a bit of a queue normally but it’s worth the wait, the batter on the fish is so fresh and light and the chips are amazing, not all stogy and weird the way you get in some chippys! The family team who run it are really friendly too!

Honestly it's hard to find fault. There was a bit of a wait, but it was absolutely worth it. Crispy batter, delicious tender fish, great chips. Can't go wrong!

We have been coming to castle fish and chip shop for 3 years. There simply isn't another like it. Best fish,sausage and chips ever! We always visit at least twice during our stay in Cricceith. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

Been a regular visitor to this family run business over a number of years for their quality fish and chips . Always worth the wait for the freshest produce. Sensible portions , crisp and non greasy ,eat them on the beach or the esplanade along with the majestic views of the coastline an experience not to be missed! Forgot to say very sensible system for dealing with Covid ,well organised with sensible distancing . Here’s to the next visit .

Came here in the lost COVID era and they have a great process in place to keep customers moving through. Food as great as ever.

We got there 20 mins before opening at were second in the queue! We have been plenty of times so we know about the wait -however it was very organised post lock down - the lady takes the orders outside and you go in one at a time. As always the fish and chips were heaven! Portion size excellent, perfectly crispy light batter and scrumptious salty chips all devoured with a beautiful view in front of us. What more could you want on a summers Sunday evening?! Highly recommended....get there early!

GLUTEN FREE FISH AND CHIPS The Castle Fish & Chip shop in Porthmadog, Wales They have a separate fryer for chips so they are completely gluten free with no risk of cross contamination and they did me a steamed fish! I’m guessing they didn’t do gluten free batter, but it was still delicious! ❤️ The mushy peas were gluten free too If you’re unsure just ring ahead to assure yourself they are coeliac safe, I’m coeliac and had no reactions whatsoever so they must be super careful !

We did have to queue for our food but it was worth the wait. Delicious fish and chips. Worth a visit.

Just stopped here for take away fish and chips and not disappointed. Everything cooked fresh and was delicious. Very ‘covid aware’ with organised order and queuing system. Pleasant staff too. They have a captive audience being right by the castle and beach but that doesn’t stop them providing first class food and service. Will be back when I’m next in Criccieth.

Don’t usually write reviews but - Top quality food. Outstanding- freshly cooked , proper chips. Get there early (post Covid) to avoid the queue!

We visited here last week on our holiday to Wales. We were served and greeted by lovely staff who were about to close after there lunch shift (we didn’t realise at the time) but our order was no problem for them. They cooked our fish and chips fresh and our sons meal too. They made us feel very welcome as they spoke to us whilst our food was cooking. Our fish was lovely and the batter was light. Would definitely recommend and will visit again in the future. We managed our climb up snowdon the next day

Excellent food all cooked fresh to order. Served by lovely people/owners who were friendly and efficient in their service. The food was good value for the price. The place looked very clean and hygiene standards appeared very good. Highly recommend if you are visiting the area. Thank you for a delicious meal.

Don’t often eat fish and chips, made an exception in this case, twice in one week! Both times fish was fresh and perfectly cooked and chips good too.highly recommended.

Cracking fish and chips. Social distancing and the queue were managed well. The chips were good and the fish was lovely and coated in a very light and crispy batter. All freshly cooked and very much enjoyed by all of us.

I am very concerned that the vegetable oil is not changed every day.As the owner says it is"cleaned and filtered".The very act of heating the oil changes the composition and there is a strong consensus of opinion that it releases carcinogenic products after regular heating.

We went there last August and were very disappointed as were some other customers.All started out promisingly, I turned up, gave my order saying I wanted newly fried fish, which they duely started to cook... Whilst I was waiting the chap frying the fish started talking to another member of staff about a friend of his who ran another fish and chip shop; saying how pedantic he was because he changed his oil and cleaned out the friers and filters everyday. To which the other staff member replied 'He does that everyday what we do at the end of the season?'I should have left at this point, but I assumed she must have been referring to the cleaning of the filters and not the oil.When we tried to eat our fish, the fish itself was good quality but was completely spoilt by the old rancid taste of the oil. It was disgusting and not only confined to the fish but the chips as well. On top of that when I tried to eat the fish, loads of oil oozed out of the fish, through the paper wrap and all over my jeans. Probably at least half a teacup of oil if not more.We threw most of our meal away as it was just too revolting. I went back to complain but they had closed, which was odd as it was only 8:30pm.Walking back to our car on the sea front I noticed another couple, who had ordered fish and chips from the same place, chucking out half eaten portions muttering how oily and unpleasant it was.We will obviously never go back, nor should you.

Decided to try castle fish and chips in Criccieth after reading reviews. It has been a long time since I’ve had fish and chips this good, brought back memories. The fish was sweet, the batter light, and the chips soft inside and not soggy. Lovely people serving us, we decided to eat in and rest after a walk .

Went here on a pouring down day and what a pick my up. Lovely fish and chips and mushy peas my husband could not stop praising them and he is fussy about his fish suppers.

There is nothing better than eating fish and chips from a tray, sat on a bench taking in the magnificent views over the bay. The fish was cooked perfectly and the chips hot and fresh - delicious!

Been going here for years and never been disappointed. There is a small seating area at the back of the premises - just 5 tables of 4. We always have the Castle Special which is great value and as noted by others, the food is excellent.

Went today as on holiday following reviews on here and a recommendation. We had take away fish and chips, they only do one size which isn't a huge issue but the take away portion sizes for all six meals were so small and nothing like the photos I've seen on here. The fish was ok but the chips were soggy and the portion size hardly filled the polystyrene container. I was really looking forward to this but sadly this did not live up to expectations. I can only assume we were unlucky, an expensive unlucky and wouldn't go here again or recommend it.

Went in with an order for 8 of us which was no problem, and service was very quick. The food was all cooked fresh - chips were delicious and the fish batter was crisp but not too thick. We were staying close by to the takeaway and saw people every day enjoying fish and chips by the beach, so it is obviously popular with locals and visitors.

I am not the worlds greatest fan of fish and chips but these are sublime. We stayed in the town for a week and ate there 4 times which verges on ridiculous but they are that goodBest traditional Fish and chips I have ever eaten

We have just had a week's self catering holiday in Criccieth. As we didn't fancy cooking on the first night we had fish and chips from Castle Fish and Chips. They were excellent.and everything was perfectly cooked. Even the rather fussy foodie among us was impressed!

Gets very busy and you can see why. Fish and my fish cake freshly cooked. Chips portions about right for one person. Good value

We come to just outside Criccieth every year and our holiday would not be the same without fish & chips from The Castle. It is the best by far, the fish has the thinnest , crispiest batter and the chips are really nice and never oily or soggy. It is well worth quequeing for, a queque of customers who are prepared to wait tells o you a lot about the quality of the food.

Was told that this was the best fish and chips to be had so went there to find that there was around 20 people queuing up in a tiny little shop. So stood in a hot chip shop waiting to order which took an age!!! so was looking forward to the best fish and chips i have ever had. This was not the case at all. The fish batter was soggy, the chips had no taste to them, could have cooked better in my oven!! They don't take card, cash only so be prepared to take cash with you or you will have to walk to the nearest cash machine which is a 10 minute walk away making it 20 minutes there and back and on your return you will be back to 20th in the queue. Be prepared that if people have pre-ordered their food, they will arrive and be served before you making your wait even longer!!!! Definitely not worth the wait or the money spent. There are other chips shops in the town such as Paddy's Plaice which unfortunately, we did not have time to visit but will do on my next visit.

Nice and fresh and tasty but the fish could be better. It seems a little uniform like it’s from a machine. Tastes ok but could be fresher. Portion size was also a little small. All round not bad.

Decided to get takeaway from this place having looked at other reviews and really enjoyed the food. The fish was really thick and tasty and there weren’t too many chips. Would go there again

Busy as usual, great fish and chips, and actually got enough vinegar for once. Sat on the beach to enjoy them, my yearly treat.

On such a magnificent stretch of coastline one might expect superlative fish. Well, not here I’m afraid. Despite a long line of hopeful holiday makers the fish and chips at Castle Fish & Chips is mediocre at best. My plaice was so thin as to be evidenced by a thin white line between the thicker batter. The chips were ok but tasted of fish and lacked any crispy bits. The high point of the experience was the smiling table service.

Had a mini fish and chips, my partner had fish chips peas and gravy. Food was excellent. They were waiting to close up but didnt rush to get us out they were friendly and chatty. Would definetly recommend this place and and cant wait to visit again.

We had their most popular - cod & chips. The cod was battered and whilst the fish inside the batter was great, there was too much batter and not enough fish. The chips were mushy. We were so disappointed as the queue outside this shop would suggest a much better quality of food.

Staying locally, this offers both take away and on site fish n chips. We choe tp take away. very lovely fish n chips. crispy batter and so well cooked chips also lovely. Very busy place and popular with locals and tourists. Great Chipper..

Fish's batter was light and crispy but inside was moist and tender. The chips was light and again the inside was moist. We enjoyed it!

We knew from having been in Criccieth for a week that queues started forming outside the chippy 10 mins before opening time - always a good sign! I had also seen it had good reviews and an excellent hygiene rating. When we got there about 30 mins after opening in the evening, the queue (for takeaway) was just inside the shop and moved steadily. They have an excellent range of choices on the menu and we went for veggie burgers (that came in a bun), sausage and steak and onion pie, all with chips. It was very reasonably priced, the chip portions were just the right size and it was all very tasty. Well deserved good reputation.

Friendly staff and good tasty fish and chips. I would like a slightly larger portion but I have a large appetite. The rest of the family thought it was the perfect size.

Was told "smile, it may never happen" as we stood for over an hour to be served simple fish and chips. When I said to the owner that it's not his place to tell me what to do, just to serve chips more quickly, he could not help himself but to just keep answering back, pushing the argument. Get on with the chips, man!

Advised by proprietor of our b& b to go to this chippy , go to back and sit in to eat. Really tasty and plenty of food. Staff very friendly. Only accept cash though

The constant long queue outside the chippy made us wonder if this was a special place, so I dutifully waited and was well-rewarded! They gave me steamed cod with my chips. They pointed out that the chips may have traces of wheat from the oil but as I'm not coeliac I am ok with that. The fish was beautifully fresh and the chips were gloriously richly fried. With some mushy peas and tartare sauce, what's not to like?

Visited to get take-out chips on our first night in Criccieth. I joined the queue out the door and halfway back up the street. An hour later, I was at the counter getting served. It's VERY popular at peak times, so either be prepared to queue or go elsewhere

We were a group of about 20 in Criccieth for a family wedding. We met at the beach for fish & chips and found the Castle chippy. There was a queue which is always a good sign. People had travelled a fair distance for this place. The food was great and worth the wait.

Our fourth or so visit here. Lovely fish and chips, but always a very long queue - 35 minutes this time for cod and chips. Have eaten in before too which was a bit quicker but taking out and eating on the beach is our tip!

We decided to try this chippy while on holiday in Criccieth last week, as people were queuing around the block and so we decided it must be really good! We went at lunchtime and though there weren't many people waiting and there were four people serving, we still had to wait for over half an hour. This was partly because the man in front of us didn't realise they didn't take cards and had to go out for cash! Probably a lesson to be learned there? Anyway, when we finally got our food it was tasty but, to be honest, no better than our local chippy back home and the portions were definitely smaller. Still, it was nice to eat it on the beach looking out to sea.

We had regular fish and chips. The fish was excellent. The chips are much to soft and squishy. To bad because otherwise this would be best f&c; in town.

Had takeaway from here on first night of our holiday, large order to feed 13. So good we went back for more on the last night on the holiday. You can tell how good the food here is by the queue, but don’t let this put you off as the service and food is so good. Staff well organised and very friendly.

Fish and chips may be Britain's favourite food but when I buy them I expect a high standard. I hate greasy food, hate hard batter, hate overcooked chips. This shop gives its customers the best perfectly cooked food and deserves to do well. This can not be said of all fish and chip shops. Well done to them for caring enough and having pride in their food.

Went on a recommendation, there was a queue out the door on a Saturday night, and I can fully understand why. Delicious fish and chips and friendly service. No better way to start the holiday.

So many positive things have been said of this place already..and the queues at the door at all times of day are testimony to that!

Sweet Jesus of Nazareth, every time I visit this chippy the queue is out of the door, please don’t for one minute think.... arrr that’s obviously because the food is so nice, no it isn’t, don’t get me wrong, it’s good, but the chip shop is NEVER ready to serve a customer, they either don’t have any chips ready or are waiting for fish, even at opening time! It’s honestly a surprise to them when someone orders a fish with chips, they start looking around like a couple of meerkats, all confused.... fish AND chips? I missed all of eastenders and Coronation Street in that queue one day, the deep fat fryer must work off a sundial. It’s like a scene from an Alfred Hitchcock movie, all that’s missing is a shower curtain and a 10” blade. The old boy that goes to fetch the cut potato from out the back is like the villain from Scooby Doo. Do yourself a favour and buy a trawler, catch your own fish, it would be quicker. I went into the shop clean shaven and came out looking like Robin Williams in Jimanji. Obviously I’ll be back in there on Friday night, lol, just for the entertainment value.

This chip shop is by far the best in the local area! You'll be standing in a que for ages but it's worth the wait!

Locals and regular visitors! Always a decent line to wait in but on the whole a great little chippy, only down side for me is the portion size being a big lad! But that’s not their issue.

The queues out the front door should be a bit of a clue, but when random strangers in the queue tell you that they keep coming back because they are "the best chips in the world", you know that you have made a good choice. Fish and chips as they are meant to be; tasty, super fresh and great value.

On visiting Criccieth I was guided to this Chip Shop by a local person who said it was very popular and to get there early ( opens at 5pm) as it has won awards and is very popular.

On holiday down here was recommended to try here for some fish and chips definitely worth coming tasty fish good chips and you only have a short walk to the sea front what’s better than a beautiful sea view and good old fish and chips

Had fish and chips this evening and as our visit last year they were perfect. Nice thick fish with a thin batter, lovely chips all perfectly cooked and at a moderate price too. All cooked to order too so very fresh. Highly recommended.
