There are follies and there are follies but Bannold Station is a monument like no other: exquisitely prepared food, gardens of wonder and a grandiloquent railway that goes nowhere and offers everything. Impossible to pin down it's tribute to imagination and care and, given that its relative is a highly successful building supplies company, more extraordinary than even Alice could have seen in Wonderland. Take the day off and go. Our servers Megan and Emma were truly enjoying their work; maybe the full Lyons Corner House hose would be the cherry on top of the cake.

I was really excited at being taken out for tea on my birthday to such an unusual venue, but sadly the venue, the food, the service and lack of disabled facilities were disappointing. I was contacted in advance about dietary requirements and stated that I was Pescatarian. I had anticipated at least one smoked salmon sandwich, but instead got 2 x tuna/onion. The other sandwich was Coronation chick pea (very mushy) and finally a couple of slices of egg with a strip of watercress . I was not offered a choice of teas nor a refill. As there was no hot water, I just drank cold tea. However, the scones were light, fresh and delicious. And generous portions of jam and cream. Good selection of pastries, if rather on the small size. I got the feeling of the place being understaffed. In summary, I felt that the price was way too high for the food and service. I believe that the owners were charging for the uniqueness of the venue, whilst cutting back on the quality of the food and good service.

Having people over from the USA we thought it would be a nice place to go. The setting is great and the experience also, but the £25 per head for the few cakes and dainty sandwiches were a bit disappointing. Again the money I think is in, 'The going and doing something different.' All six of us agreed we would make this a one off and not go again. Everything has a worth and we were not sure this gave that to us. I also think we had the low cost menu .

3rd time lucky and worth the wait! Had to cancel twice due to illness. Most accommodating. You do need to book well in advance, which confirms its popular, great and worth it. Great food, beautifully served. Not majorly expensive for the wonderful food. Said price as when I booked last October and had in April. Menu priced the same on the day, so wasn't a 'held' price Everything was top notch, even down the vibration and clickety clack sounds, even though you went nowhere. We bought a couple of bits home because we couldn't manage them. Very nice next day. Everything was home grown or produced as much as possible and it was exquisite. The sandwiches were really fresh and delicious. Wonderful mocktails, an extra. Unlimited tea. What's not to like? Thank you

I'm wary of ordering mussels in restaurants - but as this was the first night of opening after lockdown restrictions were lifted I figured they would be fresh and gave them a chance. So glad I did! The finest I have ever had! That was my starter. My wife had the mackerel pate starter, which she said was delicious. I had the 10oz rib eye steak for my main course, which was beautifully cooked - rare and full of flavour and so tender. It came with a generous portion of chips - the menu called them fries, but to me that means the thin overcooked hollow flavourless things served by the big burger chains. These were nothing like that. Big, crisp on the outside, fluffy potato on the inside. Top marks. They do themselves an injustice, calling them fries. My wife had seafood risotto, which she loved. Great big prawns, large slices of fish in a huge tasty rice dish.By the end of that, we were too stuffed to manage any dessert, which I regret, given the quality of the dishes we had. Highly recommended.

Provenance Kitchenlocation-iconHill Farm RoadBritish

We’ve visited Provenance a few times in the summer and it is normally a treat. We popped in for lunch this week and it was really disappointing though. Firstly the restaurant was cold. I didn’t take off my coat and gloves the whole time we were there. For starter I had a pork croquette. It was a lump. The size and shape of a Gregg’s sausage roll and a really peculiar texture. I only ate half of it. For main course my husband had a lamb burger. It was left on the side for ages and almost cold. The amount of cumin in the mayo made it very peculiar. Our fries were also almost cold. My main course, pork loin, was underdone in places and over in others. It came with a gravy that wasn’t mentioned on the menu. I wouldn’t have ordered it had I known. Overall, we won’t be rushing back. Staff apologised and took the cost of the fries off our meal (£4). The experience still cost us £67. Very unimpressed.
