ive had a lot of bad experiences past few years with people I thought were close to me and with all the bad you see on the news and media, I was starting to think there were no good people around any more...... but after a horrible bike accident many miles from home that led to me being discharged from a hospital in a blunt and in humane way without any belongings as they were with my bike which was towed else where I was really stuck. I had to leave at midnight ish In only a hospital gown and a pair of dead guys shoes, as they cut my clothes off at the scene, and as well as that I had a very bashed up leg that I could barely walk on. now I wasn't surprised as most people I've met up til now would rather shrug it off and get you out the door or just leave you too it, rather than help you. I had little money but enough to get me a taxi to nearest hotel I could find within my budget and once I got there this is when my outlook on humanity change. not only did they give me a room I could manage to afford but due to my circumstances they through in breakfast and after hearing my troubled conversation to insurance company and breakdown company about my getting home and looking like a half naked homeless guy, they offered to get me some clothes from a local primark as I couldn't walk far, and said I could stay there as long as I needed til I could find a way of getting 500 miles south back home. there was nothing in it for them but yet they took the time to help me regardless! I would highly recommend this place to any decent folk out there looking to be catered for by lovely kind hearted people!

Aberdeen is a nightmare to park. You can park on the street outside, but must pay up until 8pm. On arrival, the outside looks impressive, however, once you step inside, I do think it looks a little dated and you are in the foyer of a hotel, so there are people coming and going, but not enough to annoy you. On our visit, there were more people having cocktails rather than eating, which concerned me a little, but once the food arrived, I can only say that it was their loss. My Wife and I both thought the food was 5 star, very tasty, extremely well presented and some of the best food we have eaten anywhere in the world. The Waiter was marvellous despite being rushed off his feet. Were it not for the interior decor, this would have been awarded 5 stars. Will definitely go back.

First time ‘out’ in a while, the afternoon tea at Carmelite was worth the wait. The food was lovely, a delightful mix with plenty of savoury treats. Sandwiches, cheese & onion rolls, sausages in bacon and mini quiche, so nice to have a little hot offering. To follow, scones with jam and cream, and a selection of sweet treats. We opted for cocktails in addition to tea, and these were very good indeed. The room was well set up with plenty of space between tables, very Covid-safe. Staff were welcoming and efficient, ensuring guests ‘logged in’ on arrival and sanitised hands. Overall, the service was great with one young man particularly standing out with his friendly chat. Such a lovely experience - we’re return customers this time and we’ll definitely be returning again.

Having not been out very much over the last few months, I thoroughly enjoyed a Festive Afternoon Tea at Carmelite with a friend. The setup is excellent - lots of space between tables to move around without encroaching on anyone else, and as a result of this and the overall cleanliness, it feels very safe. The staff were great. Attentive in ensuring our drinks were topped up, but also aware of the need to be Covid-secure in their dealings with customers, maintaining distance wherever possible. The food was really well presented and tasted great too. We’ll definitely be back for another visit. Thank you all for your hard work & efforts!

Went for the High Tea. Staff welcoming and seated easily. Menus offered along with drinks menu but then they had no draft beer for hubby. Anyway he survived with a bottle which was reasonably enough priced. I had tea as this was included. I feel toast would normally come before the main or at least at same time not half way through. there was also only butter either for the toast or the scone which felt tight. The gammon steak was OK and the pineapple nice as fresh not tinned and cooked nicely. Hubby's scampi was OK. Veg - carrots and broccoli - were well cooked but the chips were weirdly dry?? Even when I put vinegar on. The scones (only plain/one fruit) were nice and served warm but no butter (as used on toast) and a small amout of jam for a big scone - so what could have been nice ended up dry. Cakes there were small pieces of sponge, tart, brownie and tiffin which were likely the best bit of the meal but still just around average. Atmosphere is non-existent but that's not really their fault with all the regulations. Slow to clear and bring the bill despite them being quiet.

Booked afternoon tea for a family baby shower staff friendly when we arrived asked if we wanted drinks while waiting for the mum to be to arrive. I asked for a latte but was told the machine was broken so could only have normal coffee. We ordered 2 portions of garlic bread for kids and 5 afternoon teas. The afternoon tea that was served was embarrassing, sandwiches were made from cheap bread that had started to dry out, the cheese one was inedible a smoked cheese slice between stale bread smothered in flora. The tart with pate looked and tasted as if it had been sitting out for hours. The scone was fine, didn’t eat any of the cakes as they were all Mr Kipling, bakewell tart, and various slices not what you expect when your paying £15 a head for an afternoon tea. The tea was fine but the coffee was luke warm. The garlic bread didn’t arrive until around 20 minutes after all the other food, when we asked we were told they had a new chef !!!!! What arrived was what looked like a sandwich baquette cut in half smothered in butter, it wasn’t eaten as was too ‘spicy’ for the little one. Table wasn’t cleared and overall service wasn’t great. We did complain and got £30 off the bill but still felt £82 was a lot of money for what we got. We all left feeling extremely disappointed that what should have been a special afternoon was such a letdown. Its a shame as i have been to the tipsy afternoon teas a couple of times when they first started years ago and they were very high standard I can hardly believe its the same place. Won’t be back again

Booked for afternoon tea, and it’s the worst afternoon tea I’ve ever had!! First the sandwiches was made with cheap bread with very little filling! The goats cheese and beetroot tart was awful, the scone was nice but it wasn’t fresh cream which was very disappointing, the very dry chocolate muffins weren’t homemade, the mini shortbread filled with artificial cream were not homemade either, the cream in small glasses tasted awful and the coffee was weak and tasteless!! Left most of the food as we were so disgusted! Also it’s dated and needs a good clean, and when we left the girl never spoke or asked if we enjoyed it!!

However, the ladies toilets did not look like they had been cleaned since the night before's parties and the carpet in the bar / restaurant clearly had not seen a hoover that day. A group of about 17 of us booked one of the rooms. We were not greeted by staff at all, and any of our encounters were met like we were an inconvenience without even a smile. When we went to the bar to get our drinks there was no one there. A blonde lady (manager?) cam and told us that both bartenders were helping a customer and should be back soon. When we asked if she worked there she said yes but she can't go behind the bar? The bartenders came back and it was fine. The young bartender was the only friendly employee we encountered. The food wasn't bad, more nibbles then a meal but it was all tasty. The biggest let down was the staff that didn't cater to us at all, if we hadn't gotten service for ourselves we wouldn't have got. As I said, food was okay but the service wasn't.

I have been going to the carmelite for the past 10 years, it has always been a place to count on, for decent food, a nice atmosphere and great helpful staff. Sadly the most recent occasion left us all very disappointed and with a very bad taste in our mouths, the food being the major problem. The staff were all trying their best to make up for the poor quality food we were given, I ordered a sirloin steak and I've never been more disappointed with what I was given, I have had far better quality of meat from lidl at a third of the price. No one was happy with their meals, the "fish" was extremely dubious, however the staff did try their best at all times and were very forgiving. We were there for a birthday meal and had hoped to have a great time, sadly it was just a major disappointment, we left gutted that the evening hadn't went as planned. Sad to say it as it is a lovely place, but we will not be returning til there more positive feedback

No volveré seguro

I went with my mum, nannie and aunt and I was really disappointed with the minimal menu. Me and my mum shared the 6 nibbles for £19 and half of it tasted like it was bunged in the oven. The chicken skewers were 100% from Iceland or Lidl as it was that kind of small chicken thigh chunks. I do recommend the haggis pakora and the breaded cheese (I don’t remember what kind). The rest of the food was definitely cheap and put in the oven. Although the waiter was very friendly and offered us something else for our troubles and was friendly. We then did get our drinks order taken and put our food order in at the same time. We got our drinks at about 9pm which is when we also were given our glass of Prosecco which you get with the set menu. People around us who arrived after us had had their starters and were onto their mains and we still did not have anything. Was here with 3 friends. Service was good and the food was good. We had the goats cheese with salted beetroot which was served on a slate and was tasty. This was followed by Amity Scampi, skinny fries and mushy peas. It was good but not remarkable. Had there been a good in between the "average" and the "very good" I would have gone with that. You can't really mess up scampi. The menu wasn't very adventurous and we didn't have dessert because nothing grabbed out attention.

We've never eaten here but have started popping in for a relaxing drink or two from time to time. It's a really large bar with comfortable seating and decent background music. Sometimes there's a pianist playing which adds to the ambiance. Staff are always really pleasant and they've a very good selection of gins which some staff are quite knowledgeable about.

After being served 15 mins after the rest of the party, I was so disappointed. They should just say they can not cater for vegetarians and vegans. My sandwich had tomato and cumber in bread...that was it. Then packaged bought cakes and a small bowel of pineapple chunks. The crazy thing is my vegetarian friend could have had everything from the normal afternoon tea, apart from some of the savoury items but instead she also just got the packaged cakes and the excuse for a sandwich! Certainly left very hungry. I did enjoy my coffee though...when it eventually arrived.

We had to return 2 cold teapots , it was 3 rd time lucky before we got tea that had been boiled , we were told problems with the boiler but we suggested they use the kettle this time, disappointed as not much apology and we had nearly finished our sandwiches and cakes by the time hot tea arrived . Cakes and scones were lovely but disappointed with cucumber sandwiches we felt cucumber and butter was a poor effort at a sandwich, the ham and onion chutney sandwiches were lovely as were the chicken wraps . Don't plan returning for afternoon tea but it was lovely atmosphere with the piano playing in the background .

I left here just about in tears. After having an operation I decided to book a brunch "stacker" for some family members and my 1 year old to thank them for all their help. Wish I'd stayed at home and made them toast. Arrived at 11am for our table and seen it was at the bar. I assumed it was because it was too early to be put in the nice restaurant but soon after seen people getting sat in there. The highchair for my daughter smelled of sick. We were then given a pot of tea and coffee which were both cold. Replaced them but informed us that the kitchen didn't know we were coming so would have to wait for them to bake bread from scratch.... this was hard to believe as id called the day before to book and this morning to double check . After nearly an hour's wait I asked my family to drink up and I'll take them somewhere nicer as my daughter was getting really restless by this point. The food arrived then so we decided to stay. The cooked breakfast that my mum had was fine but the stacker wasn't great. I don't believe the bread we were waiting on to be cooked was made this morning as it was dry and stale . The granola was also stale and soft and the blt wrap was lacking in bacon. 1 rasher.... I feel so sorry for the waiter we had as he was lovely but this is really really poor organisation and I will never be back. Nearly and hour travel each way and a whole day ruined.

My partners purchased this deal through groupon, I have been before and I was quite impressed as the chateaubriand was lovely, however on this occasion what we got was definately not a chateaubriand and do not appreciate being given a lesser substitute. The FAKE chateaubriand was rubbery and chewy and did not melt in the mouth as it should have. When we questioned the waiter he went back to the kitchen and came back out and told us that it was a chateaubriand style. We told the waiter that we had paid for a chateaubriand and not chateabriand STYLE and we wanted what was advertised and not what was currently on our plate. The waiter then apologised and went back to the kitchen and came back with wait for it exactly the same thing!!. This is a total insult, I do not know how many other people have been deluded by this restaurant but it is a shame as we had previously enjoyed a really nice chateaubriand steak in this restaurant.Perhaps they ran out, but do not insult peoples intelligence and offer a lesser version and think that they will not notice. False advertising at its finest.

I have had many gluten free Afternoon Teas and to be honest none really live up to expectation....until visiting Carmelite! Very impressed with presentation...arrived on slate tray with sandwiches and cakes arranged in a tin lunch type box...how nice! Sandwiches were freshly made with selection of thickly cut ham, cheese with spring onion, and egg. Also in the tin were two cakes...a lovely lemon polenta sponge and a yummy rich choc brownie. At the front of the tin on the slate tray were two lovely fresh cream meringues topped with fruit and two macaroons. Thoroughly enjoyed! Well done Carmelite for making a fab GF Afternoon Tea...10/10!

Partner and I hadn't been here in a long time so when I spotted the Groupon voucher promoting 2 x 2 Course meals for £18 ....well, why not revisit? For starters I ordered the grilled peaches with Parma ham, mozzarella & sun dried tomatoes.I have to admit I'd expected the peaches to be hot and juicy, but sadly not - they were I'd say , just out the fridge ,and cold and hard and appeared to have been just marked by the grill. However, there was a generous amount of Parma ham to make up for the lack of succulent peach , and the rest of the salad was nice.Partner had the pate ,and it was very rich and tasty. For mains I ordered the local Scampi with chips and was not disappointed - it was delish , though could've done with more of the piquant chunky tartare sauce.Partner opted for the burger, and was well impressed. For what we paid it was excellent value for money, though I'm not so sure if I'd have been quite so enamoured of paying full menu price.Service was very attentive and amenable, and there was a friendly buzz about the place.

What a great place for a family birthday afternoon tea.On arrival we were asked if their was any food preferences. We had one vegetarian and one vegan in the party and they made up stands specifically for them. I'd booked the normal afternoon tea as at least half the party couldn't drink but it was no problem to add cocktails etc to the order. The waiter we had was a lovely lad and nothing was too much trouble. The food was varied and delicious. I do a lot of baking and I'm quite often disappointed in scones when I go out but these were a scrummy. The classic afternoon tea =4 savoury sandwiches/wraps1 large scone with Jam & Cream4 cakes/ fine piecesAmple amounts of tea and coffee. We also had fun in the ladies toilets with the trick sink! I'm telling you no more - you'll just have to visit to see for yourself!!

These were homemade, not just a packet of crisps opened, with a good selection of dips.We both had the chicken roast for mains. When it arrived it was a huge plateful! Half a roast chicken on top of roast potatoes, cabbage, carrots, peas, sweetcorn & a homemade Yorkshire pudding. It was tasty but we had to leave a fair bit, it was so large.Service, surroundings, atmosphere, toilets were all good. Good deal & would definitely return.

The food is very good and very well presented. The staff are very nice and welcoming. Only complaint is the price. £17 for scampi and chips is, in my experience, is expensive. £14 for fish and chips is on the high side but don't get me wrong, it is very good food. Definitely worth trying once or eating there every now and again. Really good experience overall.

Wir verbrachten zwei Nächte im dazugehörigen Hotel und haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt und auch das Frühstück sehr genossen.

We went to the Carmelite restaurant on a Saturday night with friends. We were booked for 7.30 and arrived at 7.15. The restaurant was busy (many diners seemed to have Groupon vouchers) and there was also a wedding in the function room. When we ordered, a couple of things were not available. Although the young waitress did her best, the food took a very long time to arrive. It was over an hour between starters and mains and almost as long for 2 sweets. The food was ok but not special enough to make it worth the wait. By the time we got our bill, it was 10.15pm - 3 hours for a 3 course meal is excessive to say the least! There seemed to be no proper system for bringing food and we were served by several different staff. When we told the waiter who brought the bill that we wanted to complain about the poor service he laughed and said "Really?" Eventually a 'manager' appeared to give a less than sincere apology, saying they had been busy because they had a wedding on. When we said that it might have helped to explain this to diners, he did not respond. We suggested that he consider some gesture to compensate us for the terrible service, he refused saying "there was nothing wrong with the food!" Surely a restaurant manager should know that a positive dining experience is about good food AND good service! We certainly won't be back and would recommend that anyone dining at the Carmelite check beforehand if there is a wedding on or you could have a very long wait!

The Carmelite is one of Aberdeen's more modern hotels but lies a bit off the beaten track in a corner of the Merchant Quarter of the city lying between Market Street and Guild St/Union Square. I had seen their adverts for posh afternoon teas in the station quite regularly. The entrance to the restaurant is in a street directly opposite Jurys Inn. The bar area is dark wood, and the restaurant is an odd sort of velvety camp style. The tables are arranged in sort of booths shaped like a waltzer car in striped red velvetine. Tables are plastic topped wood effect. It was a Friday night, but very quiet for Aberdeen, and the place was not that busy- its seemed to be mainly people with offers like our Itison one as most guests produced a bit of paper. The offer was two two course meals for £17. This was from the Spring menu, which you can view on line, and some items carried a supplement.Service wasnt fantastic. He had, yes you guessed it, Cullen Skink. It was OK with small chunks of fish. I had 'Ploughmans scotch egg', which cost an extra £3. I think it was ploughmans because there was a wedge of non descript rubbery cheese and some pickle with it. The egg iself was nice and runny but the coating was fairly tasteless- all presented on a piece of slate with a bit of dressed salad and a drizzle of balsamic. The pie of the day was a seafood mix, which the waiter said was full of chunks of fish and the sauce was made with a stock based on shellfish shells etc. It arrived piping hot. I think the microwave must have had a 'weld' setting as it took some time to cool. The pastry was thin and buttery and there was indeed plenty of fish and a tasty sauce. It was served with mash, which was just mash. The other veg I think was roasted sweet potato. Or it could have been carrot. He had the cajun pork. Im sorry but it didnt stand out. Served with the same veg as above. We decided to have a pudding, which was an add on. I had brownie and ice cream. It was a very small portion. The ice cream was quite nice, but the brownie was nothing special. He had apricot sponge. Mary Berry would not have liked it.With two glasses of red wine and a pint of lager, plus our puds and my egg, the additional bill was £25, so not bad for Aberdeen.I have to say that the place was clean and the ladies loos were nice-old fashioned taps with oblong marbl-ey sinks. The staff were friendly but then noone came and asked how our food was. Price wise I would say its worth a visit as Ive had worse in Aberdeen for more money. Also they sell gluten free lager

Had a meal here on the 9th April & the food was amazing. Service, sorry folks, it's was a bit of a letdown. We ordered a bottle of wine, the waitress had to check with us three times which wine we ordered, then when it was served, she poured my husbands wine first & didn't offer either of us to taste the wine, and thereafter we had to pour our own wine. Not quite what I would expect from a 4* establishment! Decided not to have a dessert but ordered a liqueur coffee, I ordered a Monks Coffee (Benedictine) & my husband ordered an Irish coffee, waiter turned up with a Baileys coffee for me! Fair enough it was replaced quickly but it should've been right first time round. Will definitely go back.

We went for mothers day 'Scrumptious' Afternoon Tea at £20pp and the reviews and the food that was listed on the menu sounded like it was going to be worth the £20 each however what arrived was okay but a little disappointing. There was a lot of variations of food that had been listed- for example there was meant to be a parma ham and asparagus foccacia (which was what I was most looking forward to) but was replaced with a cheese and chutney brown bread square. There was no meringues which there was stated there would be. The biscotti was replaced with a jammy dodger equivalent and the prawn marie open sandwich was some prawn on a miniature oatcake. I had to ask for the trifle shots at the end because they hadnt come with the afternoon tea. However I and another guest were not drinking and they did kindly replace the alcohol with a non-alcoholic cocktail. Some of the food was delicious, the curried chicken wrap (which was meant to be pulled pork) was really nice and the scones were lovely but just quite disappointing all in all for £80 in total.

We had a table booked for 5pm. I had a bit of bother when booking the table and did mean to call to check I had a booking. We arrived about 4.45pm, not actually sure we were booked in but we did get a table. After sitting for about 10 minutes we had to ask for a menu, then again we had to ask if we could order drinks. We ordered drinks and we ordered our food. Food was lovely and we did get asked if everything was okay. The place was really busy and not enough staff. Once we finished out food we were never approached to see if we wanted anything else. We sat for about half an hour and then asked for our bill. 15 minutes later we were still waiting for our bill. I went up to the bar and spoke to someone there who got me the bill. I said earlier in my review the food was good and it was but I am not so sure I would go back as the service was not good. Not enough staff and the staff that were there were too busy clearing tables or building up the jenga again to accomodate more customers when what they should have been doing was seeing to the customers who were already dining. The menu for afternoon tea and the cocktails looked great but I think the restaurant has to employ more staff. We were not the only table that seemed to have a bit of an issue.

Best to give this place a miss (their famous afternoon teas may be better...). Understaffed - one waiter run ragged; one barman who then seemed to take over when the first waiter seemed to disappear. Lip service bland service and equally bland food - I had the posh fish and chips - with added king prawns (2 of, which were cold for some reason), and 3 garlic battered squid (which were the only tasty food on the plate). Fish tasted of nothing. If they claim to be 4*, they really need to up their game. Nice ambiance in the restaurant though and close to the railway station.

The room was welcoming but cold, and had to repeatedly ask for heater to be turned on. When my friend asked the manager about the heater an 1.5 hours into our visit, he raised his hand into her face and said he was busy! The food was generally ok, but when an issue was raised with the nachos, which were served as a soggy cheesy brick, the manager insisted that was the way they were supposed to be as they were homemade, Strangely the replacements were crispier but more like baked tortillas than crisp nachos. The hand cut chips were soggy undercooked wedges. The lamb koftas and burgers were tasty and the sweet potato fries were delicious and crispy. We then decided to order some cocktails. Two of my friends chose the teapot of Jerry's Tea, which was not nice at all., looking and tasting like puréed baby food. We looked at the ingredients and identified that the sparkling perry was missing. Unfortunately, the bartender disagreed, stating the familiar refrain; that was the way it was supposed to be. She refused to add perry and topped it with tonic instead, which did not improve the taste at all.Our visit was lengthy and we spent a considerable amount but we will not be returning in a hurry. The venue was lovely, the waiters were, on the whole, friendly but we had to repeat requests for items, and unfortunately the manager was not a shining beacon of good customer service. As all of us have a huge amount of experience in the hospitality industry, the poor customer service and refusal to recognise and acknowledge genuine issues were irritating and unnecessary...a bad business strategy.
