Lovely place and food unbelievably good. Had the scampi, batter crisp and not soggy, plenty of fish and great portions. Also serve Murphys which in my opinion is ten times better than Guinness. Will be back

Came here for food after visiting the aquarium. The food was delicious, the portions were generous, the staff were friendly and helpful with recommendations for tourist things to do. Will definitely come back here 😁 My partner says the chowder deserves a review on its own, absolutely savage- from a Cork man👍

Soggy starter ciabatta. Fish cake quite dry. Steak very fatty. Chicken stack mash wasnt very creamy and absolutely cover in Tab onions couldn't see what I was eating. No one came to see if we want a dessert. Ate it cause we were hungry. Disappointing birthday meal

Very pleased with our dining experience at Captain Jack's. Have driven past it many times but last night decided to give it a go - a good decision. Menu was good - uncomplicated and each dish easily explained. Service was good, without being rushed - which I like !! When the food arrived both my wife and I were very pleased. She had the stuff chicken wrapped in bacon, while I had the brisket stack. Both meals were well presented and beautifully cooked - with a generous serving. Food was well priced which is a bonus in this day and age. I will DEFINITELY be back !!

I came here after a visit to the aquarium yesterday. I have a baby with a milk allergy and am breastfeeding so I can’t have dairy. I ordered the carrot and lentil soup which came with cream on top. I told the waitress that I had a dairy allergy so needed soup without cream. When she brought it back, it looked like she had just mixed the cream in but I wasn’t sure and thought that surely the waitress wouldn’t do this after me telling her I had an allergy. Sure enough, my baby was up sick all night vomiting and with awful nappies and stomach pain. I work very hard to stay allergen free and it takes weeks to get dairy out of your system so this mishap has set us back weeks. Food allergies should be taken very seriously as they can be very dangerous. Thankfully my baby is still eating but this could have ended up as a hospital visit with a sick baby! I would like to discuss this further with management as I think this a very serious disregard of allergies

I was in a party of 17 at a birthday party last night. My first time in Jacks Bistro. The menu choices were great. And very reasonably priced. The atmosphere was lovely. The food was excellent - a lot of clean plates at the end of the meal! The waitresses were friendly, attentive and efficient. All in all a great dining experience.

Great food as always - service was excellent and cannot recommend Captain Jack's enough. 👍🏻 Had mushrooms and brie to start then a steak sizzler and scampi as mains. Try the Cruzcampo!

What a wee gem to have for a lovely lunch. Couldn't believe the size of the portions, the fish was huge so had to get a doggy bag lol but was best fish and chips I ever had. Chips were to die for too. Lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff. Will definitely be back again.

Brilliant service and the food was very nice indeed. However I don't usually write reviews but wanted to express my view about them charging £1.65 for a small pot of mayonnaise, it was also clearly from a bottle as it looked like it had been squeezed into the pot! I am trying to compute in my head why offer a fantastic service and tasty food then let yourself down with an over charge on a pot of sauce, come on guys, don't be greedy, sauces can't cost you that much!

Lovely place, clean and tidy. Staff friendly but let down by the food. Went by the reviews, people said great vegetarian menu but now they only have 2 options fish or lasagne. I had the fish but it wasn't fresh it tasted watery like it had been defrosted. It was the worse fish I have had in a long time. My partner on the other had had a chicken burger and was totally happy with his.

Superb food and service at extremely reasonably prices. Had the fish and chips with onion rings on the side, absolutely brilliant with great portions. Will be back time and time again without fail. Also fully licenced.

This is our go to for food for a while now, james and Jaqueline go out of their way to attend to their guests! The staff are also very attentive every time we have been, we were in tonight as a table of 18 and it did not disappoint, we brought people tonight for their first time and they will be back, beautiful food and massive portions-the cod mornay is my favourite 😻 kh

Visited this gem in Portaferry having read previous TripAdvisor reviews. Great find. Two young staff who were excellent. Food and service great. Had mussels and prawn starters so tasty followed by cod and prawn mornay and fish and chips which were very tasty. Unfortunately for many people that came after 7 pm couldn't enjoy as this place closes at 7 pm on a Sunday. So check opening hours.

Food rather good. Would have given more stars but meal ended with embarrassing hiatus. All assumed we could pay by card and several did not have cash. Common these days. But the restaurant could not allow the party to pay by card individually, as we wished as a walking group of acquaintances to do. I had to borrow cash to pay. Card payment only allowed for a single full table of customers. Bewildering and off-putting. Would have emailed this privately, because I wish this good restaurant well. But no way of contact on their otherwise easy web other than by phone and they are closed as I write. Will return but will remember to make special preparation!

Had a brilliant meal here, the young girls serving us helped us out getting seated with young kids and the food was brilliant, the chef came out to say hello and let us know about the dolphins down at the ferry, which we then got to see.

Two nights two visits. Great meal both times, friendly prompt service and recognised us from the previous night, doesn’t sound like much but sometimes customers are just that! Shauna was very friendly & it was great to meet & talk to the chef, James. First night monkfish scampi & a venison pie, second night naturally smoked haddock & venison fillet. Unreal value & quality can’t easily to go back

A very busy and popular restaurant, deservedly so. All the food is prepared by Head Chef and owner Jack and it is delicious.

Just had our afternoon meal on our 15th wedding anniversary at Jack's Bistro and had a wonderful time. The warm fireplace, the service and the food was amazing. Big thank you for making our day even more memorable. I had the scampi and my husband the famous fish and chips finishing it all off with pavlova and caramel tarts. From start to finish the whole experience was excellent, nothing is too much trouble, you ask and staff will find a way. Definitely would recommend.

Had a family meal here recently. The restaurant is lovely, very clean and welcoming. Had a stove lit and it was warm and cosy. Staff were all lovely including chef who came to our table to check if everything was to our taste. The food was delicious. Very high quality tasting food. Well presented with good portion sizes. The best restaurant we have been to in a long time. It was exceptional and well worth a visit to!! Thanks to all the staff for a great night there. We will definitely return.

excellent service and food. we had the lunch special of chicken stack and steak sandwich. both were excellent, with no compromise by the chef on quality or quantity, followed by chocolate pear tart - a delicious dessert with being too sweet. a rare find will definitely be back !!

Been to Captain Jack's (both the bistro and takeaway) many times, any time I'm near Portaferry in fact! The food is always fresh, of extremely high quality and portion sizes are of a good size. Much of the fish is caught locally as well. Wait staff are attentive without being interruptive and any changes to dishes are handled with ease. Expect around £17 for a main each, not including drinks for sitting in the bistro. Starters are worth splitting between 2. If you're visiting the takeaway, the Ronnie box gives a good variety of chippy favourites and represents great value. The atmosphere is cosy, without being cramped and sort of kitsch and friendly, really easygoing. Our server couldn't split the bill on last visit but this wasn't an enormous issue. Parking is limited (Portaferry is a small town!) but there is a town square about 2 or 3 min walk with some parking.

We arrived on a miserable wet New Years eve and were greeted warmly and seated immediately. Restaurant is decorated very well and atmosphere was lovely. Menu was great (particularly for the vegetarians in the group). Waiting staff were very attentive. Food was delivered to the table piping hot. Portion sizes were very generous. Did not have one complaint about the food - it was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend the fish and chips, pizza and veg lasagne. Chef came out of kitchen to check if all was good which impressed us - have never had that happen before. You can tell that the staff really take pride in what they do here and care about the whole experience. Also worth noting is that the food is very very reasonably priced for the quality that it is - we were pleasantly surprised when the bill arrived. If you are in Portaferry this is the place to stop - you wont be disapointed!

Enjoyed a meal today at Captain Jack's Portaferry. We were seated right away and the food was served quite quickly. Food was great and the portions are large so you will not be hungry leaving. Staff very attentive and even the Chef came around to every table to ask how the food was. Good value for money also, hope to visit again next time we are in the area. Thanks 👍

Went here yesterday after the aquarium, and the food was UNREAL! The service was brilliant and the chef went above and beyond. Will 100% be back!

Myself, my partner and son came here for a bit of lunch. As usual we ordered a selection of starters. Brie, chilli prawns, mussels, pate & breaded mushrooms. It all arrived quite quick and EVERY SINGLE aspect of every plate was fantastic. I was massively impressed which I think the waitress picked up on and passed on to the chef who came out to chat to us. The only thing I would critique is the fact that I need to get on to a ferry every time I plan to come back. All in all including drink, one dessert and kids lunch for was just over £50. Massive credit to the chef and staff!

I tried the new vegetarian nuggets from captain jacks and I loved them! Being vegetarian it isn't easy to find take out vegetarian options so the wide variety of option they have is amazing.

Cost a fortune! Chippy carryout next door (same firm) gr8! Just had starter as it was so expensive 4 a chippy tea. Ok for special night out!

1000/10 honestly one of the nicest places I've ever had for food. And service was brilliant. I'm gluten free and they couldn't have done anything more to cater for me the chef himself even came out and ask me was everything okay would I like anything more and explained that he could adapt most meals to be gluten free so I will most definitely be returning. Just visiting Portaferry for the day. Googled for a family friendly restaurant. So glad to have found here & that they had space for the 6 of us. The food was great, everyone enjoyed their lunch. I had the seafood risotto totally recommend it (if you can’t pick from the fabulous choice on offer) Lovely place, would definitely visit again.
