Horrible food, cheap interior - either do a proper refurbishment and up tier the food - there is a huge gap in the Queens Park restaurant scene so it's an open target - or close down. Right now its not worthy a visit.

The food here is really nice, and the atmosphere is great - but we live locally and have stopped going here because the food is so outrageously over-priced. I think they charge either £4 or £6 for a slice of tortilla..! and the Bravas are not proper bravas and they are £6 for a small bowl. For what should be a reasonably priced dinner or bit of bar food with a drink, it can easily turn into an £80 bill for two.

Isn't it great when you leave somewhere fully content? This was our first visit to Caldo and despite being lunchtime, the place still had a great atmosphere. We tried the following tapas: Chickpeas, Tabbouleh, Salt Cod, Tortilla, Prawns, Charcuterie and quince and the Stuffed Aubergine and without reservation everything was spot on with the right seasonings, garlic, etc. all washed down with Fino sherry. Staff were lovely and we can't wait to return one evening.

Mi primera vez aquí y yo vivo localmente. No había ingredientes espumoso. El mojito era mucho más sabroso. After reading mixed reviews, I was in two minds about patronising Caldo.Regrettably, I flipped the coin. Now I know why I've never been a gambler. The welcome, cold. The food, neither here nor there. The wine, well the less said about that the better. For a restaurant that likes to project an air of sophistication, the charmlessness of the manager descended the whole experience into parody. Rude, blustery, and devoid of charisma: his mere presence only served to highlight how far this 'restaurant/bar?!' falls short of its lofty aspirations. Free of smiles, free of charm: in fact, he perfectly encapsulates the overall experience. The one saving grace was the attentive and professional lady who served us.It's not that Caldo is terrible - simply forgettable - this particular area of London demands far, far better. Why is it not being delivered?

Even though we hadn't booked a table, we were greeted in a very welcoming manner and seated straight away. Can't rate the waitress enough, we were very well looked after and never felt rushed. We were also politely asked to move tables to accommodate a bigger table (which we were more than happy to do) and we were presented with a cheeky 'thank you' shot - nice touch! Food - my friend and I ordered 4 tapas dishes... tortilla, padron peppers, fish of the day and pork belly. All were cooked very well and good portions - I would say if you're feeling rather hungry, go for 5 dishes. Would highly recommend and will visit again.

Had a selection of 5 of my favourite tapas dishes: padron peppersd, patatas bravas, griddled (and garlicky) prawns, chorizo, and sautéed chicken livers. All piping hot, all authentically flavoursome and all as good as any I have ever eaten in Spain. All accompanied by lovely bread to mop up all those delicious juices and a very pleasant house red of the tempranillo variety. Not inexepensive but the best rarely is.

Maybe a bad day, maybe consistent bad food, but for that meal the prices are high. In 4 dishes, the only acceptable was the chicken livers. "Chorizo in wine" nice quality chorizo with a watery 'sauce'; the cheese board was boring and flavorless with only sliced manchego (not grilled or fried, flavorless); the biggest insult were the meatballs, dry and again flavorless (frozen or cooked days ago) with a canned tomato sauce. The menus were dirty and greasy. I thought about dessert, but 7£(!) for it...Definitely not worth the time and money spent.

They also do really good cocktails - the negroni was one of the best I've had for a while. Caldo is a hearty Spanish sausage and bean soup, but there are a select range of really tasty tapas to be had at this friendly local bar in the heart of buzzy Queens Park. Try the chicken livers in sherry, homemade preserved tuna, artichoke salad, grilled prawns, in fact just about anything on the menu, and you won't be disappointed. There are also trays of exquisite morsels set out on the bar, as you might expect, and more substantial dishes are available; you don't even have to eat Spanish at all. There is a versatile approach to all things, with breakfast and lunch-time menus serving slightly different fare. And it really is a bar too. Plenty of people drop in for one of the distinctive beers, a cocktail or glass of Spanish wine, sitting in, or just outside in the street window, which is open in the summer. The wine list is not too long, but is so well selected, with several bottles seriously recommended by Robert Parker, and at prices which are competitive with the pub (no bottle is much above £30, and most are less). Previously a recommended local French restaurant, Caldo is a reincarnation of Penk's, and the once eponymous owner/chef is still in charge. The service is friendly and quick. The atmosphere is Queens Park.

The food is pretty good but, if you want more than a tiny snack, it adds up to an expensive meal. £7.50 for two tiny lamb chops is ridiculous. The happy hour cocktails are half price, I haven't been later to see what size the full price ones are but the half price ones aren't really generous.Having said that, it's buzzy, busy and quite a chilled place to pass an hour.

The quality of food is really average. We decided to avoid the usual, more obvious tapas choices (chorizo, tortilla) but in the end we had to resort to them as we were left so disappointed and hungry after our first selections. We went for the octopus and were served a portion of minuscule fish bits; the 'homemade preserved tuna' was also a disappointment (honest: it looked and tasted as a common canned tuna fish...). So disapponted that we decided not to go for dessert. And it's not cheap either!

I don’t understand the excellent feedback I am reading below, it may be from people that have never being to Spain or to a proper Spanish restaurant! I am Spanish so going to places like this one make me feel ashamed. Tapas are so small and pricey. To give you an idea 3 small croquets, and I mean small ones, is £6. But why 3 I would ask? We were 2 people sharing a few tapas so 3 croquets seems to me like the wrong number to share, especially when you are paying £6. One extra croquet would have gone a long way!. There is not much on the menu, only about 10-15 tapas, poor quality tapas, all very expensive and very small. The wines are very expensive too, £25-£30, and not even good wines or at least not even one that I could recognise! The place is so small and uncomfortable that you cannot seat down properly without being on the way of someone or being close to the ice machine making lots of noise. So basically if one is going to spend lots of money at least you expect to be seating comfortable and be able to talk to your friends. Don’t waste your money!

I go to Caldo around once a fortnight. The cocktails are excellent, as are the tapas. Service is usually friendly, fast and efficient, although it they're very busy you can wait a while for drinks. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. Highly recommended.

This is my favourite local restaurant by quite a long measure. I liked it when it was Penks but it's much better since its reinvention. The tapas is as good as any I've had in London or in Spain, with a good variety of dishes showing imagination and judgement, not just the standard items. There's always one cask ale on, from Redemption in Tottenham, and it's always on excellent form. I can always be assured of a better pint in here than across the road, but there is also a good range of authentic Spanish sherries to tempt me away; not the old, sweetened stuff your gran used to drink in the 70s but a fino, oloroso, palo cortado and amontillado. Fino seemed to be the usual choice with tapas when I visited Seville and works really well with the intense flavours of tapas. There's also an intensely sweet, viscous Pedro Ximinez, which makes a good dessert wine. The atmosphere is informal and relaxed and I've always found the staff to be friendly, helpful and efficient. We usually start off with serrano ham and padron peppers then have two sets of three or four dishes, which seems about right for two. I've never been disappointed here and will definitely be back.

I went to this restaurant for a friend's birthday lunch. A big group of us with grandparents right down to babes in arms. The preordered food for the little ones took an hour to come. The children were colouring and drawing (with paper and pens we had brought) but apparently their behaviour was stopping other customers from coming in. Our parenting was criticised openly. This is the first and only time I have ever left a restaurant before I have finished a meal - and we eat out with the children a lot. Our whole party left before pudding. It was upsetting but we felt very unwelcome. The manager is bully - be warned, if you try to reason with him about his treatment of you or any of your party, he may well send more than one threatening email to you about your booking afterwards. This is concerning as it is forums such as tripadvisor which allow consumers the right to reply. We shouldn't be bullied into silence.

I recently had a disappointing and upsetting birthday lunch at Caldo. I arranged with the owner/manager well in advance the numbers - 11 adults and 7 children. We agreed that the children should be served fish and chips straight away to avoid them getting hungry and irritable. The opposite happened and the children were not served for an hour - well after the adults. During this time the manager Rod came over and informed me that the children were going to put other customers off coming into the restaurant. The kids were on the couch in the corner with my sister and yes being typical kids and a little noisy but they were hungry! This didn't stop Rod continually tapping me on my shoulder and whispering in a passive aggressive manner that he was not happy! The food was nice but at this point i was very upset and embarrassed that i had brought my friends and family to a restaurant where we suddenly felt very unwelcome. Rod then told my friend that he had children and that they would not have behaved like ours which as a customer I believe to be inappropriate and patronising. Afterwards I found out my sister had brought a birthday cake to the restaurant and the kind waitress had put it aside until after the meal. When my sister asked for it to be brought out she was rudely told by Rod that she should have called ahead before the meal and asked if it was alright to bring a cake to the restaurant. Never encountered this kind of problem before! Needless to say - we left abruptly and will not be returning.

During my order for food, the Waiter had no idea what the "roast of the day" was - she said "steak" then I said that is not a roast so she went off to find out - only to never return to my table! Luckily another waiter appeared and knew the answer. Then when my meal finally arrived (45 mins) she served my main to another customer, only to realise it was mine. And then my starter arrived!!! I've had the same type of service when they were called Penk's - it's a shame because it lets the food down which is quite good. Unfortunately the service continues to be appalling so I shall not return.

This used to be a neighbourhood bistro called Penks, notorious for its unreliability. In its new(ish) form it seems much improved. A tasting platter included chunks of fat porkbelly, fried chicken livers and, big prawns - all tasty and delicious, if a tad oily (Caldo needs better napkins to deal with the inevitably greasy fingers). House red was OK. Service pretty good too. Decor is artfully shabby chic. The bill for three with wine and service came to £70, which seemed reasonable value. Not somewhere to travel a long distance to, but if you're around Queens Park, then worth a visit. My main complaint is that the lighting is absurdly low: take a torch if you want to read the menu., especially towards the back of the restaurant.

As locals we decided to give the place a try and went for lunch expecting a proper spanish tapas. Instead we got microwaved dishes that had to be sent back. When I asked for Patatas Bravas, the message came back from the kitchen that "there are enough spanish themed dishes on the menu so sorry, can't have that". The table in front of us complained of food being cold in the middle of the dish and sent back their food a couple of times. The place is always packed whenever we drive past, so maybe things have changed since the time we went. But those sorts of expriences are always off putting.

Having moved to the area recently this was our second trip to this restaurant, and it certainly won't be our last. The quality of both the food and the service was spectacular, and made the perfect setting for an evening of catching up with friends. The service as attentive without being intrusive, special shout out to Jay for her friendliness and advice about the menu! Dishes were fantastic and varied - a second round of tapas, a fabulous few bottles of red, followed by stunning deserts meant we all left extremely full and merry without breaking the bank. Looking forward to returning and sampling the 'Happy Hour' next! Returning most definitely!

By chance we get to this restaurant with a very casual and friendly decoration. The menu looked like the traditional Tapas one, so my expectations were "one more" ...But later on every dish was simply perfectly done, with great ingredients, and with more creativity than the traditional tapas. For example, this is the first time I see that green salad is totally green -without letuce- And the bill was rather low. Congratulations.

I absolutely love Caldo, which is why I keep on going back (and back and back...) Gorgeous tapas (I especially love the goats cheese fritters drizzled in honey, mushroom croquettas and cuttlefish quenelles with broad beans) - and fabulous cocktails, particularly the French and espresso Martinis (mmm). Great atmosphere too, which works well either with a group of friends or for a more romantic meal. Highly recommended.

We have been to Caldo 5 or 6 times now, and have yet to be disappointed. The place itself is gorgeous, beautiful bar, open front, tables on the pavement and airy front room even in this heatwave. The staff are friendly and the service has always been prompt. And the food! Plate after plate of delicious, inventive, beautifully cooked things to eat. I don't know how they do it but even the toast is out of this world (home made I think). Menu changes often enough to keep us interested too - we will be back.Love it love it love it.

You can almost miss the understated door to the restaurant, but once inside, the place is relaxed and spacious. We went at 12 on a Saturday, and it was not too busy. Decor was simple, stylish and welcoming. The bar offers several options for tapas-sized portions for a decent price.Service was efficient and friendly. We tried the Andalucian salad, chorizo salad, patatas bravas, and a main of cod with chickpeas, broadbeans and shrimp. Everything was tasty and fresh, and was served promptly. I especially enjoyed the cod. They are family friendly, but I can imagine that the ambience at the bar would be great in the evenings as well. Great for brunch, worth a visit if this is local to you.

Caldo’s is an invaluable addition to Queens Park. There is no proper pub in the area but this Spanish-style wine/coffee/tapas bar does the job - and more - just as well. The staff are great, the food is excellent, the wines are well chosen and not expensive, the cocktails are divine – and they have a very reasonably priced "real ale" on a hand-pump. What’s not to like? Whether you want just a cup of coffee or a glass of wine while reading the newspaper, a selection of excellent tapas or salads for lunch or a full—scale three course meal in the evening Caldo’s is the place. We go often and we recommend it highly.

Went to Caldo on Sunday to try out their fresh sea food paella, a new special they are doing on Sundays along with a roast. Wow. Firstly the look of the dish is amazing, bright and colourful. The taste was very pleasing as well. Great selection of drinks to choose from. The person serving me recommended a wine to go with the dish and it matched very well. They have a good selection of cocktails, and also create their own! Great atmosphere, food, and friendly service!

We went yesterday with some friends because we read good reviews. The place looked ok but the food was very bad. I had potatoes with octopus and the potatos were almost green! The octopus was very bad, as well. My friend is allergic to ham and we asked for a vegeterian version of tapas, but still, she had a reaction. So, they didn't take care at all. I would not suggest this place, as there are other nice places in the area.

I live round the area and I visit Caldo very regularly. The food is excellent, the staff are very friendly and it has a beautiful interior. I've spotted the odd celebrity in there recently. It's one of the few restaurants I've been to where the owner is present and very attentive to his guests. I highly recommend it, especially in the summer when the doors open and you sit outside on a comfy couch. Music in there is awesome also, which is a bonus on a friday night after a meal. It means I don't have to find somewhere else to go.

This successor to Penks (owned by the same guy) is very different but highly successful and deservedly so. The restaurant has been opened out so it's no longer a long thin corridor and really benefits from the change. The tapas concept is well worked here with a changing menu and fairly priced dishes. Three of us (including my very picky 14 year old) ate our way through most of the menu and 2 bottles of wine and the bill came to £120.00. We all had plenty to eat (and we have big appetites) and the only dish that didn't quite hit the mark was the octopus. The lamb, chorizo sausage, chicken skewers, tortilla and garlic mushrooms were all excellent and highly recommended. Background music was turned up towards the end of the evening but it was well judged-we were still able to converse quite easily.Service was a bit rushed as it was so busy but they were very pleasant and helpful. We will return (providing we can get a table!)

Had Sunday lunch on 2014-04-27 at 1300. We enjoyed their excellent steak, caldo soup, and the Sunday roast special. All were tasty, well prepared, of good portion, and nicely presented. Staff was friendly, especially to our daughter who regularly visits. Staff was also attentive and professional. Restaurant was quite busy, several women were with small children, but the noise level was reasonable for the situation. Our bill was £36.50. This is a wonderful, small, neighborhood restaurant every community should have. We will return.

Just visited for lunch with the kids and grandma. Thought it might be a bit too "on trend" but actually it's already nice, relaxed vibe with all sorts of clientele. It actually looks and feels like a little Spanish bar you might find in Palma or Tucked away in Barça's back streets. The menu is excellent , a nice selection of Tapas and larger dishes with some of the staples (chorizo in cider, patatas bravas etc.) and some more adventurous options (goats cheese fritters with honey, chicken skewers) Beers and wines are well represented with Budvar, Peroni and Alhambra in bottles, Meantime and Estrella on tap.5 of us had a selection of tapas and pintxos, several drinks and finished with a couple of deserts between us (including an espresso martini), all for just north of £60. Such good value that we had to get the guy to check he hadn't missed anything. So glad we decided to stop here for lunch instead of one of the more well trodden venues in the area (Jacks and Hugo's) are both worth a visit for differing reasons. We'll definitely be back the next time we visit.
