One of my favourite places to pop into when I'm in the city. Yes, I love indie bookshops, but sometimes you just need the selection of a place like this. Beautiful multi-floor layout with everything you need all in one place. The cafe is lovely and the clearance section has some fantastic bargains. Only complaint is I feel there are too many cheap toys on display in the children's book section. I bring my kids so they can nurture their love of reading but the toys can be a bit of a distraction.

I went today to the Cafe W, had planned to sit and write on my laptop and have some of their food. I had purchased a takeaway drink elsewhere and when I walked in and prepared to buy something they immediately kicked me out rudely, yelling at me from across the store for having the drink without giving me a chance to buy anything. I was only in there for one single minute. The bookstore staff have always been kind but the Cafe was an awful experience. I do not recommend if you’re going to study or read, honestly. Unless you don’t bring anything with you at all.

I almost don't want to write this review because I'm selfish and I don't want too many people to discover this café - I want to keep it to myself, that's how much I love it. First of all, it's so refreshing to have an independent café in a bookstore (let alone in the centre of the city!), rather than a chain like Costa or Starbucks. Moreover, the food, the coffee, the atmosphere and the service at Café W is HIGH quality. The coffee they serve is Matthew Algie and it's always made to perfection. The barista's are visibly very well-trained. If you're the kind of person who likes to drink out of a nice coffee or teacup, like me, then you'll like this place too. The price of coffee is more than fair and you even get a significant discount when you present a Waterstone's loyalty card (double espresso: £1.60 = happy times!) The service is fast. I also like the fact that I get a glass of iced water with my espresso without even asking. These touches make all the difference. The selection of teas, coffees, drinks and cakes is vast + varied. Although I've not tried one yet, the sweet things look yummy and home-baked. They have also started to stock hearty fresh salads and sandwiches from Martha's (a healthy, ethical café on St Vincent St), so it seems they're introducing lunch options, rather than limiting to just coffee & cake. It also goes without saying that it's situated in Waterstone's, so that fact that I'm surrounded by beautiful books makes the choice to pop in here for my caffeine fix a no-brainer.
