Recommended by a friend, we booked an early Sunday lunch fro two. Adjacent to/part of a busy and lively pub, the restaurant atmosphere was calm and pleasant. Immaculate service, excellent food, all round a very enjoyable experience.

Si presenta come un cafè / pub ma all’interno ha una saletta elegante e arredata con stile adibita a ristorante dove le specialità di pesce (ostriche e aragoste/granchi) sono il menù principale. Ottima la qualità dei piatti proposti in entrambe le occasioni. Personale gentile e professionale. Visité recientemente para el almuerzo. Había estado unos meses antes y muy feliz, pero esta vez estábamos extremadamente decepcionados. Las ostras no eran comestibles y yo y los invitados las escupimos en conchas. Bistec estaba bueno pero el camarero nos aseguró que un solomillo era un filete. Ciertamente NO. El Cranachan era crema batida con tres frambuesas. No quería quejarme ni avergonzar a los invitados, pero se devolvió más comida de la que se consumió. El camarero no se molestó en preguntar si había algo mal. No volveremos a comer otra vez. Un lugar muy encantador. No sabemos lo que ha pasado. No lo recomendaría

Another great visit to Cafe Royal , ordered oysters and Cullen Skink superb had another 6 oysters. Cafe Royal is a must go to place in Edinburgh . Try to get there early as a very busy bar . You need to book in advance if you want to eat in the restaurant and we’ll worth the visit .

Called in for a beer last Friday evening. Can’t understand why they’re playing relatively loud, annoying music in the background, when everybody’s trying to talk. It’s a pub, not a cocktail bar. We left and went next door.

Went here a couple of times while visiting Edingburgh. The location is great. They have a great selection of Gin's and whiskeys and some good food. We for example had the oysters, and they were really good.

Been here a lot and always a good atmosphere. An extremely large selection of drinks that are reasonably priced. The food is a little on the high side in price but its expected by the look of the restaurant. The quality of the food is excellent though.

Wij aten hier in een prachtige Victoriaanse ambiance. Goede oesters, verrukkelijke coquilles (in een sausje dat iets toevoegt!) en een royale portie lekkere gegrilde Schotse zalm. Enorme portie goede lokale kazen toe. Jongedame bood goede service, haar oudere mannelijke collega straalt vooral uit dat hij hier al eeuwen werkt helaas. Lekker rumoerig, ook door het ‘en suite’ cafe. Al met al een aanrader!

We got a nice table in a corner and had two very nice gentlemen, really trying to give us a perfect evening. Attention, service and a good sense of humour!

They don't get any fresher or better. We had a difficult time finding the cafe due to near-by street construction but it was worth the effort. The oysters were fresh and great.

I had just arrived in Edinburgh and went to the Cafe Royal for dinner with friends. I was very impressed. The food was excellent...everyone thought so, and the atmosphere grand. The dinner was a long experience, so be prepared. The staff, though, was hard working, friendly and attentive. You will enjoy this place.

Beautiful Victoria interior and quality fish dominated menu let down by draughty interior. My scallops were decent and my companion's monkfish curry was good: so they should be for the price, but Edinburgh is very dear generally. Excellent bread. Lavatories a let down.

Lunch with friends on a Sunday. Historical bar ..lovelt inside, stain glass panelling. Food was delicious, seafood especially. Our waiter was great. Is attached to thr main Cafe Royal bar which is buzzy, a great rendezvous place and also serves food.

Have been a regular in the bar for years and it is a very good bar. My wife and I decided to treat ourselves to a meal on Christmas Evein the main restaurant. Night didnt get off to a good start in the bar. Difficult to get served plenty of staff most of them chatting to each other. Managed to get a table in bar which was very dirty.

We visited this restaurant as a party of 15 people and it was a very nice evening overal. The restaurant is decorated in a very unique deisgn and has a nice feel to it. Staff were very friendly and professional. Wine was great, food was amazing. I definitely recommend a visit.

Went here at the suggestion of my hotel receptionist for my first lunch in Edinburgh. What a beautiful place to begin my trip to Scotland! By myself, I sat at the bar. The server was friendly and helped me choose a beer, letting me taste a sample before ordering. The chicken breast sandwich was delicious with freshly sliced meat, ham, cheese, served hot with chips. My sandwich and beer was less than 10 pounds. The only downside was I never could get the wifi to connect.

We actually love this place for its ambiance but our last visit was so poor we'll not be rushing back.

We had dinner here with both average food and so-so service. We were told to take a walk through the bar, as it is apparently something to see. It is so loud that my ears are still sore. The place has fake stained glass windows all around which adds color.

Acogedor, excelente servicio, si viene desde el Noreste o marítimos, ostras, que evita el no apto para nuestra Wellfleet, Doxbury, o incluso las ostras Comparaciã³n pei. El abadejo frito y patatas fritas era fenomenal, como era mi sándwich de salmón con patatas fritas y todo, una sencilla pero deliciosa discontinuas escocesa. Para las bebidas que teníamos en borrador y Innis Gunn, un favorito local.

We didn't eat here, but we did send others eating and it looked delicious. This is primarily a pub and has a great vibe. The selection of gins and whiskys is very impressive and well worth a visit.

When travelling I typically appreciate a little stop in the afternoon where I might grab a snack and a drink and this was the perfect spot to partake!

One of the best pubs in Edinburgh. Amazing traditional decor. Excellant range of beers. Friendly staff. Only downside was the place was so popular half an hour after opening for lunch that it was impossible to eat there. So only had a few Belhaven Blacks. Hopefully eat here on next visit to Edinburgh.

We had lunch here before we went to the rugby. We had oysters and the seafood platter for starters which were presented well and all 6 of us enjoyed them. We had a variety of mains and desserts which were all delicious with good wines recommended by our servers. Can't wait to return here to eat and drink again.

Me visita el Café Royal la mayoría de las veces estoy en Edimburgo y especialmente como después de rugby internacionales en Murrayfield. 7 de nosotros pasamos un par de horas aquí el sábado por la noche: bebimos en magnífico profusamente ale y maltas y disfrutamos del ambiente a tope.

Met our daughters friend for a drink or two and ended up eating in the bar. Good cask selection with seven beers on handpulled plus interesting craft Lager on tap.

Went for dinner with friends visiting from abroad and was impressed by the quality of the food, the good service and the lovely surroundings. We went on a Sunday night and it was quiet, only two other tables. It's a bit of the beaten track and doesn't seem to get much of the tourist trade which is a pity as it deserves to be much busier. My only disappointment was that there is only one veggie option - mushroom risotto - and whilst it was excellent it's a shame to have such a limited choice. My friends had a selection of sea food, fish and meat dishes and were all really impressed with the quality and taste. It is quite pricey but worth it and actually quite good value for money.

Third time this year, food and service is always excellent, would recommend to anyone a little gem in Edinburgh. 5*

Last time I was here, and we have dined here on and off over many years going back well beyond the ages of most of the young staff, I was really disappointed by the food. Not so this time. The food on this occasion during the Edinburgh Festival did great credit to the chef and the kitchen and to the room itself. It has to be the very best decor in Edinburgh with the stunning and historic stained glass windows and the amazing Doulton ceramic tiles pictures - and for that alone it is worth eating here.The Cullen skink was light on haddock but tasted fine while the tomato based fish stew was generous and very enjoyable. My husband's starter of mussels and Arbroath smokie was an unusually fine combination of prime mussels.So, wonderful ambience, pleasant staff and good food this time so we shall return sooner than last time.

Have visited this restaurant space at the end of the Cafe Royal Bar for over 35 years, and often the food was poor. Not so today we had a cracking lunch and good waiters.The decor is priceless Victoriana and features in the movie "Charriots of Fire".We tried the Cullen Skink, soup, mussel starter and Fish Stew mains and thourghly enjoyed them.Enter by the revolving door.

We stumbled on this little gem in the back streets of Edinburgh. The decor and ambience was very welcoming, with ample space and comfortable seats. We shared some steak sandwiches which were delicious and enjoyed sitting and chatting over our drinks. The only reason I haven't given it five stars is because of the waitress who served us who, though efficient, was brusque to the point of coming across as surly.

Arrived for dinner with no reservation and Karen was very sweet with us and found us a table. The setting is wonderful, the food extremely surprising. Cod was smoked and delicious; lamb was tender and the vegetables al dente, not at all overcooked. Both dishes were special. Went back for dinner number 2 and also had great experience although female server (not Karen) wasn't as happy to be there, but all the staff is very good. A treat and worthy of a visit. You can eat the menu in the adjoining bar but it would be a different experience all together. Reservation suggested.

The food is good, they also serve real ale and a good selection of wines.Seating is at a premium, sometimes you have to wait for a table so get there early.

Great pub atmosphere downstairs with good food. We recommend the Cullen Skink, scalloped and excellent Hagis. Pinot Grigio rose to wash it down. A good place for lunch while sightseeing.

We booked a table on Saturday 3rd June for 4 to celebrate my daughters 21st birthday but were left very disappointed by the lack of dairy and gluten free choices. We had been advised that the chef would accommodate our dietary needs but, when push came to shove, the waiter only clarified that most offerings were unsuitable and he had obviously had not asked what the chef could do to maximise our choices, merely that dairy and gluten were in most dishes. To avoid a fuss, we skipped the starters, put up with only two choices of mains (one of which still had some dairy in it) and just two out the party had desserts. What we hoped would have been a special meal, ended in a £140 disappointment. The only reason we stayed so long was that the service was also very slow. Won't go back as there are far more accommodating restaurants in Edinburgh, with better food.

L'endroit est partagé en deux parties, une première qui est le bar à huîtres, que nous avons juste traversé, pour être ensuite installé dans une salle décorée façon brasserie Victorienne.Une grosse trentaine de couverts peuvent y être servis, pas plus.Le service est très sympa, comme souvent dans les pays Anglo saxons, l'équipe de salle comptait une Française, très sympathique et dynamique. Nous avons pris des huîtres et du homard. Parfait, excellent, de bons produits frais, bien présentés, les huîtres bien fraîches et fines, venant de la côte ouest, les homards cuits à la perfection, venant de la côte ouest aussi.Seul petit point noir, les grosses pinces pas du tout préparées, nous avons du batailler. A deux avec du homard chacun, ça passe, mais seul à en manger dans un diner plus formel, c'est un vrai challenge.Pour finir, glaces d'une glacier d’Édimbourg et crème brûlée réussie. Dans une ambiance très brasserie, très décontractée.

We ate here for a brief bite on a Sunday lunchtime, in the "pub" part. Cullen skin was very good - maybe a few more chunks of fish would have taken this to five stars. The scallops and black pudding were very good.The staff were top drawer.

An excellent dinner for four in this impressive Edinburgh institution of a restaurant linked to the Cafe Royal bar. The building and historic decor are very impressive! It was a difficult choice as there is a wide menu of appealing dishes largely centred on seafood. I settled on an excellent mussel starter follows by tasty langoustines and scallops for a main. The Goan fish curry looked great too. The service was attentive.

Found this Pub/restaurant with friends. Top place, bar food is excellent and even better fine dining in the restaurant . An amazing assortment of beers, lagers ect. This place is on my list of places to return. Great for families and friends. Great staff with a perfect atmosphere surrounded by an amazing historic look about the place. A must try place. Can't believe I've trapsed up and down Rose St to be disappointed all these years.

Cafe Royal is a very fine, fin de siecle style bar (first) and restaurant just off Princes Street in Edinburgh. I chose it because it was near to our hotel on a day I knew my family would have done a lot of walking. The food was quite good. I had a selection of hot and cold oysters for a starter that was very good, followed by monkfish in a curry that was pretty good. My choice. My wife and kids all liked their food very much. The problem with the place was that it lacked someone to manage the situation. The one bartender seemed to be charged with pouring drinks, getting plated food to the waiters and in general, being clerk of the works. He was terrific but under enormous strain. The place was full. It was St. Patrick's Day AND it was serving a significant group of diners in advance of a Scotland vs. Italy rugby game the next day. It needed an obvious maitre d' or shift manager to stage manage operations.

Our Spanish waitress was fantastic, very attentive excellent service, food was lovely from start to finish, had the salmon and crab starter followed by a mussel risotto with seabass, delicious, can only recommend the restaurant, I will be back soon

After 18 years living in Edinburgh I had to relocate. For my last lunch in Edinburgh I chose the Cafe Royal as its long been a favourite of mine, I was lucky enough to get a booth and my fish and chips were exceptional. Thanks for all the happy memories, great times, excellent food, service and setting. See you soon I hope.

What a great find whilst up in Edinburgh. This place must be visited if you enjoy good food and great drinks. Please visit it and enjoy Scottish hospitality at its best.

My husband & I decided to have our valentines meal out on the Saturday before valentines as we're both busy on Tuesday eve & we traveled from Somerset (England) to Edinburgh for a long weekend (Friday - Monday) I did a lot of research on places to go / eat & drink prior to our trip, so for Saturday night (date night) I chose cafe royal & booked a table in the restaurant for 8:30pmWe arrived approx 5 minutes early, we'd been looking forward to this meal all day! our table wasn't quite ready, the staff were very courteous & offered us another table but we chose to wait in the bar till our table was ready, we were called through at 8:50.We ordered the pate to start (1 each) & seafood platter to share for main, plus a side order of new potatoes & mixed leaf salad, we were going to order a seafood platter each (£35pp) but we were advised by the waiter that 1 platter plus a couple of sides, starters & desserts would be better, so we took his advise.We were offered some brown or white bread & then shortly after our starters arrived, the pate was amazing! The mustard gives it a bit of a kick, but it was full of flavour, really tasty! My expectations had been met!The seafood platter arrived, along with a few side plates to deal with shells, you get 2 scallops, 2 langoustines, a lobster & about 30 muscles, a finger wash would have been nice as it's quite messy, squeezing the lemon & breaking the shells, instead I popped to the ladies twice to wash my hands.We finished our seafood platter a little after 10pm our plates were cleared & our wine topped up, at this point we commented how amazing the staff were, so attentive without being OTT! But unfortunately it was after this it went a little downhill for us.... from that point on we were pretty much ignored, we weren't offered any more bread throughout the evening, there was another 2 tables still in the restaurant & we were left to drink our bottle of wine whilst the staff chatted amongst themselves & set up for the next day, I really wanted a dessert & a cappuccino but we were pretty much invisible from 10:15pm, perhaps the kitchen was closed, but we should have been asked if we wanted desserts or coffees.At 10:40pm we asked for the bill, we paid & left & we went back to the hotel, where I devoured a bag of mini eggs I'd bought earlier, not quite the dessert I'd had in mind!

Visited on a Sunday evening and were lucky to get a table, service was exemplary. We ordered the taster seafood platter and the steak. The steak and chips were perfect and words cannot describe how good the seafood was you must try it! We tried to return Tuesday lunch time but could not get a table will certainly visit again and ensure we arrive early to get a table

Called in for a family/ birthday lunch and the place was packed (as usual). Always a great atmosphere in the bar with lots of noisy conversation and buzzing with activity. There were three of us and despite how incredibly busy it was, the serving staff were polite, helpful and friendly. All our food choices were very good, but the starter I had of mussels in a gorgeous tangy broth, lightly spiced and served with very good bread - was exceptional. I followed that with bangers and mash (very, very good locally made sausages in a rich red-wine gravy).We were too full for any pudding but had coffee - very good espressos and machiatos, rich but not bitter.This amazing Victorian pub/restaurant is so full of character, it's worth calling in just for a glass of wine to see what it's like!

My wife Debi and I had read some great reviews of the Cafe Royal (which was recommended by my wife's work colleague) prior to our flying visit to Edinburgh so we popped in for lunch there (23rd January). We went to the restaurant and were quickly seen by a very attentive and polite staff member. My wife chose the Pâté starter and I opted for the Haggis Bon Bons, both of which we really enjoyed. For the main, we both went for the Langoustines and scallops, which we both agreed on being absolutely delicious and filling. Would I recommend the Cafe Royal ? Without a doubt or hesitation ! Lovely Oyster bar with a great decor to boot. A must for a return visit next time we are in Edinburgh.

Si mangia soprattutto pesce ma cucinato senza particolare classe. Ed il prezzo è un po' troppo alto rispetto alla qualità delle portate. Il voto va quindi soprattutto ai 150 di storia...

Family dinner after a great day out in the city. Service was attentive and friendly. My sons were offered the bar menu, which they declined but was great to be given the choice. The scallops were delicious, venison beautifully cooked and the lobster devoured. A huge plus is the formality and beautiful decor with the combination of the great, buzzing atmosphere coming over from the bar. A great dining experience. We will definitely be back.

The Café Royal is lovely and old fashioned. Dark wood panels and lots of brass. The staff are extremely competent and are happy to advise you on any dish. I had a plate of 6 Oysters, cooked 3 different ways, 2 Natural, 2 Rockerfella and 2 Kilpatrick for £12. The wine list is good too at reasonable prices. Its a must if your a seafood lover staying in Edinburgh.

If I haven´t paid this fine establishment a visit then I don´t feel that I´ve been in Edinburgh at all. Firstly, the staff..they actually outshine the stunning Victorian decor! They are extremely professional and friendly. They always remember you and go out of their way to make sure you are being well looked after. Barman José is as close as you get to a national treasure! They have an impressive selection of wines and malts. I recommend starting off with the house speciality; 3 oysters and a glass of Veuve Cliquot. Excellent value for money! I tend to order the same dish; Salade Nicoise with salmon. It is delicious; big and hearty. Cafe Royal is one of the few places in Edinburgh where tourists, bankers, and pensioners alike all mix and get along. The atmosphere is always buzzing, yet very civilised. The decor lends itself to a great evevning out.

It is worth going to this place just go see the period features and decor. It is a favourite haunt for my wife and I when we are in Edinburgh and we had lunch here on the last day of the festival. The food was fantastic, great seafood with the usual associated prices. Add on a cold bottle of Sancerre and you have the perfect afternoon! !

As the restaurant seemed quiet we opted to eat in the busy, historic bar for lunch. Very helpful and friendly service from both the barman and waiting staff and the menu is quite a traditional fish based one, but with sandwich snacks available too. Oysters to start were excellent, the fish soup was okay but nothing startling and the fish pasta and mussels were both good. It has a nice vibe and is a good, reasonably priced lunch spot with reliable and decent food.

A traditional scottish resturant with a bar. Not very big, better to make booking. Good seafood especially oyster and crab.

It was a busy night but as my companions were familiar to the manager we were 'squeezed' in. We were not disappointment. The same/usual high quality of seafood perfectly prepared and presented. No need to say more.

Gorgeous setting- perfect place to have a fist meal in Edinburgh. Enjoyed the Victorian stained glass. Recommend the grilled Lobster which I ordered and loved. Also had cabbage and peas, which was excellent. Family member ordered gnocchi which I tried and was also wonderful. Quite pricy, but very good quality.
