We went for brunch this morning as a Saturday treat and were totally disappointed. Two flat whites and two meals off the brunch menu were just over £26, I would not have minded this if the food had lived up to expectation but it didn't. The waitress brought over our coffees which were a bit slow to arrive, the order was supposed to be one regular flat white and one with oat milk but she didn't know if that's what they were, so she had to come back with another one to be sure. Not so bad, it happens. Food arrived later and was not great. The extra bacon we'd ordered for one meal (one measly streaky rasher for £1 more) was on the wrong plate. Scrambled egg was watery, poached egg looked like it had been hard boiled and the asparagus was so overcooked that it was mushy. We should have sent the food back but were hungry and had limited time but we left feeling robbed, if I'm honest.

We popped on for a light lunch after a visit to the adjoining craft centre. A cheese and ham toastie seemed to be a bit pricey at £8.50, but turned out to be good value. We shared it and enjoyed the crusty toasted bread, thick slices of flavoursome ham, covered with a generous portion of cheese. Accompanied by salad, coleslaw and crisps. Coffee was good. Easy parking and a short stroll from Ruthin's quaint town centre.

We are regular Saturday morning customers to Cafe R, and were particularly pleased with the visit this morning. We were greeted on arrival by the manageress, who advised us that because they had a large party of 50 people for breakfast, she had taken the liberty of reserving a table for us so we did not miss out. We had not asked for this, nor were we aware of it until we arrived. This is customer service which one sees very rarely these days and not only was it appreciated, but the manageress is to be commended for it.

On our way back from a walk we decided to go to cafe R. Last time we went they had just reopened and the visit was not a positive experience. This time was different. The roast dinner my husband had was "excellent",my Welsh rarebit lacked taste (maybe it needed stronger cheese, more mustard or beer) but the salad and chutney were back to the usual high standard. The staff were all very good, with smiles and really pleasant. It's really good to be able to take our dog in and best of all the tiffin in Ruthin is the best but there was NO tiffin and that's a big shame. Thank you.

Had lunch here this week . First visit since makeover except for a long winded sit outside last year for Costa drinks which was very disappointing. Things were better this time and the decor is cosier than it was although it seems an extravagant use of council money to refurbish what was perfectly ok. Anyway the Welsh Rarebit was good although a stingy portion for the price! Ham & chips went down well . The passion cake was disappointing… over sweet butter cream.

This little gem of a restaurant is hidden in the Ruthin art complex that boasts regular installations from respected Welsh artists. Come for the galleries....stay for the deliciously inviting Cafe R. Ostensibly a family run coffee shop, complete with homemade cakes and Costa coffee, it's also a restaurant. Serving homemade locally sourced gorgeous food, they have a license as well, so I regularly have a glass of wine with my food. The menu is regularly added to and it's a sunny and welcoming space. But a big part of my loyalty to Cafe R is definitely the staff. The team genuinely seem to enjoy their time at work, and are as quirky as the coffee shop/exclusive restaurant mix. Ruthin is lucky in its choice of upscale cafes and eating choices. There are a few gems. Personally I've found the mix of classy cooked-from-fresh food, sunny high ceilinged restaurant and warm friendly staff irresistible. Ten out of ten.

Since being taken over from a family which ran this cafe/restaurant, the quality of food has gone down. The staff are friendly and attentive and do make an effort to cater to dietary needs. We ordered a super skinny salad, and in fact it was “super skinny” - didn’t have the potatoes or peppers as promised on the menu. The potatoes came later, but the peppers were supposedly cut fine and small, but no sign of any! The vegan special was forgettable. The coffee was very sharp and bitter. Doesn’t matter how many less shots you put in to make coffee, it’s the technique. In this current dairy-free age most restaurants have a range of dairy-free milk, but alas only soy milk. Finally, the lemon cake was dry. We have been regulars here since 2010 and we feel this cafe has lost direction now and needs to up game in terms of food quality if it has to compete with other better restaurants and cafes in the area! 2 stars mainly because they are a friendly bunch and neat.

We called at Ruthin Craft Centre and stopped at Cafe R for lunch on our busy schedule around the AONB. Dad liked the look of Welsh Rarebit as soon as he saw it on the menu. I'm vegan (former vegetarian but developed a dairy allergy) and spotted some items that I knew could be veganised; so I asked the server what was available. I was informed that I could have the tagliatelle with mushrooms and spinach but without the cream sauce. I was also informed about the suitability of the bread, salad and jacket potatoes. Tagliatelle it was then. We also ordered pot of tea for two, there was no dairy free milk substitute, so it meant I had go back to the car for my own mini supply of soya milk. We didn't have to wait too long for the food and it was steaming hot. Dad loved his Welsh rarebit which was served on thick crusty bread with a poached egg, slice of bacon and small salad. The tagliatelle, with spinach and mushrooms was flavoured with tarragon and not too overpowering. It could have done with a little more draining before serving, so a chunk of wholewheat bread but have come in handy, but it was tasty.Accessibility - Overall the cafe is roomy, light, airy and on one level. There is outdoor seating and toilets available. We will call again when next in the area.

However service was nothing but 5 star standard! It was certainly service with a smile, even tho our server Jane was clearly rushed off her feet, we didn't wait for our food and there seemed to be a constant stream of hot, delicious looking food coming from the kitchen. How lovely. Visited Ruthin craft centre today and called in to the cafe with no high expectations. I was amazed. Not only was the food excellent but the roast dinner would be the best I've ever had (sorry mum!). I loved the previous incarnation and wouldn't have believed that it could be bettered by a 'council' offering but it gets my vote. It's very quiet as its reputation has to be rebuilt but I'm going to take that as an opportunity to go as often as I can even though it's an hour and a quarter trip each way.Today's roast was pork; plentiful and served with crackling. There were three roasties and some boiled potatoes, mashed carrot and for greens, some cabbage. There was a goodly helping of cauliflower cheese. Did I mention that it came with sausage stuffing and apple sauce? Lovely!

We had been sorry to learn Café R had closed earlier in the year as it had been a place we had regularly visited on days out when looking for a light meal. Having learned it had reopened, we took the opportunity to visit the gallery and stop at Café R for lunch. As soon as we entered the gallery area, we were struck with how much more alive it was. This was due in part to the children's summer activities, but the new seating outside the café and the open doors between the café and the outside contributed to this. Although we chose to eat inside - the whole atmosphere felt light and airy.I chose the fish pie while my husband had the cheese board. Both offered generous helpings - and my husband could not eat all the food he was presented with. The salads accompanying the cheese were interesting and tasty. We will definitely be back.

Popped in as passing through Ruthin and wanted to check out the 'reopened' Cafe R. Much quieter than a Saturday lunch under previous owners. However food and service very good. The friendly staff are to be commended.

I came here with my youngest daughter a couple of weeks ago and ordered the Ploughmans Platter for myself, the meal was absolutely delicious, it came with a good amount of cheese and a gorgeous salad including apples and beetroot, it was certainly a very colourful platter with superb presentation. My daughter had the childrens macaroni cheese with garlic bread which was thoroughly enjoyed too. Staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in, I will definitely be returning soon.

Called in here a couple of weeks ago just for a coffee after visiting the Gallery and the smell hit me as soon as we walked through the main entrance before we even went into the café. It smelt of burgers which I found to be very unpleasant and the doors to the café were wide open as it was a nice day. The café layout is more or less the same as it was, except for the colourful high chairs which don't fit in with the rest of the room. It wasn't busy only 3 people and that was mid afternoon. I can't say anything about the food as we only had coffees and they were weak not as good as before. I will give it another try when visiting the centre but there are plenty of other coffee places in Ruthin to go to.

Come here all the time with my family since opening, food is so good, would defiantly recommend anything off the specials menu as its all home cooked and made with care. Cakes are just as good and wonderfully presented, and staff are 5 star.

We visited for lunch and the food was excellent. My wife has an egg allergy and the staff could not have been more helpful checking what my wife could have. We all enjoyed a good lunch. My wife said the goats cheese salad with apple and beetroot was one of the best salads she had ever had.

I am shocked by the way this formerly stylish cafe with good food has been ruined by the takeover by the local council. For a crafts centre purporting to champion British design and crafts excellence, offering an aesthetically stimulating and high-quality visitor experience in its galleries, the cafe is now a disgrace. Tacky plastic menus (ugh) and hideous, visually blaring cheap ice-cream ads were the first things that jarred; nasty lurid badly-designed high chairs have been installed, the food took ages to come and when it did it was - I'm sorry - like school dinners (hardly surprising for a council-delivered service). The soup was virtually inedible, had the consistency of wallpaper paste and and didn't taste of anything it was supposed to be made of. And why not get some nice fresh local crusty bread in, instead of tasteless cotton-wool pap (the baguette was inedible and even the brown rolls were rubbery and devoid of taste, obviously cheap frozen stuff)? I bought a better loaf of bread in the Tesco over the road. Everything seemed made with little care and attention, but when I found it it was a council-run service (from the nasty tasteless logo on the napkins, contrasting with the remaining original stylish Cafe R branding) it explained it. The opportunity to offer locally-sourced sustainable delicious and interesting food (Like some of the other places nearby manage to do) has been missed. Tragedy. The prices were high enough to suggest better quality so it was very bad value. And to be honest I would rather pay a premium for really good food and in a setting like this I think most people would. This was quite honestly one of the most disappointing meal experiences I've had for ages. And even sadder that it used to be the place I would come often when visiting the Craft centre, as I have family living locally and it was great for lunch out when staying with them. I was looking forward to it reopening, but am afraid I won't be going there again.Ruthin Craft Centre continues to show distinguished and fascinating high-profile exhibitions by renowned artists and craftspeople. Why on earth spoil it with a cafe that's like a bottom-of the-range school canteen for the many visitors from a global audience who attend these exhibitions? What does this say to them about Wales and the state of British hospitality and food? You've missed a trick somewhere here, Ruthin Craft Centre. All very sad indeed. The very few people eating there at peak Sunday lunch time (it used to be packed) was evidence that its poor reputation has spread. Please take note, RCC. I understand there was a problem filling the new contract for the catering here - but surely better to cut the hours of the cafe and have an independent, motivated high-quality enterprise run it as a positive food destination than maintain a 7-day a week mediocre - or worse - eating experience)?? It reflects so badly on the centre itself and does nothing to promote its role and activities. It feels as if RCC has a death-wish!

Cafe R is now run by Denbigh County Council. On the whole it was not an unpleasant experience. However the quality of food and service are not up to the previous tenents levels. The menu is not as big or varied as before, I ordered the burger which arrived on a wooden cutting board with its attendant side salad and extras. I would have much prefered a plate and not bowed to the trendyism of five years ago. The burger itself was slightly undercooked but of a good size. The acompanying Cappacino and lemon drizzle cake were very nice. Overall not bad put a little overpriced. Friendly staff but a little slow on the service of the entree.

We visited here for lunch. Unfortunately we had to send one choice back. We specifically asked not to have coleslaw on the plate due to allergy but it was missed. However the meal came back seconds later on a clean plate but the same sandwich was returned having touched the coleslaw. If we didn't have the epi-pens with us we would have created more of an issue over it, however we cut off the pieces that had been contaminated and enjoyed the rest of the meal without an allergic reaction. In hind sight I wish I had said something as allergy control is paramount.

Have been a few times since they reopened, and the food has been great every time. The Eggs Benedict is the best I have tasted- even nicer than the Grosvenor in Chester. Will be calling back for more! I've also developed an addiction to the gluten free chocolate and orange cake, so will also have to return for this! Kids meals were plenty and there are some colouring and crafts for them to do in the nearby Craft Centre studios.Keep up the good work.

Really lovely place, called in for lunch with my husband and mum-in-law and we couldn't make up ours minds due to all the choices. I ordered a tuna mayo jacket potato and my husband and mum-in-law both ordered the Caesar salad. It seemed no time at all when our orders arrived. My jacket potato arrived with a nice salad and home-made tasting mayo (make sure your hungry as it was quite large!) my husband and mum-in-law had the Caesar salad and they both commented how delicious it was. Lovely eating area outside. Came across this Cafe' purely by chance so I would recommend Cafe' R should have some sort of signage to advertise. We were on holiday from Dursley and we would definitely make a point of taking our lunch there again when we next visit North Wales.

I heard Cafe R. Craft Centre Ruthin had just reopened so on a visit to Wales I took my 2 teenage granddaughters and my sister in law for lunch. What a really pleasant experience. The food was exemplary and cooked fresh to order. Our meal was served by extremely pleasant staff who all had lovely smiles and were very helpful as my granddaughters are so very fussy. ( I love them to bits ).There is a vary varied menu and the Cafe itself is light and airy with both inside and Alfresco seating.Everywhere is clean and tidy even when really busy. The surrounding area has a craft centre and a gallery for the public to view and learn about the area and how to make different crafts and art.

Arrived for a passing through town quick lunch with two kids, I ordered a jacket potato with tuna and Mayo and it arrived with a lovely fresh salad and coleslaw and both kids had kids menu burger in a sesame bun with wedges and salad. Pleasing atmosphere, very spacious, airy and fresh, some tasty looking cakes for sale, will return. My daughter does work here and this has not been reflected to change my review, it's a cafe that obviously serves fresh food...very good value too with a eat in or outside approach...nice cappuccino and plenty of soft drink choices..

Visited today after hearing it had reopened. I was looking forward as i loved going there before it closed 5months ago. Was hoping it would be serving the same high end quality food it did before but was very disappointed! Menus looked un attractive similar to a side street all day breakfast type cafe (but was all bilingual which was a good thing) inside was your run of the mill sandwiches and jacket potatoes baguettes, panini and salads! No specials or main course type dishes! It also used to be table service but we had to queue to order food which isn't ideal having to leave the children at the table or moving all the troops to the counter and back after getting them all settled at the table. After all this place attracts many mums with kids because of the parking, spacious dining room, pram friendly access and baby changing facilities maybe they should be considering offering table service! Food wasn't half as good as what it used to be! I had a hot ham and cheese baguette (not what id normally order but i was disappointed with the selection) it was soggy and greasy, my friend had the chicken caesar salad which she said wasn't anything to shout about, the kids mac&cheese tasted artificial as if it was from a tin and she didn't even like it (2 years old) We had 2 kids meals and a baguette and a salad, they all came out on separate occasions and before we had cutlery. Lets hope these issues get addressed and they're only teething issues as we mums like going there to meet up

So happy to see this open after the grey few months of it being closed. Wonderful homemade cakes, delicious freshly prepared food, and service with a smile! Came here Sunday and it had a nice outdoor seating area so I sat outside after my bike ride and enjoyed my well deserved coffee and cake.
