This is such a lovely little restaurant. The staff are really friendly and attentive, the food is delicious and very well priced for the quality. My only slight criticism is the wine menu is very limited, however, I had the Portuguese House red which was very nice.

We are lucky enough to live close by cafe No 8 and we’ve eaten here many times over the last few years. Without fail our food has always been delicious. The menus are small but they change the dishes regularly and whenever we go we could always choose from at least 3 of the starters and mains and we know we’d enjoy them all. We usually have the banoffee pie for desert because it’s so good! Prices are very reasonable for the excellent quality of food you get. We’ve recommended Cafe No 8 to many people and always had positive feedback including “the best beef I’ve ever eaten”! We hope to be back many times in the future for more delicious meals.

Had been 2018 since we experienced the pleasure of eating in this little gem of a bistro, so when we were visiting York again we had to return. We were not disappointed, from start to finish we thoroughly enjoyed our return visit. This little bistro packs a punch, found on Gillygate it is not far from the centre of York. Front of house, the co owner and another waitress, were so attentive, friendly and on hand. The cheffing comes from the other co owner and his son, with kitchen support they produce fabulous food both in flavour and presentation. The menu is small but gives adequate choice. My partner opted for the Marmalade and thyme glazed goats cheese and beetroot tart tatin, candied pecans starter while I chose Deep fried black pudding bon-bon, celeriac, apple & fennel remoulade, chorizo jam, both dishes were banging with flavour and presented well. Mains were Herb crusted Yorkshire lamb leg, potato and cauliflower cheese croquette, honey roast parsnip, braised red cabbage, lamb sauce jus, redcurrant and mint jelly and Slow cooked pork belly with Thai curry sauce, teriyaki vegetables, sticky Jasmine rice, peanut chili sauce, crackling. Once again we were not disappointed with our choices, the balance of flavours, combinations and the cooking of the ingredients hit a 5/5. Desserts …… always room for a pudding 😂 my wife had Banoffee pie, maple roast pecans, chocolate sprinkles, which was lovely but my option edged ahead in my opinion on both flavour and presentation, I had Dark Belgian chocolate truttle with orange anise sauce, black sesame ice cream, honey and sesame brittle, omg that ice cream 🤪. Overall I totally recommend a visit but be sure to pre book to guarantee a table ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We booked a table for two on a Saturday night, and later wanted to add another person to our table, as a friend was unexpectedly able to join us. Despite being fully booked, and with a very busy service, Chris kindly squeezed us all in. What a brilliant place. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the service first-rate, and the food excellent. The vegetarian main course was simply superb - interesting, full of flavour, and very nicely presented. So refreshing to have an interesting vegetarian dish that has obviously had a lot of thought put into into its design and preparation. The lamb dish was also excellent. A dessert rhubarb mascarpone meringue with parkin ice cream was a delicious end to the meal. Thank you!

Visited here on Friday evening without a booking. They were able to offer us a table as it was fairly empty and early evening. Menu is a little limited but there is something for most tastes. My boyfriend booked this spot on a whim, when we were looking for places to eat during our visit to York, and we left feeling one hundred percent satisfied. The food, service and atmosphere was so incredibly warming and we would definitely recommend this bistro to anyone who fancies a lovely whack of comfort. We booked in for a Sunday roast and the weather was torrential, so we desperately needed a tasty pick me up. I ordered the lamb and my SO ordered the Guinea fowl, and we demolished every single piece of our meal. There were lashings of gravy and the meat was super tender, but we both agreed that the truffle cauliflower cheese was a winner. Even though we were bursting to capacity, we convinced ourselves we needed dessert and shared a banoffee pie that was practically perfect. The whole meal was definitely overindulgence, but for a rainy Sunday, it really did hit the spot. The friendly man who took our food orders and checked on us was ever so kind, as were all the other members of staff, which added to the relaxed, family-like undertone of the bistro. Considering we only stopped by for a roast, the boyfriend and I both agreed that it was the best food we’d eaten all weekend. Thank you for a lovely lunch!

Easy to book online. I chose this because of previous reviews, for a birthday meal and we weren't disappointed. Staff were welcoming, the room only has around 8 small tables though we were told there is another room out the back (which wasn't open that night). Food was delicious and I loved the potato and cauliflower cheese croquette along with the lamb. There are a choice of I think 4 or 5 starters, 4 or 5 mains and several desserts from what I remember. Lovely place for a special treat. My only suggestion for improvement was that the room was a little chilly - it was very cold outside which didn't help when someone opened the door.

If you want great food in York this is the place to go. We had a fabulous meal for my husbands’s birthday. Starters of salmon and smoked haddock fish cake with caviar for him and beetroot and goats cheese tart tatin for me. Fabulous mains of steak for him and Thai belly pork for me. These words don't do them justice. We shared the 'signature' pudding of rhubarb pavlova - fabulous. The whole meal, atmosphere and service made for a great night! Thank you Cafe No. 8.

This is a great little find - we were welcomed cheerfully and shown to our table at the rear of the property. Service was very friendly and attentive. The menu is small but perfectly formed and I found it difficult to make a final choice as it all looked delicious. The tall one chose the fish cake/salmon tartare and I had the duck/beetroot starter. Both were beautifully presented and tasted great. Our mains were equally delicious - I had trout and the tall one had the steak. The chips alone looked and tasted really moorish. My trout was cooked perfectly and my only gripe is that I could have eaten more. Just a couple of small points - sadly the steak, whilst a beautiful cut of beef, was too well done for the tall one which was a bit of a shame. The second is more personal but I’d wished we’d been sat at the front of the restaurant. I love people watching and noise around me. There were tables available and I know I should have asked to be moved - I’m just too British at times. Would I recommend? Most definitely - delicious food, attentive and warm service and a relaxed ambiance - well worth a visit.

4 of us had Sunday lunch and it was superb. The starters and desserts were exquisite, but the main course stole the show. We had a variation of meat between us, all were cooked to perfection. The vegetables were fresh, expertly prepared and generous. The potatoes, cauliflower cheese and gravy were excellent, and again, were in ample supply. Martin and Co. were warm, helpful and friendly. I felt the price was a fair reflection, given the four of us agreed it was the best roast we've ever had. Thanks, we'll be back.

We visited on the first night of opening after lockdown restrictions eased in May, and did we make a great choice! Superb food start to finish - lamb and beef as our mains were perfectly cooked with good portion sizes and interesting (but not outlandish) ingredient combinations. That's no discredit to our starters and dessert which were equally outstanding.Service was attentive without being overbearing, and it was great that the staff were watching the detail. Our mains took a little longer than the owner thought fair (we hadn't even noticed) and so he came for a friendly chat to apologise and offer a free round of drinks in compensation. That is what I call really good service. As per the title we ate in six restaurants during our stay and this was the stand-out. Highly recommendedm and we will certainly return when next in Yorkshire.

Keep doing what your doing, it’s great !

Visited here a couple of times whilst we were in York, I must say I enjoyed the first visit more that the second, first time we were in the front section of restaurant plenty of spacing, second time we were in the back which I felt was too crowded and it was full, to be honest spoilt the night for me as especially in these times who want to feel comfortable and safe. Can't fault food or service, wife who is a celiac well catered for but as I say it more than just the food and service that makes the dining experience.

A beautiful place with a lot of history. Very friendly and helpful. We had coffee and scones with clotted cream. Was the nicest I've had in many years. Will definitely be coming back here.

Wow, what an amazing place we were slightly sceptical as to what it would be like but it was amazing! Lovely ambience, lovely staff and the food was out of this world. No complaints at all, apart from we wished we had done 3 courses. If you are in York, please go and try this hidden gem. Can’t wait to go back and eat there again. Xxx

If you believe in the "best in class" methodology these guys are working it to the Nth degree. Saturday night dinner for four was one of the most enjoyable meals I've eaten in years. From the relaxed, proper Bistro atmosphere, through the professional but informal service to the lovingly prepared food and solid wines this is an place is an exemplar of how to do something seemingly simple exceptionally well. The concise but well-rounded menu showcases great ingredients prepared with care and respect. The chef has hit that hard to find note of preparing and presenting what sound like straightforward dishes exquisitely but without pretension. Starters of scallops, pate and fishcakes were all delicious and generated table wide plate envy to the point that we all ended up sharing pretty much everything else. Mains of Featherblade, Sea Bass and Steak were equally delicious as were Potato gratins, Chips, new potatoes and all other accompaniments. Dessert choices left us all drooling. The Posset was outstanding and a great cheese board complimented the rest of the menu beautifully. A solid wine selection provided a nice dry champagne and a great Malbec. Service throughout was wonderfully informal but professional, with a genuine " nothing is too much trouble" attitude- one of our party ordered two starters and the pate as a dessert ( it really is that good). The non-drinker in our party found their water carafe discreetly and continually replenished, which was a highly refreshing experience- most places forget. The ambiance and atmosphere made this a pretty perfect evening to enjoy truly great food with friends in a beautifully relaxed environment. Value for money was exceptional: 3 courses for four, a bottle of champagne , two bottles of malbec and coffees came to £240. The kitchen and front of house are run confidently and deservedly so - these guys are exemplary at what they do. We eat out A LOT and it's rare we enjoy it so much.

Whenever we visit York we make sure we get to visit Cafe No8 !! It has to be our fave bistro anywhere !! Firstly we had some confusion regarding our booking which was purely down to us but Martin worked wonders to get us in !! I had the black pudding starter whilst my partner had the seared tuna from the specials board both were Devine !!! For the mains I had the beef feather blade which again cooked to perfection !! My partner she had the sea bass and every time we come here she asks for a portion of samphire and they duly oblige !! For dessert we decided to share the banoffee pie which just tasted amazing and we were even given tips by Martin on how to make our own !!! Overall we’ve been coming here for a considerable period of time now and it never disappoints. We hope they continue to provide quality reasonably priced dishes for years to come as we can’t wait to return

This was excellent, the whole menu. I do wish I had had room for a pud because they looked so good on the menu. The wine was very delicious; I had the Malbec to go with the roast beef. We were seated in the garden room which was utterly charming. Going out for Sunday lunch is so traditional in England, and luckily (ha!) it happened to be raining very heavily outdoors, providing the perfect setting for such indulgence.

You see a lot written these days, with a lot of pictures on instagram, detailing what restaurants are about, what they mean, what they can do for you and how they are part of the community. They claim they are independent, sometimes they are, and that they are local. Many of them are good and worth a visit but long before social media exploded into our lives and we lost the ability to eat without our phones the guys at Cafe No 8 were building a great neighbourhood bistro. Locals knew about it, visitors remembered and returned time and again, you could bump into people who talked about what they had last time they went, it is that kind of place.Local suppliers drop off vegtables, meat and fish, and take-away customers from the previous evening can be seen dropping in just to compliment them on their meals. That's how it should be.This weekend I had a Sunday lunch, the weather had turned, it felt like Yorkshire Pudding season, and it delivered. Beef, cooked perfectly, as it always is in here whatever the dish. It came with puddings you can't make at home, whatever your family and friends tell you, and roasted vegetables, including the best roast beetroot I have ever eaten. Roast potatoes too, nearly casued a fight as we tried to steal each others. The veggie option was a cauliflower cheese on celariac which was inventive, cooked perfectly and so tasty. Seasoning is always spot on, same with cooking, everything is how you want it. Homemade banoffee pie and a rasperry and lemon triffle showed the skill is in the deserts as well, like a proper bistro. The coffee is great too, no pink coffees or drowned in sugar syrups that make it taste like warm milkshake, good coffee. They offer specials and other options on Sundays, dishes similar to their evening menu. The care, skill and effort put into the menu gives you a difficult choice Friday evening or Sunday lunch? Do both!Service was great of course, Socially distanced tables, online pre booking, plenty of hand santisers, clear labelling. It all means you can relax and enjoy your meal. Like the food, these guys put in the effort so you can enjoy yourselves during this unusual time. Front of house service is equal to the food being sent out, you can tell the guys have built this up over the years. How many times have you been seen on the food programmes you watch have you seen a little bistro in Spain, or France, or Anthony Bourdain visiting a place on the corner in New York, then forgotten it as you tried the special in some chain restaurant, the one that looks like every other chain? Don't put yourself through that feeling of slight emptiness as you realise that whilst OK, you want more than OK, you want a place that's been serving great food for over 16 years, you want a place where you see the owners working their socks off to make your meal something to really enjoy. Well go to Cafe No 8 and have a meal as soon as you can.

We used to go here pre-kids, about 10 years ago. It was excellent then and it’s still excellent now. The food was interesting and really well cooked, the atmosphere was lovely and relaxed and the prices are what you’d expect to pay. To cut to the chase, we’d happily eat here regularly and we’d highly recommend it.

This was our first dining welcome and relaxed. There was a bottle of hand sanitizer on each table next to a small vase of flowers and the other diners were spaced out. The service was friendly and efficient. We had salmon & beetroot trifle and pea & mint with celeriac soup for starters. For the mains we had feather blade beef and chicken with potato gratin. Dessert was banoffee plus we drank a selection of Yorkshire beer. Everything was delicious and our plates were empty at the end which is always a good sign. We would highly recommend a meal here.
