We went for the lunchtime set meal which seems to change regularly. 3-5 choices of starters/mains/desserts with a great range! There was at least 1 vegetarian option for each and they were wonderful with additional dietary requirements (I am gluten intolerant). The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The cafe was low key and cheerful with great service!

Highly recommended.Noticed they are now offering breakfast and unusual sounding sandwiches in addition to the usual menu. We will be back! Thanks so much.

Due to Covid, this wonderful little restaurant has had to convert itself to a takeaway/cafe by day, but they still serve up high quality dishes in their reduced seating area. I believe they still provide a la carte menus in the evening. Bistro like food and excellent value for money.

We found this little gem when staying in Edinburgh for a few days. The beef baguettes were a marvellous concoction of ingredients put together with love. It is great value for money and the food was so delicious we went back the following day for exactly the same thing! We didn't try the meals or cakes (we were not in Edinburgh long enough), but they looked as good as the baguettes.

My wife and I spent two nights in Edinburgh 28th / 29th July for my Birthday. We had a great time considering approx 50% of places were still closed, on looking for a place for breakfast we chanced upon a fabulous Cafe/ Restaurant called Cafe Marlayne it was a very chic place, with an extensive menu and very reasonably priced, I had the Egg Royale my wife had the Eggs Benedict, both done to perfection by the eccelent French female Chef, we were served by front of house Ula a lovely friendly and very professional Lady, all safety measures are in practice, so you feel very safe at all times, for people staying at the Travelodge Queen St the Cafe is a 5 minute walk to Thistle St, I promise you it will be worth the visit, my Wife and I returned the next morning had we stayed longer we would have gone everyday! Look forward to going again on visiting Edinburgh again. We wish them the best of luck in these very difficult times.

We were not disappointed and , from the friendly and attentive staff to the delicious lunch and good wines, we thoroughly experienced how the French must feel every time they eat out in France...... very authentic. The daub of beef was exceptional as was the Pastis and the rest of the meal. . . No comida fresca.

We were meeting friends and the venue had to be central Edinburgh near The Balmoral Hotel in Princes Street. It also had to be atmospheric, memorable, warm and suitable for a chat with no loud music. The food also had to be good and the price mid-range. Step forward Café Marlayne at 76 Thistle Street, Edinburgh (EH2 1EN).We’ve used it before. It is small and the restriction was sit down at 6.15pm and out at 8.15pm.That was acceptable. Service was slick, it had to be with the time restriction, and we skipped starters although the moules mariniere and rabbit terrine with gherkin, warm anchovie toast, carrot ketchup and wholegrain mustard were appealing.Four of our party plumped for 6oz, Aberdeen Angus ribeye with grilled portobello mushroom, garlic butter, walnut and watercress salad and horseradish cream. The rack of lamb with celeriac and parmesan puree looked appealing but the whole sea bass could not be overlooked. All mains here are served with potatoes and green beans, a good move, and the meal was appreciated by all. Portions would have been a tad bigger but the quality was there.Delicious sticky toffee pudding was a must to finish and so was the fruit frangipane tart. Great picks. Full of flavour. We were satisfied and had extra dwell time at the table as the party due cancelled.Their loss. Intimate restaurant this but well worth a visit.By the way, they only accept telephone bookings on 0131 226 2230

A stunning evening from start to finish! We had an absolutely delightful server who looked after us with care and charm (Scottish lady.)We were given a taste of two white wines in order to choose one, even though our server thought we were only going to have a glass each. We chose a delicious bottle of Picpoul de Pinet which went fantastically with our fish supper. The Cullen skink was rich and tasty, our cod loin had the most amazing sauce made with Pernod and superb accompaniments. The baked cheesecake was literally 10/10. A marvellous evening, very good value, and all freshly cooked from local ingredients which our server was passionate about. It was our first night in Edinburgh. We arrived late afternoon and was not able to make reservations for our party of 8. After trying to get a table at the more popular restaurants on Thistle street, we were lucky to find separate tables in this charming cozy French restaurant. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. We had the Caesar salad, mussels in white wine cream sauce, rack of lamb, and seabass. We could not help notice the singular lady serving all the tables who was really fast in attending to raised hands, serving the food and welcoming new guests. Her smile never faded.

It was all simply presented but with interesting sauces and accompaniments. The duck with borlotti beans, Cavolo Nero and cherry beer sauce was delicious; the cod fillet with avocado, apple, celery and sultana salad with sourdough crumb was beautiful as was Le Steak which was perfectly cooked. The croquettes de poisson or Thai fish cakes were very moist, almost sloppy, which for me detracted from the dish but others enjoyed it. I went here recently for a family birthday lunch. The £15.90 three course lunch menu was varied and interesting, with the dishes beautifully presented. Between us we had beetroot carpaccio, soup, and Salad Lyonnaise starters, with chicken supreme & chorizo / chickpeas and fish mains, with chocolate & almond torte, and frangipane tart to follow. My only criticisms would be that it's an incredibly small space, so not really suitable for parties of more than four in my opinion. Also, I felt that the wine list wasn't the best value for a restaurant which does a really good value food menu. Minor gripes to be fair, as it was a really nice place to visit, and I would happily recommend it.

Very nice small French restaurant in the centre of Edinburgh. Good choice of food on the menu, not too many dishes. All freshly prepared and well presented. Very reasonable prices too! Would highly recommend!

Great restaurant we found accidentally but gratefully. The service is welcoming from the begining and service good throughout. The starters were delicious and fresh. Fish cakes really tasty and not padded out with potatoes. The salmon was beautifully cooked. Reasonable choice of wines and beers.

Courez-y

Came across this little gem of a restaurant by poor chance. Such a warm welcome on a cold January evening. Our steaks were cooked to absolute perfection & yes they certainly know how to make an Irish coffee. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Ambiente accogliente e discreto. Cibi presentati in modo elegante e molto curati.

Had a wonderful dining in this very cosy and intimate Bistro. The food was outstanding and the lady who served us was attentive but not intrusive. The whole meal was delicious and the steak was one of the nicest Ive had in a long long time - beautifully cooked. The steak was the star of the plate and had some garlic butter at the side which allowed true flavour of the Aberdeen Angus steak to come through. The fruit frangipane tart was so so light - truly scrumptious. Well worth a visit.

Unexpected gem in a busy city, no reservation but welcomed us in just before opening. Genuinely the most amazingly tasty food I’ve ever had. The wine list is small but perfectly formed like the restaurant. Would highly recommended & will call in again for out next visit. Highly attentive & friendly staff 10/10!

Had my best EVER meal here: onion/sherry soup to start, an unbelievably brilliant lamb steak for my main, cooked to absolute perfection, and a blueberry tart accompanied by a brilliantly priced french white wine ... really inexpensive, truly amazing. If this isn’t the best restaurant in Edinburgh then I don’t know what is. Everyone there should be very very proud of themselves.

We had a wonderful night at this bistro. It is slightly compact and we were away from the door thankfully on such a cold night.

Visited on a cold and rainy Tuesday evening for a family dinner. The menu was quite nice - however I would suggest it wouldn’t be a great place for a vegetarian to visit as there was only one vegetarian starter and one vegetarian main (however the menu was small so to this be expected). I really enjoyed my starter and main - salmon with goats cheese and beetroot for my starter and duck breast with kale and beans for my main. The service and ambience were excellent.

What a great find. Happened to be walking past and were lucky enough to get a table. Great menu, four of us all had different choices and each of us thought our food was amazing. Absolutely delicious and friendly warm service too. Will definitely return.

Food as flavoursome as ever. Portions a little on the small side - ok for me, however, if I had visited with my husband, he would have still been hungry. Not the best table either - very near the bar/kitchen and a bit cramped.

We had the mussels, fishcakes and prawns as starter and they were fantastic, as a main my boyfriend ordered the rack of lamb and he loved it and I got the duck. I cannot recommend it enough, it's the best main I've ever tasted.

My wife and I are local however this isn't somewhere we would frequent. Not sure why not. We popped in on Friday on the off chance there might be a free table. There was and we embarked on a lovely gastro experience; superb food a lovely wine and fantastic service. We will be back.....soon!

We had intended to go to another place nearby but found it had closed down, so we wandered around. It was about 2.15 by the time we found this wee gem, and although we saw the chef carrying soup to the fridges they never batted an eyelid and showed us to a table. The food was lovely, well-priced, clearly all hand-made, and the wine list was good too. We definitely intend to go back - and earlier - and hope we aren't the only people there feeling a bit high and dry!

After a long day’s sightseeing around Edinburgh, we were tired and hungry and, thanks to Tripadviser, found we were close to Cafe Marlayne which had excellent reviews and were lucky enough to get a table. I’m normally suspicious of places styled as ‘French Restaurants ‘. It can mean expensive and pretentious. This was definitely not the case at Cafe Marlayne.
