Cafe Ariete in Dumfries & Galloway

What a wonderful little cafe. Had the most incredible homemade biscoff cake bar. I honestly could have done a backflip with delight it was so good and I’ve never done a backflip ever. The coffee is definitely the best in Moffat, potentially the best in the Dumfries and Galloway area. Thanks

Second time we have dived off the motorway to this lovely cafe for breakfast. Great staff, friendly and helpful. Both meaty and veggie breakfast well cooked and delicious 😋 👍

Just wanted a light breakfast of tea and toast. No problem to the staff. Came with extra butter and jam. Nice start to the day.

This was the second time that I’ve been to this cafe and I wasn’t disappointed.Good service from all staff and the food is delicious!I would recommend the home made soup and the toasties.The breakfast is excellent also and all parts of it were very tasty and cooked beautifully.All food is beautifully presented and I think the portion sizes are just right.

We stopped after leaving Edinburgh for breakfast and found this delicious place to eat on the A701 scenic route south

Moffat is just minutes off the M74 and a great place to take a break from the drive. We stopped here for coffee and scones - service was excellent and great menu choices. Highly recommended.

Stopped at the cafe for a breakfast at the start of the journey back to the South. Service and food excellent, the staff couldn’t have been nicer or more accommodating for our children. Just a few mins from the motorway, well worth stopping as you won’t be disappointed.

Just popped in for a quick coffee and cake and was pleasantly surprised with the selection and quality of the cakes. Prompt service.

We visited Moffat as part of our trip to Dumfries and Galloway. A beautiful wee town. We had lunch here and would definitely come back. The staff were friendly and the food was great.

I arrived around 3pm but there was no seating available so returned again an hour later. Just had a coffee at the Cafe Ariete in Moffat, service and coffee was excellent.

Called in most days for ice cream but today had the wee scottish breakfast which was just as good as the ice creams which are excellnt

Just excellent as always! This is our go to stop off when driving to Scotland - five minutes off the motorway, the food is delicious and the staff lovely. Never disappoints. Will keep returning and returning.

Stopped in Moffat for some lunch, glad we did.My partner had the Scottie dog baguette, a hot dog with added haggis.... served with onions, ketchup and mustard.... he said it was fantastic.I had the Brie, bacon and cranberry baguette which was well filled and delicious.We shared a slice of cake, lovely and fresh and tasted great.

We were passing through Moffat on our way to Gretna and as it was midday we decided to stop for lunch. To be honest our first choice was fully booked and we looked on TA and decided to try Cafe Ariete. We’re pleased we stopped here because despite, Covid restrictions, the staff were friendly and very helpful. Our window table was clean and comfortable and our choices from the ‘restricted’ menus proved to be filling and tasty. We both very much enjoyed the sweet potato and coconut soup, and we had this with a half sandwich served with a small side salad and a handful of potato crisps. To finish we had a couple of slices of cake ( Humingbird cake ! and cheesecake ). Tasty!!

Now this is the place to eat in Moffat it is the best place to eat there. Staff was an excellent team, food was great and the price was very good worth every penny . GIVE IT A TRY !!!

My husband and I visited in October and had a lovely lunch. We had booked a table, due to Covid restrictions, and had been given the prime window seat; they also had a manual track and trace system, to make it easier for diners to check in. We hope to visit again, this Sunday, now that Moffat will again be in Tier 1 - hurrah! This little unpretentious cafe is an asset to the town ... and can’t understand why a 6 years old negative review is still headlining the Tripadvisor post which comes up under Google, when there are so many more recent positive reviews. Any way, we have never been disappointed in any visit to Ariete’s over the past few years. The homemade soup is always a great choice, and the range of sandwiches and toasties/paninis is amazing. Enjoy!

Stopped off at this cafe for a coffee on our visit to Moffat. Young welcoming staff and good Italian coffee. Efficient service. Tried to go in for lunch the next day to find it was full. Obviously the word had got round. Well done Ariete.

As soon as you arrive the staff were excellent wearing masks and sanatizing your hands when you arrived.The cafe has a lovely atmosphere beautifully decorated throughout just like being in an Italian Cafe.The soup of the day was delicious and the tuna sandwiches were also delicious the cappacionos were lovely.We will return.

Stopped for lunch here on a very wet day in October. The staff were excellent, thoughtful and polite. During the COVID pandemic they had hand gels, reduced tables and all staff wore face masks so felt very safe. We had lentil soup followed by coffee and cakes and the food was absolutely delicious. Definite 5 star experience in this nice market town.

Nice traditional cafe right in the centre of Moffat. Good quality food used in the breakfast. Friendly service. Highly recommended.

Popped in for light lunch as our hotel booking was for later strict covid rules in place which was good to know ordered the soup and baquette deal , soup was chicken and rice however had plenty veg as well, baquette was BLT again plenty filling with nice tasty side salad and crisps very friendly staff

Called here for a light lunch, despite a reduced menu there was plenty of choice. My husband and I both had the soup and sandwich deal which was very reasonably priced. The soup was homemade and very tasty and the sandwich and baguette we had were lovely. Fresh ground coffee for me and tea for my husband made a filling and tasty lunch. I think we will be going back again and might try the homemade cakes next time. Social distancing was in place and hand sanitiser readily available. Toilet facilities clean and well kept. Would definitely recommend

To say they are offering a reduced menu there was plenty of choice! Good value and delicious soup and sandwich offer. Soup was homemade and tasty served with croutons and the sandwich (or baguette) came with crisps and a salad. The young man who served us was polite, friendly and helpful. We will be going back and sampling the homemade cakes next time!

Looks like a great little café on the high street. Sadly the service wasn't very efficient. After sitting down and being handed a menu I waited 15 minutes to order. Sandwich should have come with crisps, no crisps. Asked if I wanted any dressing, asked for salt, salad dressing plonked down, salt never appeared. Waiting staff were young people who don't seem to have their finger on the pulse. Chees/ham toastie and Malteser cake delicious. Asked to pay the bill, never saw a bill just presented with a card machine. Service is letting this business down sadly.

Good food, good price, sat outside in the sun. Staff helpful, wasn't too busy when we went at 9am on a Sunday

Dropped by after reading reviews whilst in the area.Informed kitchen was now closed for the day at 3pm but able to have drinks, cakes and ice cream.Had drinks and cake. Cakes were fresh and tasted good. Good service and clean establishment.Definitely somewhere to return once back in the area.

Delicious hot tomato soup & 1/2 Brie bacon cranberry toastie. The ice cream is the best in Scotland.

Stopped off on the drive up to the Highland. Really nice cafe, very friendly staff and good food. They have put good measures in place for visitor safety. Has now become our regular stop on our trips north

We popped in here for a quick coffee on our recent holiday in Dumfries & Galloway. We sat outside due to the new regulations. The coffee was excellent, the best of our holiday. It was good to get back to some sense of normality.

Reopened with new Covid rules in place. They have lots of anti-bac gel, lots of space for social distancing, you can eat inside or out and the staff wear face visors. Made us feel welcome and safe. Excellent breakfast - we had a Wee one and 2 traditional which had fabulous haggis with it. The coffee was really good as well.

We visited on our way on a national trip . There were 2 staff on obviously really busy . We only had 45 mins . We sat and waited not a long time I grant you but 2 staff on !! . You know national come usually Fridays and possibly Mondays get more staff . It’s not rocket science I would rather spend money in local coffee shops but! ....

Popped in for breakfast following an Air stay nearby and prior to taking the scenic route home to Edinburgh. The breakfast menu was all tempting including porridge with either honey or syrup; decisions, decisions

Great food allergy information. Two soups - both gluten free and vegetarian (with gluten free bread) and one was dairy free. Pot of tea was served with additional pot of hot water. (Glass) bottle of water was served with iced glass. Lovely staff. Great menu.

We popped in on a cold Wednesday afternoon, really like the quirky red interior , the 2 male staff were very attentive and friendly , I had delicious homemade scotch broth and a haggis and cheese toasty which was also fab , would return if passing on the motorway or in Moffat

Called in here on the way home from our Christmas break in Scotland. We had ham and lentil soup and coffee. The soup was home made and delicious. The prices were very reasonable and the young staff pleasant and efficient. No wonder it was full at lunchtime.

The best tomato soup I’ve ever eaten, in professional friendly surrounding! And the cakes were amazing too!

Lovely little town and handy stop over on route to Glasgow. Sandwiches were well and soup very hearty. Service was fast enough but didn't as much as get a grin from the staff at any point. On leaving we did call thank you but no answer from any of the 3 staff behind the counter. Efficient enough but not the most friendly place in Moffat.

For 30 years we have been stopping at this great little cafe whenever travelling north and back. It’s been run by the same lovely friendly family all those years. It’s simple delicious food and it’s not spacious but it’s consistently excellent food and service. My favourites- big breakfast (as part of a balanced diet) and the best chocolate milkshake you can find. Enjoy!

We ate here for a quick lunch on a Saturday around 12 noon. Upon going inside we couldnt help but notice how noisy it was. However, we sat down as trip advisor ratings were good. Once we sat down we realised how crammed together the seats were and so much so we could clearly hear the person sitting behind us whole conversation...very loudly. I dont know if its the high ceilings or what but the sound is so amplified you can hardly have a conversation and we struggled so it was a case of eat and leave. The food choices was very good though. We had lentil and ham soup and i had a cheese and ham sandwich with mine and mum had a scone. All of it was very tasty. the soup was a bit thick for both our liking but this will be to some peoples liking so we cant complain as it was realy tasty. Ive never seen this before in a cafe but you get a small cup of croutons to put in the soup if you wish. Really nice touch. All in all the food was good but not good enough that i would return because the noise and crammed seating put us off.

Been to this cafe a few times now, when on walking the southern upland way passing through Moffat, the bacon rolls and lots of tea are just what a tired walker needs, they even toast the rolls and fill it full of bacon, wouldn't go anywhere else in Moffat

Great little cafe, lovely home made soup and toastie, hot coffee and great cakes, especially the maltesers slice.

Nice coffee, gingerbread tasted good but looked as if a child had sliced it - 4 slivers?! Left partner to pay and came back looking for him 5minutes later- still standing with cash in his hand while the young girls made coffee and cleaned in front of him.

The soups here are always very tasty and homemade, the choice when we visited was Ham Hock and lentil and leek and potatoe, chose the first and it was very tasty with big pieces of ham in it. The filled rolls are very good as well and filled to bursting with lovely fresh ingredients, got cheese salad and it came with salad garnish as well, lots of cheese and salad was not just boring lettuce and tomatoe only. The cakes also are very good in this cafe but didn't have room for one unfortunately.

We stopped for lunch in Moffat on the way south. We’ve stopped in Moffat a few times in the past but have always been a bit disappointed by the food. This time we took advise from trip advisor and went to Cafe Ariete and it was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was reasonably priced and tasty and the facilities were clean. The only downside is that there is only one bathroom which with three kids meant a bit of queuing.

We stopped off in Moffat on way to the trossachs and we were so pleased we did instead of what we usually do and stop at the service station off the M74 we will not be doing that again! The cafe was busy but got friendly welcome and service was very quick. The soup and sandwich deal was such good value and so tasty. My husband said the double filtered coffee he has was the best and great BLT Sandwich.

Stopped off from motorway and cafe was busy. Staff helped organise me and granchildren onto two adjoining tables and experienced best coffee on my visit to Scotland. I even had to have seconds and ecclefechan tart - awesome!

This cafe in Moffat is the best thing about driving up to Edinburgh - great soup, sandwiches and baked potatoes and wonderful cakes and coffee. Highly recommend.

Arrived without booking a table but we were sat next to each other but on 2 separate tables which was fine. Slow service, but obviously busy. Food was good. Would go back if passing but wouldn’t rush.

Staying in Moffat we had such a good breakfast the first time we called here we went back the following day. Good quality food at a good price and good service especially dealing with allergies. We’ll definitely call in next time we are in the area.

We had lunch today on our way between Edinburgh and Cumbria. Good stop for breakfast or lunch. Its friendly, great Scottish food (haggis in all its guises), full of local people who give an atmosphere of a good local community place. Love it. Its become part of our Edinburgh trips.

Without doubt my favourite coffee shop in Moffat, located in the town centre. Family run, friendly efficient service, not too overpriced. Great selection of coffees and cakes. Cosy and comfortable on a cold winters day! Highly recommended.

We went here for breakfast based on the reviews. I’m not really sure how it manages to get all the 5 star reviews, it was all pretty underwhelming. Definitely had better breakfasts and service elsewhere. Wasn’t bad, just pretty average.

I called in here for an early breakfast and ordered tea, toast and Lorne sausage with a rasher of bacon. The bacon was outstanding. Service was 5 star.

We stopped in Moffat and came across this little gem of a cafe. Between us we had the soup of the day, salads and baked potato. All were generous portions and tasty. Coffee is good quality. We would recommend this restaurant.

It is a little walk from the woollen mill into Moffat where we found this café. They serve a nice cup of tea and the cakes are very tempting, even if you’re supposed to be on a diet. Well worth the walk in.

The perfect little coffee shop with great choice of cakes. All the staff were very helpful, visited during the classic car weekend and it was very busy only had too wait a couple of minutes for a table to be cleaned.

Always plan our journey to Peebles to stop in Moffat for morning coffee which always turns out to have more than coffee.Try the rolls with square sliced sausage and potato scone or haggis.The staff are always very friendly & welcoming.

Stopped for a bite to eat on our way to dumfries, very friendly staff, hubby had brown roll with scrambled egg which he said was one of the best he had tasted i had brown bread blt sandwich served with salad both huge portions and bread was lovely and thick which i prefer

This cafe is very welcoming and offers a wide breakfast menu. The scrambled eggs were excellent and the coffee high quality as they describe. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Its opening at 8am helpful.

5 of us were spending a few days in the area on a Motorcycle tour. Breakfast was so great the first morning, we ate there every morning. Superb coffee and even better staff.

Situated towards one end of the town square, offers a range of filled sandwiches, toasties, cakes and other light bites. Coffee was reasonable and service friendly and quick.

Been coming to Cafe Ariete's for years while visiting family. Fantastic bacon & egg butties and the kids love their milkshakes too. Children usually ask for an ice-cream which always comes with different decoration (Cat, dog, alien, punk etc etc all good fun). Hot chocolates are suitable artery clogging - all in all a great wee place to eat at if passing through Moffat.

Mid morning Brunch here in this vibrant cafe was a wonderful. As a stranger to the town it felt that I had arrived in 'city hall' for it was full and one only had to sit and within the hour you would know of all the local news and 'chat'. Great atmosphere, added to which the choice of dishes from small to full Brunch were good added to which everything was cheerfully managed by helpful and cheery staff. Always learnt that if a venue is full of locals then look no further. Go on indulge yourselves but leave some room for a slice of homemade cake. Enjoy!

There were no free tables when we arrived but we were told wouldn’t be long until a table would be free - within 5 minutes had a table. Service was excellent as was the food. Well worth a visit if passing through Moffat.

Needed a place to meet a friend between Warrington and Wigan and this place came up in searches, so I called to reserve a table.

Popped in here for lunch and found a little gem! (And I don't mean a small lettuce!) The main waitress was superb - acknowledging everyone coming into the cafe so that even though it was busy, you knew you were going to be served soon. Unfortunately, this is a rare talent!! She took the orders and was ably assisted by junior staff who brought the food - which, incidentally, was lovely! I had soup and half a toasted baguette (Bacon, Brie and redcurrant jelly) The soup was hearty homemade mushroom and was truly delicious - as was the baguette. Sister-in-law had a ham baguette. Both served with salad garnish - for which we were offered dressing! We had wonderful coffee and the most delicious lemon drizzle cake - superb. Can't rate highly enough - simple but wonderful food with the best service. Thoroughly recommend.

1 mile east of the M74 on the scenic route to Edinburgh, Moffat is a lovely traditional town for a stop. Cafe Ariete is a traditional cafe with a difference. Their home made soups are delicious and gluten free. They have gluten free bread so the sandwiches and toasties are available to the GF customer. Their jacket potatoes and salads are tasty and filling. Great breakfasts.

Stopped in with mum en route to Glasgow. Lovely little cafe and nice interior. Got a warm welcome from the staff and our lunch was lovely. Would definitely recommend!

We were at Moffat early on a Sunday, and the cafe was bustling. Lots of customers having cooked breakfasts. Service was prompt and friendly. We had a coffee which was good and just needed a small bite so ordered toast with butter + jam. It’s great when places offer small, quick snacks. It was a wee bit chilly when the main door was open but otherwise a good coffee stop and good value.

I have long used Moffat as my preferred location for M74 service stops. It's friendly, it's not a noisy packed service station. It has soul...

A lovely cafe, with great staff. The food was delicious at a great price. I had a roll n sausage with a potato scone and tomato sauce. Amazing. My daughter had cheese n toast, done on a grill, not on a toasty machine, just like you make at home.

I’ve been to this place a few times over the last few years and it is consistently good. Good quality food, good coffee, good prices and nice atmosphere. My go to place for breakfast or lunch in Moffat.

Stopped here for a late lunch (note: kitchen closes at 3pm). Comprehensive menu of family favorites. Three homemade soups on offer (all vegan!) and a big choice of baked potatoes, sandwiches etc. very friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. Our new goto in Moffat when we need to stop!

The service in this little gem of a café is second to none and the home made cakes are something you have to try if you are in the area or passing on the M74 going north or south. Better than stopping at a motorway service area. I usually stop here for a snack or breakfast on the way to Dundee.

Perfect place for a coffee and sandwich. They also offer take out which really helps when your off out walking or fishing.

Travelled south to Wales for a week and when looking for somewhere to take a break from driving Moffat was about half way. Took my 3 children for lunch at the Cafe Ariete and it was a brilliant choice, terrific cafe with friendly staff and outstanding food. My kids liked it that much that when it came to our rest stop on our travel North the next week, this was the only place they wanted to go. Can not recommend it enough.

I called in here with my family while on a short break in the area (staying at the fabulous Moffat Wigwams). We ordered coffees and ice creams for the children and have to say that everything was excellent! We ordered the Ariete flat whites, made from a double espresso, and they were absolutely perfect! The kids were suitably impressed with their delicious vanilla ice creams, decorated with wafers, chocolate sticks and little Italian flags on top! Staff were friendly and I would highly recommend. A great find and we will be back!

A good choice for a stop off whilst on the road. Early in the morning we found quality coffee, efficient and friendly staff, good value and an extensive menu from which to select. I would certainly "refuel" at Cafe Ariete again if passing through Moffat.

There are a number of cafes located around the town square in Moffat. There is little to choose between them - all are a little dated in their decor and have a similar range of (highly cling-filmed) sweet options displayed in their cabinets. But in a part of the world where a good cup of coffee is a very rare thing, if it is coffee you are after, then Ariete could be the best choice for you. The beans are definitely only average but the coffee is well made. There is an extensive if expensive list of white coffee options (my husband chose the Ariete flat white) but few Black options. However I asked for a double shot in the small cups (a triple would have been just the right strength) and it came out with a good crema and was hot which I appreciated. As for the sweet treats we chose, the Ecclefechan tart was something new for me. It was fresh, moist and tasty, essentially a fruit cake in a pastry tart case. The Malteaser slice also surpassed our expectations. The staff were helpful and efficient, with the tables quickly cleared off and the place - though dated - well maintained and cared for. With newspapers to browse, a clean toilet (on the same level - no stairs to negotiate) and free parking in the square outside, there was a lot to be recommend this place for an afternoon break.

Used this cafe twice (well four times if you count return journeys) now, as a lunch stop on the way down south. Can't praise it enough.

We are students and tourists visiting the lovely town of Moffat. One of the staff, who seems to be managing other staff, was just so unpleasant to me when I went up to pay the bill. Not only her facial expression, but also, instead of looking for a bill, she kept asking me what we had (I was paying for the table) and when I tried to pay with my card, she almost took the machine forcefully from me as I tried to insert the card, and released it after checking my card saying "fine". I don't know what we did to deserve this sort of treatment. The cafe has pretty good reviews here. Other staff were very nice and kind to us. I appreciate it if someone from the cafe can contact me to apologise and explain what was going on.

The hot chocolate was not bad, and the sandwiches were pretty average. The decorations and service were pretty decent though the soup was excessively salty.
