Cafe 55 Bistro in Coleraine

We walked from Whiterocks to Portrush with our dog on a windy day. Being hungry and thirsty and we were disappointed that the dog friendly area of 55 North was closed. On speaking with Colin (the owner) we were beyond delighted when he offered to open the area just for us. The food was delicious and most welcome as were the drinks. Colin and his staff were very helpful and courteous. All in all, a really pleasant experience in lovely surroundings. Thank you Colin, we will be back on a calmer day!

Excellent food and service, stunning views, great staff

Average meal. Service could have been better. I think the staff were new and very young. They need some training. Quiet day and not much of an atmosphere but the views were stunning. Have eaten here before and was looking forward to another meal but I wasn't overly impressed this time.

Great food and a really nice restaurant

Lovely location with fabulous sea views and friendly staff. Unfortunately not as impressed with the food. Chips were delicious but both the chicken and beef in the Tower burger were very very dry even with the peppercorn sauce on the side. My partner got the bang bang chicken and whilst juicey and having good flavours the portion size was very small for the price and the salad was a standard lettuce and onion salad rather than Asian style as described.

Stopped in for a quick bite to eat and opted for the Seafood Chowder 😋 kudos to.the young lady that served us today in the Black Hoodie that said 'Have a nice day'. She is an asset to your business!

Feels run down. Should be an excellent restaurant with a view to kill for. Shame, it could be the restaurant of choice.

Was in on Saturday 23rd food good but service was awful

Food was average but very reasonable so no complaints here. Service was terrible (but not the fault of the staff). We went into the restaurant at 12:45, got a main course for two from the set lunchtime sunday menu, then waited an hour and a half to get a desert but not sure when that would have came, if ever as we left the restaurant and cancelled the desert when paying. We paid for our main course at 2:45, 2 hours later. Nowhere near enough staff on. They were all running about like headless chickens looking very stressed. I really felt for the poor staff as they were getting brunt of the complaints. This is simply very poor management in my opinion. I wont be back.

This is a hidden gem for sure. We went on a winter morning and had the whole place to ourselves with beautiful views over the sea. The coffee was perfect, I wanted another one straight away! When the breakfasts came we were so amazed, really decent portions, high quality ingredients and overall delicious. 10/10 would recommend! So affordable too!

Just wanted to say a huge thanks to Morgan and the rest of the team in 55 Degrees North who looked after us so well on New Year's Day for dinner . Despite being run off their feet for much of the day, nothing was too much trouble for the staff, even triple checking that the Mocktail we had ordered for our 10 year old was in fact a Mocktail and not a Cocktail!!! From the initial hearty greeting we received on arrival to settling to the bill at the end of the evening, everything was first class, and I would have no hesitation in recommending 55 Degrees North to other prospective diners. Morgan and the rest of the staff are a credit to the business- going the extra mile to deliver amazing customer service. Thanks again to all the staff and I wish you all a very Happy and prosperous 2024.

We visited here after a bracing walk along Whiterocks Beach and it was such a perfect little stop. Fantastic views, lovely service from the young man and the chef did a great job on lunch. Goujons for me and a club sandwich for the husband. For lunch time, those with smaller appetites might like to share a meal as they are extremely generous with portions! Everything very clean (including toilets).

I’m absolutely disgusted with this restaurant, the service and the disrespect we received. After heading out for my mum and granddads birthday, we were appalled. We had brought our own cake with us to celebrate after our dinner, to our horror, while eating out dinner another table was served our cake that was baked and brought by our 17 year old daughter who had put great effort into it. She was in tears in the car home. When we asked for our coffee and cake after dinner, staff rolled their eyes at us after loosing our cake. We were given very little compensation ( a few coffees for free) whereas I believe for loosing our cake and ruining our birthday dinner, we should have received more. We were then rushed out of the restaurant at 9.30. They completely ruined our birthday dinner and left our entire family very upset. We will not be returning and i recommend you do the same.

Food was good enough and came from the kitchen in good time... Staff wasn't interested in the comings and goings of the business and one was on the verge of rude.. That was at opening time... I wouldn't liked to cross her at 6pm... Few people saying the coffee wasn't hot . Mine wasn't hot but I didn't dare complain

Would not recommend and would never return. For my main course, (salted chilli chicken). the dish was saturated in a sweet chilli sauce. Could not taste the salted chicken or the fresh chilli as the dish was so overpowering with a sweet chilli sauce. Had to transfer the dinner from the dinner bowl to the underplate to reduce the sauce content on the food. Was not even going to tell the staff member who was taking the plates away until my husband presuaded me to say something. I did and minutes later a manager came out and unbelievably had a go at me after he asked and my dinner experience and I explained to him again about the meal. He commented that I told a 16 year old to go into the chef to tell him that the dinner was disgusting. While I explained the issue with the dinner and did comment that the dinner was disgusting, at no point did I tell anybody to tell the chef that the dinner was disgusting. Neither did I know that the staff member was a 16 year old. My husband stated the same and also said it was the company's choice who they employed and this was nothing got to do with the quality of the meal. The manager walked off and when I looked around the restaurant, i could see that other customers were looking over. I found the hostile experience with the manager very humiliating and embarrassing and it ruined our night out as we had never an encounter with a manager like this before. Would never go back again or recommend to anyone!

Food was amazing except the pavlova as it was all cream and very little base, service was reasonable due tò the young lads not keeping an eye on their tables as it was hard to get their attention.. won't stop me going back..

Food excellent. Service appalling! All the extremely polite young lads were courteous and very plrasant but all were flying around like headless chickens. They didn't seem to have they're own allocated tables. We'd about 5 difference waiters. It looked like, if they passed a table they just picked up dirty dishes and collected meals from the kitchen for any table when ready. We got our bill without asking for it just after our main course and some of us wanted a sweet!! All of us got our sweets except one who waited 10 mins for theirs!! This was my cousins birthday and not good. The food and the views excellent but oh dear unfortunately, the staff need desperate training and supervision. You will loose trade if you don't get staff properly trained. It's not the boys fault it's the fault of the managers.

Eaten in the main restaurant several times, always good food but the cafe below it is overpriced, awful quality and zero atmosphere. Staff made us feel like they didn't want us there from the second we walked in.

Sorry to put a poor review on in the current economic climate. Hadn't been in a few years, so we decided to give it another try. In a nutshell, it's overpriced and mediocre. Food is lukewarm, greasy, too salty but yet bland. Wine is nasty, music no better. The best part of the meal remains the view.

The food was delicious. The staff and atmosphere were lovely. The view we had was fantastic, the only negative thing I would have to say is that my son has autism and is very particular about what goes on his plate and we said several times no garnish and guess what, it came with garnish, he was in a forgiving mood so no harm done but it could just as easy have gone the other way!!

Dropped in for a bite to eat at Sunday lunchtime. No sign of food half an hour after placing our order. I think this is, in part, because the restaurant is staffed entirely by primary school children, who, when asked any questions about the order just seemed to go all shy then disappear. Some of the food was alright but I just had the worst seafood chowder I have ever tasted. Nice big chunks of fish but overcooked and which you couldn't taste anyway because of the kilo of cheese in the sauce. Also some unidentifiable ingredient that may or may not have been potato. Cheese in a seafood chowder, absolutely criminal.

It started to rain and 55 North was the only place open at 10.30 am. A group of us went in for tea and scones. Very pleasant atmosphere. Service excellent. Would highly recommend it.

Stopped for breakfast after a morning out on the bike. Food was lovely, great to sit and overlook the sea.

A great experience with amazing views of the Bay. The food was good, and service and ambience excellent.

We had excellent coffee and muffins then went back again for breakfast. Sat outside in dog friendly area the young guy that served us was very attentive even put on heater which was very effective.

It is what it is, an everyday spinoff from the splendid restaurant upstairs but definitely on a cafe level. I had the Chinese Chicken Curry which was lovely and my wife had the 55 Hamburger. Both meals were lovely but were too much. I felt guilty at not being able to finish mine and my wife was the same about her burger which came with chips and pepper sauce. The view is great looking across at The Skerries. The birds can be a bit of a nuisance but you're not allowed to feed them so do so at your own peril.

Terrible food. Spot has amazing potential that is totally wasted. We ate in Bistro, its dirty.

I didn’t like the restaurant only thing is view is great but tables were dirty and food wasn’t even tasteful. Toilets were very good and clean. Burger wasn’t good chips had too much oil and pizza was very dry.Salad didn’t have any tomato but full of onion pepper. Not recommended sorry.

We are regular customers here. Typically everything is spot on. We entered the restaurant and what felt like a pub environment, we couldn't hear anyone sitting next to us and all the tables surrounding us were struggling to hear eachothwr because of one large loud table. They had clearly finished their food and were continuing to order drinks and be excessively loud. I'm not a karen or a spoil sport but it was not nice, I did not enjoy my meal with my family and it will put us off coming back in the future.

Lovely setting with a beautiful vista. Breakfast was good and prices very reasonable. Staff very helpful and nice. Will be back.

Stopped for lunch with a friend, ordered at counter and paid via card. Soft drinks cam to table within minutes, after catching up for circa 45-mins we started to wonder what had happened to our food. I raised this with the restaurant staff who first of all asked me had I paid, I was able to confirm this as the money clearly had been taken out of my bank account. I was then told that the kitchen staff had sent the food out and was I sure I had not received it !!!!!!!! Very disappointing experience, the order was eventually served.

Busy, family-friendly (loud), high-capacity, quick turnaround, average restaurant, with spectacular ocean view.... Ugh. Food quality and flavor was below my expectation. Wine selection was above average.

Waiter took us to our table.,cleaned and set the table, then waited for the waiter to come and take our order and waited and waited for 20 minutes. Eventually we got a waiters attention, then he told us it was self service and we had to order at the counter. No signs anywhere to say so. Very bad. So beware of this.

Awful dining experience in 55North; we (x2 adults, x2 kids) popped in for lunch on Friday lunchtime. It soon became apparent why the restaurant wasn't super busy despite having amazing view of the coastline. The service was in disarray, people openly complaining about the slow service, despite not being overly busy, we witnessed several tables not get served so they left. We stuck it out as the kids were hungry. We ordered a few different items including pizza / onion rings / goujons / chips. The kids didn't eat their pizza as it was simply awful, the onion rings were completely inedible, garlic mayo so strong it was inedible, awful salad with chips. The floor of the restaurant was so dirty. We spoke to staff about the quality of the food and service but all they did was shrug their shoulders. One of the worst dining experiences in Ireland! 2 stars only for atmosphere due to the fantastic view. Avoid this place at all costs.

Shambolic. Both service and food were third rate. Handed 2 menus on way in and told to take any seat. Many tables unavailable as dirty plates still on them - this was the case 30 mins later. 2 parties of 4 left before their food arrived as they had waited far too long - wish I’d done the same. My food was poor, chicken cold and had to send it back. There were plenty of staff but they just didn’t seem to be bothered. Brought this to the attention of a senior staff member and they laughed it off! Do yourself a favour and give this restaurant a miss! It was once a good place to go.

A facade. This establishment pretends as if it's a luxury restaurant with it's "modern" exterior but in reality it is impossibly tacky inside. The food although, in large portions underwhelms in every other possible sense. I had the tower burger, which featured a slab of the world's most depressing grilled chicken alongside a beef patty so thin you wouldn't be surprised if it was from burger king. Which is then topped with onion "rings" which completely overpowered any flavour that might have been present in the extremely bland food. The portions were so generous they included a complimentary hair. Delicious. The staff are mainly made up of teenagers and were alright. The view was pleasant

The food was pretty good despite terrible presentation (seafood thermidore) but the service was awful. Wrong drinks order and had to ask twice for spoons. The young people that work there don't seem to know what they're doing and have zero customer service skills. Also staff microwaving food in full visibility of the eating area which is dire.

Myself husband had 50/50 and our friend had chicken gousions and her husband had a burger .. After 15 mins or so our meal came out ... Then the FAN RIGHT ABOVE OUR TABLE WAS PUT ON FULL..BLAST We asked ((!first waitress could it be turned off or down ))) That the food we had just been given on (( COLD PLATES )) Was cooling faster than we could eat it .. We asked the second waitress ..we have already asked our food is going COLD faster than we can eat it ((( PLEASE TURN OFF THAT FAN )) FAN WAS LEFT ON ...We did try to eat FASTER ...BUT ITS A LARGE BIT OF STEAK AND CHICKEN ... We got the 3rd waitress DOMINIKA ...WHO offered free deserts or free drinks ... I told her about the fan (( AS SOON AS OUR THEN HOT DINNER CAME OUT BUT THEY FAILED TO DO ANYTHING... After we had enough of trying to eat (( the NOW COLD FOOD ...AND THE WAITING STAFF TOO BUSY RUNNING AROUND ..WE ASKED FOR A REDUCED BILL ... I DID HOW EVER MAKE A COMPLAINT TO STEVE THE MANAGER AFRER PUTTING ON FACEBOOK... AFTER MANY EMAILS AND ASKING WHY NO REPLY TO EMAIL ... NOTHING MORE THAN A SORRY AND HE WAS GLAD WE CHOSE 55 NORTH FOR OUR EATING EXPERIENCE ... THE LADYS TOILETS WERE DIRTY AND DISNT JUST NEED CLEANING NEEDED FUMIGATION ... I WILL NEVER SET MY FOOT IN HERE AGAIN NOT A CHANCE ...PAING £65.00 FOR FOUR COLD MEALS NO THANKS I WOULD RATHER SIT ON THE BEACH IN THE RAIN ....DONT

For the price I expected more. The chicken was dry and tough. The Chinese curry was more like an Indian Madras. The 55 Burger could have been used as a door stop It was that dry, hard and tastless. The dining area was also noisy. A letdown of a dining experience, that I and my family will avoid next time in the Port.

Good Sunday dinner only booked 1hr before going on busy Sunday

Can't take a group of 4 for half an hour even though there are empty tables at the windows. What a joke.

Party of 8 with reservations. Nice table. Went downhill from there. 5 meals finally served after long wait. After asking 2 times where the other 3 meals were and 22 minutes after others had been served, we finally git our meals. One was a kuds pizza and chips, one a starter of 2 egg rolls, so nothing tgat should have caused a 22 minute delay. NO APOLOGIES or comment at all from servers. All the servers had frowns on their faces. None of our food was worth raving about. Our local friends said this is the last time they will eat there. Good for tourists I guess.

This review is just to correct others, the restaurant is not dog friendly. You cannot eat here with a dog, we had our reservation cancelled.

Lovely location and friendlystaff. The bang bang chicken and oriental salad was very disappointing. The chicken was tasty but the salad was basically ice lettuce and peppers. The sandwiches and chips / burgers and chips meals were much better.

What has happened to 55? It's really gone downhill. Visited on Thursday afternoon (3.8.23). Downstairs was so untidy, service poor, scones and cinnamon bun handed to us on a paper plate! Coffee in paper cups. We sat outside, not many customers were there. The bottom fell out of my paper cup and spilt my coffee everywhere. Luckily my kids were at the other end of the table but my huaband got the coffee on him. We asked for a replacement but waitress never brought. The same waitress asked us to open the door for her because she had her hands full of plates. We did that twice! We have loved this place over the years but the last few times we have been so disappointed.

Got roast beef dinner on 2 Sunday's meat was so tuf couldn't eat it every thing else was good

Called into main building at 1pm to be told it was closed, asked when opening again as sign on door said open to behold about 4pm... Left and went down the slope to the beach and the cafe/ bistro was open. Food portions excellent and delicious. Service lacking as had to find menus and how to order. Beautiful views of the harbour

Went for breakfast ordered and didn't wait long for food to come. Ordered big breakfast and potato bread stack. Big breakfast was missing soda and potato bread, which came out when halfway through eating and was dumped on the plate. Young staff asked if food was OK when it had only been set down 2 minutes from another server. I was finished before my partner and young server came and asked if I had finished with anything and took my plate away. Got very busy when we were in and it seemed to take a long time for the line to go down. Not the cheapest place for breakfast and won't be in a hurry to go back again was over priced. Tea served in takeaway cups and paying sit in prices.

Cracker location with lovely food. A panoramic view like no other.

Really wasn’t a good time. Really disappointed. For a start they forgot the side of garlic fries has to go and chase after them then when eating the seafood chowder there was a long dark hair buried deep inside. They bought out a new one but by that stage everyone had finished eating and had lost appetite. Wouldn’t recommend. No apology or offer for refund.

Good service, good food, tidy staff, reasonable price, panoramic view of bay.

Food and atmosphere here were brilliant, the service could've been a bit more frequent though, we were there for a stag dinner and people didn't come to our table for ages to clear up plates or ask if we wanted more drinks. Really good spot and once the service improves slightly it's definitely one of the, if not the top food place in Portrush as my meal was fantastic, the prawns for starter and chicken stack for main, along with plenty of options for drinks and also gluten free.

Very Very Disappointed with this place. Would not recommend here at all for food or foe seevice - Was there at 4pm on Thursday 20th July - one of the busiest Holiday Periods in Portrush - Sun was Shinning ' Loads of People Around - All Hungry - There was Four of Us No Food Available !!!! Other People wanted Food too - No Food Available - WineGlass had Lipstick on it - Guinness was served in plastic glass - DREADFUL - Attitude of Staff was Disrespectful - Will Definately Never Be Back Again.

Very disappointed that we didn't even get 2 eat here, even though online & outside said that it was open. Went all the way here 2 eat from Ballymena 4 my birthday & the staff told us they were closed for food. Holiday season & couldn't get food @ 4pm??? Whilst talking 2 others that were told the same thing, the restaurant turned away at least 6 other families. Dear knows how many were turned away after that.... I've been here previously during the day & got meals, so can't understand why they weren't serving food during the busiest time of the year?????? A notice on the door said that they served breakfast, lunch & dinner. They need 2 advertise properly the exact times of food service (online & outside the restaurant) so that ppl know when 2 come 2 eat. Least 2 say, I'm very disappointed & probably won't b back

We did not enjoy the experience. Despite the view, the restaurant is dirty and tired and needs deep cleaned. The young staff tried their best but they were not being managed and not trained. We had seafood chowder to start which was ok but just full of butter and not seasoned correctly. My wife had sea bass for main course but the fish was not fresh and the mash potato was cold. I had chicken tariyaki which was inedible. We saw deserts stacked on the counter which was a serious hygiene issue and messy. The whole place is messy and unsightly. The toilets were filthy and made us concerned for hygiene, period! I will not be returning until under new management.

** I can without contradiction honestly say that the meal we were presented at 55 Degrees North, was the largest mixed grill I've ever received, the meal was top of the range, staff to be so young, were really pleasant, & the restaurant was totally immaculate, I recommend a visit when in the area. 10/10

My all time favourite spot when in North Coast. I've noticed a few changes over the years. Used to love the 2 course and 3 course option (but this way I eat less now I guess!) Also I used to love to be able to buy the chefs wheaten bread which doesn't seem to be advertised anymore and last week I noticed no mention of butterscotch sauce on the menu now either. These were just a fee favourites which I hope will return in the near future but won't put me off coming back. Lovely food beautiful views and alswywa been lucky to book a window seat when requested.

We had a Sunday roast dinner An it was good, couldnt fault it, the only thing was some spillage of food on floor , at table which could've been cleaned up.....went back following week which was a bank holiday, same meal was well up in price, 🤔 (not good)

Vorneweg, das Personal war bemüht aber dennoch überfordert. Außerdem bedienten fast nur Kinder bzw. Jugendliche 😨. Ist das legal in Nordirland, auch nach 21:45 Uhr ??? Das Essen war eine einzige Katastrophe, der schlechteste Burger, den ich je in einem Restaurant hatte. Ein kleines Stück schwarz gebratenes Fleisch, total trocken und fad, versteckt unter einem riesigen Berg Zwiebeln (klar, die Kosten nichts!). Als ich die Bedienung darauf aufmerksam machte, war das Feedback des jungen Jugendlichen nur unbeholfenes Zucken ohne Kommentar. Was soll man von einem Kind auch erwarten??? Es erfolgte keinerlei weiteres Feedback oder Entschuldigung des Managements. Es handelt sich hier um eine überteuerte Abzockerbude, die man nicht besuchen sollte!

Booked a table requested a table when booking over looking the sea instead was giving a table with no view, asked for salad to go along with the food the response was we don't give salid unless you order a stir fry on the hottest day of the year no air-conditioning and to top it off the food service was nil wouldn't recommend the place to anyone
