Byron High Ousegate in York

Beautiful burgers, very tasty and the fries are crispy. Called in on the off chance and so glad we did. Will definitely call again, next time we are in York.

Restaurant was grubby was places in a booth with ripped seats. Glasses were dirty with old orange drainage on them. Despite being clear that one of the guests had allergies they brought out the wrong drink for her - this could have been really dangerous. Had the £7 lunch menu and ordered the buyer milk chicken burger, there was no chicken burger just a couple of small chicken goujons. Wasn’t impressed at all previous visits to other Byron’s were really enjoyable, felt like the chain has gone downhill

Our waitress (maria) was such a sweet girl who provided us with amazing service and the chefs provided us with amazing quality food. This said however we were shocked to see our lovely waitress reduced to tears by an agressive blonde woman, who also seemed to be acting as a waitress but was not wearing the correct uniform. When we asked if she was the girls manager we were told she wasn't and wasn't even the supervisor on shift but simply the same level as our waitress (maria). Something needs to be done about this woman she can not carry on treating other staff members like this. Maria if you see this you are a lovely girl good luck in your studies with law you are a credit both to your job and your family. PS despite the high quality food and service from Maria, I will not be returning to a business that condones that behaviour and will allow staff members to be treated like this and will advise others to do as such.

It was a frigid day in York and I was starving. There are some days when ONLY a burger will do - on those days go to Byron. They’ll take good care of you. A lovely waitress called Maria greeted and seated us and got the drinks and menus sorted. I chose an IPA beer that was as tutti and fruity as me on a weekend! What a perfect way to start lunch. I chose the double bacon cheese with regular fries and it was sublime. My partner in crime chose a vegan option and sang its praises too. I would confidently take Jules from Pulp Fiction here, confident that he would announce “mmm-mmmm. That is a tasty burger!”. These guys run circles around Big Kahuna Burgers IMO. Not a cheap gig by any means but buy nice or buy twice. Well worth the money for a superb dining experience.

Fantastic! Ignore past reviews...we have been going for years and have never had a bad experience. Don't go if you want a big Mac style burger!!!!! You won't get it here!!! Thank God...they serve great burgers...real meat...fresh salad...piping hot fries..and service with a smile. Keep doing what you are doing...we will be back soon. Cheers !

They do gluten free buns here and also have good awareness about gluten free foods They have a menu highlighting the different allergens in the food I had someone come over to me to explain they used different fryers etc to avoid cross contamination which was great I had the meatless burger and tater tots which was lovely My partner had a Christmas special burger that came with gravy Would recommend

Nowhere on the menu or the website does it state that they will add a discretionary 10% service charge to your bill. This is illegal for a start but when I went to pay for my meal, the waitress printed the bill off, hid it under the card machine and held it out for me to pay. She didn't inform me that there was a hidden charge nor was she openly going to allow me to see this on the bill for myself - I had to ask to see the bill and when I saw the charge, asked her to remove it. They don't do the 'do you want to add a tip' thing any more, they're forcing customers to tip by fraudulent means. The staff probably don't see this money either. There was a young couple opposite me who did get to see their bill - they were visibly distressed by seeing the charge. After an uncomfortable exchange between them, they paid it - too polite to ask for it to be removed. Byron know this (a lot of chain restaurants are adding this politeness tax to their bill now) and are probably making 10% more out of every customer who is either oblivious to the fact they've been charged it or too polite to ask for it to be removed. It's disgusting - and the state of the room at the back with the plastic roof with scratched grafittied tables, seats with the pleather ripped and stuffing hanging out, stains all over the cushions. It's a vile practice - it's like being pick pocketed. At least tell people about the charge! Not telling them just proves you shouldn't be adding it. I've contacted Watchdog, Trading Standards and Citizens Advice - I've also contacted Byron but not one of them has replied. Consumer Rights are no more. All I can say is, check your bill and tell them to remove this illegal charge. If you want to tip, give cash to the server.

Service was good, food was average, prices are extortionate. The food was scarily quick. The food was not very tasty had the B Rex. Not sure it was seasoned. At least the burger should come with fries for that. It’s £13.50 for a burger you could get at McDonald’s.

Lovely place to eat. The staff are very nice and do their very best to make sure your eating experience is top notch . I will definitely be eating here again.

Great food and staff. Very tired decor and freezing! Put a door on the cellar to stop the bin smell. End wall has paint falling of it. Bench seating huge holes in it! Not great for a world heritage city! C’mon Byron, spend something on decor and cleaning!

Early lunchtime stop. We thought Byron had gone busy but they clearly haven’t! We all enjoyed our burgers- the vegan one was really good. The chicken strips we’re deliciously juicy and it was all freshly cooked. Would definitely come back.

Popped in for a quick lunch. The inside is a little worn and tired (rips in the fabric of the seating) but the burgers more than made up for that. Buttermilk chicken burger was juicy! So good. Fantastic range of American drinks too. I would definitely visit again.

Le personnel est RACISTE 😡! je m’étais rendu non loin de cette enseigne avec 2 amis (blancs) et tout se passait bien et un de mes amis devait aller au toilettes il alla donc dans la direction de ce restaurant afin de demander où est ce qu’elles se trouvaient et une serveuse lui les a indiquées. Peu de temps après je devais m’y rendre également mais cette MÊME serveuse était froide et pas vraiment sympathique à mon égard et m’a informé que j’étais obligé de consommer pour pouvoir y accéder. Confus, les doutes commencèrent à paraître dans mon esprit et dans celui de mes amis lorsque je leur ai raconté cette histoire. Alors mon 2ème ami se prêta volontaire pour aller demander une troisième fois à la MÊME serveuse et qu’elle fut notre surprise lorsque nous constatâmes que cette serveuse l’avait laisser y aller 😡😡 Alors quand j’écris « le personnel est raciste » comprenez bien que je ne m’adresse la pas à tout les honnêtes travailleurs mais bien à cette (je suis à 2 doigts de mettre une insulte sachez le) femme que j’hésite presque à décrire physiquement pour révéler le vrai visage des gens qui vous entourent au quotidien…

Exceptional food and service, best burger I’ve had in a long time. Staff were friendly and attentive, kids max cheese amazing, IPA on tap window booth to people watch, Haven’t written a review in a couple of years but this place deserves it 10/10.

Came here with my family. It was great to be able to have a Byron burger with a gluten free bun and the fries were gluten free too. Excellent meal, service was good, food arrived quickly and was so fresh. Definitely recommend 😊

We visit every time we take a trip to York, our recent one being no exception. The food and service has always been great previously and we weren’t disappointed this time, with perhaps the only exception being the spicy chicken wings, which seemed rather ‘vinegary’ and not as nice as usual, but these were edible. The only disappointment is aesthetics; the restaurant is now looking a little tired and could certainly do with some TLC, particularly to the seating and upholstery as some of this was in a very poor state. Other than this I would definitely recommend eating here.

Lunch treat for the granddaughter. The menu is limited, but more than adequate for a ‘burger joint’. Service was excellent and the food was very good. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and noted the takeout service was very busy. Would certainly eat there again.

Such a disappointment - we used to eat at Byron's in many different cities but this experience has really put us off. We booked a table for dinner as it was our wedding anniversary and wanted to sure of getting in. On arrival we were shown to our table and ordered drinks. After 10 mins we were ready to order and that's where the fun started. We tried to order 4 different dishes, only to be met with "Sorry we are out of ..." No chicken, no sweet potato fries, not even any Fanta Orange - surely we could have been told of this before we took our seats (they weren't that busy so they hadn't JUST ran out). So we chose a chilli burger with side of slaw, and a halloumi burger with no garnish, only BBQ sauce. and we waited, and waited. eventually when it did arrive we were presented with two sorry looking plates, each with a bun slapped in the middle and no care or attention to presentation. The halloumi burger was dark brown, well over cooked and hard, no BBQ sauce and a slop of melted plastic cheese sticking the bun down. My chilli burger looked burned and the bun soggy. When I asked for my slaw I was told "You didn't order any and even if you had we've ran out" Suffice it to say, we didn't eat there and we certainly won't recommend anyone else eating there either - such a disappointment as Byrons were always the place you could be guaranteed a great burger.
