But 'n' Ben in Angus

Quaint little pub/restaurant not far from the coast with an open log fire, perfect for when the weather is bad. Staff are very welcoming, served us with a smile, and always ready to help. We didn't book and it was busy, but they still were able to accommodate us. Food was good especially the Smokie Soup. We had fish and chips, one with batter the other in oatmeal, both were nice although the batter on the fish was a little soggy. Would recommend.

A great meal out again I had the prawn stuffed haddock, in a cheese sauce, my wife had the venison Both dishes were perfectly cooked, by Angus theChef/ owner Margo, as ever the gracious host Staff were lovely and very attentive Cannot fault the But n Ben, thoroughly reccomend this, it's very popular, so suggest book in advance

Amazing sea food and great service

My partner and I went for dinner while we were holidaying in Arbroath as we'd heard good things about it. The young girl who served us was very pleasant. The food was pretty mediocre with frozen chips! The worst thing was that the owner made conversation with every other diner who she seemed familiar with but made absolutely no conversation with us. We were made to feel rank outsiders. A little pleasantry would have been nice. Very disappointing.

Although the ambience is very dated - don’t be put off, the food is amazing! Very homely, plentiful , and certainly delicious! Speaking only for myself, I had the smokie pancake which hasn’t changed one bit since I first tasted it in the 1980s. That’s a good thing ! ❤️ everything served with large portions of very fresh local veg. And a charming smile! Truly Scottish home-style cooking at its very best!!

Would have loved to have given a positive review today, but couldn’t because you were closed during your advertised opening hours, ie open on Sunday from 12.00 to 14.00 hrs (website). We were looking forward to Smokey in a Pancake and left our bikes outside prior to walking along the cliffs from Arbroath. The sign on your door confirmed that you would be open then. Having driven to Arbroath and walked back, we were very disappointed to arrive at 1.15 pm to find you closed, and looking as if you hadn’t opened at all today. So we were forced to head back to find some lunch in Arbroath. I don’t want to carp too much, but I’d be pleased if you could update your website and front door notice when you know you’ll be closed. I’d like to come back sometime, but would be reluctant to do that if I wasn’t sure you’d be open.

Great as usual, excellent food and plenty of it. It's as good now as it was 20 years ago.

We went for 6pm last week. We were welcomed with a warm and pleasant atmosphere. The lady that service was very friendly. She advised us of the special, which was scallops and mussels. It was lovely. The restaurant filled up quickly, with a great atmosphere. We will definitely be returning in December 😀

The people working there are friendly and they had two vegan options (not in the menu) when I was there (and some veggie/vegetarian options on the menu). I had lentil curry with vegetables and rice. We called ahead to check first. And the setting is neat, near the cliff leading down to the harbour and beach.

We had lovely food and great service.

Lovely haddock with oatmeal. Fish very fresh. Good selection of veg and a huge bowl of chips. Sticky toffee pudding and custard for desert. Yum yum

Enjoyed a great meal in this small and intimate restaurant. Food was local and very appetizing and the staff were great being so attentive even explaining a dish I tried which was out with my comfort zone.

Echt vriendelijke dames in de bediening. We mochten helaas met de hond niet binnen zitten, maar we mochten de cola en lekkere taart met ijs buiten opeten. Nadat ik het bord en de lepels teruggebracht had kreeg de hond nog even een uitgebreide knuffel. Wat een leuke ervaring. Bedankt!

This was our best meal in Scotland. The smoked Haddock dishes were incredible and my grilled turbot with capers was one of the best fish preparations I’ve ever had. Lovely in-season strawberry dessert was a good end to a great meal. Loved this place.

Cozy restaurant with a great seafood menu (there are alternatives to fish too). Attentive and friendly staff. Smokie soup and pancakes are highly recommended. I had the seafood platter with a superb dressed crab and a good selection of local delicacies.

Not a review of the restaurant just a massive shout out to Annie. Having walked from Arbroath as part of our Dundee to Aberdeen coastal walk wrong walking shoes meant badly blistered feet. With no way of getting back to our hotel Annie saved the day by giving us a lift Thanks so much we will pay it forward ps after picking up proper walking shoes we made it all the way to aberdeen

This is a fabulous restaurant located in a rural area on outskirts of Arbroath. Easy to access along a good tarmac country road. In the small hamlet of Auchmithie on the coast. The food and service are both excellent. There is a wide choice and food is locally sourced and beautifully made. Lots of nice touches like choice of artisan breads. The decor is very tasteful and the whole experience very relaxing. We would definitely make a return visit and would recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Very welcoming, great atmosphere, staff and management worked hard to ensure all our party had a great evening. Venison main was excellent and would recommend. Cream of Smokie soup was fine but the smokey flavour needs to be stronger. Great venue.

This was our first trip to the But n Ben for some years. We were delighted to find the food was just as good and the welcome just as warm. We were with French friends, who loved the traditional interior and the village. I had the wonderful smoky pancake, the two wives had fish and chips, one with oatmeal, the other with batter and our other guest had Shetland mussels. All were delicious, as was the cheesecake and the fruit crumble. Our young waitresses were charming and efficient and as a highlight, Margo Horne appeared and at the end of the meal, we reminisced about old friends who used to eat there with us and who are no longer around. I even got a hug from Margo at the end. A thoroughly enjoyable trip down memory lane!

Lovely restaurant tucked away in the village of Auchmithie. Excellent food and very friendly and amusing staff. Only issue for tall people - some of the chair and table combinations make it very difficult to get your legs anywhere comfortable.

This is a traditional Scottish place, from what my family tell. Definitely leans towards seafood, but there are steak options. I had the Salmon with the orange butter. But the star that most of our table had was the smokies pancake.

Lovely lunch with friends, two of us had been before and one of us had not. It certainly didn’t disappoint we all had the fish and chips with veg to share. Delicious haddock with lovely light crispy batter and crispy chips plenty of them and veg was carrots and broccoli and a lovely creamy homemade tartar sauce. We also had sweet my friend and I had the homemade apple and rhubarb crumble with light creamy custard and our other friend had chocolate cake which they warmed for her with cream. I hadn’t been for a wee while and we kept speaking about how good it was at work so got it booked. Well worth it and just as delicious as I remembered.

We booked the But n Ben due to really great reviews and decided to try out the seafood and steak. The food itself was great, especially the seafood platter which was 10/10, however we received a frosty service from one of the waitresses who didn't seem to want to engage with us at all, and dismissed us from the beginning. When we sat down we didn't get drinks menus and when we asked for them 30 mins later we were greeted with the menu and not much else. The service from the food servers was fine, but the lady seemed to dismiss us as non locals and didn't tell us what the specials were or give us chance to order anything throughout the evening additional to our food. Most of the evening she chatted to the people next to us who had been going in their own words for around 15 years, so clearly she didn't want to engage with us much instead. The steak for a premium dish was nice but nothing special and the chips were not home made. Id recommend the food without the service.

My wife and myself went for lunch, pre-booked, the greeting was very formal, OK, we waited 15 minutes before the waitress came to our table, and then she brought the menu, and asked for the drinks order. Two different bottled ciders were ordered, this was served in the glass, which was half full, yet the bottles hold 500 ml. We had about a third of the contents, and were charged £7.80. The kedgeree for my wife consisted of a plate of coloured rice with about a table spoon of flaked fish & a boiled egg on top. Nothing like the photo on their site. My Arbroath Smokey was a mass of bones, had not been prepared properly before cooking, and the vegetables were plain boiled and tasteless.What a rip off, plain cooking, very amateurish, but their site indicates something special and exciting. The restaurant should be renamed, `Rip off n' Go`

Food nothing like the photos, don't think they like the English either. We would never go back. Overpriced for something very mediocre.
