Bulls Head in Richmond upon Thames

Very disappointing experience. We had come for pre-jazz dinner, but the lovely dining room and kind but over-stretched waitresses were the highlights. The menu is varied and promises much, but the food that was served was not great. The expensive sirloin steak was very fat, gristly, overcooked and tough (fully refunded without any quibbles). The mixed roasted vegetable salad was stone cold. The cod cheek scampi was over-fried. The beef burger was good. Two of the big mains (T-bone pork and lamb pie) were off the menu (it was only 6.45pm) as were two of the six puddings, not that we had time to try any of them because the slow food production made us late for the jazz (which was excellent). We won’t be dining here again in a hurry, which is a shame since it’s a lovely pub.

My booking at another pub for my husband's 70th birthday lunch fell through (no fault of the pub's, just a misunderstanding) and I was hunting round for a venue with a few days to go. The Bull turned up trumps and squeezed us in (16 of us, including 3 kids under 5). They have a lovely room for a family party with plenty of room for chatting before we sat down, which was great. The team were friendly and efficient. The food we ordered was mainly a good Sunday roast menu, although some members of the party had fish and chips and a burger, which were good. The children's menu was great - the kids had their burger, macaroni cheese and fish and chips, and there were no complaints. We were very happy with the whole. The people new to the Bull were very impressed with the food, service and surroundings, and massive thanks to the team for getting me out of a hole at short notice!!

Great building. Nice interior. Good for a pint only, it would seem ( which is how we first discovered it). Contrary to what they say on the website, do not go for the Sunday lunch. They make out it is what they are passionate about! It may as well have been school dinners. And we waited over an hour for the pleasure. The staff also mean well ( I think), but hard to tell; no smiles, no genuine welcome; no acknowledgement of how slow they were. Anyone would have thought, from when we booked and when we arrived, that they were going to be rammed, and rushed off their feet. Instead, they just had that appearance of a really difficult serving period, but the place wasn’t even half full ! One sees it a lot these days; good service is led from the top down. If you put a good manager and good chef in this establishment, with the classic interior , fresh, open classic pub style, and great location by the river, it would absolutely fly. The clue is it was half empty and the 2 pubs, next door and 700m up river, were totally full! Come on owners! You really need to sort this. I will be sticking to a pint only and pork scratching here. No food or table service.

Over priced, bland roast. Roast chicken that doesn’t come with anything green on the plate… which is far to small to eat off. 3 bits of roast potato. 1 small bit of roast parsnip but if you like runny orange goo covering half the plate then you’re in like. Carrot and swede soup maybe? 4 anaemic stuffing balls that had no taste. Service was non existent. Staff looked bored. No “how is your meal” plates not cleared. Dirty pub. Look at the ceiling over the bar. Think I might skip this one next time.

This used to be my favourite pub in Barnes, now beers are regularly off and I have just been served an inedible meal. Chicken Kiev burnt, mash unseasoned and rubbery form of greens I think was supposed to be kale. The gravy was solid globule of fat. Just walked out in disgust. Never again

Booked for Sunday lunch for 2.30 pm. Once seated we had to wait far too long before we were even offered drinks because the waitress was making coffees for another table and seemed to be the only staff member waiting on the big room at the rear. Then we we were finally able to order they were completely out of all roast dinners. And after that, the next table to arrive then left because they didn’t even have any burgers left. We don’t live in the area anymore and were out for a rare treat. We ended up spending a load of money on food we didn’t want. I wish we’d chosen somewhere else.

What a lovely setting. The food was delicious and served hot and the service was friendly and good. The fried fish was excellent as the batter was thin and crispy.

A public house that does everything perfectly right. Great drinks, beautiful classy interior, superb friendly service. Shout out goes to Josh who always looked after us so well during the Women's WC screenings. 10/10

Five of us had Sunday lunch. The roasts, which my friends had, all looked tasty and were good value for money. I just had hummous and bread - was expecting some nice pitta, sourdough or flat bread, instead I got strips of crispbread, which weren't particularly nice. The hummous was rather dull too, I only ate it as was very hungry. Still, we had a nice bottle of Tempranillo and the service was very good.

We used to love The Bull’s Head, but its interior is now no different from the ubiquitous stripped-wood interiors of so many establishments. Noisy, pulsating early-evening music prompted us to seek a quieter spot, so we ventured into a small courtyard which, for some very weird reason, was carpeted with astro turf - the exterior was unkempt, dirty, leaves and some degree of rubbish on this turf and the gruesome sight of a very badly corroded, heavily rusted pipe above our heads didn’t improve the ambiance. I’ve given this place an “average” because the staff were very pleasant, but clearly improvement is necessary.

Lovely place just by the river, rooms were quaint and homely. Staff attentive and smiley, food was exquisite.

Came in for a Sunday lunch. Service was great and the Yorkshire puddings were huge! Can’t wait to come back. Had a drink upstairs afterwards and the view is stunning!

We had booked an early evening table so that we had plenty of time for dinner prior to watching the jazz concert at 8 p.m. The venue was not busy when we ordered. Unfortunately the mains took a long time to arrive, making the experience far more stressful than it should have been. In addition, one of our party didn’t get theirs until the rest of us had almost finished ours. They had ordered Moules and when it eventually turned up there was no liquid in the pot and it had to be returned. The rest of the food was well prepared and tasty and the music was very enjoyable.

The Bulls Head never fails to impress and on this occasion following the ING the easing of lockdown restrictions had exceeded our expectations with breathtaking views of river Thames, efficient and curteous staff and great variety of dishes bursting with flavour.

Had a wonderful day in the pub. The man running the bar, Trent, treated us really well. Had fantastic steak, with a beautiful hollandaise. And my friends cod and chips was fantastic too.

Having eaten Sunday lunch (7/4/19 Boat race) at the Bulls Head, we were keen to return for a repeat experience, sadly this time was very disappointing. I ordered what I thought was the same dish, pork belly (menu states Crispy Hampshire pork belly) but a) it was not crispy and b) although pork, I’m pretty certain it wasn’t belly. My daughter had wanted the plant based burger as advertised on the online Sunday lunch menu but this was not available. The waitress asked if I wanted a Yorkshire pudding and pigs in blanket with my pork dinner, I replied yes only to discover I was charged separately for both on top of my bill (50p and £1.50) which I thought ought to have been included in the £17 charge of my roast dinner. Overall underwhelmed, we won’t be back sadly

Went last Sunday and was excited to have my first Sunday vegan roast since lockdown started. Unfortunately it was off the menu. I am a local and have been to the Bulls Head a number of times and this was not the first time where vegan menu items have not been available. The only other vegan main option was a baked aubergine with chickpeas and a tomato sauce. When it arrived it look very unappealing with mushed up chickpeas sitting on the aubergine and the sauce on the side. Unfortunately it also tasted mushy and bland, the most flavoursome part of the dish was a few salad leaves. I could only do two bites of the aubergine/chickpeas and the rest was left.There was no comment from the waitress when she came to pick up my full plate showing no concern that there may been an issue with my meal. Therefore I felt the need to say that the dish was not good. She was not interested and responded that "some people order it". Taken aback with her lack of customer service, I responded "probably not more than once". She then said "oh well" and left our table. If instead she had simply said "I'm sorry to hear that, I will pass your comments onto the chef/manger" I would return to the the Bulls Head, but alas, I will no longer be a customer.

table was all sticky (hadn't been wiped down properly from the night before). i see someone else made the same observation about their table only last month and the manager has responded to it below. but clearly cleaning the tables isn't top priority. at least we are not concerned about germs at the moment.in relation to the food: average and expensive. The kids food (no printed menu, just told the options by a waitress) was £9 for a kid's fish and chips (a quarter of the size of an adult portion). this didn't include a drink or ice cream etc. This is the most expensive kids meal in barnes. and it isnt the best. because the kids menu isn't printed out the price was a shock at the end of the meal.

Servicio aburrido y desorientado, comida sencilla a un precio excesivo y porciones no generosas. Y, santo de los santos, ¡la pinta de ordinario de Young tenía un sabor amargo! Si no puede molestarse en mantener a su Young en buenas condiciones, ríndase, por favor. Totalmente olvidable. No tengo ninguna duda de que el jazz seguirá siendo bueno aquí cuando vuelva, pero no lo combine con la experiencia gastronómica.

Decidimos reservar nuestra ceremonia de asociación civil en The Bulls Head, Barnes, por su fabulosa ubicación, su gran área de pub y su bonito jardín. La sala Melrose tiene una decoración encantadora, dos hermosas chimeneas y ventanas francesas, la habitación tiene un ambiente luminoso y aireado con impresionantes vistas sobre el río Támesis.Al reabrir pudimos ver que Kate the Pub Manager y su equipo habían trabajado incansablemente para implementar todos los procedimientos de salud y seguridad y se les mantuvo informados de lo que se requería para garantizar que nuestra fiesta de bodas fuera segura.Cuando nos reunimos con Kate y el chef Gabriel para hablar sobre nuestro menú y los variados requisitos dietéticos para algunos de nuestros invitados, nada fue demasiado problema. La comida es de origen local y esto no me decepcionó. Beef Wellington magníficamente cocinado, puré perfecto y verduras con salsa. Los budines de Yorkshire, grandes y ligeros, ¡son un gran elogio de una Yorkshire Lass!El asado de nueces vegano fue uno de los mejores que mi hijo ha probado con abundantes porciones.Variada selección de platos de queso.Budines de caramelo pegajosos húmedos y sorbetes de limón ligeros y refrescantes.Máxima nota para el chef y su equipo. Antes de tener nuestra ceremonia / recepción arriba en The Melrose Room. Nos complació tener la sala más pequeña de Holst / Library ubicada en la planta baja para la llegada de nuestros huéspedes con una fuente perfecta de pasteles para el desayuno, té / café. Esta sala estuvo disponible nuevamente para nosotros después de la ceremonia para canapés, bebidas para brindar por nuestra celebración. Todos nosotros y nuestros invitados estamos de acuerdo en que la comida era fabulosa y muy sabrosa, a un precio razonable junto con las bebidas.Este establecimiento ha sido muy servicial con la asignación de tiempo para hacer nuestras propias decoraciones el día anterior y el día de la boda cuando tomamos nuestras fotos / video. La tarta de cordero de Dorset era un buen plato principal. ¡También nos encantó el espumoso rosa provenzal francés como aperitivo! Ambiente agradable, buen servicio, excelente ubicación. Just had a fantastic Sunday Roast. Honestly this is the best roast in Chiswick or Barnes. We have been here before lockdown many times and it’s back to its best. Ashley looked after us extremely well.

After a long walk by the Thames we wanted somewhere for a quick lunch and spotted The Bulls Head. We didn't regret our choice! This is a large venue with a super light, airy room looking over the Thames. The menu is short but there were some good choices and the food was very good quality. Our waitress (Layla) was perfect - professional but very friendly and we felt very welcome.The compliance with covid 19 rules was excellent and could be used as a model for how this can be done in a way that doesn't spoil the visit. Full marks to all of the team.This was just a quick visit but we will be back!

A great place for a family lunch. Maybe a little quiet given Coronavirus but fantastic food and service an good beer on tap. Proper Job and Saucery were worth a mention. Everything we had to eat was very good - risotto, classic burgers, ginger pig sausages and mash and the venison scotch egg. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. And by the river. What’s not to like.

Let’s be upfront, we were late for our lunch reservation thanks to the ongoing problems caused by the closure of Hammersmith Bridge. Maybe that explains why an hour into opening that runs from noon until 22:30, they had run out of what must be a staple of Sunday trade, roast beef. But it didn’t excuse the chaotic service that ensued. Having waited five minutes for a table that was already free I and set, when we were seated, we were then abandoned with nobody attempting to take so much as a drinks order, despite plenty of young staff seeming to drift about with little to do. The young man eventually sent to in our direction, let us get halfway through the order, before saying he needed to write it down. He returned with a tablet which he was struggling to use, explaining this was his first day. The order taken, he was back a moment later to tell us the beef had run out. A few minutes later his boss arrived at the table to re-take the entire order. We waited and waited. Our food was five minutes away. It wasn’t.”Its here now.” It still wasn’t. The delays culminated in one of our party being told the main selection they had chosen was still a quarter of an hour away, several minutes after the first course dishes had been cleared. With their food not even coming over the horizon, they had to cancel and leave - staff having taken an hour since our arrival to serve them with a shandy and a bowl of soup. So to the food. The venison scotch egg was very nice, though serving on a piece of slate barely wider than the egg, was a recipe for ones food ending up on the table. It was however excellent value compared to the £8 charged for some toasted - I suppose it was supposed to be warmed, slices of bread from loaves you might find in any supermarket with an in -store bakery. The two remaining diners both had roast pork belly. The accompanying vegetables were nice enough, but crackling covering the 3” square of meat was pretty much impervious to the cutlery. The over-all verdict: This is a premium location where you can expect to pay a premium price for average food (Our two starters, two mains, some bread and and 1 1/2 pints of shandy just shy of £70) all served up with well below par service.

We always enjoy the jazz at the Bull's Head, Barnes. We love Shireen Francis and her band. However, we were a bit disappointed in Sunday lunch. The roast were huge but poorly cooked and poorly presented; bland gravy, over-cooked veg, meat cooked and carved too far in advance, lacking any finesse £18 per dish. Wine at £29 a bottle over-priced. It's a cosy pub with pleasant service but needs to up it's game on food to match the prices. We still had a great afternoon but that was mainly because of the great music.

El club de jazz es bastante interno, ya que alberga a unas 70 personas, tiene un pequeño bar allí, todos tuvieron una gran noche.

Aprecio que este es un restaurante estándar en el centro de Londres, no demasiado ocupado cuando comimos aquí.Buen menú, el servicio fue lento, pero la comida excelente, aunque costosa para un restaurante "estándar".Uno piensa que me molesta, en la mesa a mi lado, una dama la mayor parte de la noche, usó sus cigarrillos electrónicos, exhaló mucho humo, el personal no hizo nada al respecto, ¡es ilegal! ! ! !

I've been visting this pub on and off for 30 + years. It's famous in London as a cenre for modern jazz and in recent years the food has improved a great deal. The Youngs ales are well kept and delicious. Highly recommended.

We always enjoy our visit to the Bulls head, the lady is so welcoming, and are looking forward to their expansion:-)

We went to the Bulls Head after our dog walk. We went for a roast but then smelt the fish and chips and decided to get them instead was lovely!

Excellent small live music and comedy venue at rear of a lovely pub .......very good food too so well worth a visit.

Good food, good real ale, as well as the Legendary Zoot Money and the Big Roll Band led to a really great night. It was a privilege also to see Ken Clayton and his daughter Alex perform, thanks to all.

This is about the third or fourth time I've been to The Bulls Head. This time the service was better, and the food was it's usual high standard. I tried the bangers and mash which was really good. We then popped to the jazz which was great.

Good food and great service. Ding are at is elegant and roomy. My meal was very tasty and well presented.

Excellent Sunday lunch in this vibrant, busy pub. Roast beef with all the trimmings and yummy Cheeseburger. Service was excellent and staff seemed to be having fun too. We followed this to a visit to the Jazz Room for Sunday Jazz, Michele Ingham and Gill Cook plus a great backing band. Nice way to spend a Sunday

Was here at the weekend. Love this pub. The pie roast is to die for. The staff were on point particularly Gabbi who made us feel very welcome. Would definitely come back!

We enjoyed a tasty Sunday lunch, with a roast chicken and a great vegetable wellington. The Yorkshires were huge. It's good to have pleasant table service in a lovely light room. Good value for a comfortable and relaxing Sunday.

Can’t fault our visit, food and service was fab, roast pork divine. TV footage of the Boat Race action, with a timed dart outside after the race started to watch Cambridge win!
