Popped in for a drink on a visit to the area. Not been in a year and the team remembered us. Even fitted us in for a meal. Was really nice to be welcomed back as an old friend. Food is lovely and I would recommend to anyone in the area

Had a fantastic lunch with family friends and some of us chose off the specials board, 2 of us had the sirloin steak and 6 lovely king prawns on top. One of the best steaks I have had! And fantastic value for money! Wainwrights beer was in lovely condition as well, we will be back.

I had to call for a table at last minute due to being let down by another local establishment not what you need when entertaining a customer and his wife From entering to leaving was made very welcome by everyone and food was excellent in the end good evening after a very disappointing start & customers left very happy Thank you 🙏🏻 To everyone concerned

We’ve been coming here for several years - pre and post Covid and can say , hand on heart, we have never had a bad experience. We’ve been for mid week lunch, Sunday Roast, evening meal ….. all as fabulous as the other. The menu is big , specials imaginative and varied, great price point. Staff are friendly, attentive without being over the top. The surroundings are entertaining! If you’re bored of your company you can read the many quotes on the walls or in the garden ! We’ll be back again for sure !

Avoid like the plague. The menu was presented and was quite appealing. I got the calamari and obviously realised it wouldn’t be fresh in a pub grub type of establishment, but to get a plate of squid that still had its membrane on, stank of a mixture of malt vinegar and rotting fish and get charged a fortune for the privilege was a bit of a liberty, not to mention the undercooked black pud!! We won’t be going back.

This restaurant is our go to for tasty quality meals. The menu has a varied selection of dishes and additionally there is a specials board which changes regularly. The quality of produce and presentation of the dishes is outstanding. If you are celebrating something special or just fancy a really good meal this pub is a must. Highly recommend the chicken with king prawns and mushroom stroganoff. There is a good selection of drinks and the house wine is of s high quality. On a warm sunny day the beer garden is a relaxing place to chill out and take in the quirkiness of all the garden features/signs and ornaments. The owners are warm and welcoming, Reece and the waitresses are friendly and attentive, nothing is too much trouble. Would highly recommend just ensure you book in advance as very popular and always busy.

we had lunch here today. Popular place called on off chance and were lucky to get a table. Rung a few times to book a table normally on the same day, so we normally can't get in, so recommend ringing a few days before the food is excellent service, excellent atmosphere, excellent.

Called in at lunchtime to this quirky little pub. Loved the decor both inside & out. The food was delicious and service really good too. Not overpriced, great value for money. Highly recommended 😊.

I ordered the beef stroganoff and was extremely disappointed. I ate it but didn’t enjoy it. The sauce was not creamy but had a brown tinge. Also the sauce had quite an acidic taste. Thought it might have been balsamic vinegar in the sauce but now think it was Lea and Perrins or Worcestershire sauce. Not my idea of a traditional creamy beef stroganoff.

Always a lovely atmosphere and a warm welcome. Popped in with a friend for fish and chips and it was all super fresh and spot on. Food here never disappoints and good value. Highly recommended

Came here for my Mums Birthday Meal last week. I called up in advance to check the Vegetarian options for my Mum and there was a lot of choice. I asked if they would be able to make a spicy Vegetarian curry if possible as that is my Mums favourite, the lady on the phone confirmed that was absolutely no problem and was really accommodating. We all had starters, mains and puddings, at it was all lovely. All the staff working that night (Thursday 18th) were really attentive and made my Mums birthday meal really special. Thank you for a lovely meal, we will definitely be returning soon.

Lovely atmosphere, lots of parking, a nice beer garden, and never had a disappointing meal yet. The halloumi burger is great. The chips are proper skin on fat chips. Only down side is that you can't book or see a menu online. Very retro 😉 Definitely recommended.

We dropped on this little gem totally by accident after unsuccessfuly trying to get into Halifax for a home football game (police incident) so as compensation decided to dine out . A very nice meal and a drink each , very reasonably priced , it certainly filled our bellies for the night . Also very pleasant and helpful staff as obviously we had not pre booked .we may after the next game .

Have walked past this pub a few times and never really had a chance to go in, but I am so glad we finally did! Garden is so beautiful and quirky and the general atmosphere was just perfect. Only stopped for few drinks, but ended up ordering few starters to nibble on and they were amazing! Very friendly staff and attentive service and the place itself was so clean with all the Covid safety measures in place. We will definitely be back to try more things on the menu!!! :)

As we are in lockdown 2.0 and everyone is struggling and the only thing we have to do to keep sane and positive is go for walks. We parked here as the car park was open and other cars were parked in so we took our 3 dogs for a nice walk. We didn't believe there would be an issue parking here as the pub was closed and other cars were parked. We arrived back from our walk to be blocked in. That would have been ok as we understand it is a private car park and we would knock to ask them to move and explain we didn't think there would be an issue. When we were putting the dogs in the car and their teenage son lacking manners shouted mockingly "hahah you're blocked in". That is rude enough in itself. We then went to the door and the woman said we would not be allowed out until 4 o'clock when it was 2.30 we said we didn't think there would be an issue as other cars were parked there the pub was closed and wouldn't have visitors to fill the large car park. A man then came round and shouted angrily at us, "my tarmack isn't free you can't park here, I will move my car when I am good and ready" being 3 young girls this was obviously scary and the scene created was inappropriate and rude. Once he finally moved his car and let us out he then put his car back to block the other people in, no doubt to repeat the scene and make other people uncomfortable and have another confrontation. During a pandemic with walking as an only escape for people, this is not how innocently parking in a car park which was not closed should be dealt with. We are told to support local businesses as well as support each other. After this rude display I would not recommend supporting this rude local business who go out of their way to intimidate and cause scenes like this when people are trying to handle their own lives. You should support others how you wish to be supported yourself. If there was a sign on the car park stating for customer use only do not park here, or it was cordened off we would not have parked here. From reading the other reviews left on sites, the rude ways of this business is not a one off.

What a great pub!!!We went for dinner on a Wednesday evening and it was great.All I can say is the food is excellent, friendly service and the Covid preconditions were in place, signing in, taken to a pre-booked table, cutlery in sealed bags and 1 in 1 out for the use of the toilets, for someone with heart issues it was all very assuring.We have been before on a lunchtime and the food was just as good as the evening meal.I can highly recommend this great little pub for a great meal.

Rude staff, no customer care and too strict re COVID rules. Felt more like boot camp. Needs to try and be safe but pleasant too.

It’s a cosy environment. I always feel relaxed here: Good value for money. Hot & delicious food. My favourite is the lasagne.

We visited here on a Sunday and was extremely disappointed with the Sunday Lunch. The food did not seem as though it was freshly home made but furthermore the attitude of the landlord was extremely offensive - will not be visiting again or recommending

The pub has changed Hands, for the better I must add.The atmosphere was very welcoming no the staff were very attentive, but not overly attentive. The food was good,with a good choice, the menu was varied and catered for all needs. We will definitely be going back.

I should have gone with my usual choice and had fish & chips but decided to have a change. Bad mistake! Apart from the battered prawns which were absolutely gorgeous the rest of the platter could have come from any supermarket prepackaged, was really bland and even looked unappetising on the plate. Choice of desserts wasn’t too inspiring either. Such a shame because it really is a nice place, lovely staff, nice ambience. Will stick to their gorgeous fish & chips in future.

This was the second New Year’s Eve visit for a group of four and we will be back next year. Excellent food and service with a fantastic atmosphere and mega firework display.

Have past this place many timesDecided to call in during the Christmas holiday. We were very imprested. Lovely food and a decent potion size. My wife and I had a main meal. A pudding and a pint of lager each. The bill came to £38 which we that was very reasonable.Will definitely return.

We have been eating out at the Brown Horse for three years or more now. The food and service is consistently good and Josey and Shaun, the proprietors are lovely. Cannot recommend highly enough.

This pub is quite a distance for us buts is near our son and it’s their local.the food is deli course have taken my daughter and son in law from London and we are going again on Sunday..Never had a bad meal yet.You will have to book at popular time’s but it’s well worth a visit.I love the pie daughter in la law always has the fish

Called in for a meal on way home, we were told was a table for two in a corner of the restaurant, only another 4 people in the pub so waited for attention, nobody came so i went to ask for menus and order 2 drinks. Chap behind the bar snapped “ will be over soon, i cant do two jobs at once” as he was about to change a barrel. I asked if i had offended him and he snapped, No, i’m just busy ? Waited further but nobody asked for food order and no drinks. We stood up to leave and go elsewhere and he said he was about to take our order (15 minutes from arriving to a near empty pub.) i told him he was unbelievable and we went to a nearby pub restaurant as there are quite a few with better service. We have heard from friends that the food was ok but service patchy. Never again unless there is a change in front of house personnel with manners.....

Met up with some friends for lunch. Great food, lovely warm atmosphere and a very quirky place. Would recommend. The raspberry mousse dessert was fabulous.

Food was ok but disappointed while in Wc to see young lad in black polo who appeared to be working there collecting glasses and delivering non alcoholic drinks go into the toilet cubicle and leave without washing his hands. Pretty basic stuff. Thought about not posting this review as staff seemed very pleasant otherwise but needs to be addressed

Very good value Sunday lunch. Although the usual range of Sunday roasts were on offer we chose from the standard menu, which has a wide ranging choice including many pub favourites. The starters were excellent especially deep-fried curried cauliflower and bacon, brie and black pudding. Ample portions of vegetables offered with main course makes a pleasing change from frequently skimpy restaurant portions. The staff were all very good, attentive and efficient. A hair's breadth from five stars but the main courses lacked finesse, which may be understandable considering the price but the rump steak was tough, it wasn't evenly cooked and the fat had not been rendered so it was really chewy.

The meal was enjoyable and the service good. The steak and mushroom pie was tasty and the vegetables fresh and plentiful. The chef might like to consider providing more gluten-free options.

.First and last visit . Poor quality lamb , looked and tasted like boil in a bag meat , roast potatoes were deep fried , frozen yorkshires , bland over cooked vegetables. Having read past reviews I expected better

Quality of food not as good thought they had got a new chef was disappointed chips was very greasy chicken gougon s greasy the rump steak looked like a black piece of liver and the wait for the starter took 55 mins won't be rushing back

The Brown Horse at Coley is always excellent. Pleasant staff and delicious food. We went as a party of 10, all had different things but all said they were delicious. I’ve been at lunch times and evenings, and it’s just as good on each occasion.

Back when a night out was 10 pounds , and a taxi was a luxury not a mode of transport, the Brown Horse was a regular friday evening haunt.

This had a great atmosphere inside a great outdoor area. Food was fantastic! Service top notch. You should pay it a visit if you're in the area.

I am giving a review of one as from my experience you don't arrive at a bar with a server behind it doing something else (no one else waiting) and be told there were no tables free and not to be told with a smile and something like "I am sorry, we are booked up but we are free next week so can I interest you with a menu or booking for another date". The way to run a place ( and I confess the place is successful in my opinion) is to be cheerful and show a bit of interest even if you are booked up.

Quirky interior with loads of comic sayings about wine and drinking. Interesting to just sit and gaze around but the food was also excellent, with good menu and great service. Good range of beers, too.

Had to wait as food freshly prepared and the place was extremely busy on a Wednesday lunchtime so booking is recommended indeed essential I think. Food was well prepared and tasty.

Called in on a Saturday evening without a booking, they were really accommodating and we got a lovely table, they were busy and full. The service was so good and staff attentive. Food was brilliant so much of it and good quality. We ordered a couple of drinks and two main courses which were plentiful. Great value for money! They could charge more and the clients would still be happy. Quirky deco and a homely feel. Would definitely recommend.

I like the quirky feel of this pub, so many treasures which flow into the beer garden at the back. Excellent choice of food, we had the halumi burger and gammon & egg both with chips and salad which were delicious. The staff were also excellent couldn't do enough for you, would definitely recommend and hopefully will be back soon.

Used to go here a while ago when it was very good but since then it has had a difficult time new owners and then closed down for a while, however these new owners have got it back to its excellent best we had sea bass, steak, and two pork loins every body enjoyed them and pleased to say we will be back to going regularly

Called today with friends we've been before but our it was our friends first visit.

Went for lunch with my brother to-day and was extremely impressed with the food and choices. We chose from the lunch deal, 2 main meals for £15 (good selection to choose from) my brother had the steak and mushroom pie and I had the cheese, onion and potato pie. I had a side salad which was refreshingly good, not just a bunch of leaves a real fresh side salad. We had a side of onion rings and chips with both. It was a real pleasure to eat well prepared hot food and I will definitely be going back. The staff were friendly and service excellent.

On Sunday 12th May we decided to pop in for Sunday lunch again. We arrived at around 2.30pm and was delighted we could get a table as we hadn't pre booked. The last time we tried it was extremely busy so we couldn't get a table . We where promptly shown a good table overlooking the beer garden.Which I must say was like an Aladdin's cave. The ammount of different artifacts on display was truly awesome would keep the kids busy just counting them all. My partner ordered the steak pie and myself the roast beef Sunday lunch.Both meals were excellent and hot tasty and fresh . The only problem could I leave room for desert cause I fancied the toffee cheese cake. I just about managed it and again it was very good.. So a well run and great place to eat.On this visit a well deserved 5 stars.

We arrived a bit early and were shown straight to our table. The menu was varied and extensive but we went for the steak deal of two steaks and a bottle of wine for £30 . We ordered rump and sirloin all cooked perfectly as ordered and the accompanying salad and sauce were excellent. We were not rushed and enjoyed the warm atmosphere created in this little gem. We will be back.

What a horrible man (and I use the word man loosely) We went to sit in the widely advertised beer garden and after we got out there a male followed me and told me in an aggressive manner that the beer garden was shut, despite the door to it being open. I apologised and said sorry I didn’t see a sign and he said very close to me, there isn’t one I’ve just told you now!!! Awful service, avoid if you want a relaxing meal / drink.

Driving past this looks like a basic pub, until you approach the car park and see the unique garden and the alligator outside the front door, then its like walking into an Aladidns cave, full of charm and interesting beautiful decorations.

Booked for Mother’s Day and my mums birthday, same day. The afternoon had a lovely relaxed feeling, nice large table, service, food and drinks were all fantastic. Many thanks to the Brown Horse staff for making our Mother’s Day and my mums birthday so special.

We popped into the Brown Horse for a quick drink - 2 hours later we left having had a great meal. We had stumbled across Steak Night Thursdays . Great value for money but even more impressive was the quality of the food- service was attentive but not intrusive - we will certainly be back.

What a great find, my buddy who cycles stopped for a pint one rainy Wednesday night and said let's try this place for food one Saturday so we did and so glad we did. The beers are kept so well and let me tell you that is a dying art stunning real ales along with every gin known to the gin fraternity great choice.

My wife and a couple of her girlfriends visited The Brown Horse recently and praised the place for the lovely menu and great value.

Visited last Sunday whilst passing through back to Leeds. As pub and restaurant owners ourselves we were craving a traditional Sunday pub lunch, not chain, swanky or freezer to fryer, just good wholesome pub food that’s loved. 100% what we got. Lovely and warm, busy but calm and controlled where you can tell the owners crack the whip and have traditional values. We were created by who I presume was the landlady. They didn’t have a free table but offered us the bar table which we accepted. Our menus were presented promptly and drink order taken. Food arrived quickly and piping hot. Beautiful fish cakes. Pork chops, and then of course a good old pudding. For two of us, 3 courses and a round of drinks it can to £48 - impressed. Haven’t stopped talking about how lovely it was. Difficult to find a gem around Leeds. We’ll be back!

My mum used to go to the Brown Horse when she was younger unfortunately she is no longer with us but with her birthday being on the 21st December what better way to celebrate her special day and we were not let down the food was lovely. The service was excellent and the atmosphere. I would certainly recommend this pub.

Group of 4 ladies went for the first last night. We were not disappointed. Warm and cosy. Lovely friendly staff. The food was excellent.

Haven't eaten here for 3 months but decided to go for our anniversary so glad we did food as usual was excellent ambience lovely would definitely recommend this place.

We have been to the brown horse on many occasions, beautiful decor owner has great taste. Lovely in summer with quirky beer garden and gorgoues in winter, warm and cosy. Food is amazing and has never let us down staff and owners proffesional and polite 10 out of 10.

I have been before for food and it was below average but this is not about the food. It's about the how the treated me pregnant wife, we were driving past and she was desperate toilet. We pulled into the empty car park and my wife went inside to ask to use there facilities. The young man behind the bar said it wasn't up to him if she was allowed to use the facilities he would have to ask the manager. But then he just stood there talking, so she had to ask him, if he could call the manager please as she was desperate. The manager shouted up from the cellar to the young man who then said "that it isn't a public house so no!" So she left and was upset. So we drove to 22 bar and smokehouse that was were more than happy to let my pregnant wife use there facilities.

I called in for some food and drinks with my partner and I was appalled when we were served by a very nasty and rude woman, who had no customer service skills at all! We later came to know she was the owner, unbelievable how someone like that is running a business which relies heavily on customer service! Luckily we ordered our drinks first and never ordered any food, as we realised we would not get the level of service we expect from a pub/restaurant in the Northowram vicinity. Im sure you would get a better service from a pub in Mixenden!

Been a few time's and it's a great pub, with extremely friendly and welcoming staff. Great fixtures and fittings and then the food is amazing. Freshly cooked and a superb choice. I can't praise the place enough!

We called into the Brown Horse on a Wednesday evening for a mid week treat as it was my birthday. I chose the salmon from the specials board and requested the sauce to be served on the side which wasn’t a problem. They even excluded the cream from the sauce, at their suggestion, after I explained I’m following a diet plan! My partner had the mixed grill which was so big he couldn’t manage it all, but he said it was very tasty. The service here is second to none, extremely attentive and friendly, and the prices are fair too. Another eating establishment that we are lucky to have right on our doorstep.

Ate at the brown horse last night with my wife and two children and what a find heard alot of good things about the place from friends and family and decided to give it a go. Four different meals ordered and all four beautiful from presentation to taste, staff lovely and attentive and the two young waiters very attentive and a credit to the owners, will be back soon.

I dined here recently with friends to celebrate a friend's birthday. The restaurant was busy on a Saturday evening with visitors so advance booking is essential. The menu was extensive and the food was good, plentiful and hot. The range of drinks available was very food.

My wife and I took my mother here for her birthday and we all really enjoyed the food, I had a mixed grill which was delicious and generously sized. It was slightly more expensive than you’d expect to pay in a pub but, again, we all enjoyed the food so you don’t mind paying a bit more. Will definitely be visiting again.

After receiving two missed calls and 2 voicemails from the owner at 2.00am today i felt i needed to update my review from yesterday.

This small traditional English pub is on the main brighouse denholme road with a ample parking spaces . Me and my girl friend went there for our Saturday tea , we had the cheese and cured meat board as a starter which came with chorizo , salami , cured ham , 3 different cheese , salad , grapes and olives . It was enough to fill us without the main course . We both had sirloin steak which were perfectly done to our liking served with excellent home made chips , onion rings , salad , mushrooms and fried tomato. the food was very well presented and tasty , the staff was very helpful and pleasant . I will be happy to go there to try different food of the menu .

We called in for a quick drink on a hot Sunday afternoon. The beer garden was quite full, but it was calm and seemed a relaxing atmosphere. After ordering a drink, we decided we might have, some lunch. Tables were booked later on, but we were offered a table without problem.

A group of 14 friends went here last Thursday evening. Although we waited a while to get served, the food was excellent and the portions large. everyone enjoyed their meal and would recommend this pub.

This is a pub with grub. The bar staff made you feel most welcome. You felt that they really wanted your business and were happy to serve you.

I ordered the goats cheese salad which was lovely, cheese was warm and accompanied with pine nuts my favourite. My partner ordered the fish and chips, it was large and the best he had had for sometime. Lovely white fish with a light batter mushy peas but the best homemade fat chips. We will definitely go back here again.
