British Raj in Dartford

We have been going to the British Raj for many years and have never had a bad meal or service. The food is always hot and always tasty. Service is impeccable even when its busy which seems like always with friendly staff who are always attentive and polite.Honestly no idea where all the negative comments come from about the Raj! Having been to many Indian restaurants over the years this one stands out head and shoulders above them all, highly recommended.

Brilliant birthday meal on Friday. Sam and his team really looked after us. My food was piping hot and spicy and everyone was pleased with their dishes. The restaurant is covid safe some tables have been removed and whilst shut they even installed new lighting and marble bar. I recommend chefs special.

Went to this restaurant tonight for the first time. Wow. Food was amazing and the staff were very professional. They made us feel very welcome. This certainly will be a place to revisit more than once. Beautiful place to eat as well. Air conditioning was so welcome in this heatwave but we didn’t get cold like some places. With the Covid virus still around I was impressed with the clean restaurant, disposable menus, pure white linen and the toilets were immaculate.

Just returned from The British Raj after yet another family birthday event. The staff were spot on as usual and everything worked well with the COVID restrictions . Hopefully won’t be long before we return . Thanks to all the staff

just been back as the lockdown is easing. First off they have taken all the sensible precautions including hand sanitiser as you walk in, 2m between a reduced number of tables, all staff wearing masks, paper single use menus, cutlery only put out once you are seated. This is VERY reassuring that they are taking thinks seriously.I have been to this restaurant many times and it never fails me. I went for completely different selections tonight and was not disappointed. The food is always excellent.The customer service is always first rate and the staff attentive without being in your face. Russel in particular always ensures you receive a warm greeting.Keep up the great work guys, and stay safe.Carl.

We’ve been here a number of times now and the food is always spot on.We tried most of the Indian restaurants in the area but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest.The place is usually busy, which is a good sign but it’s always clean and the staff are really polite and helpful.So if you’re looking for a good Indian restaurant/takeaway-you’ve found it.

Went here to celebrate daughters 21st birthday , we have been eating here for years and have celebrated many occasions here sammy and all his staff are always amazing , welcoming and accommodating nothing is too much trouble , food is always great , special mention for Russel , thanks to all of you x

I’ve walked past this Indian restaurant for years on the way home from work at 6pm. Always looked dark and empty, of course! Too early for customers.Tried it on Monday evening. Staff great, unhurried, food very good, decor pleasant and clean, including the toilets. The ladies were given a red rose each too. Will definitely return.

Excellent entertainment and food on New Year’s Eve. Outstanding service with very friendly staff. We were dancing well into the new year and enjoyed every minute I haven’t got anything bad to say just loved the menu and standard of food

Good food but the service is so slow. Don’t go there if you have anywhere to be straight after dinner as you will not get out there for a least 20 minutes after you’ve asked for the bill know if you are seated at front of the restaurant near the door you’ll get seen to quickly but if your sat at the back it will take forever!

I went with my family and had a set menu for four. Excellent quality and friendly staff. Good service and clean.

Best consistency of any curry house for miles. Never fails to give "kick arse" flavours that leave you most satisfied. Helpful staff combined with superb chefs that serve spiced food with knowledge and integrity. Go for it, you will be surprised and happy with the value too.

First time visit and glad we booked as the restaurant was very busy, its décor could do with some improvement but it was clean and tidy . Very helpful waiter took time to discuss my partner’s food allergies to make sure there were no problems with any of the dishes we ordered. Drinks arrived promptly and we ordered poppadum’s while we waited for the starters. The starters and main courses were very tasty, delivered hot, well presented and very filling. Price wise it was also very reasonable, as we left my partner was given a red rose, a nice touch. We will certainly be back.

We love the Raj. We have used this amazing curry for around 15 years. We have even taken a take away from here to France.

Visited the restaurant for an evening meal and catch up with friends, what excellence service and friendly waiters, food was exceptional and they made us feel very welcome will defiantly will be going again,

10 of us for a meet up decided on a place in the middle. Table was ready but then took time for drinks and poppadoms to arrive. Food order finally taken. We chatted we laughed we got more drinks,we asked about our food about an hour later it arrived. Some luke warm and at the most average tasting. We did get a end of dinner drink and the ladies got a rose but it didn't make up for the food and slow service. Will probably not be going back.

Took over 40 minutes for main course to be served.The rice and meat were as cold as the plain salad that came with it.

Visited the restaurant last night with few of my family and friends for a cabaret night there. It was truly fabulous and everyone enjoyed themselves throughly UNTIL RAJ suddenly arrived and ruined it for everyone. Raj previously worked there a long time ago as a waiter. He got drunk as always and started dancing like a maniac also touching all the women up inappropriately. We couldn’t wait to get out of there.

I really don’t know about the food as they din serve us for an hour and ultimately we had no choice but to leave ... really disappointed by the attitude of waiters as they were least bother to serve us !!! I really cudnt get it wat kinda service they are offering .. kindly treat everyone equal !!!

The Raj never disappoints! Even my missus who doesn't like Spicy food has found her perfect dish! Always good quality food only chicken breast bottles brown stuff! busy always friendly aways a good evening! And fairly priced too!

Since moving to the area 6 months ago, as this place is literally 3 mins walk from our new house we have been here about 6 times! The staff are always very friendly and helpful and the food has always been excellent. I have been here with my partner, I have brought my mum and my dad on separate occasions and taken my friends and all have thoroughly enjoyed their experience here with no complaints. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and the only improvements I would mention is that they redecorate as the interior is a bit old and tired especially the toilets. I noted that recently they have brought new chairs for all the tables and these are lovely and comfortable and a good addition to the restaurant. This restaurant is always busy so it is a good idea to book on a weekend, however whenever we come they have always managed to seat us.

We went here on a Thursday evening, there were a few tables of people,the atmosphere was pleasant with Indian music playing quietly and candles lit on the tables .

Shocking... had a delivery, tikka masala sauce was like a orange korma sauce, naan was undercooked and cold and the pilav rice doesn’t taste of anything. Not worth the money at all. I’ve stopped eating to write this review .. that’s how bad it is

We got a take away and waited 45 minutes. We’d read the google Reviews and were expecting a decent Meal. When it arrived it was... Cold, flavourless and frankly one of the worst curry’s I’ve ever eaten.

We have visited here twice now, once with friends and then once as a couple. The food and service is brilliant and is so reasonable. There are always members of staff walking around so they are always there for help/service when needed. The food is lovely. Russell is brilliant and always makes people laugh by entertaining them at the table etc. Even do takeaway now.

Lovely warm welcome, like walking back in time. Meals come out hot and food is hit and miss. Second time of visiting and my impressions remain the same. This place needs to keep the good and update the bad.

We recently visited here as a family. It was loud I had to shout across the table. I had to ask 10 times for a coke. They forgot my starter then didn’t even apologise. Dropped more plates than asking how our food was.

I have been coming here since I was young and my parents have been going long before that. The staff are all very friendly, welcoming and easy to get along with. The food is always outstanding and the restaurant always has a very relaxing feel allowing for a great meal.

Reservamos una mesa para un cumpleaños amigos a las 7 de la tarde, ya que teníamos un poco con nosotros. Pedimos la comida y las bebidas casi de inmediato. Por 9 o'clock que habíamos tenido no entrantes y el pequeño se había caído dormido antes que ella había ninguna comida. Cancela su comida y eventualmente la nuestra. Hacía frío y estaba en este punto todos habíamos pasado el punto del hambre. No volveremos y muy decepcionante.

visited on 25.03.2017. Have had many meals in this restaurant and have always found the staff friendly and the food great but on this occasion which was my birthday we left wondering if we would return again. Our table was booked for 8.15. Poppadoms were served with a drink and then the wait began. The main course was not served until 9.55 nearly a two hour wait! During this time not one waiter came up to us to apologise and explain why the long wait and surprisingly not one came to our table to see if we wanted more drinks. Not good customer service. I could not fault the food when it did eventually arrive but by which time it was really too late to eat.

The service was brilliant and the food is brilliant too thank u so much a big massive thank u to staff for making my visit a excellent one

Went to to British raj with hubby, daughter, son-in law and niece and hubby who were over from Australia. We all ordered something different and none of us were disappointed. The chicken korma that I ordered was delicious, creamy and not hot spices. The staff were very attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes, which are good sized portions and not too expensive. Good selection of starters, mains and desserts on the menu. At no time did we feel rushed. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Would go again and certainly recommend to others.

Visited on 29/01/17.I've been a frequent visitor over the years and always find the food served of a high standard.The service is very good and the general décor is what you would expect from a contemporary curry hut. The price is reasonable and menu offers a wide range of classic curry dishes as well as specials.My personal favourite dish is the Chicken Pathia. Always delivers and although spicy the lemon makes you just want more.Will be sure to return.

Nice place. Gets busy so remember to book in advance you can walk in but book do you don't risk not getting a table. Service was brilliant. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Chicken tikka masala was lovely. Located across from a nice pub with other pubs down the hill.would go again.

I went there with my wife, for her birthday, was made very welcome by the owner Sam, and his staff, got seated promptly, as we sat down the staff took our drinks order, also asked if we wanted any popadoms, they arrived just a quick as the drinks, then placed our order for our main meals, that arrived after around 15 minutes, the meals were very nice, and the portion size was just right.It was a very pleasant night overhaul, well worth a visit, will be going back there again.

Visit The British Raj with friends. Disappointed with my Chicken Dansak. The Chicken was very dry. The service was good and the starter was okay.

Visited this restaurant on a busy Saturday evening on the 12th of November. We were a group of 6 and had no reservation. The waiters managed to seat us and were friendly and patient to advise and explain dishes. I had the best king prawn vindaloo I've had in years. Spicy but still so many flavours within the heat. Prawns cooked perfectly, not over cooked as they often can be elsewhere. Friendly professional service, great atmosphere and great food at a reasonable price, what more could you want for a family dinner.

Just have to say this Indian has to be the nicest Indian restaurant I have ever been to. The food is always beautiful and the staff are friendly and welcoming (particularly my mate Russell). I honestly don't have a bad word to say about it and couldn't recommend it highly enough. Unfortunately we have moved away from the area and have yet to find a Indian that lives up to the standard of the British Raj. Very sad times :(

We enjoyed our visit here and I had a chicken madras, which was perfectly spiced. It had a very nice flavour & consistency and the chicken tasted fresh. The only negatives were that it was quite dark and dated inside the restaurant and the mushroom rice was a little too greasy

Have been here a few times as I have some good friends in that town and would definitely recommend the sag walla. Yesterday I have a madras ++ and these guys really know their spice! the large ice cold cobras are always kept flowing and it is amazing value for money. If I lived around there I would be in there every other night of the week I think - smashing place!

Yet another family party at the Raj . Couldn't fault the service or the food . Thanks to all the staff and Russel for a friendly atmosphere. Been going here years now for both sit in meals and take outs. Only suggestion to the Raj , get some Magners Cider behind the bar.

A nice meal for each of us. The waiters were efficient. Getting our complicated orders correctly served to their respective diners. I had something not on the menu which was not a problem for the chef. Decent portions, good choice of beers and wine.The ladies got a red rose at the end of the meal, along with a Tia Maria for us all.The coffee is just ordinary coffee, but lots of it, and presented nicely. With free refills.£290.67p for a good meal, with plenty to drink for eleven hungry bikers and their ladies. Not bad at all, for about £27 each.They also do take aways.

It was my last night in England before returning to Qatar and I chose to indulge myself with one of the things I miss most.... A good old fashioned curry and beer with my family. I've been to the Raj loads of times and I was pleased to see that the varied and tasty menu has been maintained and the friendly prompt service still the same. Looking forward to my next visit already!

A party of four service excellent lots of food. Second visit. Starters and main course only still but still £30 perhead. The table next to us finished and there was lots of their food left. I thought we could eat the lot, was I wrong. We weren't over ordering just in my case starter, main and a bread, I couldn't eat everything. Instead of a coffee an alcoholic tia maria digestive was supplied FOC. The women were given an individual rose as we left, a nice touch. The service was attentive and not subservient. They were there when we needed them. It was a busy Friday night and all parties left full, satisfied. One thing the toilets were a bit shabby and there is only one of each causing a wait. Cost £120 for 4 a bit expensive, but nice.

This place has an FSA rating of THREE, which is described as 'Generally Satisfactory' by Bexley Council. (24 June 2015) The Hygiene rating scheme is scored from zero up to a top rating of FIVE. The interior is dated and the walls are grim and desperately in need of at least a re-paint. I have visited this place a number of times over the years, but, I'm afraid standards are dropping quicker than a fat kid on a see-saw. We turned up unannounced but were immediately seated. The Popadoms were not quite as crisp as they could have been and were rather stale. Some of the chutneys were tired and dry.Attracting the attention of the waiter was difficult each time drinks etc. were required, especially considering there were not many diners present.The mens' toilets were really quite grubby. The wall and floor tiles were filthy, and there was little evidence of any recent cleaning. If they can't present a clean toilet that is on view to their customers, one wonders what must the food preparation area be like?The main courses arrived hot and were as expected. I really think this place needs some attention before standards slip further. This would not be my first choice to return to until standards improve. It's a shame, as this place used to be much better.

Top place for having a laugh whilst eating, Russell will make you endlessly smile without stealing your thunder. Food always great but a little tight on portion size. Look out for there special entertainment nights. Really good adult fun.

Been here a few times now. The food is always nice and the staff friendly. You are not rushed to get out and the staff are quite happy to change the menu for you.

Treated my friends to a meal here as a "thank you" for hosting me for a week. Yet again, the food was excellent, the service efficient and friendly (staff with great senses of humour).After the meal we each had a complimentary shot of a Tia Maria and the lady in our group was presented with a rose!Indian food and service at its very best! I cannot commend the place highly enough.

This is my favourite local Indian Restaurant. Not least because I can walk to it but mostly because the team there are lovely. They remember you, are friendly & attentive, make room for you when you haven't booked & the food here is truly delicious.This is not to be missed!

Been to the Raj on several occasions, Found the staff very welcoming they always know you by name, Very helpful in upgrading a meal to your liking. Entertainment nights always busy, Russell,s a character, never had a bad meal/evening good food good service.

Great restaurant, used to eat here all the time when I lived in this area. Visited last week for the first time in few years and the food was stunning. Service great and prices reasonable. Menu is very extensive and the quality of food very high. I've missed having a great curry like this and it brought back many great memories. Great job guys. May it continue

This was a good high street indian meal, staff very helpful. food tasty and well presented. good sized portions. not spectacular but good food at good prices

Came here to celebrate a friends birthday. I ordered a Vegetable dish which was expensive however I thought that the quality of the food would match the price. I however was proved wrong and the dish was bland and did not taste that nice. I felt like the food could be a lot more flavoursome. I ended up eating less than a quarter of the dish. I did speak to the manager who seemed to co operate and say that if I ordered through him then the dish would be better. He agreed with my points and said he will arrange a discount to the bill which I was grateful for and would make me want to return. However when we got the bill no discount was made and the manager said the chef was not happy with the comments and does not feel there should be a discount. This for me has left a bad taste in the mouth and shall not be returning even though the only highlight was that the staff was friendly. I just feel the food could have been better and that the manager should have stuck to his initial word. I was not expecting a big discount, all I wanted to see if the restaurant would listen to the customer and give that level of service however I feel they did not deliver on that. I agree that I could have ordered something else however the principal is that the food was bland and did not taste great.

Four friends dining together in celebration of a birthday. I was taken ill before the meal began with intense chest pains caused by a bad reaction to Oramorph. The staff, especially "Sid" were wonderful.Once recovered, I enjoyed an excellent lamb biryani and vegetable curry, followed by mango kulfi. Avoiding wine for once (!) I enjoyed 3 glasses of chilled, very fresh milk.Meals and drinks for four came to approximately £100 but the friend paying refused to show me the actual bill!

Initially came here for my friends 40th birthday in November & had a lovely, fun time with REALLY friendly efficient service with great food.Have been returning on a regular basis since as we have & in particular my 12yr old son have found it so favourable.Always enjoy the the fiendly recognition, complimentary rose, little liquer drink & choccies at the end of our meals, love the little touches...... Starting delivery service would be amazing!Thanks British Raj team.

We always go to the British Raj as it is without a doubt the best one around and we love it here. There is a lovely atmosphere and the staff are very attentive. Service is always excellent! We have the Butter chicken, chicken korma and tikka masala usually and all are super tasty. The peshwari naan bread is always cooked to perfection too. Is a great restaurant to visit with friends or family! Highly recommended.

Wonderful restaurant despite the dated decor but that just adds to the experience!Food is of a high standard, service can be a little slow at times but only when busy which is most of the time!!Russell and his team always make their guests feel special.Would recommend to all to visit at least once.

I have tried every Indian restaurant in This area, nothing comes close to British raj for quality of food. I usually come here for takeaway, but have also eaten in several times. Excellet service, staff are very attentive. highly recommended...

Have visited here several times and it never disappoints. We wanted a relaxed no rush meal and that's what we got. They are quite happy to let you take your time. Highly recommend. Takeaway service excellent too. Just a shame that they don't do home delivery.

I have used this restaurant a number of times, and have been generally happy with the food and service. The building is rather dated and looks quite scruffy when you look closely. The Food Standards Ratings for this place were quite low for a while and, as of 8/03/2015, is still only a rating of three. This is listed as 'Generally Satisfactory' on the FSA Website.The net curtains in the windows upstairs were quite filthy and the toilets looked like they needed a good clean. With that in mind, I've not been back for a while.

I visit British Raj in Crayford regularly. The food, service and general atmosphere are always very good especially on the weekends where they are very busy. Sayeed will look after your every need just ask for him! My favourite dish is probably Chicken Tikka Dansak extra hot lol. My girlfriend likes the Sag panir which she reckons can't be beaten! The Josh special is also very tasty!

Nice food and lovely people but not flawless. The restaurant is quite dated and could do with an upgrade. On the occasions I have visited I have had long waits for food (restaurant was very busy in fairness) and dishes that were not warm (thermally) enough. That said, the quantities and quality of the dishes are both very good and the staff are polite and friendly. I much prefer the nearby Spice Fusion which is owned by the same people and has relatively recently been refurbished.

We went as a party of four on a Saturday evening. The service was good and the staff were particularly attentive when one of our party tripped on the step on the way to the toilet. This was not very well marked and can be easily missed so beware.The menu is as you would expect with all of the usual British Indian dishes available. The range of specialities was OK. The menu could be helped by a little more explanation of their chefs take on the dishes. They do vary I have found from restaurant to restaurant - particularly in terms of the amount of spice in the dishes.The prices were on the high side of average for what we had. We had three starters, 4 main dishes, 2 rice and 2 bhajis. With a bottle of wine and two pints of beer the price was £92.I can see how it could become people's restaurant if choice but for us it was nothing special. Sorry!

My husband come to the British Raj at least once a month as it's our local curry house. Every time we go else where (even abroad) we are constantly disappointed as we think so highly of this place.The service is spot always good and the wait staff will remember you after your first visit. We've never had a bad meal here but our favourites are the sag paneer, coconut rice and sashlick e bahar (forgive me for incorrect spelling.)Perfect for special occasions, couple and even groups of 4-6. They also sell out seats every year for New Year's Eve as they have special entertainment.

From the outside would never have gone in here.......looks tired and dated and was even more wary that they only had been awarded 3 out of 5 on the Hygiene ratings. Would have probably walked away if hadn't been recommended and was with friends.Place was empty which again was a concern.Ordered poppadoms and main course with sides........highly tasty food - good portion size and good service - couldn't be faulted to be honest and nice for an Indian to serve hot plates for a change.Nice touch with the courtesy Baby Guinness at the end of the meal, and great value at £90 for 4 including 8 pints of lager.Will be back next time in the area.

You just have to visit the British Raj if you are in this area.The staff are so friendly and helpful and always welcome you like a long lost friend. The food is superb, the portions are very generous and the service is first class. Have taken friends here and they now use this palace of taste themselves.

My local restaurant I've been to British Raj hundreds of times. Always a nice evening with friendly staff and tasty food. I particularly suggest the Sagwala for a healthy option

British Raj is consistantly a very good restaurant to dine in. The Service is very efficient and friendly and we are welcomed time and again like family. We order a take away if we are unable to go to the restaurant for dinner and the food is outstanding.

I've been going to the British Raj for almost 2 years now, and it's so good that other Indian restaurants struggle to compete! The food is fantastic, you get personal and friendly service each time, and it's very reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

Visiting my former home town from Australia I was shocked and saddened to see the state of the high street with fast food outlets every other shop. Fancying a curry my wife and I gave the British Raj a try and we were not disappointed. Great food, good service and fantastic value.

I have been coming to the British Raj for well over 10 years. Everytime I have found their food is always of excellent quality, as is there service and value for money and have never had a poor experience or a bad meal.I have also used their excellent take away service. Although you have to collect the from the restaurant, by doing so you get 10% discount, The restaurant has a wonderful, personal, warm and inviting atmosphere. I would thoroughly recommend it!

Its a good size restaurant and was packed on Saturday night, so I was advise you to book. Really good curries, nan breads and vegetable dishes, we had a mixture of dishes and all were very good. Lots of parties and there is a great atmosphere.Good prices too!
