Haven’t eaten here much even though it is local but their Sunday Lunch is fantastic value for money. Generous portions, fresh and tasty with a lovely Yorkshire Pudding and plenty of gravy - couldn’t fault it. Staff were very attentive too.

Start with the positives. Pub has a really good vibe. Wish it was my local. Bar staff extremely friendly. After we had ordered at 1pm one of the staff came to our table to say they had no Moussaka or Tagliatelle. How at 1pm is it still not available on a very limited menu. After waiting a while I asked the gentlemen who was running around if our food was nearly ready. The answer I got was its on its way we are busy. In my opinion on the food side it didn't seem "busy'. Guess they were lucky the large table cancelled. Not much chicken in the Caribean and the chilli looked lacklustre. Hope this was an off day for them and was down to staffing as the pudding was fab and after overcharging me one pudding brought the difference back to my table. Love the honesty.

My son, his wife and one year old baby and I had Sunday lunch at the Bread & Bitter pub, and what an absolute pleasure it was! The premises are light and airy, well furnished, with plenty of room, including outside seating. The menu is simple, straightforward, delicious and great value for money. Service is outstanding, and the beers are incomparable, as one would expect from Castle Rock brewery. Add to this the blessed absence of thrice-accursed piped ‘Muzak’, and our cups runneth over. There were plenty of customers, many of them families like ours, and I can’t think of a better place to bring your nearest and dearest. Another triumph from the outstanding Castle Rock company. They deserve to prosper, and we shall do our bit by eating there as often as we can.

As locals we have been visiting this pub for 8 years because of the friendly service, good choice of drinks and overall great vibe, but our recent meal was highly disappointing. The pizzas were average, the moussaka was stodgy, (I think my 11 year old could make a healthier and tastier version), the Caribbean chicken had a meagre amount of meat with what can only be described as a straight-out-the-jar overly sweet sauce, lacking that Caribbean taste that makes you want to eat more. My partner described his veggie burger as bland, swimming in dense coleslaw. Can management please put some consideration into the menu? Until you do, I wouldn’t recommend eating here, very disappointing.

We came here for lunch with my brother-in-law. The staff were welcoming, the food was exellent, and the selection of beer was astounding. A nice pub with plenty of space, a sheltered outside area and an air conservatory. I just wish it didn't take me three hours to get here from home.

I'd like to thank the staff at Bread and Bitter for the best 40th party I could have wished for. From the time of booking, Ben was so helpful, all the way to the night of the party which was perfect! The venue was just the right size, not too big so it looked empty and not too small to be cramped. The exposed bricks and beams made the room look so attractive and characterful. Everyone commented on how nice the food was (especially the chilli!) And what we loved is that we were advised to order less than the total number of our guests and they were right. There was plenty of food! This was such a nice touch as they could have been out to make more more money from us. We set up our own music and were allowed to have my sons play live too which just made the night for me! Thank you again for a perfect night which meant even more after what we've all been through. Lovely pub with a warm atmosphere and lovely staff. Thank you!

What was once the best pub in the area is now one that I will never return to. We’ve been going there for years and always enjoyed the food, the beer and the atmosphere. The staff have always been great. Things seem very different now, there are some new staff in there, they are brilliant. Really welcoming, polite and ensure you have everything you need. A member of the original crew was truly foul to us which is why will will never set foot in the place again.

Went with our daughter on Sunday for lunch and chose the roast options, lamb for me and beef for the other two. Place has lovely, friendly vibe about and obviously gets very busy on Sundays so need to book table in advance. Because it is so busy, you may have to wait a while for food after ordering, but we’ll worth the wait. Good portions, food all nicely cooked and tasty. Staff are great and very helpful with good customer service skills. We were there at peak time and missed our turn for service but the staff spotted that and offered us free dessert to compensate. Nice touch but not really necessary as we were chatting anyway and hadn’t noticed the wait. Would highly recommend for Sunday lunch. Not eaten there during the week but our daughter sings it’s praises. Oh, yes, great choice of cask ales too. What is there not to like about the place!!! Dogs and kids welcome too. Great value for money.

Aparentemente nuestra sopa aún no estaba lista.

Over the years the food in this pub has gone downhill. I recently had lunch; ‘sausage caramelised Sherwood reserve onion sandwich, served on white bloomer bread and salad at £6.95’. This was actually really disappointing....the bread was sliced bread straight from a ‘processed loaf of bread’ (£1 at the most, you know the type I mean) call it what you like but it was no bloomer from a bakery and for some reason the sandwich was loaded with rocket leaves; not sure what the thinking was there but it certainly wasn’t advertised! That all said it also took 30 mins to arrive in a near empty pub and after it was served to the table nobody ever came and asked if all was ok. Don’t get me wrong it was edible but it be a while before I waste £6.95 on food in the B & B again ☹️

I have been coming to the b&b; for many years and always enjoyed their curry night, in fact, I always enjoyed all the food on offer. The quality of the food has noticeably declined in recent years, the menu never changes and they frequently sell out of popular meals such as fish and chips. The curry night used to be fantastic value for money, large portions with popadoms and 3 chutneys, bhajis and pakoras. Last night the chicken makhani was gone by 7:30 replaced by a disappointing chicken korma - with 5 small pieces of chicken in. Not value for money at all. No sides on offer, just popadoms with a very small pot of very chunky mango chutney.

Our son lives in north Nottingham and we seem to keep returning to the B&B; because it gets the basics right - good friendly atmosphere, good food and good drink (excellent cask ale with plenty of choice). It is snuck away down a drive just to the side of two other busy pubs (mainly youngsters and TV watchers from what I can make out.) The B&B; is usually quite busy but not overly so during the week so you can usually find a table. The menu is simple but quite varied - we had Beef Stefado (from the Specials board) and Carribean Chicken. Both very tasty and not too pricey either. If you are anywhere near Mapperley Top this Castle Rock pub is well worth a visit - highly recommended.

Sorry to say that the bar staff let us down last night. Very unfriendly attitude from one in particular - he was not aware of who had been waiting longest and there were only two of us. He then responded to anything I said with "what?". General arrogance and indifference. When I asked for a bottle of white Rioja, he acted like this was a ridiculous request. I then asked to see the wine list and was handed a folder with mainly empty sleeves and a couple of sheets listing red and rose wines. I couldn't see anything that caught my eye and asked if the selection of wines had reduced recently. Similar indifferent response that the list had been the same for a long time. I gave up at this point and said I would wait for the person I was meeting and decide together then. She went to the bar and was handed the same wine list and she noticed that there were no white wines at all. Apparently this sheet was missing. We decided to have a glass rather than a bottle and then moved to the Plainsman where we had a bottle of French white wine and were served with a smile. Not difficult guys

I will put positives first, looked good inside and staff were initially friendly, it is dog friendly inside too. Ordered lunch for two, wasn't told it would be a 30 minute wait although it was quiet. My veggie sausage, mash and peas arrived , no apology for wait, looked great , but as soon as i caught the smell I knew it wasn't veggie and tbh putting down pig sausage in front of a lifelong veggie isn't very nice. My daughter's meal was good she said , but we couldn't wait for them to re-cook me veggie sausage and I didn't trust that they wouldn't just put them on to the same plate with the accompanying mash and peas as the staff hadn't seemed to realise how much of a serious issue it was for me. Staff member went to get my refund but then manager - I think ,came along and it all had to be explained again, as staff member said I needed a refund because of the wait which wasn't the whole story. No one actually said sorry. Would never go there again.

Nice pub on Mapperley Plains. Small car park, but on street parking available and some car parks nearby. A real ale pub, with plenty of choices. Dog friendly, however, some of the dogs weren't friendly!!! One guy literally lifting his aggressive small dog off the ground by its lead, which slipped the harness off and his friend had to jump on the dog to grab it, getting bitten on his hand in the process! This wasn't the only unfriendly pooch too!! I wish owners of these dogs would be considerate to other people, and other dogs!! If your dog is aggressive, don't bring it!!!!! Food was good and freshly cooked. Good quality. We both had the burgers. Only one criticism, too much chorizo in it that masked the flavours of the beef etc. Other than that. It was ok. Good, but not overly value for money, side of onion rings. Would visit again, but give the dogs a wider berth!!!

I was travelling on my own on business. The pub is tucked away in a side road. Really good home made pizza and nice wines. A lovely smiley waitress.

Went on two nights over the Easter weekend.have been before but a few years ago. What I like about this pub is it is a traditional old fashioned drinking establishment no airs and graces Massive choice of ales and lagers and food too.Very reasonably priced and a great atmosphere we had a great time.

Good pub with nice menu of pub classics and a few more interesting bits. Great beer. But the food took ages to come and they didn't seem that busy. Also the pizza was a bit on the well done side for my taste.

The Bread and Bitter had always had a good atmosphere, and serves nice beers, but their food has dropped in quality, if not standard. For £10 I got two medium sized sausages and a small square of dauphinoise potato, plus a few steamed vegetables. Oh, we also waited an hour for the pleasure of having it. So, good place for a drink, don't buy any food...

We decided to venture out for a mid evening meal, specifically selecting this venue. I liked the appropriate lighting and tranquil atmosphere, greeted with a pleasant smile from the bar personnel. She provided excellent customer care with good knowledge of the real ales and products from the food menu. Good value for money for a curry night promotion, the food was excellent, partner liked the sausage dauphinois and thanks for spicing up the beef madras for me, a great touch to good customer service. Cheers !!

Myself and friend went here for lunch today and the food was excellent. The staff are very friendly and are pleased to serve you. I had the Beef Stew which was really tasty and the meat was really tender. The veg were well cooked and seasoned for flavour. The chef makes a real effort here - my friend had the Caribbean Chicken which she enjoyed as well. I think the quality of the food here surpasses the high standards that you get in the other local Castle Rock pubs in Nottingham. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning here.

We arrived pretty late in the afternoon for a Sunday roast. However options were available. My girlfriend had braised chicken and I went for the braised lamb. Both meals were superb. We found the meats were tender and succulent pan fried veg, roast potatoes and jus were excellent. Bar service was welcoming perfect after a Sunday afternoon walk. Will definitely recommend and return. Thank you very much.

As always, made to feel welcome when we arrived.Good choice of beers and lagers, offered tasters when not sure which to go for. Also do a taster tray if you can't decide.Allow dogs in the bar area but not in the food area. Also hear they do a beer festival which is meant to be good!

Visited this very busy Pub for Drinks before an evening Meal elsewhere. Great selection of Ales, friendly Staff, and a dog friendly Pub, there were at least half a dozen there when we visited around 6pm, great, wish I didn't live 80 miles away.

Been here once before and we were really surprised at how good the food was on the day so we thought we would try it again but unfortunately it was a bit of a let down. I ordered the gammon cooked in cider with poached eggs ,pineapple and homemade chips. When it arrived it was 3 thin slices of cold ham. It looked pretty as a picture,, I was expecting gammon steak , I got cold ham so it was a let down, especially as the ham was no better than the local deli.my wife had the fish and chips but we both said it was no where as good as the first time we visited. Good range of beers though and dog friendly. Staff are pleasant.

Been using BB since it opened. Lately things have changed and not for the better. Menu not good and the size of potions is very small , 6 chips what's that all about. . We are going for a meal Xmas eve afternoon our family tredition, hopefully we will be happy with it if not our feet will do the walking it will be our last vist. Such a shame been a great pub and good ales. Also the waitress had long hair that she kept messing with rather off putting.

Got the Ales selection as a Castle Rock, but just a very standard place. One of those places you wake up, and if you only remember a few bars from the night before, here isn't one of them. It's okay don't get me wrong, but it's not great.

Visited here after local bonfire night wouldnt allow anymore people in??!!???!! Excellent choice of local and countrywide ales/beers/lagers. Proper pub style interior, lots of places to sit, easy to get served. I would highly recommend this pub if your an ale drinker or 30+ years of age. You might easily miss it though as its tucked down the side of The Woodthorpe Top.
