Bluebell Inn in Cardiff

No food being served. Asked barman if they were serving food,he said that he didn't know!!!!! Half pub unlit. Tv in bar on with sound blaring. Customers shouting at each other not chatting. People came in for food,and left immediately when told no food service. Tables full of debris,and dirty glasses. All in all,a very unhappy experience. Had one drink,and left for "The Fox and Hounds." Where we had a great time.

Excellent Sunday lunch and good value, £12.95 for one course, £16.95 and £20.95 represents excellent value when the food is this good and fresh. Couldn't find room for pudding but everything including the service and drinks which were good value were excellent too. Would have been 5 stars had plates been warmer

First visit here. Really nice atmosphere and very attentive staff. The food was nothing short of incredible in regards to presentation and flavour and cannot wait until my next visit.

What a lovely little pub and restaurant! Popped in for lunch and was served by Sue - who although rushed off her feet - provided us with the most friendly welcome and fantastic service . She is so enthusiastic about the food and upcoming special nights that we ended up booking for their special evening on beaujolais day . Good selection of home cooked food - very well presented and all very tasty . Will definitely go back - wish I lived that side of Cardiff and it was my local !

Went for Sunday Lunch .. lovely staff no fault there However I was disappointed with the Sunday lunch !! First of all the 6 of us had the beef It’s was one thick slice & very well cooked also very tender I think probably cooked in a slow cooker . The mish mash of vegetables were very Al dente & stir fried altogether in oil the red cabbage dyed the white cauliflower pink which wasn’t very appetising looking But the “ Roast”’? potatoes (always the best part of a Sunday roast ) were boiled potatoes dropped into a deep fat fryer !! altogether a very disappointing Sunday Roast !! but potentially , it could be good if the chef changed some of his cooking techniques !!

I arrived and was surprised by friends, family and ex work mates being there , everyone was dressed in 70,S outfits, including me as Freddie Mercury, we were in the Gin bar, great place for a get together , after a couple of hours we went into the main pub where there was a disco playing 70,S music , Paul was the DJ and was brilliant, we danced and drank all night it was a fantastic evening, we are booked up for the 80,S night in September and the Freddie Mercury night in December

I was lucky enough to enjoy a meal here with my aunt and my parents who live locally. I started with the duck, followed by the pork and then the passionfruit parfait The starter was smoked duck with pea shoot salad and plum gel and that's exactly what you got, no more, no less, so you don't need to worry about how things are done or what else might be on the plate. The duck was cooked perfectly and I mean you can look up pictures on how you are meant to cook duck and that's exactly what I had, just a dash of pink in the middle so it's tender and tasty but not rare. The smoke level was also perfect for me, a little bit more smokey than smoked bacon and other smoked foods, so that you get a proper smokey taste, but not so much that you feel like you're eating a bonfire. The main was the belly pork which was incredibly tender, full of flavor and just the right size, along with some very tasty and crispy potato. I would have gone for just a splash more sauce but that might be a personal preference The main was the passionfruit parfait, which was nice and tangy and kept simple, as desserts should be. I'd have served it in a bowl rather than on slate, because once it starts to melt it moves around a little and makes it hard to get at, but that's a very small thing and didn't effect the enjoyment of the meal. The service is always great, so that met expectations, but the food is always a bit of an adventure because it's consistently high quality, but you're never certain what to expect because they like to experiment and throw in a few curve balls to keep things interesting. Which is why this is one our go to place for any special occasions. So make sure to visit, but remember that it may look like a nice old pub, but you're getting restaurant quality food, not Pie and Mash

Had a fabulous afternoon/ evening at their first and hopefully not their last music festival . Great atmosphere and superb bands . The staff were amazing, as was the street food ! Huge thanks to Nikki and her team for pulling off such a great event, all within walking distance of home .

We had an intimate wedding reception for friends and family here at The Church Inn where they dressed the main restaurant area magnificently. Nikki was so helpful in the organising and provided everything that we asked for and more! We have found the hospitality and service to be of a very high standard. If you’re looking for a pub with a restaurant with quality food, friendly staff, lovely surroundings and atmosphere, then look no further! The food is cooked from fresh scratch by the chefs to a very high standard. The presentation is incredible! There’s a well stocked bar with a huge selection of gins 🍸, beers and larger’s. So something for everyone’s taste. This is really one place you should visit, as I’m sure you’ll be booking again!

This is the first time I’ve visited the Church Inn which used to be the BlueBell. My friends had visited a number of times before and had raved about the food and atmosphere. We visited for a friend’s birthday, the food was excellent, obviously fresh and not your usual microwave rubbish. Everything was well presented and tasty. Our Waitress Mia was very attentive along with the owner Nikki who made sure we had a great experience. To cap it all it was quiz night, this was run by the landlord and not usually being one for a quiz paid yet £1 and played I have to say we had a brilliant time, the questions were all middle of the road meaning most were achievable. It was well worth making the trip from Penarth and will definitely be returning

I went to the church inn as I was staying at the premier inn down the road, this was a chain beefeater and I wanted something different. I was greeted by a lovely waitress who sat me down the menu was not that big as she informed me that all the food was cooked by the chef from scratch. On her recommendation I choose the homemade faggots. I have to say they were the best I’ve tasted, the chef walked through the restaurant and I called her over for a chat she was extremely approachable and spent time with me. I am returning to the area for holidays in the summer with my wife and child land will definitely be calling back

My husband and I visited the restaurant for the 3rd time this weekend for Sunday lunch. Every time we have been the food quality has been outstanding with fresh ingredients and plenty for both of us. There is a great choice of meats which are obviously bought from good suppliers I had the beef and my husband had the vegetarian option the beef was melt in your mouth and the vegetables were not your usual it was a lovely change to have a choice. The Yorkshire puds were clearly homemade as was the tasty gravy. The staff were attentive to us and nothing was too much trouble. We have visited other pubs in the area but the Church Inn far surpasses anything in the area for quality, friendliness and value We are booked in for next Sunday and will be staying for the Duo who the landlady informs me are brilliant and well worth listening to. I don’t drink but my husband had the Guinness which he said was one of the best pints he’s tasted. Thank you to all the staff in particular Callia who served us.

We visited the church inn on Saturday September 25th for lunch. Excellent food and service. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Upgraded to a high standard, would highly recommend. We will definitely go back.

Another lovely evening meal. German theme night so staff dressed up and beer in steins, great fun, usual varied and tempting menu, great presentation, great taste, generous portions, fair prices. Overall an excellent experience. We’re definitely going back again.

We have just returned home after a lovely meal in The Church Inn.(formerly Bluebell Inn). The staff were very friendly and made our dining experience enjoyable. Kasey our waitress was chatty and helpful. Making our dining experience happy. Although the menu isn’t very big the food was excellent.we both had Pan fried Cod,Chips ,Mushy peas and Tartare sauce. To be honest the fish was cooked to perfection. Compliments to all the Staff for making our meal so enjoyable. We will be back.

Excellent evening meals, very nicely presented, hot and tasty. The beetroot and goats’ cheese starter was just so good I’d have had it again for dessert. Such a massive improvement on the rather sad Bluebell/Blue Bell.

The best roast dinner out you can get! Top quality and everything tasted amazing and was perfectly seasoned. The pork belly roast was amazing, beef lush and chicken moist. Favourite place to go out for a roast and wouldn’t go anywhere else after trying this one. Well done Nicola and staff were friendly and helpful.

Spent a very pleasant Saturday afternoon here in this the former Bluebell Inn an establishment I have not visited in probably over 30 year when it was just a pub. It was our youngest son’s 35th birthday lunch celebration that we shared with family and friends. We occupied the outside area that sits undercover in a slightly elevated area on the car park end of the building that on this occasion we shared with another family but there was plenty of room for many more people. Everyone got on very well and the grandchildren soon played with the other party’s children, our son recognised one of this other party and soon was chatting away to him.Our meals were pre-ordered in advance and were soon being served by very a pleasant young lady where nothing was to much trouble for her. She was later joined by another young lady and an older lady all did a smashing job running back and for with drinks orders and requests for sauces etc to accompany the meals. Starters were served and the goat’s cheese and beetroot served on a toasted brioch bun was outstanding. All of us commented on the quality and presentation of the fare being served. Steaks were perfectly cooked to order with chips being served alongside in little wire baskets was a nice touch. Myself I had the lasagne that came in a beef ragu style sauce unlike the usual minced beef served in run of the mill other places, sprinkled with essential Parmesan (for me) and accompanied with salad it was delicious. Portions were excellent in size, others in our party had lamb, chicken, and fish, with the children having burgers of course l.o.l. Creme brûlée, chocolate mousse, banana parfait, and ice creams for the children completed an excellent meal. I will certainly recommend this establishment to other family members and friends and although we don’t eat out as regular as we used to I can see us making a few more future visits here.

We have had an absolutely lovely afternoon today for my partners birthday. The staff were so accommodating and polite. The landlady couldn’t do enough for us and literally every request we made was accommodated. The atmosphere was amazing there & even family members from the other side of cardiff from llandaff who said how amazing it wa s there & they couldn’t wait to return for the beautiful food & atmosphere. The owners have done an an amazing job in the last 12 months turning it around & it’s definitely a place to try & once you have been there you will always return. The food is fantastic it’s not a pub meal it’s more a resteraunt quality, absolutely outstanding xx

Been to a few meals here and never been disappointed. Landlady is a perfect host and nothing is to much trouble for Amy of the staff. I would highly recommend the church inn for both a quiet drink in the outside area or a meal, the food is great and if you have any complaints they ate dealt with straight away.

Went for a few drinks with friends last night and was a bit taken aback to be met by a very angry landlady. One of my friends rolled a cigarette at the table which she seemed very offended over and rudely told us to do that outside (all while her friends at her table were doing the same thing!). She questioned another of my friends multiple times as to why he was not wearing a mask knowing full well that he has a condition that makes him unable to wear one. The tipping point for her seemed to be when we were having a laugh and singing a little bit (as many other people in the pub including her staff members were) and she told us to get out - to put it politely! We had obscenities yelled at us and were even at one point called scum!!! We regularly drink in many of the pubs in the village and have never had a problem with any of the staff or owners until last night. We were severely disappointed as we had heard good reviews about this place but from our experience last night we will not be returning.

So we haven’t been here since it changed management but you can clearly see the Nicola and Paul have put there all into this venture the whole pub has had a revamp and outside is as good as the inside .the food was one of the best meals I’ve had out in a long time I chose the belly pork ( something I wouldn’t normally go for but it was stunning full of flavour ) and my husband had the cod which he enjoyed . Great selection of drinks and the atmosphere is good too so friendly and welcoming we will be using the pub regularly keep up the good work guys (waitress and waiters were fab quick polite service)

The management have put in a lot of blood, sweat & Tears into revamping this place right from the decor to its clientele. The pubs formerly troublesome reputation as the Bluebell should now be a thing of the distant past and it's now s lovely place to spend time. The staff and management are all very friendly, attentive and efficient and it's clear that they've actually eaten the food when they make recommendations. There's a great choice of beers & spirits (ESP gin in the lovely outdoor gin bar). The chef was the star of the show however. The food was simply gorgeous, easily restaurant standard (and a good one at that). Freshly made, very tasty and beautifully presented - this chef obviously cares and it shows. Very reasonable prices too. This was our first visit and my wife& I loved it so much we've booked to go back fir Sunday lunch with my parents tomorrow and we cannot wait.

Went to old blue bell for lunch now the church in lovely inside they made lovely effort with place only thing food was a let down the beef was lovely but lamb was like pulled pork all tringi the veg was in a bowl like a stir fry and not very nice at all the Yorkshire pudding were so burnt it was black that was all 5 of ours the belly pork was under cooked it was still fatty some roast potatoes were burnt or under cooked they only good thing was the gravy I get chefs like to try new ways for luches but if 5 off us are uhappy with a meal then there's somthing wrong and so many people don't like one veg so u have to pick out what u like then thats not good

I've visited the church inn several times recently with different sized groups and have been very impressed! The food is amazing, the braised beef lasagne was the best lasagne I've ever had and the chips are insanely good. The burgers and the chocolate and rose mouse are very tasty too, can't wait to try more of the menu. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the outdoor seating area is lovely. Thank You!

Really good food which we both enjoyed, she reckoned it was the best risotto she’d ever had. Desserts very tasty and beautifully presented. Service a touch slow initially but overall fine. Very good food and a very decent price at £50ish for two with a bottle of wine.

Hard to rate the quality of the food higher. The chef and kitchen staff provide a simple (not fussy) menu. That’s not to say it’s basic, far from it, good quality dishes, prepared with fresh ingredients, and cooked to a high standard. The external dining areas, though obviously prompted by Covid restrictions, have been well thought out and built, they will be a good addition to the premises through the summer months. Friendly and unpretentious staff, always helpful and want you to feel relaxed and comfortable. All in all great food, and a menu to suit all pallets, and very reasonably priced. Hopefully this will continue to grow and build on its strengths.

I live fairly nearby but had never visited under the previous ownership. I noticed the name change last year and we decided to give it a try at lunchtime (one perk of working from home). We had a fantastic meal for a really reasonable price. We've been back again since the reopening this year in the new covered outdoor area and had another great meal. Would thoroughly recommend.

Please book ahead. Excellent lunch of the Beefburger and Chilli Chicken, Desserts, Wine and Coffee for three .. £60 ,well worth it. The staff are excellent

3 of us went for a meal at 5 oclock. The service was really good. All 3 meals served hot and very quickly. Staff very polite and helpful, would recommend the food, and 10 out of 10 for the staff.

Have had Sunday lunch here on many occasions and it has always been very tasty with plenty of choice both in meats and vegetables and all piping hot. The staff are lovely especially to my little grandaughter who is non-verbal.

Apareció en la campana azul en nuestro viaje a casa. 1 hora de la calle yendo allí. Al entrar se sintió amable. Nos mostraron el comedor y pedimos 3 comidas diferentes. Todos llegaron rápidamente bien cocidos y calientes. Los precios eran razonables. Teníamos un menú a la parrilla. Pero un domingo puedes reservar un asador. Sin duda volveremos.

Visité hoy aquí para almorzar, no me puedo quejar del servicio. Pequeño menú con mucha variedad, las porciones son de buen tamaño. Opté por cerdo desmenuzado con salsa de queso azul, Paul tenía el bistec que era tierno y sabroso. Simplemente no me puedo quejar, el chef cantante está atento y ofrece excelentes comidas. Realmente lo disfruté y volveré a visitar pronto

Nothing offered for Mother's Day,it wsnt even acknowledged! 4 of us eating,due to health reasons for myself I take an age to eat,the red/dark haired lady came over+ cleared the plates whilst I was still eating!! We were gobsmacked,I carried on eating whilst we were chatting,she came over again to ask if we were going to be having pudding! There was a big table near us,she said I need to get rid of them as we have people waiting When I booked our table at no point was I told there would be a 'time limit'. She made me feel very uncomfortable +I asked if she had a container for my food,she quickly came back with one! We then left the table+had a lovely time in the bar area playing darts .lovely food,really bad waitress,rolling her eyes,not the best,needs more training

Got here quite late and they had just stopped serving food. They kindly rustled up a Roast Turkey with jusr about everything on the plate. It was lovely and really great value.

We visited the bluebell inn for Mother’s Day lunch was a 2 course carvery good choice of meats and vegetables all fresh and hot good choice of desserts too only thing we thought there’s no atmosphere there could do with background music waitress were very pleasant and efficient but gentleman who showed us to our table was miserable needs to be more welcoming can put people off chef who served our carvery was pleasant too won’t let this put us off visiting again as the meal was very good

My husband and I went to the Bluebell for Sunday lunch and it was lovely, mainly the fact that it was hot food all cooked beautifully, the service was excellent and our compliments to the Chef/ Cook, we are going again tomorrow x

Went with a steak for 4 Groupon. Booked well ahead. They only had 1steak and when it arrived we were happy they did - it was tough and grissley. The other mains that we chose were straight out of the freezer. Of particular note was the reheated lasagne which had fused itself to the volcanic plate. Need I say more?

Food was lovely steak was cooked just the way I like it. Service was quick and friendly. Would of given 5 star's if the heating was on,was a little chilly in there but would go again.

We went to the Bluebell for lunch for the first time. It was very quiet and we were the only people eating. The waitress was very friendly and efficient. The steak meals were excellent value for money, best chips we had eaten. We will certainly return.

visited for lunch to be told kitchen closed or refurb and that there was a leaking roof in the bar. Left hungry and enjoyed a meal elsewhere. Will try again but shall phone before going !!

Myself my partner and mother in law went for a Sunday dinner, as heard good reviews. Well I'm soo glad we did the food was amazing by far the best Sunday dinner we have ever had. The staff and the land lady are very friendly and very helpful always have a smile on there face. Highly recommended

The place was empty apart from a children's party which was in the main dining area, so we sat in the pub bit. There was not really any atmosphere, and the television was on as well as music playing, which was a bit annoying, so I asked as we were the only people there if we could have the TV turned down, the barmaid did turn it down, but the music was fairly loud, this was at 12.15, and I just thought, why not have one or the other? We ordered our food, which was a bit pricy with not a lot of choice, and no special offers. We ordered fish, scampi and chicken. The food was served before we got cutlery, which we then waited 5 minutes for, and then we were told there was no tartare sauce (which was advertised on the menu). The chicken came with about 4 chips and no bacon (which was also advertised) and just looked like a floating mess in cheese. The fish was actually really nice, and the scampi was okay, but would have been nicer with sauce. The décor is a bit off, its traditional with a Jamaican twist, which is a bit half hearted and to be honest just doesn't work. I'm sorry as I have read good reviews about this place, but it just did not live up to it.

There was a hitch with the food we ordered, however the management/ staff rescued the situation by their excellent response and then served our food which was way above the standard we were expecting.

Came here for the first time yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the ribeye steak that was cooked perfectly. Delicious home made chips and a perfectly acceptable glass of red wine made the meal complete. Not many diners in this lunchtime so the atmosphere was certainly quiet but this suited us and our friends so it was easy having conversations.

Family meal with daughter. Service was awful, waited a very long time just for starters and again for main meal although pub was not busy. Starters were packed full of salt which gave our daughter a bad stomach. Main meal was also salty, home cooked chips a bonus but the three of us left the majority of our food. Butter for accompanying bread was put on same plate as warm meal and therefore melted into food, bread was so hard could not be eaten. Mango chutney as stated on menu was not available to accompany meal. Mentioned all of this on leaving when asked how meal was but only apology offered, no recompense for bad experience. Will not frequent again.

We have just finished eating at the Bluebell Inn Bar Kitchen in Newport Road Cardiff. We would highly recommend the Carvery it was delicious the staff are very friendly and very accommodating. Thank you. We will definitely be going there again.
