Blue Anchor Inn in The Vale of Glamorgan

We had such a great experience at the Blue Anchor Inn. We stopped off here while on a coastal drive over this past Easter. We walked in just in time for Sunday roast time and we were very happy we did! The staff were very lovely and kind. It was super cozy and it feels like you are transported back in time. Multiple times while I was there I kept imagining what it would've been like to be having a drink by the fire 600 years ago! The food was very good! I enjoyed the turkey roast immensely! Only negative I was that they gave the two of us just a few too many potatoes and I felt so badly that we couldn't take them with us. I highly recommend a stop here if you are nearby.

Beautiful pub ! The interior was gorgeous, so many cosy nooks and fireplaces , 3 of us ate from the “ light bite” menu, it was so filling , and very tasty and well presented, my son chose a main meal which was just as tasty. The service was fast and the ladies who brought us the food were so lovely and friendly. My son’s new favourite place to eat now.

I went here for a reunion with friends I hadn't seen in 30 years. It is a gorgeous old pub with all the character and charm one would expect. The drinks and food were outstanding. I'd gathered by how busy it was, that this is a local's favorite for Sunday lunch but I'd love to come back for a couple of pints in the evening as well.

Accueil très chaleureux très agréable et professionnel.Après une bonne guiness au bar on nous installe à l’étage où il y a une nouvelle cheminée très ancienne avec un feu, cosy et apaisant.Belle carte ,plein de choix possibles .les mets proposés sont frais et de qualités.ils sont merveilleusement bien présentés et cuisinés .Poisson,moules ,agneau un vrai régal .Un Rioja Blanc et rouge qui vont très bien avec.Nous avons passé un moment de restauration RARE 🙏 et très ému, je dis un grand merci et bravo au propriétaire ,son personnel.Ne passez pas à côté faites les kilomètres et prenez le temps d’y aller.Vraiment exceptionnel et hors du temps.

Such a beautiful country pub! Very cosy and cute inside! We visited the pub with family to celebrate my partner’s nans birthday and we were all extremely happy with our food choices! Everything appeared home cooked… I had the beef stroganoff which was delicious 👌🏻 We will definitely be returning! 😊

Visited this amazing pub with my wife during a long weekend break whilst visiting South Wales for the first time. Having originally driven past The Blue Anchor on our way to Barry, it didn’t look particularly inviting. However, on our return leg, it looked a bit more promising, so we decided to take a gamble and I’m so glad we did! All the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was delicious, and complimented by a superb range of real ales! We are both looking forward to another visit in the not too distant future!

Met my cousin's who had come down from Worcester...what brilliant service by all the staff and the food was wonderful...Great place to eat.

9 members of our group, the Gluttony Gang, indulged in the £29 Xmas Lunch menu on Monday 4th. Was it good? ____ No! ____ it was VERY GOOD, and this group of boorish pensioners were very satisfied and well-accepted.

Booked a table upstairs in the restaurant for the Christmas lunch time menu. The restaurant is welcoming with an open log fire and Christmas decorations. The staff were helpful and the food all 3 courses were very tasty with a great selection of drinks available. We have visited the Blue Anchor before and will continue to do so Very enjoyable but hope to see a few more logs on the fire the next time we visit.

We have dined here many times over the years and never been treated so badly as we were last night. We had booked over 2 weeks before and duly arrived on time only to be told we couldn’t eat in the restaurant ! We asked to speak with the manager who was arrogant and without any thought that the customer may be right ! He said that upon booking we should have specified whether we wanted to eat in the restaurant or bar, for god sake, we booked dinner on a Saturday night and have never been asked such a question before. It was obvious we had been ‘bumped’ out of the restaurant due to larger parties being accommodated. As we had booked a taxi for later that night, we had no choice other than to be be shown to the empty bar area downstairs which resembled a morgue. We were the only four diners in an area that probably had at least 40 dining cover spaces. The manager kept insisting that we should have specified when booking that we wanted to eat in the restaurant, however, there is nothing on their booking system to inform any customer of this so how would we have known, especially as we have never been asked such a question when booking many times before. As for the food, very average to say the least and they even managed to get a simple sweet order wrong twice ! The manager - Mr Coleman - needs to change his attitude to customers and was aggressive in his explanation as to how we should have gone about making a booking ! What a pity that our night was ruined by such poor management skills in such an attractive venue. Personally you couldn’t pay me to ever frequent the place again !

Love this place, we walk over with our dog every Saturday unless we have other commitments, sometimes even on a Sunday. Love the banter we get!! Often come for dinner on Saturdays with our friends who live in Aberthaw, just a shame the lunch menu downstairs is exactly the same as the evening menu upstairs with no specials and not enough choice of chicken as my friend doesn’t eat red meat or fish! Fish and chips is lush followed by Thai green curry. Would and often do recommend to anyone.

Lovely Saturday afternoon lunch for my parents anniversary. Eight of us so quite a large group which can sometimes cause problems, but food and service great. Can’t fault it. Looking forward to trying out the rest of the menu. Top place.

What a fabulous pub! Stayed there on a last minute Britstop (camp in the carpark for free if you eat/drink there). So friendly on the phone, massive carpark (opposite the main entrance)....the food was fab and service was fantastic! Top all that off with a toasty warm fire, and a walk to the beach on your doorstep and this is a real winner! Looking forward to going back! 10/10!

We ordered the panini sandwiches and I had the coronation chicken. The bread was prefect and crispy and the salad and coleslaw it came with was very tasty. The chicken was lush. Both paninis we ordered came with home cooked fries which were soooo good. The location of the Nlue Anchor is perfect and we had lunch and then walked to the beach after. Thank you Blue Anchor for a lovely lunch in a gorgeous location.

First time at this wonderful old pub. We had a dog with us so the four of us were restricted to the bar or the tables in courtyard. We were given a good table next to the fireplace. The food was gastro-pub standard and wine was decent and reasonably priced. There’s a huge car park belonging to the pub directly opposite so no problem parking.

We had a delicious lunch today. The food was really good. We had trip of fish for starter the homemade pie and Thai green curry finishing with sticky toffee pudding .. it was all really tasty. We booked in here for lunch on Bank holiday Monday after seeing someone post about them on Facebook and i have to say we were really impressed.There is not a huge menu, so my eldest son (aged 14) did initially have a moan about there being nothing for him to have. He then went for the Gammon and he was very glad he did. Lovely big piece of meat that was really well cooked and plenty of chips on the side with pineapple and egg. My youngest son had the adult fish and chips as the childrens menu is very limited, but the batter was crispy and really light and he made a good effort at getting through it due to enjoying so much.My wife and i had the Steak and Ale pies and they were spot on. We opted for chips instead of mash and there was plenty and the veg on the side was also lovely and cooked well.I would highly recommend the Garlic bread and the cheesy garlic bread. They are absolutely beautiful. One downfall for me was the lack of onion rings as a side. These are a firm favourite of all of ours when we are out and there wasn't any on the menu.We did eat here on the EOHO scheme, so obviously that makes a big difference to the price, but for me you get what you pay for and i will happily return here outside of this.

Six of us travelling in motor homes for the 2019 ICC World Cup Cricket were staying at Vale in readiness for the Black Caps first game at Cardiff. Booked a meal at the Blue Anchor Inn and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, venue, location, bar and food. My beetroot starter was delicious, fresh and all the flavours I enjoy. The pork belly and steak pie had great flavours and extremely filling! Did have a chuckle as one of our group ordered the Pork Pie - they were shocked when it was served cold! soon educated. Was a great meal served promptly with friendly service in a busy Friday evening rush hour.

Absolutely disappointed with this place....it’s a beautiful old old pub....fantastic energy there in the building ...food is disgusting...better food in a Wetherspoons, awful meat...chips were awful the fat they must’ve been cooked in was horrible, they were bright yellow, and it’s very expensive.....£66 for two lunches and 4 drinks., we will never go back...or recommend.....beautiful history and such a shame that the service is not doing it any justice....female bar staff had the most disgusting degrained grey teatowel hanging over her wrist/shoulder....if I’d seen it first I wouldn’t have eaten there!!Very disappointing after reading the reviews!

Booked to take my parents out to Sunday lunch in the restaurant. Very well priced, and good choices available. Food was beautifully presented and sooo tasty. There was so much veg for everyone to share. Yorkshire pudding is to die for. Pudding was fantastic- the Sticky Toffee Pudding was gorgeous. Friendly staff, attentive service. Well worth a visit. We went there for an evening meal on 29th February and had a most enjoyable evening. The atmosphere was superb, food excellent and staff very pleasant and efficient.

We live in Wiltshire and have friends who live in Swansea, so, wanting somewhere to meet for Sunday lunch, we chose the Blue Anchor Inn, Barry, as it seemed midway. It’s a very pretty, quirky pub with a thatched roof and dates back to the 14th century.There are two sittings for Sunday lunch.....12.30pm and 2.30pm. We chose the first sitting.The staff were very welcoming and were happy to wait for our friends arriving before taking our orders.There was a lovely choice on the menu, including vegetarian. We all had the traditional roast dinner though, and it was fab.Three courses cost £19.50, with drinks extra. The bill came to £97, for four people, which included three courses each, one round of drinks and coffee & teas.The food was absolutely gorgeous and service very good.Although the staff were preparing for the 2.30pm sitting, at no time did we feel rushed and were the last to leave.All in all, a brilliant choice of venue, and we’ll certainly return.I would definitely recommend the Blue Anchor Inn.

Visited Saturday evening, a lovely building, shame about the food. I was expecting good pub food due to positive reviews. I had seabass and my daughter had fish and chips, younger daughter had kids fish and chips. My seabass tasted of nothing and must have been frozen. It was meant to have a salsa, but that was a tiny drizzle. The kale was the tastiest bit. I was hungry so I ate it, but it was very poor. Fish and chips very average. Friendly staff, but dated menu choices and I can't image anything is freshly cooked. I wouldn't eat there again.

lunch time meal in a large group on a very busy Valentine’s Day. Each and every meal that was served promptly. The food was amazing which could not have been easy as we had all ordered individually. Staff were very friendly and professional.

We were a group of about 36 of our local walking group and had booked the Blue Anchor for a special member’s big birthday lunch. We all chose our meals in advance and ate in the upstairs dining room. The service and food, as usual, were superb. The staff are all so efficient, calm and helpful and our meals all came out piping hot and beautifully presented. Some of our group had two courses, some only one, but no one had anything but praise for their food. I chose to have the bass as my main course. £13.50. My plate arrived with a generous pile of creamy, smooth mash and chives, accompanied by crispy kale and samphire with some roasted cherry tomatoes and two fillets of crispy skinned boneless bass. I savoured every mouthful. Other diners on my table enjoyed the ravioli, a humongous piece of gammon and chips and some jacket potatoes which also looked very attractive. My compliments to all the staff for making our special lunch such an enjoyable one. I look forward to returning with other friends and family.

Cannot fault our Sunday lunch, the food & service was very good. The food was delicious, with plenty of fresh vegetables & gravy, all served piping hot. My husbands only disappointment there was no dessert with custard, but he said the chocolate brownie he did have was lovely. Will definitely going back again.

Just returned from France so popped to the pub for early dinner. Around 6 pm. It was packed but they managed to sort us a table. Fish and chips and a good pint. Lovely.

This was a lunchtime visit. It's an incredibly old place, first built 1380 if I remember rightly. Inside it is a warren of rooms low ceilings and even lower doors. If you're six feet plus watch your head. The menu is extensive and varied, we went full menu for lunch but they had an equally appetising lunchtime menu. The food was spot-on. They deserve a medal from the Real Pie brigade because they serve proper pies, i.e., pastry top sides and bottom. As I have said with monotonous regularity, a ladle of casserole with a baked disc of pastry plonked on top a pie does not make. The other meal, a Monkfish and Prawn Curry was also excellent, spiced just right so the fish was not clouded out. It is a very nice place, the full menu is on the pricier side of mid-range but the food is also a cut above pub grub. It is gastro-pub class really. Had we gone for the lunchtime only menu it would have been much cheaper. There is limited parking at the pub but a good sized village car park is just 50 metres down the road. Staff all pleasant to deal with, and the coffee is pretty good too.

Visited on my birthday for lunch. Still the same great service and menu choice. The atmosphere was enhanced by the real fires which welcomed you in from a chilly day.

Our pre-booked family Christmas dinner, once again, turned out perfect. Varied selections for our relaxing 3-course dinners were first-class with everything served piping hot and attended by charming waitresses as usual. A thoroughly enjoyed experience by a family of five and therefore highly recommended.

We had just walked out of a restaurant in Cardiff central for not having been seen to after an hour. We decided to visit the Blue Anchor on the way back to Swansea. A little out of the way, however the food is great there....
