The blacksmiths loft has been taken over by very friendly and welcoming owners. When the band came on I enjoyed myself much more so than when the bar music was playing. I feel the music played in the bar area before the band came on, was not suited to a Friday/Saturday night vibe. I alongside many of my family/friends would go in there more often if the music was more lively.

Visited on Saturday night - restaurant was busy with a few very vocal parties using constant bad language which didn’t help the ambience! My dishes were good (lamb shank was gorgeous) but sadly my partners dishes were pretty poor and when we asked to speak to the restaurant manager we didn’t get a great response - sad really as the restaurant has recently changed their manager and the predecessor was always attentive and great on customer service. We have always rated this restaurant and the bar downstairs especially when live music is on but will think twice about eating here again when there are other good options in close proximity! The bar downstairs remains excellent - great home flavoured gins!

We were the first to be seated as soon as the doors opened but the restaurant quickly filled with 4 other tables. The menu available suited all tastes and we opted for the excellent offer of 3 courses and a half bottle of wine per person at £18.95pp!The lamb roast platter to share was outstanding! The cut of lamb served perfectly pink was melt in the mouth with large freshly cooked to order yorkshire pudding. All the trimmings were cooked to perfection and sufficient to feed the 2 of us and our toddler. The children's high chair was special, very safe, clean and met the edge of the table so as our daughter could eat with us. The waiter was knowledgeable, genuine and gave us a perfect dining experience. The music, decor and wine were without fault and I loved how clean and pristine everything was allowing for a very relaxed Sunday lunch All in all another excellent meal at the blacksmiths loft. I just wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the live music downstairs in the lounge.

Had a wonderful Sunday lunch, restaurant was rightly packed. Quality of was excellent as usual, staff stretched but providing an excellent service. Food quality, for this money is exceptional, hand made starter and desert with a large main course and a bottle of wine between two for less than £20 per head, a no brainer! Coffee is excellent too. Follow that up with an open Mic from 3-7.30pm, with some of the top singers in the Midlands attending, what's not to like? Oh yea, 10% off your tab downstairs after you have eaten! And yes, I was the table that had the main before my starter.

I hate to give a three-star review but I have to be honest. The food was really lovely - the portion sizes were perfect for a lunchtime. The wine included in the set menu price is very drinkable too. However when we visited the service was what let it down. It felt like there really should’ve been another member of staff on.We waited over half an hour between ordering our desserts and receiving them, and it’s not like they were cooked to order. We also asked for tap water a couple of times but never got it. The table behind us also got their mains before their starters! Another table was getting a little impatient with their wait for their main course. When a table of six left their glasses weren’t cleared for quite a while too.We will no doubt be back to give them the benefit of the doubt, as we’ve really enjoyed previous visits.

We are real foodies and this cuisine was a welcome delight. I’ve taken a mark off for the heat in the place, it was pretty unbearable and made us feel a little unwell. And also the damp ceilings were a worry, and not nice to look at. Apart from that we highly recommend it! So much so, we rebooked when we were there!

Took my wife here Friday 22nd February for a date night. we've been before and loved it so decided to return. We arrived about 20 minutes early so popped in to the Blacksmiths Lounge which is a bar below the restaurant. As we sat down we were asked if we had a booking for upstairs and they advised them we were there. we ordered a bottle of wine and 20 minutes later the waiter showed us upstairs and took our drinks for us. My wife ordered the lamb shank which just fell apart and tasted delicious. I ordered the fillet steak and wasn't disappointed. I'm very particular where steaks are concerned but my fears were misplaced here. I asked for it to be cooked medium rare and that's exactly how it came! perfectly cooked and very tasty. the waiting staff are very helpful and extremely polite. The Blacksmiths Loft isn't cheap but its well worth the extra if you fancy a treat.

The food as in main course was perfect but as I believe they get their meat from butcher's Owen Taylor this is to be expected. For desert had creme brulee but the last time I visited a few years ago this took 30 minutes to make as done from fresh. However, last night it took less then 10 minutes so I can only assume it was reheated or part made already in advance.

All in all enjoyable, small menu, and a bit overpriced for what you got. My son had the steak, with mash and it looked a little lonely on the plate. My wife and i had the chateubriand, which came with trimmings, although the onion rings were burnt, and the peppercorn sauce looked like frog spawn, with loads of whole peeper corns in them. Constantly had to fish fish them out of my food to prevent bitign on them. The deserts were small in nature, and the bill was a bit dear for what we had.

The staff were very good and attentive with the right level of friendliness. Food, well its was OK but in my view expensive for what you got in terms of quantity. I don't expect large portions but the main courses were very small. The main problem: we were sat at a table for six at the end of the main restaurant. Very near the table was a curtain that divided off a "private room". Around our table was very cold and an artic blast was blowing through the curtains - the restaurant was also nearly empty so that didn't help. There was a cheap electric radiator stuck near the table which frankly achieved nothing. So, we sat all evening with our outside jackets on. Did we complain at the time? Well yes and they brought another electric radiator which again made very little difference. The waiter who served us told us that the room (or whole building?) "does not have heating"!? It was a cool autumn evening outside but not freezing so goodness knows how cold it could get inside in winter. In summary - I don't expect to pay the sort of premium price in a restaurant and have to sit in an outside jacket surrounded by electric radiators with wires trailing everywhere. This needs sorting....

We have been for Sunday lunch before few months ago and had a great meal then as well. Only thing to say that the menu was nearly the same this time so maybe a bit more variety to the menu occasionally would be good. I had the deep fried egg on potatoes enjoyed it both times my partner had the soup this time tomato and basil with bread and flavoured butter she said it was very rich and thick more like a passata sauce than a soup.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We've just got home from this restaurant 2100hrs having had a meal table booked for 1900. Wow, we've never visited a restaurant and returned home so quickly. Not the place if you have a special occasion. We entered into a noisy bar and then had an inquisition from a member of staff as to where we were eating - Not a good start. We were taken upstairs to the restaurant after seriously thinking of walking out. There was no greeting and a very cold reception. A member then showed to our table and left. We sat and waited, expecting a waiter to come and take our drinks order but this didn't happen. So we asked. I went to order the Bulgarian larger from their new drinks menu and was told they didn't have it. So, I went for the Estelle at £9 bit which is a bit pricey but, we were celebrating a special occasion and I thought I would have a treat. But when it arrived, the waitress didn't pour it for me, and it wasn't even served in an Estrella glass to match. (I guess when you spend £9, its ok to use any glass?) Ironically, I got a glass for the Bulgarian lager that they didn't serve. Meals ordered, thirst quenched here we go. For starters, we ordered the Crispy Squid Salad and were looking forward to a pile of fried squid... Only three rings of squid and a load of salad. The wine arrived, uncorked (coto de imaz reserva 2012 Rioja) I thought I would have a treat just shy of £40 a bottle. I can get a case for that much and what was I drinking? The open bottle was put on the table in front of me; no offer to taste, not pored out for me, no top ups during the meal. Neither was there any attempt to clear empty glasses, and we had to catch the eye of passing waiting staff to order more drinks.Well, I could go on. The staff seemed very naive, and there was undoubtedly no leadership. We paid and went to leave, at least expecting a "Good night sir/madame"... FORGET IT; absolutely no eye contact, we were ignored. So in summary, to the Owners/Management at the Blacksmiths Loft: You have a lot of work to do on your presentation and interaction with customers. The overall customer experience was extremely poor. You may think you are catering for the Saturday night crowd but when a family arrive to celebrate a special occasion, (mothers day) at least make an effort. A skilled waiter/waitress would make small talk with their tables they are responsible for

We'd pretty much given up looking for a Sunday roast in Derby City Centre having had a few let downs at other establishments, but was recommended Blacksmiths Loft, and what a good recommendation it was. The barman Sam allowed my partner to try a couple of wines in order to allow her to choose the right one for the meal, The starter (curried egg and Aloo Gobi) was intriguing, but complimentary. The meal was top notch, with the trimmings coming on a sharing board, so you never felt like there was too much of something you didn't want on your plate. The desert (cheeseboard) was varied and well presented. The service was attentive and there was a really laid back vibe in the restaurant. Following the meal, we took the rest of the botle downstairs and were greeted with an open mic. As big fans of live music, this was the perfect end to a wonderful lunch. Looked fantastic and tasted the same although we were both sure it was closer to rare if not blue. Either way a fantastic meal in a lovely if empty setting. The staff were very attentive and pleasant. However when we erre leaving anothrr pair csme in and ordered the cod but where told it was not available as they only had enough for the valentine service. Went to Blacksmiths Loft on Christmas Eve, hadn’t booked in advance but walked in and the staff were really accommodating and got us a table.

I like to come back to the restaurant because of delicious food. We also always had great service but this time we were waiting quite a while especially for olives which we ordered before the starters and didn’t receive them even after the starters came. Of course the staff apologised and promised to take it off the bill ... but they didn’t and we needed to remind them which is quite uncomfortable because these are only olives but we specifically wanted them with wine not with starters. The staff worked in a hurry not paying attention on good service... what a shame.

I recently went for dinner here and cannot rate this restaurant enough. The food is one of the best in Derby with service to match! We had 3 courses and all were beautifcally presented and tasted amazing. I would also say that the price is reasonable for the great quality you get. After we were done we went downstairs into the lounge where there was live music and another great atmosphere. We were taken to a lovely table that we had reserved and all drinks were ordered and served to our table! (no getting up and down and queuing at a bar which is even better). All the cocktails we had were again lovely!!

We had a lovely meal here for the office Christmas party and went on to the Blacksmiths Lounge for drinks after. All in all a great night with a fun and relaxed atmosphere and last but not least, great food! Everyone enjoyed their meal and as I say, still talk about how good the steak was! Some of the bigger guys ordered extra sides, but the portions were spot on for me.

Came here for a 21st birthday meal and the restaurant was practically empty. Didn't feel welcomed and contemplated walking out. The menu looked good and we had heard good reviews so decided to stay. Food was ok but not worth the price. The waiter seemed as though he couldn't wait for his shift to end and wasn't attentive for a large group of people. Nothing special was made for a birthday, and felt rushed through the meal. Won't be returning as the service was very poor, didn't feel welcomed and the food wasn't anything special.

We went for our Christmas office meal and it did not disappoint at all. This is the second time I have been now and it gets better and better. The food was exceptional and the service was as good, even though it was very busy with other parties. We went for drinks in the bar afterwards and again all of the staff were very polite and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this for a couples night or large groups. My personal favourite is the duck or chateaubriand. We will definitely be back soon.

We didnt choose anything off the Christmas starter as nothing attracted my appetite. The portions are really small and you may leave hungry There was no bread and butter on the table

The food - pretty tasty, superbly cooked pink beef and interesting starters. Not sure about this "sharing platter" craze which everyone seems to be doing where everything comes on one platter and you effectively serve yourself. It didn't seem to bring anything to the meal and seemed a bit of a faff having to lean over people. The deserts were quite small - the deconstructed Eton mess was just set yoghurt and pretty boring. The atmosphere- there isn't one sadly. Upstairs in the restaurant is painted dark grey but it's incredibly boring- it would benefit from some pictures on the wall and maybe a candle or two on the tables. The owner certainly needs to consider getting in an interior designer!Service - not bad, friendly bar staff and waitresses.Overall I probably wouldn't return, there are better places in derby with better atmosphere.

Since our last visit (and new owner) the place has been up-lifted, painted with more contemporary decor, it looks fabulous. Three course sunday lunch and a bottle of wine to share is great value. Food is well cooked and tasty, main course is served on a platter and is an ample portion size for sharing. Service from Rosie was welcoming and friendly with that all important smile.

I booked a table for three of us to try this restaurant as I'd heard good reviews but never been. We were all delighted with the service, the food was melt in your mouth and the overall ambience. Highly recommended if you appreciate excellent food and service. We were even given 10% off our drinks downstairs in the Blacksmiths Lounge after dining in the Loft which was a nice touch

I booked this restaurant for a visiting friends birthday treat. We were a party of 4 made up of 2 couples. Despite making the booking as a "birthday special occassion" we weren't treated any differently to other diners, nor were we even asked whos birthday it was. Not a great start. We began with drinks downstairs in the bar/cocktail area. The cocktails were fine, but i had to sit on a low stool type piece of furniture which wasn't particularly comfortable. The bar wasn't busy and there were some chairs available at other corners but these weren't offered to me. They seem to be promoting the "eclectic mix" style of seating at each table rather than 4 simple chairs at each table.Onto the meal... my friend decided he would go for the Chateaubriand for 2 as it was his birthday. We deiscussed me sharing this with him but decided we would go for one each as it was his birthday and the ladies could also try a bit and any extra could be taken home for our dog. Extra? Leftover? I don't think so.... When it came the portion of steak we were both served was only just enough for 1 man, despite the restaurant describing it as "for 2 to share".The sides we got were plentiful - chips, tomatoes etc. But the size of the steak portions were just such a let down. Thankfully we hadn't decided to share one between us. We would both have been left hungry buying chips on our way home and this review would only be 1 star. The price for the Chateau was reasonable and it was cooked nicely, the portion size of the meat just REALLY let it down.I would return here to give it another try, but if ordering the Chateau i would make it clear i wanted a piece of meat that could reasonably be descibed as fit for "2 to share" as what we got was barely enough for one!

Me and my fiancée visited this restaurant and bar at the beginning of the month The staff were friendly and attentive and overall very good But the star of the show was the food, we had an early evening meal, 3 course and it was cooked to a great standard and was delicious, allied with a bottle of wine the whole meal cost us 60 pounds which considering the food and the standard of it, it was great value. The only slight negative was the dessert, we had a Jaffa orange number which was not so great but only a slight criticismThen we went downstairs to the bar and had 3 lovely drinks Great ambience and we had 10% by virtue of having eaten upstairs Would heartedly recommend it

Table of 11 for a friends birthday lunch. Very accommodating, allowing us to take a cake and decorate the table. Spicy egg starter was so yum, and some of my friends had the ham hock which was also really good. Beef, chicken & lamb platters all really good. Plenty of veg, Yorkshire’s & gravy. Have also eaten here previously with my boyfriend for an evening meal and I remember that being really good. Highly recommend!

First visit apart from being 1 flight up (the name gives a clue) really liked the place. We had wine by the glass my Malbec was lovely as was my wife's Pino Grigio. Both starters were great Salmon Roulade & a Ricotta mousse . The boss had fish of the day (Sea Bass), really go, I ordered Lamb rump (pink) it was overdone but still very good. We ordered 2 more glasses of wine, they didn't come so we had to ask again. The Eton Mess is to die for, it's Pannacotta with Strawberry and Meringue. We sat for ages waiting to order coffee, gave up in the end and paid the bill. Apart from the service everything was good. Would I go again, yes. Would I recommend it, yes. Much more good than bad

Booked the Blacksmiths Loft some time in advance as had 20 guests for a birthday party. Met early in the bar downstairs for drinks and had some G&T's and great cocktails in a fun party atmosphere. Headed-up for dinner just after 8pm. Great food and service even though restaurant was very busy. Definitely recommend for a birthday party!

We dined here after going to the theatre. Arrived at about 5.30 and were seated, initially, at the back of the restaurant. It's grim there. Dark and cramped. We asked to move and the waiter kindly found us a place at the front looking onto Sadler Gate. Much better. We had the two course chateaubriand menu. Starters of soup and ham hock which were okay but nothing to shout about. The chateaubriand however was excellent. Cooked perfectly medium rare and with a good selection of "trimmings". Couldn't fault it except for the strange sauce that came with it. Sweet and didn't work so I'm glad I tried it before putting it on my steak. The wine was disappointing. Chilean Carmenere which I love - this was a poor example which we recorked and took home and made gravy out of. The staff are really nice and it seems very busy. Good luck to them. Whilst there were some downsides they were far outweighed by the positives.

We recently visited for Sunday lunch as a family of six for our Pearl Wedding Anniversary. Drinks were served downstairs before we were shown to our table in the main restaurant. The starter which proved most popular was the spicy deep fried egg which was delicious. Our party all chose the sharing platters for our main course , two beef, two lamb and two chicken. These were accompanied by a wide selection of vegetables and crispy Yorkshire puddings. There was plenty for everyone. Desserts were light and tasty, just right to finish the meal. As we had three courses, a bottle of house wine was complementary. The atmosphere in the restaurant was relaxed and convivial. We were offered good service and didn’t feel rushed even though the restaurant was busy. We all felt that we had received good value.

This was our first visit to Blacksmiths Loft. The dining area was very pleasant. We were quickly served with drinks by very pleasant staff, who were very helpful with our wine choice. We both ordered the Belly Pork, which was delicious, as were the accompanying vegetables. We then ordered the Jaffa cake dessert and an Eton Mess. The Jaffa cake desert was delicious, but unfortunately the Eton Mess was very disappointing. The panna cotta was hard, not light and creamy, there was a couple of shavings of meringue and about half a strawberry (not worth the money sadly). We would most certainly return, but would not recommend the Eton Mess.
