Black Lion Hotel in Richmondshire

Lovely portion of Sunday dinner. Rubbery fat on pork not as listed on menu. Pork and crackling it wasn't. Chicken wasn't carved breast but chicken on the bone not for me. The lady didn't come and ask how are we doing. So gave feedback at the till when paying. They discounted us one drink. Not a rant or grumble well meaning people just sharing this so others aren't disappointed. Or the chef gets a little preparation and cooking duration training... Peace and love...

Sunday lunch ....went for roast pork with crackling. Unfortunately the crackling was soggy - very disappointing.

Visited for Sunday lunch... From walking in to being served we waited 40 minutes.. Asked what larger was available and waitress didn't seem to know? Dinner was nothing exceptional for the price we paid. Visit Richmond all the time and tbh would avoid this one in the future... Looked round and a lot of people seemed to be waiting a long time for food to be served... Was tempted to have a dessert but service was that slow decided against it.

Maybe a disconect between Table staff and Kitchen staff. Once again I must be the only Vegie in town.

Lovely place. Atmosphere was really friendly and welcoming. Food was super tasty and freshly cooked- there was a bit of a wait for it to arrive but the quality more than made up for it. The room was clean and comfortable, the pillows definitely deserve a mention....so comfy! Would 100% recommend this place.

Lovely food and ambience. If there's a group of you, book the snug, which is lovely and cosy. Shame the fireplace is only for looking at, but the whole place is nicely furnished and decorated. Staff are attentive without being intrusive. I recommend the rump steak toastie, which was perfectly cooked. I would've preferred a toasted baguette or panini to sliced white, but it was nice and came with good chips. The hotel is a great location for Richmond, right in the town centre but not noisy, as the rooms are at the back. Our room was nicely decorated with solid wood furniture - Free-standing wardrobe, dressing table and bedside cabinets. Surfaces are not flat because the floor slopes, but that's more entertaining than inconvenient, a quirk of such an old building. The only furniture I would add is an easy chair or two, especially as we arrived after a very hard-working day, and the pub seating is all dining-style. The sleigh bed was comfy, with good pillows and you could choose a bright central light or softer side lights. The brew station was well-equipped; I don't like UHT milk, but they gave me a jug of the real stuff, which lasted through to the morning when I kept it on the windowsill. Some rooms have a bath with over-shower and some just a shower. Ours was the former, which can feel a little cooler, but the water was very hot, so I can't complain. We stayed in the middle of December and the radiator in our room wasn't working. However once we reported it, the staff arrived with a portable heater in about 30 seconds! It worked perfectly and having switched it off overnight, we were warm enough in the morning without needing it.

We like this place Nice atmosphere, relaxed, dog friendly. Lunch bar menu is varied. Specials ok. Beer and wine reasonable prices.

We were not offered desert menu and not much choice of vegetarian dishes

We had a brilliant stay on Friday 1st December for my husband's birthday. The staff were very pleasant.Our breakfast was gorgeous. We will be staying at The Black Lion again in future. Pamela and George Ayre.X

We stayed here with 7 other couples for 1 night. What a lovely place to stay. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The room was lovely too and the bed are so comfortable. Would definitely recommend. What a beautiful place Richmond is.

Lovely Sunday roast which the whole family enjoyed.

Recently stayed at the black lion for a few nights. The room was small but big enough for the 2 of us. Bed clean and comfy. Shower was 1 of the best we've had in any hotel but the bathroom was quite dusty behind the door. Breakfast was great and we had 1 evening meal which was excellent. Great service from Michelle and Rachel in particular

We went here for Sunday roast. Service was quite poor. Waited 40 minutes on main course and a further 20 minutes for dessert. We both ordered roast beef dinners. The beef was lovely but the parsnips were very hard, Yorkshires were frozen in the middle and the roast potatoes were also frozen. We complained and the waitress brought fresh Yorkshires and roast potatoes. The Yorkshires were hot but the potatoes were again cold. On finishing our meals we advised the waiter that the potatoes were still cold. He apologised and said he would take money off the bill. When we went to pay the bill the waitress basically said we were lying and the potatoes were just out the oven. Absolute rubbish. They were not even hot to touch. The waiter who said we could have money off had left and we therefore had to pay full price. The waitress was very rude and as we were leaving spoke to us in a very sarcastic manner. Such a shame as we only wanted a few pounds off. Terrible service and rude staff so we will not return!

The Sunday roast was delicious thoroughly enjoyed it.

Poor quality food, overcooked fish with small amount of chips and mushy peas- refund asked for as so poor. Checked with 3 stsff that dish advertised was a vegetarian burger and when arrived it was a meat burger with Vegetarian sauce, with tiny amount of chips. Both dishes £12.95- refund given. Very disappointed as always had good experiences at this pub. Sadly, off out list for a nice pub lunch!

Stopped here for some supper. Lovely historic old pub. Food great but service a bit hit and miss. Maybe the waitress was new? Bar staff great and all staff friendly and helpful.

Room 14 not to clean looks very tired chick meal very dry plus breakfast in morning very disappointing Alarm went of twice in the night so out of bed at 12.40 then again around 5.30

Stayed overnight great breakfast and a quiet room

Had to wait about 25 minutes for food. My wife had difficulty finding the ham and chicken in her ham and chicken pie! My steak really couldn't be described as 'medium/rare' which I asked for. Just average really.

Although our room had been flooded, they re housed at nextdoor hotel . Everyone very helpful and kind. Breakfast was at the black lion and they gave it to us as gesture of good will. Thank you to all staff at both hotels. Will def go back again and visit Richmond .

Stayed here for 1 night as we was working in the area. Lovely area to have a walk around! The rooms are clean, quiet and comfortable. The food is really nice, good selection of drinks. The staff are also really nice. The only downside is there’s only a 8 space small car park and with us having a big van if we hadn’t of got there early we wouldn’t have been able to park there or for free.

Paid for puddings here and had to ask where they were after 50 mins Total mistake and was giving a free drink on the house, Wont put me off going again

Very very disappointing meal for two. 6:55pm arrival 7:10pm ordered 8:20pm no food 8:35pm left. The ladies serving were very polite and very apologetic when we asked where our food was. Part of the food order arrived and we were told the rest would arrive soon. One of the meals ordered was a steak, Unfortunately it never appeared. Looking around the bar there was no one else in and even the bar staff couldn’t understand why. Sorry to say we wont be back to eat or recommending to anyone. No explanation as to why it was taking so long. Not great for a hotel of the town.

Ordered the chicken very nice but pork tough as old boots well over cooked. Ate it all because I was hungry.

Popped in for a family evening meal, friendly welcome, attentive staff, good selection of food and ales.

Feel conflicted - on one hand it's very nice and atmospheric with friendly polite staff but on the other thete are a couple of issues that need addressing. The check-in was quick and easy; the food very nice; hotel is nicely decorated; bed was very comfortable with fabulous pillows; central location was excellent. However, they have a staff shortage issue and the nice food took a long time to arrive. Desserts took 35 minutes alone. Talking of which, my dessert included coconut ice cream but it was served with vanilla (ran out of coconut) without me being informed or offered a chance to change my order. The young, inexperienced waitress worked hard and was very polite in difficult circumstances. The room was comfortable but the housekeeping team need to address the dusty bathroom ledges and corners and maintenance should take a look at the mastic around the basin and shower that's going black. These issues wont put us off booking again though but dealing with these issues would make The Black Lion 10/10.

Nice beer and the staff especially Michelle who worked so hard dealing with a problem with a room, serving and just being so friendly. The sausage and mash was poor but my partners was terrible, shame cause the pub is great.

A solid option in the centre of town, the staff were super lovely and accommodated our every need. Nice, spacious interior and a good range of traditional food options at affordable prices.

Had a lovely weekend staying at this great little hotel . Staff were great especially Tracy who was brilliant organising our group.

We visited Richmond at the weekend and visited the Black Lion for some food. Hubby had the mixed grill which he loved. I had the steak with Stilton and garlic sauce which was perfectly cooked. We both had the sticky toffee pudding which was delicious and recommended by Michelle. The atmosphere was very pleasant. The barmaid Michelle was most welcoming, she has a bubbly but professional personality, her hair colour was debatable- was it blue or purple? A good talking point! we felt very comfortable here and will certainly be coming back to try more of the food that Michelle recommended and see more of her lovely welcoming personality. Thank you Michelle.

Deliberate upset of my 14 year old daughter. Asked for ID from her to drink lemonade and blackcurrant. Adamant that my daughter had to provide it because the woman behind the bar 'knows the law. Embarrassed and upset we left. Then the said woman started shouting BYE BYE BYE at the top of her voice. Tried to contact management through facebook and eventually got a message saying I would receive a call that evening. Call never came. Next day a call did come and the landlady Michaela said she would check CCTV and get back to me. No response. The bar person had told deliberate lies to her boss by saying there was only 2 of us there. Well cctv will show there was clearly 3 of us. So maybe that's why we never got the call. My daughter was distraught thinking she had caused trouble for us and is still upset days later. I cannot state more clearly that all honest decent people should avoid this place like the plague. If the food and drink are on par with the staff then it be disgusting.

Most of restaurants were closed so had to come in this pub for dinner. 1980s taste…

A great location in the centre of Richmond. The accommodation was comfortable but be warned there are low ceilings as it’s an old building. Staff and service were excellent. Food was generally good. No problem recommending this as a place to stay. I think however there coffee that accompanied breakfast was not great.

Worth a Visit, just laking, at Cereal at Breakfast.

Really enjoyed our lunch at the Black Lion. Richmond isn't short of good food venues, but well worth a stop. Their menu caters really well for children. They even had activity bags to keep little ones busy (quiet) whilst waiting for food, which was really appreciated. My wife and I both had the chicken schnitzel, which we'd definitely have again. The coating was delicious, and the chicken was very tasty!

Lovely old pub real ale friendly staff great food

Absolutely appalled with the service we received this afternoon. We ordered our food and didn’t receive it until an hour later. Meanwhile we had made numerous drinks orders which were wrong each time. When the food finally arrived it was cold, wrong order once again and portions weren’t great. We sent the food back. At the end of the meal we gave our feedback to a blonde haired waitress who aggressively responded, did not care about our feedback in the slightest and said ‘well you’ve eaten the food haven’t you’ when we responded that we had to send it back and that orders throughout our meal were wrong she said ‘well it wasn’t me’. She then shouted across the restaurant ‘you want to work an hour doing this job’ and stormed off. I have never experienced service like it. Absolutely terrible. She does not deserve a job in the hospitality industry!! And I feel sorry for the poor trainee who had to work alongside her

Very slow service. We waited a long time for our meal. Food was ordinary.

Would not go back! Waited nearly an hour to be served, although not that busy, when food came the steak pie had no meat just gravy, the Sunday roast was poor with what seemed like frozen veg, the mash potato was from a packet imo, the gammon was very good but the chips were frozen and very scrappy. Very disappointed with the quality of the food!

We did a 2 night weekend stay March 2023. Booking in was quick and we were directed to room 14 which was on the very top floor. Access to this room was very difficult due to uneven, narrow and steep winding steps. I fell on the uneven stairs, near a cleaning cupboard, while carrying my luggage up to the room and twisted my knee. My friend (who stayed in a different room) also had the same thing happen to her but she fell into the cupboard! I then again fell on the steep winding stairs up to the top floor and had to pass luggage up to my husband who had by this time banged his head on the low stairwell ceiling. Heating in the room didn't work, window was drafty, bathroom shelf was coming away from the wall causing anything put on it to slide off. Lack of a mirror in the room was an inconvenience, had to plug hairdryer in, in the bedroom and take it through to bathroom mirror. I did not sleep well on the first night (friday) due to noisy people walking along the street until 3am. Secondary glazing may help resolve this! On a positive note the bed was clean and comfy, the room was spacious. Breakfast was basic.

All good except book direct with hotel or you may get rooms 14 or 15 Stair access to these two rooms is dangerous, seriously if your not athletic avoid these rooms Otherwise the place is good

Not been in for quite a while. Very impressed with the new feel of the place, very welcoming. Great staff- nothing too much bother. Food was excellent, we had lasagna and the pie - speedy service and super hot and tasty! Definitely not a microwave job! Look forward to going back soon ☺️

Very disappointed. There wasn’t that many customers but all sat without food so we thought that our order would be quick . We waited 50 mins to be served other customers just up and left . The service was not good as when I enquired into how long it would be before the order would take I was informed that it was very busy!! Really I counted a total of 12 people including 4 of us. Would I return a big No. There are plenty of other eating establishments in a small community that would be glad of the business.

Excellent Sunday lunch with super service from staff the polar opposite from our previous visit

A quaint little pub in the centre of Richmond (North Yorkshire) with a good reputation and atmosphere. There is a separate eating area which makes things easier. My son had his wedding reception there in a private room upstairs. Revisited on 19th September 2021 for my grandsons 15th birthday and had a very good and substantial meal with the rest of the family. We where in the same room where my son and daughter-in-law had their wedding reception, which had been refurbished since then. The new decor was pleasant and the food very good served by a very friendly staff. Made another visit between Christmas and New Year 2022/23 and standards have not dropped. Food and drinks were extremely good and the service personal. Would certainly recommend it for good food and a friendly atmosphere.

Great location for exploring Richmond with ample free parking for hotel guests. Nice breakfast and evening meal. Rooms clean and tidy and dog friendly

January 13/14 2023 Stayed at the black lion 2 nights. Staff friendly and welcoming. Room was number 14, right at the top. Lovely and spacious, nice and clean. Bed very comfortable. Throughout both nights the wind was WOW, so you can imagine the noise from the people outside enjoying themselves on the way home. Didn't bother us but maybe to some other guests. Had evening meal there first night was very nice, it does get busy throughout the night. Breakfast both mornings was rather nice, and Fruit juice, coffee, tea, cereal etc, then choice of menu, fryup, eggs benidict, bacon sandwich ect cooked to order. 11am checkout so no rushing about after breakfast. Would definitely stay again, Highley recommend!

Stopped for one night they put us on same floor has work men noise started about 11.30 pm at 3am I asked them to calm it down then they started banging on my door and putting keys in lock wife by now frightened. Reported to in morning said we would receive a phone call this did not happen. Phoned at 4pm spoke to management all I can say not bothered do not go simple because work men on long term stay hotel will lose money. Money and before guests.

Lovely stay here for 1 night whilst visiting family in Richmond. We had a 2 rooms which were connected and separate bathroom which was ideal for 2 adults, a teenager and dog. Breakfast was very good and Jake who was on his own serving was so accomodating and even did a few extra sausages for the dogs. Parking can be difficult as not many spaces and pub gets busy as lots of people come to eat. Lots to do in Richmond and great walks if you have a dog or even just like walking. Would definitely stay here again.

Staff were attentive and pleasant in all instances, couldn't fault them. Unfortunately I thought the portions (topside beef etc) were very small. I finished mine but afterwards didn't even know I'd eaten. Could have doubled the portion size and it may have touched the sides. For £14 I thought it was very poor. Puddings were large though. Beef was also overcooked...

Excellent food, we had the Sunday lunch and the steak and ale pie, both were delicious. The service was excellent, they seated us even though they were busy and we hadn’t booked. Glad we went there.

Basic for a Sunday dinner. Overcooked beef and chicken. Veg was perfect. Starter and dessert were the best courses. Service staff great but the length of time between courses dire.

The Black Lion was recommended to us for Sunday lunch so we popped in on Sunday 30th. It’s lovely and cozy with a warm welcome, we were seated quickly and both decided on the pork dinner, service was swift and attentive and I must say the food was gorgeous, probably one of the best Sunday lunches I’ve had, a good sized portion and beautifully cooked, extra gravy was available too ( always a bonus for me 😋) for desert we shared the award winning sticky toffee pudding and it didn’t disappoint. We will certainly return.

Poor, bland, overpriced, small portioned food. The Black Lion used to be renowned for having great food in large portions at a very reasonable price. I visited recently as it had been a while and I was looking forward to the refurbishment and a good feed. The decor looked good and fresh while keeping the old character of the pub. The young staff were also very polite and attentive which was a good welcome. I ordered the pie and chips and my mum ordered the curry. I then looked up, and to my horror ... I saw that the pub was no longer independently owned as Punch pubs had taken it over ... My pie was £12:95 and only included the basics of chips, peas and gravy but I looked forward to tucking in. I was served a few thin chips, some cooked frozen peas and a pie the size of a mince pie. My mum did better with her curry but that was also quite bland, small but there were 2 huge poppadoms and some nice rice. I mentioned how the food was 'different' to how it used to be as I paid and the barman nodded and looked embarrassed at what they had to serve and said 'It's gone very corporate'. In brief, drinks were fine, service very good, decor tasteful but the food is extremely overpriced, small and bland, and I hate to be that person ... but it would have been better going to Wetherspoons. Avoid.

So very disappointed. Not at all the quality or standard of food they use to serve. Really quite sad. Went recently for Sunday lunch Sept 2022 after the new decorating closure, expecting a lush Sunday roast. Sadly whether spoons does much nicer food and is cheaper. Straight from the freezer Yorkshire’s puddings (not in yorkshire!), straight to the oven freezer potatoes that tasted awful, no cauliflower cheese or vegetarian nut roast (no we didn’t want to order but some poor veggie did) over cooked, browned and tasteless carrots, sad red cabbage and green floppy beans. Roast pork that was served crackling side down and drenched in gravy so no crackling, roast chicken breast that was over cooked not at all prepped well (still had sinew and inedible membrane), only saving grace was the roast beef but even that was heavily served with large lumps of inedible gristle running through the centre of all pieces. Please go back to your old lunches, they were so lovely.

Very pleasant staff and helpful

Stayed last Friday we had two rooms both were comfy and clean and great for doggy families. Room 7 is great as you have two bedrooms so no sharing with the kids. Food and service is very good the lady who checked us in and the bar manager are a credit to the pub
