Black Lion in Ceredigion

Had a lovely table under the marquee with stunning views of the sea, and also had a good system in place with regards to Covid.Ordered the roast beef and came out shortly after, good portion sizes with a good variety of veg, (all very tasty), and the beef was very tender. Only point would be that there wasn’t enough gravy ! If someone checked back on us we would of asked for more. Otherwise a very pleasant pub and will be back again.

Possibly the best fish and chips for years. The scampi was superb too. Highly recommended even in these strange times.

Due to covid restrictions you sit outside in a marquee, there's heaters so no problem. Service was first class, food was very nice.

Very COVID safe with clear instructions of moving around the pub. The portion sizes were huge & great value for money food was outstanding it’s a bonus our Frenchie could come along. The views across the harbour from the beer garden were beautiful would 100% recommend

Lovely food at the Black Lion, we were recommended to book as it can be quite busy at the weelend. Staff were very attentive and friendly. We were given good firm instructions as to how to move around the pub due to Covid regulations, there is a one way system in operation. Good choice on the menu can highly recommend the Lasagne and chips. We sat in the marquee and had a wonderful view across cardigan Bay.

We had the most amazing skills cooked Lamb Tagine & couscous with garlic bread. It was the best meal that we have had for a long time. Well cooked and presented. Felt really safe. Covid 19 measures were the best we have experienced. Staff helpful, polite and lovely too. Will definitely book again. Thanks!

Great food friendly staff and plenty of space especially with COVID they have a one way system and table service

Quality of the food and service was excellent and the prices were very reasonable. The pineapple salsa with the gammon steak was a nice addition and very tasty. All Covid precautions were well thought out and observed - we felt very safe

We managed to get an early booking. The COVID safety measures are excellent and are clearly explained by staff on enterting and you are given a copy of these as well. Service was efficient and pleasant. The food was exceptional. Gamon steak perfectly cooked, side of beef for my partner the most tender and tasty we've had and a home made curry for my son. Three different meals all of a very high standard. I think this place have really done an excellent job to keep everyone safe in these difficult times. We had a great time and the staff were very pleasant and friendly.

Strolled into New Quay yesterday & found this pub. We sat outside in the Marquee, which has really lovely views of the Harbour. The staff were brilliant first off, they explained everything Covid related really well & their one was system was great. We all went for the same dish & we did not regret it- I shared this picture to my social media too & everyone commented how gorgeous the food looked. I’ll definitely be back if I’m down that neck of the woods again. Diolch :) x

We had a takeaway Sunday lunch today, we could not eat the beef. The beef was so stringy we couldn't even cut it properly. The rest of the dinner was also tasteless. Not usually one to complain but don't waste your money! £25 for two dinners which are inedible.

Really good pub grub haven't been here before but staff were amazing and friendly. Food was large portions and truly delicious and the best pub in new quay for following covid 19 rules and regulations

We booked to come here based on other reviews and I can definitely confirm that the food is delicious, we were in a large family group and between us pretty much had everything off the menu with no complaints! I did feel that some of the staff were pretty blunt, I had arrived 5 mins early from my booked time in a deluge of rain and had the door firmly shut in my face after being snapped at that I was early - fair enough, but I think it could have been dealt with more gracefully particularly as I was carrying a very cold and wet baby with me.We had to sit in the garden which we knew about in advance, but were sat at a table right on the edge of an open marquee with rain coming in over the table and seats - we were the only diners in there so I asked if we could move to a alternative table and again the same person snapped no - they were all booked, I asked whether ALL the other diners had reserved actual table numbers and explained about the rain and was told, “yep - welcome to Wales!” If this pub could improve their service, it would be a real gem, it has some of the best views around, just let down by a strange attitude and I really don’t know why?!

Had booked a table for 6 before coming in holiday. The system they had in place was brilliant and felt very safe in the marquee, apart from the strong wind lol. Meal was very good and friendly service

We are on holiday and this restaurant is highly recommended on TripAdvisor so we booked in. Coming from a day out we immediately found we couldnt actually get near the place via car. Total gridlock in village. So I dropped the family off and parked at the far end of the village and walked through the traffic. My partner and three kids where in there already, so I went in to find them on a wonky table outside. 45 min wait we were told but it turned out to be 30 mins which was good. We ordered food for three hungry children off the children's menu , only to find this was poor. Chicken goujons.... there were 2 goujons, peas and an incredible amount of chips on their plates , The chips were chip shop chips, the chicken was not ideal and the kids only just managed to eat it. Another order was the curry.... again, not ideal. My partner had a steak which was £19, and I had the burger. The burger itself was ok but a mass of choppy chips. Would I go again...... sorry. No I wouldnt go again. Even a harvester would give us better , nicer foods , cheaper price and access to the actual place. Yes there are nice views, but the views can be seen along the coastline.

Came here for the last evening of our holiday, food was really good, service efficient and the covid measures in place at this time were well thought out. Definitely worth a visit for dinner.

We had a little wait but in these times it's to be expected, they were so accommodating and the food was superb.....lovely staff and atmosphere. Phone in advance to ensure your seat. We will be back.

So staying locally for the last few days we’ve visited on a few occasions. The staff are managing well coping with COVID restrictions, peak season and weather conditions , so visitors give the staff a bit of slack. Chloe has always amazing and made sure we were looked after ( group of 7) for drinks and food which was amazing.

Whilst staying in beautiful New Quay we decided to explore different places to eat and called into The Black Lion. Unfortunately we were met with rude unwelcoming staff and we left. We will not be returning.

We booked a table via email and was offered 2 time slots, accepting 1 of them you would think would be enough, we turned up on the time we were offered but told there was no booking made as we didn’t get a confirmation email. A family of 5 on a wet Sunday afternoon is not what you want to be told and offered very little help from the arrogant manager asking my daughter show us the email you were sent, we were not offered any alternative other than you can have drinks but sit in the rain. I certainly won’t be rushing back to this place.

We booked well in advance which was fortunate as we were unable to get in later that week, COVID plays a large part.. food & drink are exclusively outside, food is under cover whilst drink is not. The food was fantastic, the beer service was something else to be experienced, left us gobsmacked....The idea is to go to a shack and place your order for food and drinks, return to your seat and everything will be brought to you..Shackman.. not quite sure how to describe, anyway, my wife asked if she could have a cold drink to which she got an abrupt NO! About two seconds passed and he said only if you give me a table number.. he seemed to be a bit put out so we gave him it and requested two drinks.. We then asked for 2 starters and 2 mains... only to be told No you can't... we both stood frozen until again, after a pause he said the starters are only for lunch.. Ok we said, paid and off we went to our table and tried to figure how this guy could be deemed fit to work at the front of shop and expect people to return to him to purchase drinks..Maybe it was an off day or moment perhaps? As it was we left soon after to the next bar.Don't miss this place the food is gorgeous... but remember your table number and order from the right menu and you'll enjoy the experience

Not only was the service quick and friendly but they had social distancing measure in place that reassured me and my family. Drinks came quickly to the table and the food was really great. The home cooked chips were especially good and the minted peas that come with the fish and chips are AMAZING!We're so glad we chose to go here for a meal. Thank you Black Lion for such a pleasant experience!

Both the food and service were generally very good. The fish and steaks were excellent. Three stars are for the “chicken jalfrezi” which was just bizarre. Dry chicken in a tomato herb sauce, no spices or curry powder, none of us could work out what it was but it definitely wasn’t a chicken jalfrezi. Go there, it’s good, but only have the British dishes.

Visited on Thursday. Weather was beautiful so decided to visit New Quay and called by The Black Lion on the off chance of a table. Excellent social distancing measures in place. We were shown to an outside table and the ordering system was explained clearly. We placed our drinks and meal order at the outside bar. Drinks were delivered immediately to the table and food arrived promptly. Gammon and chips and homemade beef burger and chips were both delicious and generous portions. Cleaning of tables was being carried out as soon as customers vacated. All in all a fantastic experience and would highly recommend a visit if in New Quay

Visited Saturday evening after a long walk on the beech, most welcome couple of pints. Very efficient service with the drinks given the social distancing restrictions. Some issues with the outside till talking properly with the card reader which was a pain, otherwise a good visit.

Four of us went there for an evening meal, two of us ordered the battered cod and chips, when it came the cod and the chips were a very dark brown, overcooked to the point we could only eat a fraction of it, also tasted of very old burnt fat. One of us also ordered the vegetarian jalfrezi, she’s a vegetarian for over 40 years, she was served the chicken jalfrezi, totally unacceptable, and when the waiter was told, he said that she had ordered incorrectly, as if a long term vegetarian would order chicken

What an amazing spot outside for lunch in the summer, a great view looking out to the sea. Midweek food is excellent and they probably offer one of the best Sunday lunches in the area, the only fault is I wish they offered table service, I can understand not doing it for outside but while if you are in the restaurant and having food it’s nice to be asked if we need any drinks and what we want for food, it wouldn’t hurt one of the 3/4 staff members behind the bar to come round with a pen and paper and take an order and halfway through the meal just ask if we need anymore drinks.

We had a great family lunch here recently. Comfortable and welcoming, beer kept well. Food was all fresh, hot and very tasty...best chips we have eaten in a long time, proper homemade! Kids meals really good size, delicious burger and a nice outdoor area too. Would recommend

Gorgeous home cooked food, fab views out to sea, friendly staff and a huge gin list. What more can you ask for! Visited here in Dec with my husband and two children and would defo recommend and be returning!

Popped in twice whilst visiting New Quay staying in neighbouring Llangranog. Lovely pub great atmosphere, friendly welcome from the staff Liam, Mike & Benjamin. We will come back soon.

Popped in for a lite lunch yesterday , friendly welcoming, cosy place - kept kitchen open for us as we were technically late for lunch. Beautiful welsh rarebit and lovely wine/Guiness - this will be our go to place in New Quay from now on in

Visited many times although busy service excellent cod and chips as good as anything anywhere although probably one of the most expensive at £13.50.

Visited here on sunday 20th October, we both opted for roast pork and fair play it was melt in the mouth delicious, lovely vegetables and a cauliflower cheese and the homemade Yorkshire puddings were spot on. Quick hassle free service. Would definitely recommend.

My wife and I have stayed in New Quay on holiday and short breaks quite a few times over the last few years.We have eaten numerous times in the Blacklion and the quality of the food is excellent. This is the first time we have stayed at their B&B. I can say the stay was an excellent experience and the room we stayed in was well presented and very clean, it also had a lovely sea view. The staff are a credit to themselves and the owners, nothing was too much trouble and they were friendly, polite and professional. As spoken, the food is excellent, well cooked and presented and good value. Well worth a visit!Jim and Tracy Carroll Hereford

We walked here from Cai Bach at the far end of the beach. Better when the tide is out. Were not planning to eat here and had not booked but as the sun was shining and there were spaces, we were glad we did. Service was good - order from bar - and food plentiful and tasty. Lots of side dishes. Recommend.

I’ve been to New Quay many times and walked past the Black Lion.

Stopped for a light lunch and to watch a rugby match. Had a very fresh & tasty baguette with coleslaw/salad garnish. All food being served looked great. Very large gardens at rear. Nothing to dislike about the Black Lion.

We always have Sunday lunch here when staying in New Quay. It’s always well cooked with a good selection of vegetables. Today we had Pork with Apricot Stuffing, and Apple Sauce. The vegetables:Carrots,red cabbage, cauliflower cheese,mashed swede, roast potatoes, parsnip and peas. Delicious . Looking forward to our next visit.

Called in to this Inn on the weekend of the annual newquay,music festival.What a great pub,friendly and welcoming staff,great sellection of beers.Good food,great venue for the music weekend,an array of Bands held in the very large garden area,overlooking the picturesque bay of newquay and the harbour.A must for any travellers,wanting a bite to eat and a beer among perfect surrondings.A must visit.

Great pub with a lovely sea view from the beer garden. Staff were friendly and the food was really nice. £10 minimum spend is pretty annoying though, if you're just going for a drink make sure you have cash.

Overlooks the bay and has lots of tables. Kids playgrounds either side and sports tv indoors. Really good food and well.

Nice pub with a great outside space for kids/dogs. Only real downside is the minimum card payment of £10 causing issues if your a couple going for 1 or 2 drinks

We recently stayed at the Black Lion on a short break in Newquay. Our room overlooked the lawn and out to sea. Great views. The room was well presented, tidy and very roomy. We had an evening meal which was perfectly fine. Staff were efficient and very friendly even though they were busy. It's not a gastronomic dining experience but perfectly acceptable British pub food at a fair price. Would go back again.

We went to the black lion after being told about the food by a friend. On the night we visited it was fairly busy but was found a table straight away . The drinks were fairly expensive but about average for where we were. I ordered the 10oz rump steak which was quite expensive at £18. 90 and was quite dry and my partner had a beefburger. The room we were in was quite dark, and on the whole it was fairly average pub food

Very good service with a good knowledge of ales. Did not eat there but the food looked very good. Nice garden with good views.

A great pub and hotel that we always stay in while visiting New Quay the breakfast is lovely.

Food was delicious and accommodated my wife nicely as she’s vegan. Starters mains and deserts are all delicious. Definitely will be going back again! Staff were very kind and helpful.

We had great day on the beach and returned early evening and booked a table for 8.00pm. On arrival our table was unavailable due to clientele drinking at the table, we used the garden and were informed at 830 the table was available. When ordering we were informed there was no chicken meals and no fish - not happy. We ordered our food and was informed on a 30 mins wait. When we returned to our table, approx 5 mins later Mike the owner informed us fish was back on !!! - Order changed, food arrived at 940 !! some 1hr 40mins post our booking -very late. Also, the food was overcooked and the lasagne dry and just edible. The whole experience was very disappointing and the owner was not very apologetic, when he asked why the food was not eaten, we explained the 30 mins wait time and when the food eventually arrived this was far too late to eat - his response was we were not informed on the 30 mins which was not true - no apologises. We will not be eating here again.

Visited here for an evening meal, and of all the restaurants we visited in New Quay this was by far the worst. Food quality was poor, as you can see from the attached photo it was barely edible! Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere: Penwig, Old Watch house, Pepperpot and Bluebell are all far superior.

Came her as a family of six plus a dog on a sunny bank holiday Monday. Plenty of tables available, so chose one outside with a superb view of the bay. Area also had well kept grassed area and a kids playground.

We visit the Black Lion a couple of times a year when we visit relatives. The place is always friendly, the food is always good and the beer is also excellent. On our last visit they had ‘Mojo’ on from the local Mantle brewery. The hotel and bar situated away from the front but has excellent views of Cardigan Bay and a large garden. We’ll certainly be going again.

Ordered 2 meals & drinks. Steak & Ale pie was served with no pastry "We've run out of pastry" the waitress said after delivering it. "Could someone have told us before it was fetched?" I asked. I received a shrug in return. Food was good, but was also charged for a drink I never had, the slimmer man behind the bar had no clue about customer service. Won't return.

Good choice of drinks and good atmosphere in this nice pub. Good food and good service. Shows live football on a number of screens which is great. All in all a good place to go for a beer and a bite.

Really excellent place to go as a family with children. Food was excellent for both adults and children. Normally we’re disappointed with offering for children but my 7 year old son had a 6oz steak and my 9 year old daughter had a great home cooked lasagne, all from the children’s menu. A good pint of real ale and a wide selection of gins topped it off whilst the children played in the large outdoor area. Top quality...maybe go back tomorrow!!

I had the Sunday roast beef which was beautiful, beef was cooked to perfection and the vegetables were lovely. My partner had scampi which was the freshest and extremely tasty. Kids had sausage & chips again very nice and fresh portion sizes are good.

We had gone for a boat trip, and needed somewhere to warm up and this was the perfect spot. Nice burger and chips and my girlfriend had a gammom. Everything was perfect and it was lovely and warm in the bar area. Nice atmosphere as some locals were recounting some fruity stories, glad my boy was too young to understand!! Could have stayed all evening.

As always great food, fitted table of 10 in on the day, food is brilliant ,portion size is great! No complaints at all. Great family friendly pub

We visited on a lovely, sunny Sunday after a walk on the beach. We hadn’t booked a table but staff were quick to find us a table for five. We all had the roast beef and it was excellent. Well cooked meat, plenty of veg and a great choice of drinks at the bar. The views over the sea are really beautiful too. We’ll definitely be back if we visit the area! Good value for money and good, efficient service.

Always pop into the black lion every time we go to New Quay. This place is great if you have kids as it has a huge garden with kids climbing area and quality views of New Quay, plus You can keep an eye on the children from the pub through the window....five minutes of peace! Great sized portions, tasty and always a clean warm pub.

Stopped in at lunch time on New Year’s Eve. Tables were all booked (but untaken) but they found us a spot. Reasonably priced food and drink. The chips are AMAZING!!! Food took over half an hour to arrive despite the restaurant not being that full.

Fantastic food, very tasty first course of soup, main course Christmas dinner lots of meat, plenty of different types of vegetables, roast potatoes and parsnips. Lovely crumble and coffee afterwards in the price. The pub was spacious plenty of room around the table with a great atmosphere through out the building. The staff were friendly and very helpful.

We visited here on 1st November 2018 for our final evening meal of our lovely break in New Quay, Wales. When we arrived, it was pretty busy inside the pub and just about found a table, they brought over the food menus on a clipboard. There was a wide range of choices to choose from. You had to order all your food and drink at the bar, staff were very friendly.

Amazing Friendly staff great atmosphere and food to die for Would recommend a visit. But maybe an idea to book as it gets busy with food as you can imagine.

We visited the Black Lion for our evening meal last night and none of us were disappointed in the food. My only one moan would be that in the restaurant area they don't do waitress service, instead you have to go to the bar and order drinks and food yourself. Which isn't ideal when it's a small area and your having to squeeze in and out of tables. Having said that the team were very friendly and would definitely return to try some more food from their menu.

One of Dylan Thomas' favourite pubs, this hotel has a public bar and dining area with plenty of outdoor dining areas in the gardens overlooking the bay. Food is freshly cooked, well presented and tasty. Child friendly too. Dogs are not permitted inside though, only the outdoor dining areas, which is a disadvantage in bad weather. Friendly waitresses.Good value for money.

Lovely atmosphere, we were made to feel very welcome. Loved sampling the many gins on offer, which were presented very nicely. Food was absolutely delicious, & we didn’t wait long which is great as we were all starving. Highly recommend. We had a lovely table with a view of the sea.

Booked a table for two for Sunday lunch via email, had a prompt reply, no issues booking, arrived at 1pm, were seated quickly, our order of 2 lamb dinners were taken not long after and didn't have to wait long for our dinners to arrive... wow it was absolutely delicious able amount of freshly cooked lamb, which was cooked to perfection the home made yorkshire pudding was so light it melted in the mouth good selection on veg and one of my favourites cauliflower cheese which was also delicious.. Will definitely be recommending to friends and family when they visit.. thank you for our delicious meals..

Had dinner at the Black Lion last Wednesday night. Booked in advance, probably advisable as quite a few of the tables were occupied when we turned up at 7:30. Nice sea-view from our table for two by the window. Craft ale on draft and good wine selection from the bar. We chose rump steak and chicken in madeira sauce for our mains and can recommend both: high quality ingredients and perfectly cooked/seasoned.... most enjoyable food out we've had in a while. Puddings and coffees were of an equally high standard. Attentive service throughout. Highly recommended.

Saturday night and busy but all very satisfactory. Mixed grill fantastic. Drinks of Doombar spot on.

We visited new quay for the day and wanted lunch so I looked on trip advisor and found that we were not far from the black lion. Food was really nice, excellent chips, lovely real ales and friendly staff - job done!

It’s was busy so we sat outside, the outside area was such a mess! Rubbish everywhere which looked like it been there a while. The staff just walked past crisp packets without thinking of picking them up or making any effort to tidy the place. Hope the kitchen is cleaner. Saying that the food was nice.

Good pub grub not far from New Quay harbour. Decent size portions at reasonable prices and a good beer garden. The Welsh Rarebit was good and the Halloumi Burger. Reported to be Dylan Thomas’ favourite pub. We enjoyed it so much we went back the next day.

Struggled to find somewhere in New quay that served locally sourced food, plumped for the Black Lion after not quite knowing what we wanted.

We had a nice lunch here overlooking the sea from the pleasant beer garden. The staff were lovely and the food was delicious. They have a nice little play area for the kids and even have a covered outside area in case it starts to rain. Very nice!

Seaside pub which is really missing a trick. Asked staff some advice and they couldn't be bothered - arguing in front of customers. They could really do with having some cakes or welsh cakes etc (something lighter not a full meal) and investing in coffees. Not everyone wants a pint at Midday on Sunday. Park out the back was lovely but the tables benches were all a bit broken. We wouldn't return.

We visited on Wednesday evening, bar staff and resostafg were very welcoming and helpful.

We happened across this pub on our way out of new quay back to our cottage and it was amazing the staff where brilliant the food was amazing (I recommend the curry) and reasonably priced too

Had a meal here on Sunday and it was pleasant enough. Can't go far wrong with scampi and chips. Friends had the lasagne and said this was lovely - looked home made.

We wanted to have a nice meal for our small family for our 9th wedding anniversary so gave the black lion a try.

Booked at lunch for the evening all fine, when we went in barman said tables over there No 9 and here’s a menu! Not excessively busy but from order to delivery was 40 mins just a bit long. Hard to rate as pub and pub food say 4 but as a restaurant 3 average. Beautiful view over the bay from the garden and prices good.

Always made to feel welcome. Great seating area outside in the garden and inside is cosy and comfortable. Always friendly staff and although we did not eat the food look great. Would definitely eat there next time.

The fish batter was over cooked, mackerel obviously from a supermarket packet and not from the local fish monger as you would expect from a seaside town. Cold egg. However reasonable prices.

A fabulous garden venue, live music and an outside screen. Decent home cooked food but no waitress service. Reasonably priced for a family group of 6.

The hotel is good for a short stay, it’s not very luxurious but okay. You can have a simple meal in the pub restaurant. The beds are good and it’s clean.

After arriving in New quay we chose this place for having dinner and we did not regret that. Service is very friendly and the simply was very good. I personally ordered the cod (£10.90) and a sticky toffee pudding (£5.90) as desert. Absolutely a recommendation.

Spent a lovely afternoon in the sun while the kids played on the play equipment. Lovely surroundings lovely with tv in the beer garden to watch sports. Family and dog friendly.

Visited here with family and friends following the good reviews on here. We had between us the curry, the fish and the burger All agreed that their portions were large, and very tasty Would return again
