Really Friendly Staff & Great Cocktails & Our Dog Loved Being With Us Aswell.

It was one of the best stays I have ever had. Everything was very well thought of. Clean, spacious and chic rooms. The location is a bit far from the centre but it’s near a beautiful park. What not to like?

Unfortunately you get what you pay for: what appears to be a reasonable menu (well I suppose it is, as long as you're not too hungry).

The Black Ivy is my hotel of choice in Edinburgh. The staff, service and quality of rooms, food and drink are excellent. Location is brilliant and the views from all sides/rooms are wonderful.

We had a truly wonderful experience at the Black Ivy. The staff is extremely helpful and kind. We had great experiences with everyone and I wish I could remember all of their names. Collin was very wonderful and helpful. We will definitely stay here again!

Visting for the weekend and had a great Sunday lunch, well cooked and great service. Recommend

Great place to stay if visiting Edinburgh

3rd stay at Black Ivy. My absolute favourite place to stay in Edinburgh. Lovely rooms with such comfy beds. Great food, great decor, great atmosphere all round.

Great location. Amazing staff. Fantastic room. Could not have picked a better location to spend four days in Edinburgh. If you're there over the weekend, the Sunday Roast is a must. 5 stars all around.

Another Sunday lunch at Black Ivy. There’s nothing like going out for Sunday lunch and treating yourself to a Sunday roast. One of our favourite restaurants to do this is Black Ivy at Alvanley Terrace Bruntsfield. We started with a Duck Liver Pate followed by a Chicken Roast and a Scottish Beef Roast. Both roasts were served with a selection of roast vegetables, Yorkshire pudding & gravy. All food was cooked to perfection. The vegetables were still firm and not overcooked which is often the case elsewhere. This was followed by a Dark Chocolate Sundae and all washed down with a bottle of Merlot. The restaurant was warm and the atmosphere warmer. The staff were very welcoming and attentive throughout our visit and always seem genuinely pleased to have your custom. This is a great restaurant, we will be back soon !

Book it! Go here! This place is absolutely fantastic. The service, the food, the people, the atmosphere, everything. You're in a neighborhood with great restaurants, grocery stores shall you need them, lots of parks, and the best shawarma place on the planet. The park nearby is a leisurely golfing area. There's a pub that has golf clubs for you to borrow. And they have beer. If I haven't sold you yet, then you don't belong here anyway. Cheers!

Great place - room, bar and restaurant all first class

Had lunch here when the rugby was on, a little loud and busy but managed to get a seat for 60 mins and had a great lunch, excellent food and a good range of lager/ales

Visited my daughter for one night, upgraded to lovely room with views over the park. Staff v helpful and bar area v relaxing with fire.

I have mixed feelings about our recent stay here. I really didn’t want to give a negative review at all, but there were some things that just didn’t quite feel up to standard. A lot of people have complained about the location, but we quite enjoyed that aspect, 30 min walk into the city centre but it’s through a lovely park. There is free parking on the surrounding streets too which helps. The beds are very comfy and other than a random sock, the rooms were really clean too, however the room was much smaller than expected which made it hard to move with a travel cot there. The hotel kindly provided a travel cot (which is a good job as ours would not have fit at all) but this was broken and had been padded out with a quilt and pillows which is totally unsuitable for a young baby. It’s also worth noting that while this hotel does have a lift, you still have to use stairs too as it is a few town houses stuck together, this made it very difficult to access with a pram. Had I not been with friends, I wouldn’t have been able to actually get to our room at all. The food in the restaurant looked good, however we ended up leaving after ordering drinks as we were unaware the restaurant IS the bar and the music was so loud we couldn’t actually hear the waitress when ordering. We had booked for a few adults and a baby so I feel like this maybe should have been communicated. I fully appreciate having a great bar (and it did look to be a wonderful atmosphere) but this needs to be advertised better as we ended up having to grab a meal deal from the shop and going to bed because it was just way too loud even before the DJ. Overall, a lovely hotel but a very frustrating experience.

Dinner only. Restaurant extremely noisy on the weekend (as they have a DJ) which is hard sometimes to have a conversation but does give a good atmosphere. Food nice enough and staff friendly. They are dog friendly which is a bonus.

A really lovely centrally located hotel with very beautiful rooms, restaurant, bar and delicious food. My lower overall rating however was due to the room being just too hot. We were able to open the window but not turn the heating off in the bathroom which made the whole room too warm even in January. The other issue was that the music in the restaurant was far too loud far too loud in the evenings making it impossible to talk to each other. Having loud music in the bar is understandable, but not in the restaurant. We didn't stay for dessert for this reason.

Went here today for a Sunday lunch 😋 the food was good quality, the beef was so tender. If I was gonna be picky.. I wasent keen on the plates or cutlery. I think for that extra opulence they plate could have been bigger and I love big cutlery when dining out. The portion was good but you need to buy the sides to fill yourself up. The dessert was amazing.. try the brownie 😋 overall this was a lovely treat but to go all out would be an expensive one. Definitely worth a visit though. Staff very friendly, food arrived prompt.

A beautiful hotel in a fabulous location, within easy walking distance to most of Edinburgh's key attractions. It was a pleasure to return to our lovely room of an evening after huge days exploring gorgeous Edinburgh

We stayed here for 3 nights for New Years celebrations. Absolutely loved the room we stayed in and the building is stunning …it was a way out from the city centre but if you love walking it’s a great way to see the city…. Our an real grip was the bar service I know it was new years and it was busy but we waited an age to served and they just didn’t seem that friendly… but other that that lovely place

We had sunday roast here and the food was really lovely! The staff were incredible and brought out dessert for my partners bday for free. The service was lovely and the cocktails are delicious. Definitely worth it!

Lovely place, nice rooms but only complaint was there was a funny smell in the building, don't know if it was just the cooking but that's my only complaint, bed was amazing.

A bit off the beaten track from the City Centre but well worth a visit. Beautifully decorated for Christmas with a really good festive menu. Food was piping hot and delicious. All the staff were very friendly, smiley and efficient. It was a lovely venue to visit and we'll be back soon.

Great place for a Christmas cocktail

Lovely during the Christmas season the building outside of the black ivy is beautiful and very festive. The drinks are just as nice as say the canny man in morningside and roughly the same price. The interior is beautifully decorated and the restaurant looks fabulous. Will definitely take the wife back after the festive period.

We had a wonderful stay at the Black Ivy. It's a warm, welcoming place, the staff could not have been friendlier and the location was great - central and near lots of excellent places to eat.

After asking about booking prior to going was told no bookings upon arriving found tables with reserved signs no explanation. Still really nice place especially at this festive time staff very pleasant

I genuinely have mixed feelings about the Black Ivy. The place looks gorgeous and they must have spent a fortune of xmas decorations. It is nicely positioned just outside the centre and views from the rooms are lovely. We paid £500 for two nights which didn't include breakfast which seems a shame at the price. The vibe is catered for a young crowd and it feels like being on a set of TOWIE. The music is Ibiza-esque even at breakfast which didn't work, for me at least. They are good at what they do and are very busy as a result. I love a lively place, but yearned to come back to base for a pint of real ale next to a log fire after being out all day. I guess It all depends on what you want.

Great service deliceus food nice atmosphere

Stayed overnight with my wife Ann. The room was lovely overlooking the Meadows. Dinner and breakfast were absolutely amazing. Staff were all very helpful and friendly! Will be back !!!

I used to frequent this place with a late friend of mine, but now whenever i pass it, i can't help thinking how wrong it is. the gas heaters blasting out, the plastic floral hedge and flowers attracting the bees and bugs for the wrong reasons, just as the lights do for the moths. Here we are with the scientists shouting at us, saying we have a crisis where we all must do out bit, and this place goes the opposite way! Morally, i cant step in this place again!

Honest review: The hotel is absolutely gorgeous, food delicious and staff is very helpful. The only thing that I think needs to be disclosed while booking is the fact that on Fridays and Saturdays there's a DJ playing in the bar which is directly under the rooms. Getting some sleep during that time is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE. If you are looking to party there and go to sleep at 5 am in a beautiful, clean and charming victorian style hotel - go for it. If you are however up for a quiet relaxing weekend in Edinburgh, this hotel is probably not for you. Although I do recommend it during the week when It's quiet.

Certified legends, great rooms, great taste in decor. However the bar outside can get quite noisy. The reception is also tiny, and no one there sometimes. End up having to search for a staff member around the bar.

We had a very enjoyable meal with good service. I personally thought the meals were a little overpriced.

Stayed 3 nights for the Edinburgh portion of our trip to Scotland. A nice location away from most of the busyness but close enough to walk to public transportation and other attractions. Afternoon tea was a great experience. Very accommodating staff throughout the stay. They even helped arrange an airport transfer at 6am when ours cancelled on us at the last minute. Street-facing rooms were a little noisy in the early mornings.

Popped in for Sunday lunch today, after a few confusions with the order the food arrived and it was absolutely delicious. The way they handled the issues was excellent and definitely will return 🥰

Absolutely fantastic, great food from Startes to Mains And Pudding It was my Husband's Birthday he was only having an espresso instead of dessert Compliments of the chef he got a pudding which said Happy birthday in chocolate sauce with chocolate fudge cake and icecream on top Honestly could not fault anything here. We would definitely be going back 5 start ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍

The Black Ivy was my favorite hotel! My significant other and I stayed in London before going north on a train to Edinburgh and then on to parts north and over to Ireland. The Black Ivy was wonderfully located to walk to all the historical and center of the city. It was the perfect mix of sophistication, and casualness without any airs. They offered great vegetarian fare as well. I would love to return during the festival! And that is where I’d go.

Nice hotel but slightly confusing layout. We went to what looked like the hotel side but had to walk through the restaurant to check in at what looked like the restaurant desk to then walk back through the restaurant to the place we first arrived at. That's my only complaint. Otherwise, lovely location, nice views of Bruntsfield Park and free weekend parking is ideal for a one night stay. Wish I had time to visit the restaurant or have a drink. The outdoor area looks lovely with heaters and blankets for the cooler evenings.

The Black Ivy had great ambience but their roast dinner was very disappointing and I would not recommend it.

I visited for the first time since the hotel was renovated, with my wife and another couple. We had lunch, which was pretty good. The first table we had was beside a noisy group, so on request we were moved to a quieter spot with no fuss. The space is bright and has been really nicely updated, the food was good, and the service was fast and pleasant, so we were happy, and we will be back.

Wij verbleven aan de andere kant van het park en zijn hier meerdere keren geweest. Mooie inrichting, goed personeel, goede hygiëne, goede menu/cocktailkaart. Alles klopt hier tot in de puntjes. Overal aan en over nagedacht. Als we ooit terug komen in Edinburgh blijven we zeker hier overnachten.

It's so hit and miss here. Sometimes it's great but others it's not - went the other day and the food was good but took forever/didn't all come at once. The service was slow. On the plus they did comp us the food that came extra late.

Came here for an overnight stay and breakfast. Room was great, good view of the park. Breakfast was good too.

Wow, what a wonderful find and everything about this place smacks of style, class and quality. The menu had my taste buds tingling and I was not disappointed. The service was exceptional and both the decor and it sounds silly but the cutlery and glassware just felt really nice to hold and use. Stylish, sophisticated and brilliant on every level. Decent menu, staff lovely, but very slow with drink service. I don't understand why 2 pints and a gin & tonic takes so long. It's only themselves who are missing out on sales. It wasn't that there wasn't enough staff, just such a delay. Otherwise, no one should be put off by this, the place is fantastically set out, great food and great choice

Good tasting food, but more expensive than its competitors. Was given choice of 3 different types of chips, but didn't say 2 of them were sides. In other words, we lost our'skinny' chips and still be charged for the replacement chips. Well staffed. 10% ' voluntary' service charge was already billed; the server did not ask whether we wished to pay it and had already put the charge in the card machine and offered it for contactless payment.

This is a really nice place to go for drinks 🍹 The breakfasts have been really good in my experience recently, we have also had a nice lunch midweek and just came for cocktails on the rare occasion that we have found ourselves child free. We have had the Sunday roast in the past and it wasn’t as good as it sounded. roast sirloin was serve medium rare and it wasn’t my favourite. I was warned when I ordered that’s how it would be served so it was served as specified and perhaps opinions will vary. The service is very efficient in here and they take good care of you especially if you have kids with you. It’s a lovely place and reflected in the prices. Perfect for date night.
