Black Bull Hotel in Dumfries & Galloway

We went for a family meal. The service was great and the food was quite good. My son had got the huge ribs, were massive and tasty.my other son and I had the burger, my wife the pasta. Great selection of beers and gins.

Only called in for a quick drink but food looked lovely and staff were very friendly and helpful. The place was cosy

A lovely warm welcome from the staff, excellent food, well presented and good portion size. The BlackBull has a great atmosphere, is warm and cosy on a damp day with options to sit outside when the sun shines. Vegetarian and Vegan options, always good to find in Scotland!

Stopped by on our way back from Edinburgh to Worcestershire. It's a beautiful and cosy restaurant with candles and a fireplace. Lovely staff and the food was delicious. It was a great find on our way home. Will definitely be back when we are visiting Scotland again!

Booked a table for 3 for Mother’s Day lunch to try the new menu at The Black Bull Bistro. We tried the Roast Dinner, Fish n’ Chips and Ribs, followed by Sticky Toffee Pudding, Honeycomb Cheesecake and Apple Pie. The food was ‘Top Notch’ (thanks to the new chef) with clean plates all round. This was no mean feat given the generous portion sizes. We had a lovely Pinot Rose recommended by the Head of Bar and hubby enjoyed the Inch’s cider. The staff were all friendly and attentive. The Bistro is spotlessly clean and welcoming with a lovely atmosphere. The seated bar area is dog friendly, so the next time we pop in (I have to try the crème brûlée) we will take our 2 pooches and they can review the dog menu 😊

Having stayed at the Black Bull hotel a couple of times both of which we had several evening meals and breakfast. I cannot believe the bullying nasty comments, that two people which obviously dinned together have made. Both my husband and I loved our visits the staff are so lovely and made us feel very welcome, the food was lovely and value for money. If anybody is thinking of visiting this lovely establishment you will not be disappointed We will definitely be returning in the near future and are very much looking forward to it

Disappointed to say the least, extremely poor standard of food and a pasta dish is not rocket science to get right. Unhelpful when complained, so don't bother in my opinion !

Called for a drink as we were staying in our caravan on the site nearby. Friendly welcome. 1st class kept Cask Ales. More of a foodie pub & obviously very popular as every table was reserved.

Such a warm and welcoming pub with a roaring fire. Lovely atmosphere. One of the best pubs I’ve visited. The barmaid was really knowledgable about Gin and we chatted about local ones and ways of having it. I would love to visit again to eat there as well as to sit outside on a nice day in the great area there as well. With a gin no doubt! 😀🍸

If you’re hoping for great meal and lovely friendly ambience, then book before they get full. Extremely dog friendly and child friendly. Choice of restaurant area or cosy bar/snug area. Lovely cosy place and most of the food was good, however, my husband and I ordered burgers and they were over cooked and rubbery. The lady came to ask if all was ok and my husband told her the burgers weren’t very nice but she just walked away and didn’t acknowledge our complaint at all. I couldn’t eat my burger (with chilli) the cost was over £16 so not cheap.. The other meals and the starters and deserts were fine, if a little overpriced, but I probably wouldn’t return due to the lack of customer service when mentioning a negative.

It was always a huge loss to Moffat when the Black Bull closed and it is clearly a huge plus that it has reopened, albeit under a new guise. As a reasonably frequent visitor to the town I have memories of the Black Bull being a cracking pub, and the new venture is a very different thing. To be fair, the new owners make no bones about the fact that they are different and now describe the place as a bistro, bar and boutique hotel. It is certainly a smart and rather classy place and if we fancy a meal we would certainly be happy to try them out. As far as the “bar” element of the business is concerned, I applaud the fact that they list this aspect as secondary. It’s important to add however that whereas this could never be described as a pub, and although we were only here for drinks, we were made to feel welcome. When coming out for a beer I generally prefer traditional pubs, and not “foodie” pubs, but we certainly enjoyed sitting here with a couple of beers by the fire and listening to a soundtrack of old crooners. It was refreshingly different.

Absolutely fantastic. Put us up for a night when we were let down by someone else and staff were fantastic. Food was great, really dog friendly (including dog meals), and great atmosphere. Would recommend

If you can get here you should definitely eat here. Absolutely fantastic. Food was fresh and tasted amazing. We were in Moffat for a wedding and decided to give it a go the night before the wedding and it was so good we booked a table to come back the night after the wedding. We’re not locals and it was my first time visiting Scotland but we will definitely be coming back and The Black Bull Inn will definitely be on the list.! Staff were fantastic. We had a terrible experience recently and sent an email to their advertised email address and they can't even be bothered to reply to my complaint. I have called several times to discuss also but never anybody available to speak with me. A shambles of a place, room was dirty and smelly, no dinner, no breakfast and no response. Not a great way to run a business and I speak from experience of 23 years in the trade. Avoid !!

We came into the restaurant about 1240 and took a seat. We were sat for about 20 minutes and not handed a menu or seen to, so I finally asked can we have a menu and the women said she'd have to check they were still serving food, at 1pm, seriously..... anyway they finally gave us our menus and we waited a further 25 minutes to then be asked what we wanted and we both chose the chicken and chorizo fusilli but we couldn't have that because they had run out, at 1pm on a Saturday, seriously.... so i said can you come back in 2 minutes please

Really comfortable room, fairly compact, good bathroom. Good, well kept ales, good pub food also. Staff were very helpful.

Dog was made very welcome which goes a long way for us. Food was delicious and freshly prepared. The deserts where traditional and very tasty. Gin selection was good and bar staff knowledgeable. Tried the local gin which was lovely and ended up visiting the distillery to buy some - but that’s another review!! Highly recommend the Black Bull for dinner. Probably best to book if your looking at a later dinner. We managed to get seated both times we went at 5pm when they opened.

Ci siamo fermati qui per cena per caso, senza aver prenotato, fortunatamente c'era un tavolino libero. Il personale è stato molto cortese, i piatti che abbiamo preso erano buoni, birre buone. L'attesa è stata piuttosto lunga, ma si vedeva che il personale faceva il possibile e comunque il locale era tutto pieno. Una buona cena. La saletta all'ingresso era dedicata a chi aveva un cagnolino, qui ben accetti.

We were staying at the campsite a short distance away so decided to book a table for dinner. We were made very welcome and they made a huge fuss of our dog, which is always a bonus in my book! The owners and staff were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The food was delicious but I was a bit disappointed there were no fishcakes available. So we booked for a second night and I got my fishcakes! Would definitely recommend and we will go back the next time we're in Moffat.

Great stop off on way to Edinburgh from Liverpool. Very well furnished cozy room. Unfortunately no chef available for food but we walked into the town centre & there were other options.

Met up with friends to enjoy a leisurely lunch. Read reviews before visited and didn't quite live up to all I'd read. Lunch menu only given to us which was disappointing as was keen to try the vegan ala carte menu. We were there within a half hour of it opening yet no paninis available. Hour later we saw other diners with paninis!! Burger was quite tasty and cooked to how we all requested. 2 of the party had cheesecake and very much enjoyed it within cream. The waitress was friendly and helpful although we had to find someone to get another soft drink. Table across from us was told 3 times that someone would be back to take their order and they did not looked best pleased. Toilets were very clean and had lovely toiletries. Overall would recommend but they end to up their service a wee bit. Obviously popular with locals as it was packed by the time we left

We didn't eat here but had a few drinks and hats off to the staff, they were so friendly and chatty. Also a great selection of tasty local craft beers on cask and draught. Always good to see local beer in a pub. When we were there they had Dumfriesshire brewery Five Kingdoms

Stopped for food in the lovely beer garden but unfortunately, they weren't serving food outside that particular night. Bit disappointed. Great menu and tasty food - try the haggis neeps and tatties pie it’s delish. Drinks are varied with lots of keg beers, lagers and a cider. Their selection of single malt whiskys is hard to beat. Prices are reasonable but do be careful with the whiskys because they don’t come cheap. Staff are very pleasant and helpful.

Used as a one night stopover heading north. Staff were exceptional (mix of Experienced managers and youngsters but seems their emphasis is on training the kids rather than exploiting them :) )-. Rooms are modern and well appointed and decent value. Nice pub and garden with friendly atmosphere, tasty food and good drink selection & knowledge. Brilliant historical pub. Clean and welcoming and has won awards for being dog friendly. The good is good quality and freshly cooked. Decent sized portions and piping hot. Prices are what you'd expect in a Town centre; however, the desserts are very pricey at £8.95. There is no parking facilities but the town centre itself has free parking and it's only a short walk to the pub. Overall I would highly recommend

Excellent Easter Sunday lunch let down by poor attentiveness. Food was really good , and lovely ambience, but the service was really very disappointing. We only got menus and a drinks order after we got fed up waiting 30 minutes and had to ask . Then after our , albeit , Excellent lunch , no-one came near us to ask if we wanted other drinks , dessert or coffees . What was so frustrating was that the owner and staff , when they did engage , were so friendly. Not only did the Black Bull miss out on a tip , but they also missed out on selling us dessert and coffees . And I doubt we'll be back . J
