Bistro 23 in Northumberland

Popped in for a late lunch and it was spot on. Crab sandwich packed with meat and kipper with gluten free bread. Lovely gf lemon drizzle and unreal carrot cake. We will be back

We called in for a coffee and cake. My husband had the sticky toffee cake which he said was delicious, I had a scone with jam and butter. My flat white was just how I like it, skinny and decaf, not many coffee places can do skinny so I was very happy. Staff were happy in their work and quick to take order and return with order. Along corridor to toilets there is a large selection of paintings by a local artist of local attractions/scenery. We bought one of these paintings which are reasonably priced and lovely. Painting was bubble wrapped for us to transport safety home. All in all a lovely experience. Thanks

Just returned from eating here tonight after we were lucky enough to get a cancellation as it was fully booked for the nights we're here. Can see why that is - we've just had the best meal we've had in a long time and we eat out alot. The restaurant is beautifully decorated simple but v stylish but unpretentious and the menu is fantastic with mostly locally sourced dishes with a twist and beautifully presented and taste just divine - starters- great / the lamb and fish & veg we had for mains were perfectly cooked and delicious/the desserts of chocolate torte and lemon posset just out of this world just melted in the mouth - this restaurant is on a par with the Michelin starred restaurants where we come from in North Yorkshire and they deserve such an accolade. The owners and the chef/staff should give themselves a massive pat on the back for providing such excellent high quality food and service - very well recommended - hopefully they can keep up such high standards

My wife and I pre booked Saturday night and were treated to a 3 course delight of the most amazing food. The service and charm of this lovely place is first class.

Visited here midweek with my partner and we were not disappointed! It felt a very safe place to be during these strange times with tables well spread out and sanitising stations. As for the food, both our main courses were delicious and cooked perfectly and we couldn’t resist a dessert! The service matched the food and we felt very relaxed. If you’re in the area I would definitely recommend a visit! Cannot fault it

We were looking for places to eat during our recent short break in Alnwick and after much research decided to book Bistro 23 and are so glad we did. It is a small restaurant at the heart of this lovely village and has a wonderful ambiance painstakingly created by its owners Alistair and Anna who make a superb front of house team.As foodies we have dined at many good restaurants and Bistro 23 would undoubtedly be in the top 3. The main fish courses of Hake and Monkfish we enjoyed on our first visit were cooked to perfection as were the fresh vegetables. The quality of the food was backed up by the equally excellent service. The meals on our second visit 2 days later were equally impressive.Bistro 23 will certainly be top of the agenda on our next trip up North!

Went for dinner during October. Incredibly impressed with the Covid arrangements and tables spaced out well. Alastair and Anna are fabulous hosts. Always aware when tables need attention and the my deal with a busy service with warmth and skill. The food was excellent. I had a really well presented and tasty charcuterie board then monkfish main. Excellent. This is the most perfect bistro in a perfect location.

Would highly recommend...another lovely meal at our favourite Northumberland restaurant..great food (all locally sourced), great service from a very friendly couple in a covid safe and relaxed environment. Had tea and pie in the Tea Cosy Room. Very covid compliant. Good cup of tea. The custard with the apple pie could have been hotter for my taste. Very sweet. Nice atmosphere, good friendly sevice.

After having a weeks holiday in alnmouth, we ate out each night. Although we ate at nice places this restaurant was the best by far. The relaxing atmosphere along with the efficient and friendly staff make it a must visit. The food is beautiful, don’t expect bar grub, it is a little bit pricey but well worth it. A warning that if you are planning on going you must book weeks in advance.

Well controled Covid precautions. The cakes are so good, mars bar slice, carrot cake, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Great service with a smile.

Bistro 23 was recommended to us by another restaurant which hadn’t reopened since the pandemic and we were not disappointed. It looked to me like a family run place and the service was very good, also nice to see them taking proper covid precautions. The menu wasn’t huge which as always a good sign in my book and all of the food we had was excellent.

We rarely give 5* reviews but Bistro 23 deserves it. We went twice (advance booking essential) during our week’s stay in Alnmouth. Excellent cooking with flexibility on menu substitutions for dietary needs sourced from local products. Charming friendly and knowledgeable husband and wife team out front. Also in these difficult times good coronavirus protection - table spacing, hand sanitiser etc.

I should have guessed from the name 'Tea Cosy Tea Room' that tea is their speciality, not coffee. I ordered an Americano that was so weak that I asked for an 'extra shot' to make it drinkable. I'm so used to high quality coffee thanks to Atkinsons in my home town of Lancaster, that I forget that not everyone expects, or even likes, their Americano to have some froth on top. Fair enough, but what I didn't expect was to be charged for the privilege of bringing it up to the standard of all the major coffee chains (which isn't a high bar). Our bill for 1 Americano and 1 latte came to almost £8. My wife paid the bill without dissent, and there was a queue so I didn't want to make a complaint, so I hope this was a one off mistake.

Very tasty menu, we would have chosen anything (and everything) on there. I had the pork belly starter and my wife had the crab and shellfish and both were beautiful and not too filling. I then had the lobster special which was very tasty (and the chef cracked it beforehand!) and my wife had the beef which was really tender. The deserts topped off a great meal, the lemon posset was super lemony and tasty and the chocolate tort was great.The hosts are really friendly and helped us out with some local sightseeing trips. Free parking outside the restaurant too. Some places it’s 2 hours max and free after 6pm but most is completely free.

My wife and I have been regularly visiting this restaurant for over 10 years and it just get better. Both Anna and Alistair are excellent hosts, the food is consistently excellent, great fish dishes and great wines. Most importantly, at the moment with Covid, we felt very safe. Highly recommend eating here.

We were warmly greeted upon entering, our contact details were taken & we were able to sanitise our hands before being shown to our table. We had a bacon stottie & a goat's cheese salad, the stottie was huge with the best part of a pack of bacon in it, delicious...my partner's salad was delicious too she informed me, one of the tastiest she had had. Pleasant views across the road to the old church. Would highly recommend. Social distancing was managed very well as the restaurant began to fill up.

Our first visit here and to Alnmouth and we had a fabulous three course meal. This was pre-booked in advance for us as there is a waiting list (we know why! Its amazing!!) The food is delicious,hot and of very high quality and well presented.The owners were very welcoming, friendly & professional...we loved it. On our next visit to Alnmouth we will be prebooking without a doubt.

Fantastic food & friendly service - definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed gorgeous crab sandwiches and crab & crayfish salad and some delicious cakes. We were remembered and made very welcome by the lovely friendly staff, even though we haven’t visited the area for a couple of years. Excellent value and highly recommended!

Managed to get a table after a short wait, the service and food was excellent however, when the bill came it was £11.00 too much on first querying it I was told it was correct, I was no convinced and returned to confront the member of staff, after a 10 minute wait they decided I was correct and apologised returning the overcharged monies

The food was excellent: we had beef and lamb and chocolate torte and the cheeseboard for dessert. We enjoyed everything but it was the attentive service and the nice atmosphere that equally added to the evening. We had booked after coming to this restaurant previously when we were on holiday and would return without hesitation, highly recommended.

We enjoyed a delightful evening meal at Bistro 23 during our recent stay in Alnmouth. Everything about the evening was excellent from the pleasant attentive staff, the ambiance and the delicious food, which we could not fault at all. We would certainly recommend that you give Bistro 23 a try if you are staying in the area. A tip would be too book in advance.

We ate here 3 times during our recent stay in Alnmouth - every meal was fantastic! It's difficult to pick out a favourite as every aspect was perfect...taste, presentation, quality, etc, etc. And service provided by the owners is a bonus....so friendly and helpful. We will definitely return as soon as we're back in Alnmouth.

What a wonderful experience it was to have dinner at Bistro 23. The welcome was warm and generous and the really buoyant atmosphere continued.Fabulous menu choices made for a very tasty evening meal. There were 4 of us and we all loved our meals.It takes really hard work and energy to be positive and engaging hosts and Bistro 23 could teach a lot of the hospitality world how to do it! Agree with the many rave reviews. The chancellor kindly helped with the bill so that was a bonus, but even at “normal” price you would not grumble. Great food (we both had fish dishes). Efficient, friendly service. Thanks!

Visited this cafe with my parents and children and the menu and staff catered for all of us. The food was fresh and really tasty and the cakes were very popular with all of us. The staff were really friendly with the kids and made us feel very welcome. Would definitely go again if we return to Alnmouth.

We enjoyed a gorgeous dinner at Bistro 23. We felt confident that the staff had attended to all the current Covid-19 guidelines. The food was fresh and delicious; the house Sauvignon Blanc was good too. Staff were friendly and attentive. I would definitely return.

Having read the great reviews on here, we called in last week, one afternoon (it was fully booked in the evenings for ten days!) to check it out.We both chose to try their crab sandwich on brown bread, along with the salad trimmings and some white house wine. The venue looks delightful with its lovely stripped wooden ceiling. Our waitress Lilly was excellent and very entertaining. Our meal was perfect, with lots of crab meat (both white and brown) in the filling. We decided that this had to be just a taster and that we have definitely got to return in the evening. Well done for providing such an excellent place!

Great food, lovely ambience and very friendly. I had the cod loin served on a bed of rissoto it was delish we would love to go again. Would be a great place to go to for a special celebration. Our excuse was that we were on our holidays!

Ate here twice on our vacation, you need to book. It’s gets very busy. Delicious food, great hosts. The owners were away on our second visit, the food and service was still spot. Highly recommend this restaurant, wishing you well for opening during the day and more evenings soon. We’ll be back next year.

We were fortunate to have made an on-line booking for Bistro23 having seen the previous excellent reviews prior to the lockdown restrictions........and it did not disappoint.Faultless and extremely personable service, and equally impressive food, especially the whole lobster that we thought was excellent value.Really good atmosphere with all socially distanced tables filled, not only for this night but also the rest of the week.Noticeable throughout the evening how many of the diners were local and obviously regular visitors, always a good sign.From previous reviews it seems as if it is very much business (and very high standards) as usual - good luck for the rest of the year.

We have been going to this special little Bistro for at approx 15 years. They consistently provide delicious food. Service is always excellent. The owners are there most nights and you can really feel the passion to deliver an outstanding experience. We keep trying other local restaurants but always want to return to The Bistro - our firm favourite!

The Tea Cosy Tea Rooms is their daytime offering and it’s top drawer. Just had new bench seating and the decor is lovely right up there with the 5* cakes. Cannot fault it apart from it’s not dog friendly even during the day.

What a fantastic little place. Booked a mid week date night and certainly wasn't disappointed. Lovely ambience with friendly staff. The fresh fish was cooked to perfection and the chicken beautifully flavoured. Puddings were light and plentiful. Very reasonably priced for a luxury dinner. Would like to wish this place a successful season.

This is a small family run business that functions as a cafe in the daytime and in the evening - generally Wednesday and Saturday (please check first) - becomes a cosy restaurant. The welcome was refreshingly warm. The menu is restricted which I regard as a good sign as the effort is not too thinly spread - approx five starters and five mains and there were a couple of specials on the night we were there: a scallop starter - very generous and a locally-sourced lobster main (see photo). A good wine list and all sensibly priced. Would definitely return.

My husband and I enjoyed a gorgeous meal here on the 25th Jan 2020. It was busy but very well managed, the atmosphere was lovely, a nice buzz about the place. The stottie bread was just incredible! Would highly recommend and we will be back!

Stopped here by chance after chilly January walk - we had been intending to lunch @ well reviewed Scotts but found it shut for week - however this cosy cafe did Alnmouth proud!!Delicious local crab meat on toasted wholemeal seeded stotie (North East bread Roll) with salad . Partner had Pan haggerty washed down with 2 warming pots of loose leaf tea with namesake - cute tea cosies. Served very efficiently by a smiling relaxed attentive waitress - even looking after 4 +? tables. Nothing pretentious as was said- just quality , local , tasty and affordable.

After a blustery Sunday morning walk along the beautiful Alnmouth beach, we discovered Bistro 23 in the Main Street of Alnmouth. (‘Alun-mouth’)On Sunday mornings it wonderfully transforms into The Cosy Tea Room and to be quite honest, it absolutely hits the spot! Notably, there a couple of other places in Alnmouth in the Main Street, but of course they were shut on Sunday. We’ve tried both of them a couple of times in the past and they had been only just about average at best, so foolishly, we anticipated a similar grin and bear it experience from Bistro 23. We just needed a hot drink after our walk so thought let’s try it.And thank goodness we did!A lovely ambiance, rustic, contemporary decorations, none of that old chintzy tea room rubbish, with a simple, but brilliantly thought through menu that totally delivers. After a brief and smiley welcome from waiting staff, we immediately felt like it was going to be good and set about our menu choices. A proper and Full English at £9, you work your way to smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, or why not opt for a Bacon Stottie, (a VERY large soft bread cake) with 3 good chunks of bacon that will still feed an army. And it’s all cooked properly. No ‘greasy spoon’ rubbish here, the bacon was easy to eat with crispy edges with no lumps of fat hanging off, eggs fried properly, beans that were hot (and not re-microwaved) perfect scrambled eggs on toast, (ordered by my wife) which was also brilliant and the tea was served in a proper pot, not a metal catering pot. I opted for a latte coffee which would put most famous name coffee houses to shame, served in tall glass. And of course, we left with a doggy bag of a slice of millionaires shortbread from the cake table just because it look so good.I’m absolutely delighted that we found this place after living in Alnwick for 3 years and not really knowing about it so it’s a wonderful secret. It was exactly the type of place we were looking for after our walk! Well done Cosy Tea Room Team! We will become regulars!!

The ambience of the bistro was cosy and the staff very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious. The prawn and crayfish ravioli, lentil casserole, chicken and blue cheese risotto and lemon sponge were all faultless. Would highly recommend.

Visited on a Saturday night and it was full so I was glad we had booked. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The food was all very good, the only criticism was that all of the dishes were very rich with no lighter options which meant we couldn’t face dessert which was a real shame as they looked great! The lamb shank was particularly good, tender and delicious.

If I had visitors from overseas and wanted to show them good English cooking I would take them here.it has no pretensions ,no nouvelle cuisine , but instead good traditional food -soups,casseroles , crumble , custard -cooked beautifully using local products,with plentiful portions and at very reasonable cost .

Booking is essential as they are not open every night. The decor is absolutely charming. Dined on seafood starter, lobster thermidore and cheeseboard - all excellently presented and delicious. Service was friendly and welcoming. Would definately return.

We had a lovely evening out at this intimate and classy restaurant. Food was gorgeous and the staff attentive and helpful. The relaxed atmosphere made a meal out for two much more of a memorable occasion for us - thank you. We were here last year, obviously this year and will be back next year.

A deservedly popular bistro where booking is essential, at least in the holiday period. Only opens in the evening two nights a week, and operates more as an upmarket cafe during the day. By concentrating on a select range of menu options, they maintain a high standard of quality offerings which cater for most tastes. For instance, there were two catch of the day options as well as three meat and two vegetarian choices. Desserts were also very well chosen. Despite being busy, service was slick but friendly and there were enough options on the wine list to satisfy most people. Overall a very good experience and thoroughly recommended.

This is the second time I have called here for brunch with my elderly parents. Anyone will tell you that the ambience is great and the food superb, but what makes it 5 star for me was the friendly, relaxed way Lily dealt with my mum who has Alzheimer's! Not only was she fab at her job but made a point of encouraging my parents ( who are local) to come to a social group on Wednesday mornings. I really felt she went above and beyond, cheery without being patronising! A huge asset to a business which is already a great asset to Alnmouth. Well done! Thankyou.

We three girls had an excellent meal last Thursday, seafood night. The food was delicious . Beautiful lobster bisque. The restaurant was full of people who had made the effort to come out for a lovely evening. Both the host and hostess chatted to all the clientele, some of which were obviously regulars and repeat customers. Overall an excellent night and pretty good value. Thank you

We spent three nights in Alnmouth and on Saturday night we’d managed to get a table here for dinner. The food and service was fantastic. The haddock Mac and cheese was very tasty as was the pork. Well worth a visit but be sure to book, it was a full house when we visited.

Most days Bistro 23 operates as a tea room but on Wednesdays and Saturday evenings it transforms into a very attractive restaurant with a great atmosphere.

We visited this twice during our stay in Warkworth, which is commendation enough – given a choice, we’re quite fussy about where we eat and drink. Our first visit was purely for coffee – which was good – at which point we decided to return for lunch. We each enjoyed the subsequent lunch – my crab sandwich was particularly good – and we even treated ourselves to a cake, which we rarely do.

We went on a Thursday night which was there fish night. We had the lobster Bisque followed by half a Lobster Thermidor. Both were excellent and very tasty. Good atmosphere and a great buzz to this restaurant. We had a very enjoyable evening. Best to book in advance.

Myself and my 5 friends have all just had a lovely meal. 2 have had fillet of sea trout cooked perfectly. All the others had the Northumberland beef which was tender with a rich flavoursome gravy. On holiday in Alnmouth for 2 weeks, during our first week had lunch at the Tea Rooms which doubles as Bistro 23 in the evening. The owners have got the combination absolutely spot on, as I remarked to my wife, you’d never know you were in the same building,

Happened on this lovely little restaurant which is Bistro 23 on 4 nights per week and The Tea Cosy during the day as I was looking for a parking space in this quaint Northumbrian town by the sea. It was mid-morning and we wanted a coffee. A charming local girl looked after us so well that I was tempted by the Craster kipper with homemade brown bread as my late breakfast. It was cooked on high setting in the microwave for just over 2 minutes, served with a lemon slice and was utterly delicious. Afterwards, I went to Craster and ordered 10 pairs of said kippers from E.Robson & Sons to be sent by mail to my home in the south of England!! This was such a lovely restaurant that I must return to try Bistro 23 in the evenings.

We've eaten here twice this week. First time had the slow cooked northumbrian beef and the vegetarian option, second time had the lobster and the sea trout. Both meals were very good beautifully presented. Very friendly helpful staff

Excellent service, great atmosphere. The dining area is small but not over filled giving it a really homely feel. Food was absolutely fantastic, can’t rate it highly enough. Also they were really understanding with some fussy food requests.

We ate at this restaurant twice whilst staying in Alnmouth. We were made to feel very welcome on both occasions by the propritors, who showed a real interest in all guests.

We visited for an evening meal with some friends whilst we were staying in Alnmouth. A friendly welcome from the Owners when we arrived. By day it is a cafe which with the help of crisp cotton tablecloths is turned into a nice restaurant serving top notch food. The menu is limited to 5 items per course, but we all agreed we would have happily tried everything! I always worry with extensive menus that the food will be frozen or heated up but no such thing here with everything freshly prepared with first class local ingredients. I had sea bass which was as good as I have had anywhere. Highly recommend. I would definitely book as far ahead as possible to ensure you get a table it is very popular.

We visited Bistro 23 again when we stayed in Alnmouth, we have been coming to this restaurant for the past 6 to 7 years when we are on holiday, we have never had anything other than a superb meal.

Just had a lovely three course meal at Bistro 23. Well priced and good attention to ceoliac condition. The staff were lovely and it's well worth a visit day or evening!!

Lovely cafe during the day and bistro in the evening. we visited for lunch as we saw there was a seafood platter on the menu. it's a very old building opened up retaining lots of the original features. it was pretty quiet on Sunday so we had a leisurely lunch of the platter and tea. Well presented, absolutely super fresh. We loved it. while we were there we chose to buy a framed limited edition print which will remind us of our trip to Alnmouth. We decided to go back again to try their salad and pan haggerty which were just as good and we bought another framed print!

Superb food, attentive service, super atmosphere! We had our last dinner of our week's holiday in Alnmouth at Bistro 23. All our eating-foibles and intolerances were catered for. Every course, every dish was perfectly cooked. We had our grandchildren with us (ages 9 and 7) and they were made to feel very welcome. We wished we had eaten there every night, but we know for our next visit to Alnmouth!

Lovely little restaurant where you will need to book (probably). We went on a wet Thursday in May and it was full! Very soon it was obvious why - the service and food are excellent. The prices are not cheap, but are very good value. In the south you would pay the same at an anonymous chain restaurant. Here you get local sea food, beautifully cooked. We had a lobster and sea trout - I don’t remember a better cooked fish. Book before you leave home for your holiday.

Great food, great service, lovely atmosphere....spent the whole evening there and enjoyed every minute. The owners are very hands-on and friendly - made us feel very welcome. I wish we could have eaten there every night of our stay, but this gem is only open 2 nights a week at present.

Lovely food, friendly staff and consistently good. We always return here whenever we visit Alnmouth. We would definitely recommend.

This lovely place is also a tearoom during the daytime and the bistro openings are limited based on the season. In May it is only open on Wednesday and Saturday. The place was fully booked. The staff are lovely. The menu is limited but has excellent choice and was really delicious. We really enjoyed the ambience and our meal was lovely.

This tea room by day turns into a proper restaurant at night.
