We visited this little cafe twice. The first time we got some delicious takeaway coffee and the second time we dropped in for some ice cream just as they were closing. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, even if the doors were about to close! We sat outside in the little secluded garden to the rear of the bookshop which is also worth a visit.

Wigtown has many cafes but who can resist a cafe named 'The Beltie'. This animal is new to my husband and I, we thought they were just so unusual, we could see a large group of them from our cottage in which we were staying, and just enjoyed the view every day. The staff are exceptional, smiley and chirpy. We looked forward to a Cheesy Croque at lunch time......SOLD OUT...so sad, but the carrot and Kale Soup was delicious so we forgave them with a smile

We popped in here for a hot chocolate after our walk. We were drawn by the very reasonable prices (£2 a hot chocolate). The welcoming staff confirmed they were dog friendly so we went in! The cafe area is nice and light. The staff straight away brought over a bowl of water for our dog which was well received. We then opted to have a scone each, as we thought £1.75 for a homemade scone was very tempting! We had a limited budget coming away, so the reasonable prices of this cafe meant we could enjoy a hot drink and scone, so thank you!

I went to this bookshop- café during the book festival, they opened for all the days of the festival what was quite thoughtful. The bookshop is not very big, but it has interesting books. I asked the young waitress some questions about the menu and she kindly answered them. The chocolate biscuit is sublime. Recommend, I will go back.

Oh dear... We had fairly high expectations, having been told by somebody it was a nice place. The cafe itself is pleasant enough, but the lunch was a terrible disappointment. Four of us sat in the outside yard as it was a very warm day. I'm all for nature, but this area really needs a gardeners touch. We all ordered cheese toasties and a lot of tea for four. The toastie here has been reinvented. Forget the crimped edge triangles oozing melted cheese; instead imagine two slices of toast with a meagre handful of grated cheese, and mine, being a cheese and onion toastie, having five small slivers of red onion. Joining it on the plate were two cherry tomato halves, and several salad leaves with a light wash of thin vinaigrette. For £6-50. That's mean by any standards. The tea for four was one pot, no extra hot water as most places do, a small jug of milk, and four old cracked China cups. We were asked if we needed any sugar- doesn't that just come in its own little pot? Apparently not. We were provided with 4 small sachets of white sugar, and 4 of demerara, because you have that in tea. Don't you? I didn't complain, because it was my daughter's birthday, and the look of disappointment was already enough. What a shame. Just plain mean with everything. Four cheese "toasties" and tea for four...£34-00.

The owner is breathtakingly rude. I picked up a book that was clearly old, with heavy foxing on the fore-edge and no price. I couldn't find an assistant in the shop, so went to the cafe and politely asked where the price would be. The person I spoke to, who I later found out was the owner was a bit off-hand, but clearly busy, so I waited for him to come round to the shop. He then told me in an incredibly off-hand manner that the book was obviously new (??!), I should have known where to find the price and couldn't I see that he was busy. I replied that since he was clearly too busy for customers we wouldn't trouble him any further and we made to leave the shop. At that point he started a diatribe about how we were to get out of his shop and never come back. His parting shot was "go on, sling your hook"! So were we a pair of typical troublemakers? No, just a retired library assistant browsing with her sister. If he treats all his customers like that I don't think the business will last much longer.

As a local we decided to try the cafe out. Husband visited with our daughter and asked if the soup was smooth which it wasn’t an suggested that when it wasn’t that they would perhaps have a sausage roll or something that she liked. The owner stated that if they were after fried food to try cobwebs across the road. Shocking attitude. We’ve tried cobwebs very friendly. Other serving staff were lovely but owner perhaps needs to take some customer service tips from his own staff and the owners at cobwebs. Off to Bladnoch distillery instead and won’t be recommending to our holiday cottage guests !

As I'm allergic to cheese asked politely if they did any other sandwiches other than a cheese toastie. The gentleman behind the counter launched into a tirade about how annoying customers were who wanted to make up their own menu. I get he was busy, I get the menu just said cheese toastie and no other sandwiches but I wouldn't have asked unless I was allergic. If he had replied with a pleasant no, sorry, i would probably have had a piece of cake or something instead. As it was we left, as did a couple of other people in the queue who had witnessed the outburst. On a positive note the cafe looked welcoming, is obviously popular and is dog friendly.

I don’t normally do bad reviews but I felt this deserved a mention. A microwaved (thin) slice of cheese on bread described as a “Croque” (£6.50), an unseasoned soup which wasn’t the flavour we were told it was, and some bad coffee which certainly wasn’t the flat white we ordered. All of this with a background commentary of complaining about the customers, us included. Maybe it was a bad day, but if you want to run a book shop and can’t be bothered running a cafe, don’t bother running a cafe.

As you go in there’s a cracking wee book shop with comfy chairs for the browser. Then there’s the cafe/gallery with a good selection of all home made cakes, snacks, drinks and light meals. My fav is the white hot chocolate with some of their excellent fruit cake for a mid morning break on wet days. There’s Russian Caravan and Earl Grey tea if like me your no a fan of bog standard tea. Out the back is a lovely garden where you can sit sheltered from the Solway winds and rise in the sunshine. Anndra, the owner, makes all the food himself and if your really lucky he’ll talk to you in the Gaedhlig. A wonderful, Scottish tea room, full of character and good things to eat.

We visited Beltie for a snack lunch. We went through to the delightful little garden with our 2 dogs. My friend went back inside to get a menu to be told brusquely by a middle aged man behind the counter that they were on the table. They weren’t. We both enjoyed our food, served by 2 delightful young women who could not have been more charming and helpful. Afterwards back inside my friend approached the same man to offer payment. He said curtly ‘over there’, pointing to the register. So for us an otherwise good meal in a lovely setting was marred by the rudeness of this person. We don’t know who he was, whether owner or not. But he was typical of the kind we’ve all met on occasion where you wonder why they are in a service industry at all, dealing with the public. For this business to have a long term future he would be well advised to steer clear of the front of house.

I came for the book festival and under the advice of a friend went here a few times to have lunch and read. Each time I came I went to pay the owner for my food he would lean over to one of his employees and whisper something in their ear making them laugh at me. I understand that the gay men who own it our working in customer service which is a miserable profession to be in, and discussing the people that come into your cafe is how you pass the time of day, but I think its always better to wait until the customer is out of sight before doing it as its quiet nasty, and the main reason I never went back. A wee tip to cafes which have counter service: make that very clear, and keep an eye out for someone who obviously hasn't realised. I sat down in Beltie Books in a corner table and seemed to see the waiter taking orders on an iPad, so I waited. And waited. Eventually, I approached a member of staff, said I was waiting to order, and waited some more. The waiter cleared tables around me without acknowledging my presence. We were really excited to visit this cafe as it looks lovely and inviting from the outside. Indeed, it has a cosy atmosphere with a delightful little bookshop at the front, which is very systematically organised; we could have spent many hours in there! The cafe is in a little conservatory area around the back, and the staff were pleasant and efficient. We ordered the soup, which came with this home-made delicious bread that was somewhere between a croissant and a potato cake in texture and flavour; it was wonderful! The soup was unfortunately a little disappointing; it was 'carrot and rice', which seemed an interesting combination, but would have been fine were it not for all the coriander floating around on the surface. It was also quite watery. There wasn't a huge amount of choice on the menu. But the tea was very lovely, and in delightful china cups. We would come back for tea and cake in the future as opposed to lunch, but it's a lovely little spot and I'd recommend paying a visit.

Went here for first (and last) time on a visit to the famous book town - Wigtown. On first impression it was clean with plenty of tables, except none of them were occupied, it was a Monday lunch time. The menu was very limited, three options for a meal and a soup, and one of them was goats cheese which is an acquired taste. It seemed to be vegetarian which didn't bother us. We opted for Croque (something) which was basically cheese on toast. It came with salad and couscous which had mint in it, another acquired taste. For £6.50 it was over priced. It took ages to arrive well over half an hour, perhaps the bread was being baked?! In all that time still no other customers came in. The tea was nice, made with tea leaves and served in a china cup. One of the men serving kept swearing (not to us) and this was unnecessary and unprofessional.

This café/book shop has plenty of character along with their very own dog to welcome all visitors. Gorgeous day when we visited, so relaxed in the sunny, airy café and enjoyed our coffee and scones. The host was very informative and friendly. A lovely start to our holiday down in the south-west.

Very basic food. Rude proprietor who has overwhelming B.O. He was not happy I just had coffee, despite the fact there was nothing on his menu I could eat.

We visited Beltie Books when on holiday in the area. The owner was helpful, chatty and good baker! I had a gluten free cake with my coffee,so that was a plus point. I bought a book for a very reasonable price. I would advise anyone visiting Wigtown to visit this book shop .

Had lunch here on the last day of the Wigton Book Festival. The cafe was very busy but staff were efficient and friendly. The chef who made the goats cheese and leek flan took the time to speak to me. Very impressive.

Had coffee here with my husband at the weekend during The Wigtown Book Festival. The whole experience was marred by one of the owners who was rude when I went up to the counter to order. Told snappily to "Sit down" which we had already done and been told to order at the counter! This man told me he didn't take the coffee orders and to go to another member of staff! There were no notices telling customers where to stand or who to Oder from. Another gentleman behind me was confused by the order system.Another member of staff indicated an apology to me when he saw how the owner spoke to me. I have been in here before at the festival time and had no problem. Sorry but I won't be back. Sad because the rest of the staff are lovely.

A lovely wee cafe at the back of a quirky wee bookshop. The cakes and quiches are all homemade in the Aga in the kitchen by the owners. On a sunny day there is nowhere nicer in Wigtown to have a coffee while reading your new books. And on a rainy day the coffee and Bara Brith keep you smiling as you listen to the rain on the roof!Kids might find the lunch choices challenging but the cookies and cakes are perfect for them and in the good sized cafe buggies aren't a bother.Lovely

We have been to Wigtown many times, being avid book collectors and we always have lunch here. The bookshop is nicely organised and clean with knowledgeable staff - no dusty old shelves here! The cafe is brightly lit, very clean and serves local food all beautifully cooked. It's reasonably priced. Highly recommended both for eating and browsing!

We were touring the Wigtown peninsula as being in the car allowed you to see some of the spectacular scenery (particularly along the east coast) whilst staying dry. By the time we reached Wigtown it was late afternoon and a surprising amount of the tea shops were closed. We managed to park at the far end of the town and happened to be almost opposite this establishment. From the front it looks like a traditional 'older style' book shop - small and fairly dark (that's not a criticism; it's how I like my book shops!). However, attached to the back was a modern extension with glass doors across one end. As a result it was bright, clean and inviting. Fantastic! We only stopped for cake and drink but the service was great and the cake delicious. Our daughter highly recommends the white hot chocolate! The cafe also had wifi, which given the very limited phone/internet in these parts was very welcome!

We came to the "book capital of Scotland" & had an enjoyable afternoon browsing the multitude of bookshops. However, we were on holiday with 2 dogs, so someone was always outside with them. This place had a sign on the door saying "dogs welcomed" so we took them in & had a great coffee & cake stop. The coffee was a proper mug for a max of £2, a proper pot of tea was only £1.50 (with tea strainer, no tea bags). Amazing chocolate cake for only £2 as well. The lunches also were homemade & looked amazing, well worth a visit. Finally, a place that realised that dogs are not allowed in FOOD PREERATION AREAS, most cafes think this means places that SELL food, but it does not. As a dog owner it was amazing to sit & have great food at great value with them present. The 2 hosts were very chatty & pleasant too, this place is a must visit!

This bookshop has a wonderful small cafe at its rear which opens out onto a sheltered and sunny (if you're lucky as we were) garden. We had tea (china tea service) with delicious bara brith. A perfect stop on our cycle round the area. Service was excellent and very friendly and we were given useful information about cycling in Wigtownshire.

As other have stated this little cafe is tucked away behind a bookshop. You enter a modern clean cafe with the added bonus of bi-fold doors opening out onto a lovely garden area with additional seating. Menu is small but all freshly prepared with care. Prices are on the tourist side but friendly service and attention to detail make this an excellent find!

One of many book shops in Wigtown (Scotland's Hay-on-Wye). However, Beltie (named after the local Belted Galloway cows) has a little cafe, and this is a gem. A really good range of food (I had a smoked venison panini, which was wonderful), along with a good range of drinks.Friendly service in a nice, clean place.

This cafe is tucked behind a bookshop, a short distance from the public library. The outside suggests that the cafe may be minimalist, it’s anything but. You step through the quaint bookshop (I had no time to explore) to an extended sitting area that spills out into a secluded, suntrap garden. I was joined by the owner’s dog who was lovely company - but companionship driven by inside knowledge re the delights on my plate rather than anything I had to offer, I suspect.I ordered the Croque Cairnsmore (local cheese roasted on crusty bread), which was delicious, and the waldorf salad, one of two salads accompanying the meal, was an unexpected surprise. It included quality ingredients all prepared by someone who cares about food. This is not the typical baked potato, cheese toastie, clart-it-all-with-mayonnaise-and-hope-for-the-best eatery you find dotted on every High street. This has the same implied ethos - reasonably priced, good honest food - but with an added, passionate, local twist. It has heart. Added to which, the coffee was excellent (I am very fussy about my coffee, irritatingly so, I’m ashamed to admit). I even exchanged a couple of (rusty) words of Gaelic with the owner, something I haven’t done in over twenty years! If in Wigtown, please, please, please frequent. We should nourish and champion the few who are prepared to offer quality and imagination.

Second visit to the lovely Beltie Books; I had the St Augur blue cheesecake with pear and salad - a must-try if you visit to eat. Lovely bright and airy place to have lunch, followed by a browse through their great selection of books - local and Scottish, new and secondhand, great prices. Lovely, attentive, friendly staff. Can't recommend highly enough.
