Bay Leaf in Cardiff

We’ve been here on numerous occasions previously but on this particular occasion we were very disappointed. It was a Monday evening and very quiet. Only one other couple in the restaurant. We felt we were being rushed. We arrived at the restaurant at 7.50pm. We ordered wine and beer and poppadoms. Immediately they arrived and Within minutes after that the waiter came for our order. 20 minutes after we arrived at the restaurant they were clearing away our starters and bringing our main courses. Our starter’s were both very nice apart from the fact that when the waiter was serving my partners starter at the table, he tipped some of the food on the table and onto my partners lap. He apologised and carried on without attempting to wipe up the food he had tipped. We had to then ask twice ( 2 different waiters) for another napkin to wipe up the food. The older gentleman got us one very quickly after asking. The waiter came with our main courses. He didn’t know what dish to put in front of us as he didn’t know what they were. The other waiter came over and put the one dish in front of my partner. I asked what the other dish was as it didn’t look like what I ordered. He didn’t know. The older gentleman rushed to the front of the restaurant to look at our order and after checking our order he said it’s a chicken Bhuna. He said that the waiter was confused because they use the same sauce for a lot of dishes!!!?? It tasted like a masala sauce to me. I could taste coconut in the sauce which you don’t get in a Bhuna. Very disappointing main courses and the service was even more disappointing I’m sad to say.

Disappointing , with so many great reviews we were really looking forward to dining here . The starters onion bhaji and sheek kebab were both pretty tasteless , main course chicken tikka nahiyali tasted predominantly of black pepper I don’t know what happened to the garlic, mango and almonds ,also be aware if you think the chicken tikka will be traditional and red in colour you will be disappointed the chicken is white and no different to chicken and chips and not much of it ! The meal was served luke warm although warming plates were supplied , my wife had tandoori chicken which was ok but nothing special . My wife also had a peshwari Nan which she often refers to as her dessert being sweet and covered in coconut , this was not the case here the Nan was bland with very little coconut and wouldn’t have made a good plain Nan . Suffice to say we have eaten in much better Indian restaurants in Cardiff and won’t be rushing back to the Bayleaf !

As Indian cuisine fanatics - I believe we have ate in most Indian restaurants in Cardiff and much beyond - but nothing really compares to the Bay Leaf! The owner always greets us in such a polite and hospitable manner - and that really does make a difference - the food is nothing less than top notch and the overall ambiance is truly the best you could possibly want! The absolute BEST!!

Wow! 1st visit to this fab restaurant & not the last. All the staff friendly. Atmosphere so calming. Not rushed in any way. Best Indian food I've ever tasted from a restaurant. Prices very reasonable too. Definitely coming back.

Janga Puri for starters, King Prawn dhansak for main and all was delicious. On previous visit to Llandaff this place was fully booked and I can see why. I had 3 meals over the weekend in Cardiff and they all took the plate away before I'd finished chewing the final mouthfull, speedy but odd.

Dined here as a family of four November 25th the experience was horrendous, crammed in like sardines in a tin , the noise was so loud you couldn’t hear yourself speak , food was practically chucked at you with three waiters running to your table with food , The food starters were a big let down very greasy with a small bit of wilted lettuce as garnish , The main dishes was so tasteless and bland and the Nan breads the same the worst dining experience I’ve ever had I’d avoid at all costs !!!

Best curry in Cardiff I’ve visited more than 20 times and the good vibes and friendly nature of the staff add to the fact the quality of the food is brilliant. Time after time I visit or order a takeaway and I get the same result. 5* Fabulous family restaurant and the customers returning speak for themselves. I personally have the vegetarian curries each time and they are amazing too. Couldn’t recommend more. Mr Matt

Cater for Gluten Free. Food superb but could have been warmer

Ordered a takeaway Friday for 2 and had to collected as they don't deliver, not a problem. We were very disappointed in the quality of food. The dishes were bland and the sauces were watery and tasteless. We have used this popular restaurant many times to dine in but we will never used for a takeaway again.

We visited with friends on a busy Saturday Night. The restaurant was busy and full. If there is one thing I cannot stand is being rushed. We were continually asked by different staff whether we were ready to order (the first after we had just come in and had not even looked at the menus). We had our wine, and then our starters. The food is delicious, so no complaints about that. However, as soon as the starters were taken away, almost immediately the main courses were brought to the table. A gap of 15-20 minutes would have been welcomed, and would be normal. Again, no complaints about the quality of the food served, but the whole experience was rushed (which I hate). We had to wait a long time for the bill and an equally long time for the card machine to be brought to the table. It looked as if they only have one such machine (something which is surprising given the number of covers). Despite what I have said, we would definitely go back, but hope that the next experience will not feel as rushed.

Tried out alot of indian food but this by far the best indian. Food is always top in here with so much speciality. Service is always excellent here with staff always smiling and attentive.

Primera experiencia en un restaurante indio. Preguntando a los camareros supieron recomendarnos perfectamente según los gustos y quedamos muy bien atendidos. La comida muy rica y con buenas raciones. Nos decidimos por este porque es un barrio aparentemente más residencial, tiene buena apariencia y lleno de gente local.

We eat here twice per month as its 20 miles from where we live. Service is always with a smile, very friendly staff and the cuisine is one of the best, which is why we come here. Car parking at top of street opposite Spar.

Pete and I have indulged in our fair share of Indian dining over the years we’ve been together, and Bay Leaf was by far the best. Food quality, the quality of service, value for money, speed of service were all faultless. Menu is extremely varied and food seemed high quality. The food didn’t feel greasy or oily as we’ve experienced in previous restaurants. Would love to return asap.

Simply the best restaurant in Cardiff, quite possibly the best Indian restaurant I’ve ever been to. No faults. Fantastic service and incredible food, every time. I’ve been going for best part of 8 years, not a single bad meal!!!

Excellent crisps, samosas, biryanis, naan, etc. Great workers. Minor mishap in our order but they handled it professionally, no real complaint.

Best restaurant in Cardiff by far. Food and Service in this place is top. You can tell why this restaurant is so busy. Lots of variety of special currys and top atmosphere at the place even on Tuesday.

The food is excellent but for some reason, the staff insist on cleaning whilst you're still eating. This has now happened three times. The first time was lunchtime when they decided to clean the wall lights. Then, on two occasions (an hour before closing), they were sweeping and mopping the floor whilst still eating. There was also no choice to have deserts or coffee as the bill was presented without requesting it.

One of the best restaurants in Cardiff. I ordered the chicken shashlik and it really was the best I've ever had. And I've had a few! Good value too, around 25 per head with drinks. I cannot fault this superb restaurant.

Most people don't realise what they call ""Indian" restaurants, are in fact Bengali, About 95%. this is one of the best I have ever visited outside of West London ! A varied and interesting menu. My wife was actually tempted to change from her usual " Korma/ Butter Chicken to something different. The advice given by the friendly and knowledgeable waiter was "spot on. Good food, fairly priced, good service, Shall visit again when this area. Excellent.

Had a takeaway, which was cold to start. The Captain Palitha curry sauce was very watery and tasteless ( think they forgot to put any spices in it). Will not be using that place for a takeaway again. It did use to be one of the best Indians around, don’t know what’s happened to it now.

Had a takeaway Sunday £45 3 people, no delivery had to collect. Sauces watery and bland meat low quantity poor quality. Dined in and had takeaways there before as local to us and always been very good nice staff etc. Not sure what's happening new chefs cutbacks etc dont know but wont use again. Very disappointed.

I visited this restaurant last night for my first ever Indian restaurant experience and my birthday. The food was excellent with lots of options, we where given popadoms right away before even ordering and free chocolates included with the bill. Food clearly contains the highest quality of fresh ingredients which can be tasted in everything they The food is always fresh and hot, presentation is exceptional and they always plan ahead to keep the food hot. I have had many take aways and sit down meals here with my girlfriend Evans over the past few years. I am a huge lover of spicy food, so have been to many local restaurants in my time, and can honestly say that The Bayleaf is the best!It wins hands down for consistently delicious food, with tender meat and is reasonably priced.Because it is so good, they are often very busy, but they manage this well, attentive and eager to please. A fabulous establishment, their food is amazing.

We recently visited the Bay Leaf for an evening meal and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The staff were excellent and very professional and appeared experienced.We had Starters and Mains and all our food arrived piping hot. The King Prawn starter was very tasty and so was the Chicken in Spinach. The Prawn Madras and Chicken Johl (apologies for spelling) were also excellent. As was the fresh Naan. The Bay Leaf is a great place to go for a Quality meal.

We went here on a Monday night in November craving an Indian but wanting to try somewhere different for a change, and glad we did. Very pleased with the quick service with drinks and poppodoms being brought to the table very quickly. Staff friendly and attentive.We felt safe with each table being socially distanced and screens in place. For the price we paid it was very reasonable and good quality food. Would return and glad to have found a new Indian restaurant in Cardiff to go to.

I regularly get a takeaway from Bayleaf and occasionally have a sit in meal here, but due to lockdown we had a takeaway last Friday which I must say was outstanding. They have recently added a few new dishes to the menu and I must say the Hariyali Chicken is amazing, just the right amount of spice to give it a nice 'kick' without being too hot and it also has spinach which I love in indian food. We also had a chicken Tikka and Chicken Korma with Papadums, chutney and pickles. The standard of food here is exceptional and I would recommend it to anyone.

Enjoyed a lovely meal at The Bay Tree last night. The service and friendliness of staff was excellent as was the food. We thoroughly enjoyed all our meals. The lamb biryani was the best I’ve tasted!

El antojo de un curry en todas partes durante esta comida para ayudar estaba lleno, ya que no decidimos salir a comer hasta que por la tarde encontramos una mesa aquí para 5. 30 que nos convenía. Nuestra primera visita pero no nuestra primera opción. Sin embargo, la comida y el servicio fue excelente, todos estuvimos de acuerdo, nos sentamos arriba, que era luminoso y aireado abajo parecía oscuro y un poco estrecho. Volveremos de nuevo

Desafortunadamente, todos los platos que teníamos tenían el mismo sabor. El arroz de la tienda de intercambio de varios colores tenía poca luz. Se esperaba mucho mejor. Al menos no costó una fortuna.

After previously enjoying the takeaway curries from Bay Leaf throughout lockdown, we couldn’t wait to try it in the restaurant. It didn’t disappoint! One of the nicest curries I’ve had, really tasty and fresh with great portions. Would definitely return and would recommend to anyone

Waiters and kitchen staff were not wearing face masks, no distancing. Food was bland, worse then average. Rogon Josh had a Sunday dinner type flavour, no spice!

Primero comimos en el Bay Leaf en el 18 de nuestro sobrino y lo disfrutamos muchísimo. Con el bloqueo descubrí que tenían un servicio de comida para llevar. El estándar de la comida superó todas las expectativas y algo más. Excelente relación calidad-precio, excelente comida y excelente servicio.

Por segundo viernes consecutivo, aprovechamos el servicio de comida para llevar muy seguro de Bay Leaf. Se reserva por teléfono y se le da un tiempo para cobrar. En ambas ocasiones no tuvimos que esperar, y el personal fue tan amable como siempre. Excelente restaurante: comida estándar al precio habitual muy razonable. Aproveche este servicio de comida para llevar y apoye al Sr. Khan y a su encantador personal. No podemos esperar para volver a comer en el restaurante, pero, mientras tanto, esta es definitivamente una alternativa más que aceptable.

We’ve been coming to this restaurant for years. Last Friday we had a meal here with the knowledge of all restaurants to close that night, so we thought let’s get one in! I ordered a beer and the waiter put it on our table with so much force the beer frothed onto the table with no apology! Food was bland and the overall service was very poor and it wasn’t at all busy! Very disappointing! Needless to say we shall not be returning to this place ever again!
