Barkers Department Store Coffee Shop in Hambleton

Brilliant shop, lovely helpful staff. These two ladies were fantastic helping my wife. We went home with something even better than we went for. 💞

Love this store, enjoy the restaurant, drove 1 1/2 hours round trip, just to go to Barkers, Well done to all the team, here is to many more visits.

Super clean restaurant and great food.

Has a bistro; does breakfasts. Big breakfast is huge and delicious. Loads of tea too. A little more expensive than some, but worth it. Very large store. Easy access from main street. Handy parking even though Wednesday Market occupied much space. Lovely place to shop. WHSmith had both birding magazines; what's not to like?

Lovely shop, great cafe (love the prawn sandwiches). Great selection of good quality items, including clothes just like department stores used to be. The slightly out of town Barker's furniture store is worth a visit if you want a new sofa or other bits for the house, good cafe there too.

Lovely department store with great ranges and helpful staff. Unfortunately places like this are becoming increasingly rare

I can only praise all of the staff in Barkers , they are always so welcoming and pleasant as well as helpful if you require any information on a product , they go beyond what you would normally expect . We received our new furniture yesterday and even down to the delivery team the service is outstanding , Thank you to everyone . We Love shopping at both Barkers home And Barkers Northallerton and can’t wait till our next visit , highly recommend both of the cafes and restaurants too . Carole and Brian Straughan

The best shop in the area; outstanding.

Great place to spend an hour or two, Two restaurants, toilet facilities. Cookwear, Gifts for all occasions, menswear with Boss, Gant, Diesel, Barbour, Le Croc, Super dry, Levi's. Women's wear with Joseph Ribkoff, Ralph Lauren, Ted Baker, Hobbs, to mention a few, but many more brands or labels in store. Also have to mention the helpful and friendly Staff who help with your shopping experience. It's a traditional store with traditional values.Worthy of 5 Stars

Purchased mother of groom outfit, shoes , hat and bag from phase 8. Staff were excellent advising on accessories and bring different colours and sizes. Would highly recommend 👌

Self-service resteraunt good quality homemade food . steak pie ,lamb stew/ shank ,lasagne and newly introduced cumberland sausage delicious. all excellent value around £12.95 The Bistro also on the upper floor at the front, is table service; really good food at good value prices.our favourite is the steak sandwich. Fish and chips good

Decided to try the bistro for breakfast instead of going into the main restaurant.What a lovely experience,so relaxing,slightly more expensive but well worth it. Could not fault the breakfast or the staff .

Beautiful shop, although changed a lot since I lived/worked in Northallerton in the early1980s.

Excellent store with very helpful staff. As you walk through the store all the counter assistants speak to you with either good morning or good afternoon.

Had lunch here.. service poor. Drinks served after food had arrived and they didn't bring hot water which was requested. Staff miserable.. need more training.. 😫

One of the few department stores still left. Has a lovely restaurant and cafe and the service of all the staff is what you would expect of a high end store. Obviously not a cheap store as it sells designer wear and accessories, but the sales are often very good. Lovely department for cookware, glasses, crockery etc. too. I travel more than 25 miles to shop here.

Excellent range of products and friendly staff.

Visited Barkers Furniture store and decided to have some lunch at the upstairs restaurant. The whole experience was excellent. Food and service outstanding from Kevin and his team. We will definately be making it a 'destination' for food in the future. Highly reccomend the prawn salad.

Called at the 1882 Cafe upstairs for the first time and was really impressed. The setting and food were first class.

High end family department store split over 2 levels. Front ground floor comprising of cards and plush toys, beauty and perfumes, ladies jewellery, scarves etc. Middle ground comprising of ladies handbags, ladies and gents shoes trainers and boots. Rear ground floor comprising of menswear and kitchenware including some ornaments, scented candles etc. Upper floor comprises of ladies clothing, large cafe, bistro and children's clothing. This store has a huge range of items with amazing bargains to be found in the sales! There is also a separate homestore close by stocking beds, sofas, lighting, kitchenware and soft furnishings. It is a very special store. Update - The only negative is on a Friday the whole upper floor where the clothing is located has a strong aroma of fish and chips. Which is not only nausiating for those not fond of fish. But also puts you off spending 100's on high brand clothing which will no doubt have the food smells permeated into them.

Popped in to see if they had anything for a birthday gift, came away with a beautiful scarf, hat and gloves set from a designer brand. The lady who served us was very friendly and pointed us to a gift wrapped service where another young lady did an amazing job gift wrapping my present. Thank you.

More of an emporium than just a shop .Very good quality of products and excellent service

I went with my friend and was impressed the food. We both had a jacket potato, tuna, cheese, beetroot and salad. Very tasty, good size portions. We also had coffee and a Bakewell 🍰 slice. It was extremely busy but was worth the wait 😁

Not been for years 8 but must say its not the store it was ,had Xmas lunch with my wife and unfortunately it was only just warm I could have hit a bad day but wouldn't go back in a hurry I find it very sad ,I was wondering has this changed hands? P s some of the cutlery was not clean !

There are 3 areas in Barker's to indulge in eating and drinking. The main restaurant is usually very busy and suits those who want a self-service restaurant for meals and more. The Bistro is quieter and suitable for a nice brunch or lunch. The coffee shop accessed through ground level entrance is perfect for good coffees, beautiful cakes, and excellent service. Once you've selected your table with a reserved sign, you order and pay, and then it's delivered to you. Coffee is always great, as are the scones.

Nice cake and coffee but the staff are so noisy….. clattering plates and cups etc. we couldn’t have a conversation over the noise!!

Me and my wife visited this lovely cafe for a coffee and a toasted teacakes. The staff were very welcoming and kind, and the cafe was very clean. It was a lovely atmosphere so will be back next time we visit.

I went to the Barkers Kitchen restaurant on the first floor. It was very busy so difficult to find a table but it was lovely food and the staff were really friendly.

Well, I can't remember ever going into such a noisy cafe!! The staff seemed quite unphased by the noise they made storing cups and cutlery etc. I also disapprove of machine washed cutlery as it rarely returns to use in a clean and hygienic condition. I rejected 2 teaspoons and a fork!! This experience won't encourage me to visit again, I'm afraid. Sorry guys.

Excellent variety of ladies and gentleman's clothing. Staff are approachable and knowledgeable on products.

Years since I'd been in Barkers and how different it is to what I remember. Gone has the creaking flooring. A much brighter shop altogether.

Terrible customer service! Bought a branded bracelet from here as a present for my mum that wasn’t cheap! After 6 months, with only occasional wear the coating on the bracelet started to come away. Took it back to Barkers, as when purchasing, they said it came with a 12 month guarantee. The sales adviser then accused my mother of damaging the bracelet telling her it had a charm on when it didn’t! Then said they would send it back to the manufacturer, they in fact sent photos! Called back to say the manufacturer agreed with her, it wasn’t a manufacturing fault. Eventually after a further trip to Northallerton, they agreed an exchange for a lower priced item. Very disappointed in the customer service received and it would prevent me from purchasing other gifts from this department store. Poor effort Barkers!

Fabulous place as we were on a coach day trip. Once off the coach, the girls from the council made us extremely welcome with vouchers and a smile. The store was very impressive with a cafe where we had a lovely lunch, well done Barkers, would highly recommend

All clothes very expensive. Need to introduce some less expensive brands. Used to love visiting this store with friends but we now find other places to shop for clothes, mainly online

This place is becoming our ‘go to’ cafe/ coffee shop when we travel through Northallerton. Super friendly greeting by very helpful staff . The arrangements are great and easy to understand- grab a reserved notice and place it on your table. This means when you go to order you don’t loose your table! Great idea if you’re a singleton! Super food too - we usually have either paninis or toasties . Served with a lovely side salad and really good coleslaw . Large pot of quality tea ( plus extra hot water) . We would not go anywhere else in Northallerton and would highly recommend it to anyone. If you want waitress services just go upstairs!! No photographs I’m afraid as we had eaten our food before I remembered!!

Best place for scones and cakes in my opinion in Northallerton. I go here weekly and the scones and cakes never disappoint. Staff are friendly and upstairs cafe is spacious and pleasant to sit for a coffee and cake.

Its a shame that some of the staff serving coffee are so surly, the café has great food and the coffee (although often far too hot on the lattes) is good. Some of the serving staff however just look like they don't want to be there!

It's a shop not as good as it used to be

What a joy to visit, we popped in for a morning treat, and that's exactly what we got! From the cheerful greeting when we entered, this was a really vibrant, clean, happy environment. The menu had a good variety of breakfast/morning fayre, along with the luscious cakes and treats on display when you walk in the door. We had bacon and egg in white and tea. Along with a very smooth cappuccino with soya and cinnamon sprinkled on. They had an instant recognition when I said non-dairy so offered cinnamon on the cappuccino instead, along with Oat or Soya alternative milk. We were so impressed we came back before we went home but went to the first floor where they served hot food. We didn't try any on this occasion, however it looked mighty good and was reasonably priced. The staff all so helpful. On this occasion we had apple and sultana cake, San pellegrino lemon, diet coke and a very bold Java served in a cafetiere. Seating very clean and cafe very airy and inviting. We can't wait to return. We really enjoyed this visit! Thank you!

A well stocked and beautifully presented store with first-class service from sales staff

Went for food in the cafe upstairs, I had to wait about 30 mins after I ordered my vegan meal (the only vegan option available) as they had to defrost it first. For the money I would expect freshly made that day but it was nice. Please if your reading this Barkers more vegan options.

Men's department is spot on. Good mix of the right brands. Coffee shop is good too.
