Bardsley's in Brighton and Hove

Now, we like fish, and we like chips. And what a treat Bardsley's fish and chips were. Friendly, familiar service, generous large serve. We felt taken care of, like we couldn't possibly be in London. Maybe we should move to Brighton... Thanks team.

I really like it. These guy’s are soo good and lovely even the staff is so respectful. And I think I’m in love with a guy standing on counter so handsome lol heehehe 😄. Best fish and chips in Brighton really love the service.

Really enjoyed our fish and chips with a fresh good portion of fish and proper chips. We had two glasses of wine shared s starter and even so I thought it was reasonable pricing. It may not have a sea view like the Regency but it was worth the effort to walk up to it. Can recommend the food and did notice that a lot of the people who seemed to be regulars had a large portion of fish and chips and split it between them rather than two separate medium sized portions. Probably saved on the cost?

I am giving this chip shop a one-star rating because I was informed by an employee that a large bag of chips costs over £8, which is excessively high.

Sorry, I can only call it as I found it. Lunchtime takeaway Cod & Chips were a first-time purchase because of the recommendation in The Argus. My large cod was very tasty, beautifully cooked, in crispy batter, but shame that the fillet was thin and left me wanting. The chips should be an embarrassment to the management. At this time of year when potatoes are at their best before any frost has deteriorated them, they were of a really grotty quality. The messy small bits with inconsistent colour were not freshly cooked and not enjoyed. They verged on warmish. Value was disappointing, because the cost was about £5 more than it would have been in our usual chippy, for the two of us. Marks out of ten: Fish 8, chips 4, only because I love Fish & Chips. It was a case of going further and faring worse.

Well the chips had black bits and not sure they were fresh also the saveloy was hard and didn't eat half of it so i will not get a takeaway from there again

While not on the coast where a number are, Bardsleys just off the London Road is certainly a find. Well priced. I had Plaice and Chips and ate in. Food delicious.

First trip here, recommended from the Time-Out website. Atmosphere and Service were great, although there was some confusion over the menu, the cod was a lovely thick piece and the chips were fried beautifully. Zero complaints, would certainly visit again if in the area.

Went on Saturday night with a toddler and a baby. Staff couldn't have been any more accommodating. The food was incredible. I had haddock and chips with a side of curry sauce while the toddler had fish bites chips and beans. The haddock was probably one of the best I've had in a long time and sitting in made the whole experience quite nostalgic. Not from the area so unfortunately can't make this a regular spot, however I will be back any time I'm in the Brighton area. Highly recommended. Also thank you to the staff for dealing with the mess of the toddler (split drinks; chips on the floor etc.). Much appreciated!

Great tasty food with good size portions, good service and good price.

Slightly disappointing to be honest with this Brighton institution. £2 for half a lime and soda wasn't a great start. Mushy peas that were far to watery and chips that must have been cooked a good couple of hours previously. Fish was OK to be fair and the service was good.

Loved our visit to Bardsley’s. The staff were lovely, the food was delicious, classic and quality chip shop fair. Service was speedy too, despite the fact the restaurant was full! We’ll be coming back.

Fish cooked beautifully. You choose fried, grilled or poached. I had the special grilled and loved it. All five of us very happy. Some veggie options. Beer wine and spirits. Call ahead to be sure of a table, but walk-ins available.

Probably the best chippy in Brighton. -We were recommended by several independent sources to try Bardsley’s Fish n Chips on Baker Street. My wife had also looked up their reviews on Tripadvisor, we nine friends and family over this evening and we decided to give it a go. The fish was prepared freshly in front of me and Bev, the Chef and helpful young lad were all very friendly and helpful. Five+++++ stars.

My partner researched "best fish and chips in Brighton" and she found this gem of a place. We even walked a 6 mile round trip to go to Bardseys, and we weren't disappointed in the slightest. Tucked down a side street, the restaurant is very atmospheric, and we were greeted by a cheery lady, sorry we didn't get her name, but she made us feel very welcome. We had the medium fish and chips, and wow was it delish. Light, crisp and not greasy at all, the batter was lovely, the fish, white, Chunky and moist. The fries were divine, even the kerkin pickle was fab. We walked 6 miles to discover this lovely "chippie", and we'd walk double that distance to eat there again. Totally worth every footstep, highly recommend this gorgeous nugget of an eatery.

We ordered 2 cods, portion of chips and a mushy peas. The cods were really good, generous portion, well fried and not oily. Chips were ok and mushy peas very nice. Our server had to be reminded of our mushy peas order.

Go for the regular size, it is perfect for a lunch or dinner. The large is for the brave :-)

Didn’t want to get caught out by going straight to the sea front where you SHOULD get the best food and service but rarely do. Bardsleys is quite a walk from the water but worth the effort. Maybe its a sign of the times but the prices seemed to be high, but I cannot compare this as we didn’t even look at other places. We varied our choices between Haddock and Cod and went for the large portion, which didn’t seem to be much larger than the medium portion to be honest. Added to this we had peas and mushy peas. Well have to say we were all happy. Some of the best meaty moist white fish with great batter. Chips were also very good and the portions size was great. Our waitress was Bev, bit of banter bit of a chat made the experience even better. Thanks! So would happily recommend this place to anyone going to Brighton.

On arriving in Brighton at 6pm on a Friday night, obviously seaside fish and chips is a must and due to the weather being typically British on this particular day, we chose not to walk along the front 😅 so although this particular chippy is a couple of streets away from the front! It’s definitely worth the walk.. very sizeable and nicely decorated restaurant. You can also order takeaway if you prefer.. would really recommend this place 5 ⭐️

This is such a lovely place, a stone’s throw from the Levels. We came here on a Wednesday lunchtime with a toddler and were given such a lovely welcome. Loads of space to sit, prompt and friendly service, and the food came really quickly. Fish and Chips were absolutely delicious and portions were massive. Everything was wonderful and we will be back very soon!

Reasonably clean eat in or takeaway chippie. It does look very dated though. The service was very quick and seamless which was great. We found the food a bit overpriced for what it was £18 quid for a large Haddock & chips. An extra £2 for a portion of mushy peas so £20 quid overall which is full on restaurant prices but without the full on restaurant experience. My son had a cheeseburger and they charged an extra £2 for a slice of cheese 😳. They charge a lot for their soft drinks too, nearly £3 each. The food was well cooked and tasty so it wasn’t all bad just a tad overpriced for what it was. Saying that my wife loved her steak and kidney pie. She said it was one of the best she’s had in a very long while. If you want a sit down fish & chips meal I would recommend this place if you don’t mind overpaying for what you get.

Some friends and family were lucky enough to find this excellent restaurant with licenced bar. The food was cooked perfectly and the batter had that perfect crisp and colour. Their menu is very varied and refreshingly well priced. The restaurant itself is lovely inside and has very efficient and friendly staff. Lovely experience.

Popped into Bardsley’s after seeing some brilliant reviews online. Everything about the restaurant exceeded expectations! Bev was very pleasant to deal with, very attentive and friendly. Both myself and my partner could not fault the food or service so we’ll definitely be visiting again when next in town. Brilliant portion sizes, excellent quality food

Not a good chip shop! The staff need to learn how to cook chips correctly. What I received was a tiny box of greasy recooked and poor quality chips. Used to be the best in town but something happened to the standards. I believe that new owners are the reason why this once great chip shop is no longer.

Noticed straight away just how clean the frying oil was. Superb. Had haddock and chips and I was repleat. A lovely chunk of fish and decent chips. My only complaint would be the takeaway box, polystyrene not card.

This is hands down the best fish and chips in Brighton. The fish was meaty, flavoursome with a crisp batter - I chose the haddock and chips - and the hospitality was first class, friendly and knowledgeable. We learnt about where the fish is sourced, how the fish that reaches the plate is often seasonal and how much care and attention goes into the prep. An absolute must to visit in Brighton ❤️

Hands down the best fish and chips we've had in Brighton. This great place offers eat or takeaway options and not just your regulars but some different fish that you can try. All can be battered, grilled or poached and is all made fresh to order. I had the Cod and chips and it was great. Batter very light and crispy and chips were perfect. Husband and his sister had catch of the day which was seabass. One battered and one grilled (in the pictures). All can be washed down with a wide variety of drinks including local craft beers. Bev our server was amazing. Bubbly and friendly. Really made it a great experience. If your in Brighton and fancy some traditional fish and chips, look no further

I discovered Bardsleys a few years ago and wouldn't go anywhere else now for fish and chips! I thought it might go downhill when it was taken over a while ago but I'm pleased to say the quality is every bit as good under the new management. The food is consistently excellent, really fresh and perfectly cooked and the staff are lovely. They also have a good range of decent wines at very reasonable prices and we always enjoy a bottle with our meal. As well as traditional fish and chips they offer a selection of specials (the black cod is amazing!) and if you want a healthier option you can ask for your fish to be grilled and served with salad (I have to confess I've never had that, I can't resist the full fat version but friends have had it was very good). Haven't found fish and chips to beat Bardsleys anywhere!

We noticed that Black Cod was available and booked a table on a Tuesday evening. The place was almost full! The Cod was excellent as were the chips and a very reasonably priced bottle of Chablis. The service is great. A real must to visit.

Not wanting to leave the UK without having some famous fish & chips, I searched on Google for a local restaurant and stumbled upon Bardsley's. I'm so glad I did. There really is something unique about English fish and chips and Bardsley's delivers. There is a reason so many locals review this place! I had the cod with curry sauce. Furthermore, the chips were up there with the best I've had. Don't go elsewhere!

We've been eating fish and chips at Bardsley's for nearly 30 years. The quality of the food and the friendly atmosphere have always been excellent. This has been maintained when Bardsley's changed ownership. Not only are the fish and chips of top quality in freshness and preparation, but the friendly greetings and kind attention from the staff make this a special place. Regular customers are recognised, newcomers are welcome and the food is delicious. Thank you! Keep the tradition going!

Last Saturday evening we decided to treat ourselves to local fish and chips. It’s some time since we last did that and we decided to go to Bardsleys not having been there since it changed hands a while back. While the previous management were quite capable of serving up some reasonable fish and chips this new team have surpassed all their previous efforts, the fish was amazingly fresh and melted in the mouth and the chips also had a crisp fresh feel. I think that whatever oil they are using for frying does not have that slight industrial flavour the previous owners preferred. We’ll certainly be back soon for another treat.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Been a customer here for years, ordered double cod an chips as per. 2 small pieces of cod arrived, on salad (?) - no chips. Sent photo to Bardsleys asking for chips, told they would refund £3. I don’t want a refund, I want chips with my now cold cod. They then asked for my “kind consideration”... erm what?? I ordered cod and chips, I don’t know what’s difficult to understand about that.But obviously not sending me chips now. Fuming. Taking my custom elsewhere now. Farewell Bardsleys, it’s been a blast.

We've been there a few times when friends come to visit us from abroad. Portions are big, I always order the medium and struggle to finish it. Luckily a friend passed by and joined us and finished my chips with a beer.

Tiny portions, extortionate prices and not concentrating/unhelpful staff. As a Brighton resident I’ve been here twice before tonight through various circumstances and I had pretty much forgotten about the other awful times with minuscule portions and poor staff interactions or thought they were a fluke until I went in again.

Our next door neighbour studied in Brighton and recommended this restaurant. From what the waitress has told us, it’s under new management since a year. Located just of London Road, in Baker Street, we almost walked by the restaurant. Interieur is basic.

Ordered a large cod and chips. Well cooked and nice chips, but compared to back home in Southend the cod was a small portion in reality.
