Bar San Juan in Manchester

There was an unexpected heavy rain pour and the staff were attentive and focused on keeping us dry, as we were sat outside. We had loads of dishes - The food comes as when it’s ready, but all dishes are flavoursome and perfect portions. Ordered the wine which is delicious- so much, we bought a bottle to take home. Gorgeous food and can’t wait to return.

I absolutely love this place. The food is absolutely gorgeous and really authentic. I can’t get enough of the aioli! Everything is cooked so well and tastes delicious.

Been wanting to go here for ages and we finally managed it last night. Food was delicious, friendly staff, cool Spanish vibes & decor etc. Bread olives, beef cheeks, ham croquettes, lamb & fish dishes, tortilla all beautiful. Variety of Spanish beers also very good. Only slight criticism was that some of the dishes didn't come out with others but aside from that, food was brilliant and would love to go back and try some more. Highly recommended but you will need to book as not a huge venue and gets very busy.

I can’t speak highly enough of this absolute gem of a restaurant/bar. We have been visiting for several years and it is always absolutely perfect every single time. The food is unreal - lamb parcels and beef cheeks are particular highlights - and the sangria, beers and very generously poured measures of gin are quality too! The staff are always absolutely amazing and always go the extra mile. Pre-COVID, bookings weren’t taken and although the wait could be long for a table, waiting and having some drinks were actually a real highlight of the experience as the vibe and decor of the restaurant really makes you feel like you are on holiday in a local Spanish town. Having holidayed in different parts of Spain, the food here is so authentic and comfortably beats anywhere that I’ve ever eaten in Spain itself, and certainly any other tapas restaurant in this country. The only downside is that due to San Juan’s popularity and there now being a booking system in place, it is extremely difficult to ever get a table but that just makes it even more of a treat when we do manage to get a table! We would go every week if we could - thanks to all the staff there for the wonderful experiences you always give us!

Good food but not a great as the reviews suggest, still nice atmosphere and good service. I had the prawns and they were a bit bland in a watery sauce, I was surprised because I thought it would be full of flavour. Also had the potatos ali-Oli, again good food but a bit basic.

The tapas came out painfully slow. Sometimes upto 20mins between each dish (Tues early evening booking). The food was 'ok' but I wouldn't class it as the best tapas that we have had, especially for the bill/how much it cost. Would I go again? It wasn't terrible but it was enough of a painful experience to go elsewhere in future.

Visited on a Monday lunchtime and had to book a week in advance to guarantee an outdoor table. We have been many times and, as always, the food could not be faulted. Absolutely delicious! Staff were friendly as always. Can never go wrong with a visit here!

A big statement, but having lived in Spain for 2 years, I haven't had better. The bravas sauce is almost gravy like, unlike anything I've had before, and far better. The croquetas are to die for. Everything is cooked perfectly, and most importantly - massively tasty. Make sure you get a plate of padron, and definitely get a plate of jamon de salamanca - the 12 month cured ham - it's insane. On top of this, the staff are great. Very friendly, and even let us order a couple exta plates shortly after they'd stopped serving, because we had to have more ham and croquetas. To be quite honest, this was one of, if not the best dining experience I've ever had, nevermind tapas. The only downside is how quickly it's over, because you can't stop wolfing it down.

We visited on a Friday lunchtime and were lucky to get a cancellation table.It has a friendly, lively atmosphere. I love that the staff were singing along to the music and all seemed so relaxed and chatty with one another. It adds to the atmosphere. We had 6 plates between us which consisted of cod & prawn stuffed peppers, clams in a wine sauce, which were fab, the chorizo and fried quail eggs on toasted bread were a real suprise, they worked so well. We also ate an amazing octopus tentacle fried quickly with paprika on a bed of potatoes - superb! Next was beef cheeks cooked in the most amazing wine gravy sauce. The meat just fell apart. Wonderful! Finally we has the fillet steak cooked with onions, peppers served on sautè potatoes. This was pure comfort food.He had a couple of glasses of Manzanilla and I tried the Caballero brandy liquer which was spot on. And a generous measure.Bar San Juan was as good as we remembered it was. Don't hesitate. Book a table. Try something different, you wont be disapointed.

Amazing food and wine, fantastic service. Best food I've had in a long time. We had 12 different tapas in total, every single one was a delight. Loads of gluten free options for my daughter. Only slight downside was having to leave for the next customers (this was agreed on booking), we could easily have stayed a little longer. Would recommend 1000000%

My partner and I dined here on 15 June 2021. We had previously dined here in on 4 November 2020. The date we had chosen at the time coincided with Lockdown, but one of the wonderful members’ of staff rang me to ask if I wanted to change the date to the same time on an earlier day.As of the first time, the food (and drink) was remarkable - especially their sangria, to which I took a carafe home. Unfortunately, two of the tapas I wanted to order were off the menu on this day, so I had to settle for the same as I had the last time - this being the prawns and the steak. However, the Papas (Patatas) Bravas were, as usual, the best I have ever tasted.The desserts were also lovely, but the one thing that I was a little annoyed about was my double espresso. This was not a double espresso in the sense of the word as it was one shot of espresso, watered down. I asked the waitress if I could have a “proper double espresso that wasn’t watered down” to which she immediately replaced.The staff here are wonderful and very helpful - you just cannot fault any of them.I didn’t leave a review on here the first time we visited as we were going straight into Lockdown and I never anticipated that this would be for so long.

Went there on recommendation for our anniversary lunch.... Loved the place, the staff and the food was amazing.... authentic and tasty. Would highly recommend the beef cheeks and the chorizo with quail eggs.... The waiter recommended the organic red wine and it was wonderful!... Will definitely return and try the rest of the menu... The best tapas I've had outside of Spain without a doubt ❤️

We came out to celebrate my sisters birthday This is by far the best place I have been in a long time. It has absolutely everything you could want for a pleasant restaurant experience. The food was incredible the staff were friendly and helpful and the over all ambience of the place was amazing. It safe to say they have absolutely nailed keeping the feel and look of the restaurant intimate whilst still adapting to covid regulations with screens and outside dining. I have always heard good things about this place and can’t believe I haven’t been before until now. I will most definitely be back they only problem is it’s so hard to get a table in the place at the moment as it’s so popular. I had to keep pinching myself to check I wasn’t actually in Spain it’s that good. I recommend the lamb and octopus it was bang on for me but every dish that came to the table was immaculately presented and delicious. 10/10

We had a wonderful long lunch at Bar San Juan in Chorlton yesterday. A lot of my Spanish friends recommended this as the best tapas they’ve had in Manchester, and it definitely is!We had a lovely seat by the window where we could watch the world go by while enjoying our tapas. We had a few different things: from chorizo to croquetas and steak and padran peppers all washed down with some lovely Rioja Blanco.The staff were warm and friendly. This is definitely the most authentic tapas experience I’ve had in Manchester: no fuss, just good food! Just how tapas should be!We’ll be back.

We had such a lovely time at Bar San Juan this weekend that I had to leave a review. The staff were attentive & friendly and were accommodating when we hadn't finished our wine ahead of the next groups arrivals.Food is authentic and the usual tapas options. Some really great dishes (beef cheeks) and some so-so, but an overall great experience.Can't wait to return and sit indoors!

Picked up on time, no waiting 60 minutes for a table (definite plus) and the food was just as good as in the restaurant - miss the ambiance, but then we all have had to cope with that. It was great to support a local restaurant, hope we are able to sit at a table in summer.

We are regulars at Bar San Juan and have missed eating there whilst in lockdown. We were delighted when we heard Juan was opening for takeaway! When we placed our order we were a little worried that the food wouldn’t taste as good as eating in the restaurant! There was no need to worry! The food was absolutely delicious and to the same standard and quality as when you eat in the restaurant. I can definitely recommend! A real treat!

So happy they started takeaway!We’ve ordered here twice now, once via Deliveroo on the first night and last night for collection. It isn’t the full menu, but everything they serve is so delicious anyway, we really don’t mind. The food is just as amazing as anytime we have dined in the restaurant. Absolutely love it. It’s only a minutes walk from our house and I’m going to have to resist ordering 3 times a week! Thank you for opening up again for takeaway, we’ve missed your food so much.

Had read previous reviews and was impressed by what people had to say. Booking by Open table I knew this would be a different experience due to Covid. On arrival straight to table and seated next to bar and toilet route, quite busy. My criteria of a good restaurant experience is 3 things Ambience, service and food. The place had a great atmosphere( not sure it quite complied with tier 3 rules) the service was excellent throughout. Food choices, started with garlic bread... Burnt toast with garlic mayo. Patatas bravas .. Aunt Bessie's ...roasts. Mussels nicely done but the hot sauce... More like an over spiced soup. The beef parcels, pulled lamb and sirloin steak dishes were exquisite. So on balance weak start and strong finish. When this crazy world settles down will give it another go.

Our favourite restaurant in Chorlton. We’ve been here often over the years and always enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The staff always treat us like family and the food is never short of amazing. I can’t recommend enough! We visited last week before tier 3 came into place and felt safe throughout.

Me alegro de que podamos reservar en línea ahora porque nunca antes había podido entrar por la noche. Empacado un martes por la noche. La comida era deliciosa, el servicio excelente. Pedimos seis platos y era demasiado para terminar, así que teníamos algunos en caja jaja. Realmente recomendaría la tortilla española.Si voy a ser quisquilloso, pensé que la sangría era bastante débil y sabe a lo que se saca de una de esas máquinas de sangría en España que parecen máquinas fangosas, a diferencia de las cosas frescas.

Pequeño local que sirve algunas de las mejores y más auténticas tapas. El personal es muy amable y profesional, a pesar de la espera, nos hicieron sentir muy bienvenidos. Todas las medidas de COVID estaban en su lugar y quedamos muy impresionados, recomendaría encarecidamente probarlo.

Next it’s the lamb parcels. You smell them before you see them. A subtle, earthen tang, piquant yet utterly grounded in the moment. They emerge like geisha girls, a row of faux naifs, perched primly and seductively on their satin sheets of reduced Tempranillo. A single finger beckoning, daring you to let go. And let go you do. And then you are falling. Temporarily unshackled from reality, only to be embraced by the warm, beer-soaked arms of a buxom landlady, the ham croqueta, urging you to stay the night in her cosy inn. But you are not alone. For sharing the inn are some other weary travellers: the witty calamari, who regales you with tales of time past; the charismatic quail’s egg, cracking wise across a smear of chorizo; and the incorrigible, enigmatic Pan San Juan - bread like you have never had before. And finally, when your defences are down, in walks the One You’ve Been Waiting For. The beef cheek. She embarrasses you, throwing you onto the sheepskin rug to ravage you. I’ve been a regular San Juan diner for years and I never leave reviews however in these unprecedented times I feel like it’s more necessary than ever to support amazing local business’. The food is unreal, the best in Manchester in my opinion and not just referring to tapas and the staff are just the loveliest people even though they’re in a very high stress environment there’s nothing they won’t do for you. I just hope that now they have a booking system to accommodate social distancing more people will try this amazing place without the worry of the 2 hour wait for a table (which I have done many times and is always worth it) Well done to Juan and the team for staying consistent and keeping the no.1 Manchester restaurant in Chorlton

Wow this place is amazing! The food is absolutely delicious, some of the best tapas outside of Spain we’ve had. Fantastic chilled atmosphere and the staff are amazing, very attentive, helpful and welcoming. Already booked our next visit, can’t wait!

A three month hiatus, but little has changed. Bar San Juan is still the best in Manchester. The leek and asparagus was amazing, and the old classics patatas bravas and croquettes still make it on our bill every time.

The most authentic Spanish restaurant I have been to in England hands down! From the food, to the decor, to the staff everything was amazing. Would advise you to book in advance as it’s very very popular (for good reason), and quite a small restaurant. Thank you, we will be returning soon!

We frequently visit here whenever we are in Chorlton. This is the first time since lock down and they’ve expanded into the bar down the road. I’m so glad they’ve started to accept bookings and hope they keep that method. The food is superb as always as were the staff. We asked the waitress just to pick a random mix of dishes for us which worked perfectly.

We booked a table here for 5.45 sat eve. We ordered a bottle of house red, and 6 dishes. The service was superb as usual, this place has a great family feel to it and always feel welcome. The food is superb we ordered, patatas bravas with both sauces, padron peppers, lamb parcels, the sirlion steak dish, garlic prawns and boquerones(anchovies). All the dishes were amazing you have to try the lamb parcels they are incredible. To be fair it's all incredible. Excellent service great food and only £50 bill what's not to like. One of our favourite dining places in Chorlton. There's no false reviews with this place unlike others on Beech Road mentioning no names , this should be no1

By far the best tapas I've had in the UK and rivals parts of Spain. Authentic with a modern twist. The lamb parcels are one of the best dishes I've tasted. Will continue to visit and bring friends so long as I live in Manchester

Just drove 60+ mile round trip to eat your lovely tapas and you were shut !!! This was at 16:00 on Monday 13th July . You really need to update your opening times ... we are very disappointed x

Bar San Juan, we are so happy that you are back! Our favourite tapas bar has expanded into the next door but one pub- formally The Parlour- so it can fit more people in, all at a social distance of course. Staff very happy to be back, food and drink wonderful as ever, plus San Juan has brought back their fantastic Spanish omelette! Best place to eat and drink in South Manchester.

Well, what a fantastic Tapas bar! A friend had raved about this bar & i can see why! A truly authentic Tapas place. The menu isn't massive which I think is better than having pages & pages to choose from.The 2 dishes I highly recommend are the lamb parcels and beef cheeks, but all the dishes we had were fantastic. You can't pre-book so I do recommend getting there for when they open at 12pm. It is only as small place so gets busy quickly.I will definitely be returning to try the dishes I didn't this visit!The staff were lovely & very efficient.

This is our family's favourite tapas bar. A warm atmosphere and fantastic staff. When it is cold, grey and miserable in Manchester this place offers a delicious vibrant escape. It is a small bar, which helps maintain its authenticity and intimacy but this means it can get busy at weekends. I like to visit early evening mid week which means you don't have to wait and have more space. They have recently revamped their vegetarian and vegan menu.

We got there early for lunch time service. It really is tiny, but it creates a good atmosphere. The food was brilliant - patatas bravas and garlic mayo are to die for. My only complaint was that the king prawns were a bit too salty, but everything else was perfect.

Don’t know why I’ve never reviewed this place. It’s our favourite place to eat. Food offers enough choice for non meat eaters and carnivores alike. The atmosphere, drinks and service feels like a real piece of Spain. The atmosphere is both bustling, relaxing and exciting. If we could, we’d eat here weekly. It’s somewhere we come for birthdays, rainy days, summer days and when our life needs an injection of light! You can’t book so arrive early or don’t arrive hungry and enjoy the drinks while you wait.

Went there on Saturday night and it was as busy as ever! Great food though as always. The only downside when you’re waiting at the bar to be seated (which can be an hour at times) you can feel everyone brushing past you as bar area is tiny.

We arrived 5 minutes before they stopped serving and they still found space for us. Our waiter was lovely and the food was amazing, especially the goats cheese dish!

Tried their new menu items; the grilled leek and asparagus, the peppers stuffed with cod and the pork loin. WOW. amazing. They don’t seem to rest on their laurels and constantly change small numbers of items on the menu. Still the best tapas in Manchester.

it's always encouraging to hear spanish being spoken by customers in tapas bars outside spain. bar san juan was full on the night we were there, with spanish being spoken at about half the tables. and right enough the food was brilliant. the 10 dishes we had were very high quality, standout were the fish (we tried anchovies, prawns, calamari).we'll definitely be back.

Fabulous bar which we have visited many times. Never disappointed by food or atmosphere. Typically Spanish menu. Small bar with outside, ‘pavement seating’. Often waiting time for a table but well worth the wait.

Have wanted to try this place for ages and wasn’t disappointed! From such a tiny kitchen the chef prepares some great tasting tapas dishes full of flavour. The staff are good at not rushing you even though there aren’t many tables but it does get full quite quickly. Well worth a visit with a nice mix of menu to keep you wanting to try all the dishes.

This little bar is tucked away in the small streets of Chorlton and finding out about it was a great fortune. It is perennially and deservedly crowded, the food is exceptional and super varied. Perhaps based on the price, the quantity is a bit scarce but you know, tapas is like this. Small flaw, you cannot book and finding a place is really difficult since there are very few tables. I'll be back soon to see you!

We've been living in Chorlton for 3 years and have always been trying to eat here but it's always been packed when we walk past. With only a few days before we leave the City for good we decided a Monday night may be a quiet time to try and get a meal here.

Left 10 pounds in cash the rest was to be paid by card - they took the 10 pounds and charged me in full for the meal.

The food had been at a stupidly high standard for years and nothing has changed in our last visit. The wines are excellent and reasonably priced. You just can’t fault the place!

Dropped in here on the off chance. Stupendous food. Great Spanish wine and superb atmos. Will definitely be coming again.

We visited on a busy Saturday evening around 6:30pm after a recommendation from a work colleague. We were put on the waiting list for a table expecting to wait around 40 minutes so sat near part of the open kitchen at a couple of bar stools. We actually ended up eating in the same spot as we were happy with a small table and it felt like we were more part of the action! Food was amazing, the best tapas we have had in the Manchester area - particularly recommend the beef cheeks, chorizo and croquettes (chicken). Also had two delicious deserts and a nice bottle of verdejo. Service was excellent, food timings were great and we didn't feel rushed. We will definitely be returning in the new year. Thank you.

Wonderful food and sangria on tap. What more could you ask for. Can be difficult to get a table during peak times as only about 4 available but well worth the wait if you have time to waste and get a drink with friends!

if you want to feel as if you were in Spain don't doubt, this is your place. Really authentic Spanish tapas, amazing food, better care from the staff. It even feels sunny whenever we go there on a rainy day. The croquettes are superb, the lamb saquitos are just madness, the special tapa of the day is always worth to try... simply, everything is good. Thanks for making us feeling at home every time !

Marie arranged for a trip out to San Juan (Malaga in Manchester). with Steve and Shiela. We love this place. This is well worth a visit if you've never been. The staff are fabulous and the food better than we've had in certain restaurants in Spain itself.

I have been there a few times... last one was months ago, and the waiter remembered even where we were sitting. Amazing food, and amazing tapas. We had also two gin tonics after the dinner and everything was perfect. Good job guys!

After moving to Chorlton earlier this year we had been meaning to visit but we assumed it would be a nightmare getting a table thanks to the huge swarms of people inside and out having a great time. We finally gave it a go last night and had genuinely the best couple of hours in a restaurant any of us can remember.

Fantastic Estrella Galicia on draught - just called in early for a few drinks but had to try the tapas - had the beef cheeks - fantastic and the potatos bravas - good vibe in the restaurant felt like I had been transported to Spain.

Been meaning to go here after recommendations so decided to go for my birthday meal. Went at 6pm and was busy already. We opted to sit on the bar stools to instead of waiting for table. Food was delish and especially enjoyed the Fried quail egg on bread with ham dish that we ordered another one, the garlic prawns and the Lamb chops were soft and cooked to perfection. The beef steak deserves a mention too. Staff were very polite. Defo will go again

Came here and there was a wait, there’s no reservations, but it’s worth the wait. Food is fantastic, service is good, sangria is superb! Wonderful night in Chorlton. Celebrities frequently haunt this little local restaurant. Reasonable price, great tapas.

Beautiful food. Great drinks. Good service. Huge turnover of customers as it's a small restaurant. Would highly recommend

Average food. We went on Saturday, we didn’t wait more than 40 minutes. It was so loud and the staff was okay.

Always busy and always top quality food. Never have I had a bad experience here, only downside is that it can be so popular you can have a long wait for a table!

Found this place on Tripadvisor so thought I'd give it a try, great little Tapas Bar in Chorlton Green in Manchester, small searing area with few external tables, friendly welcome by the team, enjoyed a glass of San Miguel and Rioja with some amazing chicken and ham croquetas and gambas pil-pil, autentic Spain in a awet Manchester, great place, will be back and definately recommend :)

It’s a little awkward as you can’t book for a birthday and have to turn up and wait with children makes it not always a first choice. The food is always good! Especially Padron Peppers which I could eat for a week.. but certainly when I took a trip to the bathroom it’s need a refresh on the decor compared to other places around chorlton and the kitchen which I didn’t see until after I ate definitely needs a re vamp... it’s dark inside and whilst I understand the Spanish rustic vibe some soft lighting would be nice!

Simply put, knocks the socks of all tapas bars in Manchester and probably the Northwest. This isn’t a fine dine, It’s a get stuck in, eat and drink. Bar St Juan sets the bench mark on on how tapas should be enjoyed.

We've long been fans if Bar San Juan. This restaurant just gets better. The food is absolutely delcious, atmosphere is so authentic - just like a tapas bar on Las Ramblas!

The menu was excellent, with great wines and beers. Particular highlight was the Manchego cheese with quince jelly

We had a lovely lunch, food was amazing! And the staff are very friendly. Definitely will return to this cosy authentic restaurant :-) Xx

Went to visit my daughter on her birthday, as she lives in Chorlton she chose Bar San Juan for her birthday lunch. So pleased she did, it was fabulous.

This is a lovely, bustling place with authentic Spanish food and wine. Busy at most times, but worth the wait for a table.

Food is excellent - staff warm and welcoming - service wonderful - tapas is very tasty and filling - highly recommended 😀 real treat 😀

Myself and my partner had a fabulous time yesterday here at San Juan.We had the gambas , lamb cutlets,potatoes and bread all of which were beautifully cooked.Had two halves of their Cruzcampo which was nectar.The staff were all extremely friendly and efficient.Will be going again soon

We've been here twice quite recently, and love everything about it. The food is amazing (good choice for vegetarians too) and the staff and locals are friendly too. You may have to wait for a table, but it's 100% worth it. Get the spinach and chickpea dish, it was absolutely delicious. Can't wait to take all our friends and family here over the next few months.
