There was a lot excitement in our house when we discovered Balmakewan were doing an afternoon takeaway for mother's day. My son ordered it through Facebook and we collected it today. Their social distancing was fantastic, with staggered pick up times and collection at the door from helpful, friendly staff who kept their distance. The food was perfection, it always is when you visit and the takeaway was no exception. Everything was fresh and handmade, from soup that was bursting with flavour, to beautifully prepared, well filled sandwiches. The sausage rolls were delicious, with buttery, flaky pastry. As usual, everything was dainty and presented beautifully. The scones were super light, as were the fresh cream eclairs, which had creamy chocolate on top. The macarons melted in the mouth, with the nicest wee chewy bit in the middle. The chocolate brownies were rich and dense, an amazing chocolate hit.If I describe everything the way I would like to I'd be writing for hours. I just have to say the team at Balmakewan exceeded expectations (they always do) whilst I hope they keep doing afternoon tea as a takeaway now and again I'm so looking forward to them being able to open as normal. I'd highly recommend a visit to anyone debating it.

Absolutely knew that Balmakewan would have all necessary precautions in place and of course they did. So easy to follow the well marked routes in the building which mean you never meet anyone. Food and service was, as always, fantastic. The only issue we had was that we’ve clearly being having smaller portions at home since the lockdown and we couldn’t quite finish our portions. Anyone who’s been hesitant about going out again need have no fear of eating here.

I've had afternoon tea here a few times and the food and the service never disappoint, today was no different, everything was perfect. You have to book few days in advance, but if you look at my photos you can see why. Everything is made to perfection, little mini versions of all the best treats. There's always a warm welcome, I love the atmosphere in here, it's really relaxed and I always feel welcome to sit for as long as we want to. We started with mini cups of richly flavoured soup, and mini black pudding balls, delicious with a nice crispy coating. The savoury plate had a generous variety of sausage rolls, scotch eggs, tiny oatcakes with hot smoked salmon and open sandwiches. Everything was super fresh, perfectly made and presented and packed with flavour. The best part has to be their cake stand. Mini fruit scones, freshly baked with butter and jam, tiny empire biscuits, cream profiteroles with a rich chocolate topping, marshmallow and meringue toad stools, tiny banoffee tarts, I can't even list everything. Beautifully presented and perfectly made, what a treat. Everything is of course served with plenty of really good tea or coffee. It's a real treat to go here, its perfect for a special occasion, or as we did just for a nice relaxing catch up with a friend. The staff leave you in peace, but are always around when you need them. Five star doesn't seem high enough.

Had lunch in this lovely tearoom today but my thoughts are mixed. Wonderful friendly and attentive staff, hats off to them all. Lunch was ok. While the bread is rustic it was really a bit chewy and so thick that it made for a particularly dry sandwich with much more bread than filling. There was no way my elderly parents could enjoy it. While I wouldn’t order a sandwich again, the cakes were all very nice. We had four different options and each was very moist. There is a Farm Shop and gift area where I had expected to buy meats and deli items but there were only a few bits of cheese and some mini spring rolls which seemed a bit odd. Balmakewan is a treat whether you are going for coffee, lunch or to the farm shop. But last Saturday (7 July 2018) was the first night (I hope of many) when Balmakewan opened their doors for dinner - once a month - initially - to see how it goes. Well - it went brilliantly! We don't have enormous appetites but the menu was really tempting and offered a wide range of options - yet we had to stick to just one course - often I will have 2 starters but decided to have a main as Mama was having just a main - she had chicken & bacon melt and I had a ribeye ordered rare. I have not had such a perfect rare steak for 5 years - so quite difficult to achieve! And Mama's dish was equally spot on. All this came with new potatoes, mixed veg and skinny fries, and an astonishingly reasonable crisp fruity Sauvignon Blanc...........and bread and butter from ordering. Absolutely thrilled to have such a special place so close. This area benefits enormously from Balmakewan so forget the McDonald's at Forfar and turn off the road 15 minutes' north to enjoy this wonderful place!

When you first enter the shop, it's very striking, however I felt it was lacking in fresh produce for a farm shop. The menu looked nice and had good choices, however I was not too thrilled with my ploughmans lunch, mainly because it only had one slice of crusty bread, and I would have preferred better pickle and some onions. The cheese toasties were not very appetising either, huge thick slices of brown bread and cheese.

Thin pastry and full of meat.

Good to read all the great reviews. Been going here for years and it is one of the nicest places for lunch or coffee/ cakes.

First time at this farm shop . One of the best breakfast we had for years, maybe the best. The meats are very tasty , the poached egg perfectly cooked. And the service was brilliant.

Went here after hearing good things about it and I was not disappointed. There is a shop with a variety of goods but we were there for the food. We were approached almost as soon as we went went in but were waiting for others and were not hurried. It looks as if there’s only one big table but there are a few other rooms off the main room where there is seating at smaller tables. The scones are amongst the best I’ve tasted and the portion of Eggs Benedict was enough for a hungry appetite.

We travel frequently down the A90 and have passed the slip road which takes you to this hidden gem. We certainly won’t pass again without a visit! It was lunch time and the BLT I had was so tasty and a substantial portion too! Hubby had one of the ‘platters’ which arrived displayed on a slate with a superb selection of meat, tasty morsels of little pies, little sausage roll, cheeses, oatcakes etc etc all of which were succulent and appreciated. We left promising to come back and little did we expect but had to travel South the next day so decided to try out the breakfasts on offer. Disappointed we were not and as it was a lovely sunny morning we sat outside in the courtyard listening to the birds and relaxing. Reluctant to post this and share our treasure of a find. Oh and I forgot to mention the deli farm shop so many tempting treats to take home .. remember your cool bag!

Stopped here for lunch , it was quite busy and the staff apologised for the service being a little bit slower than normal but we did not find the wait particularly long. The food was excellent and a good varied menu. The farm shop has some very nice looking produce and some nice gift ware. Very good if you are looking for a slightly different but good quality gift.

My husband & I stayed at the Coachmans Cottage for several weeks which is attached to the farm shop, it was a wonderful stay & the cottage outside is traditional but the inside is modern. We loved the big fireplace & roll top bath! Had lunch in the farm shop which was delicious, can’t fault anything & would highly recommend if you would like a nice countryside stay.

Very difficult to find, poor, in fact no signage until you come to the entrance. Nice entrance, friendly staff, lunch good but not got ‘ah’ factor. Had a walk down to river farm yard on route pretty untidy.

I’d heard about this coffee shop from a couple of friends and we finally visited today. Absolute gem of a place. Lovely coffee and cakes, great delicatessen’s attached and a gift shop to boot! We only stopped by for a coffee, but next time it will be for lunch. Highly recommend.

We booked our table as I was advised it can be really busy. Lovely setting, with walks etc.plenty parking space. The meal was very good, excellent service, friendly staff. Very nice coffee also and plenty home made cakes to choose from, not the cheapest but worth it. Nice choice produce in the shop along with tea towels etc. We had a nice walk in the grounds after our meal. All in all a really nice afternoon. We will definitely be back with all the family next time. Lovely place, highly recommend it for a relaxing coffee or lunch.

I ate here while staying at the hotel, though it is open to the public, and I'm very glad I did. Grant clearly takes huge pride in preparing great food with ingredients from local suppliers. The steaks were particularly good (and cooked exactly to order), but also worth a mention is the new pizza menu. The meat feast tasted as if each meat had been hand picked from a butcher. There is a new menu since the last time I was here a couple of years ago and the range is very good, including all the usual dietary options. The restaurant has great views too, so although it's not the easiest place to find I would definitely recommend than you give it a try if you're in town.
