I see some unfavourable reviews of the farm shop here - I haven't visited it, so am only commenting in the cafe, which is run by different people. We love this little place. Off the beaten track, but well worth the effort. The girls who run it are trying to do something a little bit special and different and, for the most part, they succeed. If you're tired of the usual endless fries and chips – or trying to eat a little more healthily after Christmas, this is one of very few places that will help. On this visit, I had the pumpkin, ginger & coconut soup, served with sourdough bread; my companion had a walnut and mushroom roll. Vegan food (the café isn't exclusively vegan/vegetarian, but tends in that direction) can be difficult, and often ends up tasting like wet cardboard. Or even dry cardboard, sometimes. We have sampled several veggie options here, and not been disappointed – the walnut and mushroom roll had nice flavour and consistency. Soup was lovely. Good coffee and service too :-)

My wife and I had two wonderful nights in this little hidden gem. The host was very informative and gave us a few ideas on where to visit. The breakfast was wonderful, delicious homemade muffins and cheese and bacon pastries. The shop next door was our final stop to get enough to keep us going for a few days. The wheaten was tasty and the bacon amazing. Clean rooms with great showers. Wonderful selection of reading materials in the sitting room downstairs.

The food is quite nice , pleasant surroundings. Good whole foods shop. Friendly staff. However we won’t be visiting again. My daughter asked for sausages but they refused us because it was slightly past the designated time for breakfast. Apparently there wasn’t enough room in the kitchen to cook two sausages. There was nothing on the lunch menu she liked so we left. If you are travelling specially to eat there as we did, so be aware of no flexibility.

Had lunch today with my friend and her daughter at Ballylagan Organic Farm Tea Room. The meal was excellent - I opted for the bulgar wheat asparagus and bacon garden salad and had feta added as an ‘extra’ with sourdough bread on the side. Had coffee and a bake well slice (with a complementary coffee macaron on the side) to finish off. This was my first visit to the tea room but it won’t be my last. The care taken, the quality of fresh ingredients and the attentive service was excellent and I’m happy to recommend a visit to anyone. Prices are very reasonable too! It is definitely worth the trip out!

My wife and I called here for morning coffee having had lunch here on a previous occasion. The helpful waitress tempted us with the description of their scones so much that we decided to share a lemon curd and blackcurrant scone - not a usual combination. The coffee was excellent, but the scone was amazing. It was packed with blackcurrant and oozing with plenty of lemon curd which was a delicious combination. Absolutely yummy!!!! The scone was served with jam and butter, but both were not needed. The tea room offers breakfast and luch as well as coffee, tea and yummy goodies. Their food is locally sourced and is organic and there is a small shop which sells a wide range of locally sourced, artisan foods as well as other culinary essentials. This is not cheap, but worth the extra expense for the quality.

After hearing rave reviews about Ballylagan Tea Room from my daughter who had been there not just once twice but twice last week, I decided to pay a visit this morning for breakfast with my sister. The setting was beautiful. The portions were smallish but we both agreed that the food was delicious. As we ate, we planned to return to try the lunch menu. Unfortunately, our first and probably only visit was then spoiled by their handling of a little incident involving a moth and my coffee. Less than a minute after the waitress delivered my cappuccino, a small moth flew overhead and straight into my coffee. I had not even had an opportunity to take a sip! After waiting a while to see if the waitress would return, I decided to go to the kitchen door and there I explained what had happened. I asked if the coffee could be replaced and we laughed off the incident. At least, that is, until our bill arrived... My sister and I could not understand why the bill showed three drinks when we'd only had two so asked the waitress for an explanation. We were told that the third drink was for my replacement coffee and that she'd only charged me half price for it. When I expressed my disbelief at being charged for the replacement drink, I was told that the moth was not their fault and they would otherwise be out the cost of the organic milk. I was then told, not once but twice, that if this was an issue, she would deduct the extra charge from the bill. We left feeling embarrassed and disappointed. That is most certainly not the way to attract repeat visits.

I have had both lunch and morning coffee here. Food and setting are excellent. The scones are delicious - the only change I would make would be the cream. My preference is clotted or a good thick double cream, this is of course personal taste. The tea room itself is lovely. I love the wood burner it’s very cosy in the winter. The menu is not extensive but this is a good thing. Too many places have an extensive menu and mediocre food. Staff are pleasant but not overbearing.

In the nice scenic county Antrim countryside is an organic restaurant and food market called Ballylagan Organic Farm located in Straid village between Larne and Ballyclare. The food is all organic with a lot of the produce being produced on the farm grounds and they also cater for vegetarians and have gluten free options. I got the Gammon and cheese toastie recently and soup and I have to say it was so rich in flavour from the cheddar cheese overpowering the near of the gammon. There is also a rich bounty of sweet cakes, bins and tray bakes on offer for all the sweet toothed foodies out there and there is even a small organic shop where you can pick up some ingredients for your next meal. Very nicely located within the walled gardens of the farm house and the only thing I can fault them on is the price but what do you expect for rich organic and eco friendly food.

I visited here with a friend (as I have done on numerous occasions with different friends). To be honest we have started to get used to the attitude of a small number of servers but I was disappointed yesterday. Firstly we felt very unwelcomed by one of the servers who seemed to take pleasure in being generally difficult. While my friend was eating her sandwich she removed a large tomato only to find a worm crawling around the tomato. I called a young waitress over who was very apologetic and offered an alternative (to which my friend refused) and a free drink. Although the young girl dealt with it well I felt like the more senior members of staff or even the owner should have come to apologize. When I paid the bill (minus the sandwich) to the original server she didn’t even mention the issue we had or apologize then. It has really put me off and I have to say I won’t be back and I’m happy to tell others about my experience. It’s one thing to have rude and abrupt servers but for senior staff to ignore this incident is disappointing.

I took my aunt out for lunch to Ballylagan on advice from a friend who told me it was her favourite place for afternoon tea. Maybe it is good for afternoon tea but , in my opinion, not for lunch. The menu is small & I understand why, however on the day we visited the soup being offered was not to our taste ( courgette & almond), nor was the macaroni & cheese special, so we ordered a toasted sandwich. It was served on a small side plate with no garnish, just a toastie sliced in half . I expected a small green salad or some crisps to at least make the food look more attractive ......I make more effort at home even just for myself. I understand from the web site, the ham was from their own pigs but the amount given was small , more cheese than ham. I expected more ,given prices are higher due to the organic nature of the cafe. I asked for a top up of hot water for my tea as it was served before our sandwich & had cooled down. A small jug was brought , but it was not done graciously . In fact I would go as far as to say I thought the staff were unfriendly & seemed to be happiest in the kitchen chatting ( I could see them ) We visited the shop & agree prices are high. I bought a wheaten loaf & it was nice. Can't imagine I'll be back nor will my aunt who thought it might be a new spot for her lady friends.

We came here for lunch at around 1pm, and as a fairly regular customer I was delighted to see there was a new special available! Trio of Sliders - Beef, Lamb and Pork with sauces. Having tried a lot of the menu (all of which is outstanding), I decided to try this special. It came out presented on a lovely slate, with the sauces just infront of each burger. The pork came with an apple sauce, lamb came with mint, and the beef came with tomato chutney. The taste was phenomenal, they were cooked to perfection and the sauces complimented them perfectly! I would 100% order these again if they were a regular on the menu. I enjoyed them so much I even asked how often they were going to be on the menu, and found out they were going to be sold in the farm shop as bigger burgers, so I could even have them at home! I would definitely recommend these sliders, even if you buy them from the shop and make them at home, they were excellent!

Both meals arrived hot to the table nicely presented. They tasted fine. The room was cold and so we didn't feel comfortable enough to hang around. The shock came when we paid our bill. £16:05 for two portions of French toast a latte and a cola!!!! I know one pays a premium for Organic food but seriously? I will not be returning again and would not recommend this place to anyone. Its a real treat to take a spin out to Ballylagan Organic Farm at Straid on a Saturday morning with the Guardian tucked under my arm. Two free-range poached eggs (wonderful orange yolks, not like the anaemic yellow one usually gets in restaurants) on home-made wheaten bread and a side of organic Glenarm smoked salmon, washed down with a proper americano coffee with warm milk. Just wonderful in every way and a change to actually be able to TASTE the food!

Ballylagan has long been my favourite tea room in the Ballyclare area and this morning didn't disappoint. The cosy log fire was matched by the warmth of the reception from the staff. Service was really prompt and staff were anxious to please. My friend and I had delicious and beautifully presented freshly baked blueberry and white chocolate scones with coffee. The atmosphere was relaxed and although the tea room was busy, there was no pressure to move on, so we were able to chat for among as we wanted. The picturesque setting, organic produce and home baking confirm Ballylagan as the best tea room in this area. I can't wait to return!

Visited here on a Friday morning at 11am. Very busy. I ordered coffee and a scone. The scone was dry and powdery and obviously was not fresh. The coffee was luke warm. Very disappointed.

Visited on Friday past with my mum, dad & husband. We had a tasty lunch of soup, which was potato & leek, and sandwiches where nice. The setting is quite pretty but it doesn't mask the lack of atmosphere in the establishment. Let no one mention "the trouble with the youth of today" as the trouble with Ballylagan is the more mature staff. They seem to have no gratitude towards their paying customers. However, the younger staff had manners, efficiency & overall a more pleasant presence. It was my first visit, after seeing an advertisement in the Tatler, I doubt I would return unless passing & starved.

As well as being the worst day of the winter so far (the day of the weather bomb) my husband and I had been advised several weeks ago that our area would be without electricity for the day. Our only option was to get out - accompanied by rain, storm, snow, sleet! We had been given a voucher to spend at Ballylagan so went for our first visit where we treated ourselves to lunch. The atmosphere of the cosy with the roaring fire was so welcoming. The food was superb and the waitress delightful. We will certainly return - a.s.a.p. Highly recommended!

This was the third time I had visited Ballylagan for morning coffee but I don't think I will be back. The scones are home made and delicious but I think the coffee is very much overpriced - you only get a tea cup for a cappuccino which costs £2.60 or flat white coffee white it costs £2.35. A small latte costs £2.60.

I have been to the tearoom many times for a quick snack anytime I have been up to visit the organic farm shop and I have loved every visit! I have found the welcome to always be warm - including from the friendly farm dog who greets you in the yard, I think her name is Gem? I usually opt for a quick snack, so a scone and a black Americano, however be warned that the scones are so delicious they are usually sold out before lunch time, so get down early to avoid disappointment! If the scones are gone, I go for a brownie if there are any as they are also amazing! I have only been for lunch once, I think it was cauliflower cheese soup, again it was delicious and the wheaten bread was great (I would say the best I have tasted from a cafe - I can't say best I have EVER tasted as my late Granny's wheaten bread still holds that title!!)That black Americano I mentioned however was perfect. It can be hard to get a GOOD cup of coffee as it can be burnt, or the beans are stale, etc but these beans seemed to have just be ground just for me, or at least that same day, and they weren't burnt at all. The coffee was so perfect in fact I asked the waitress what is was - Organic Fairtrade Columbian Coffee from the Farmers of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta - and I was delighted when she told me I could purchase a bag of the same beans in the organic farm shop, which I did, and continue to do so each visit!I always find the waiting staff to be very helpful and friendly and the food is always great. To those complaining that food is sold out when they arrive - please realise it is a small family run, organic farm tearoom. All food is prepared fresh that day and the majority of it comes straight from the farm very early that morning! If something sells out it means it is so fresh they can't just go out and grow more immediately and it is a testament to how popular this wee tearoom is!If you are not familiar with the area, Straid village can be very difficult to find at the minute due to the mammoth road works (and landscape restructuring!) of the Larne Line. But once you have found your way there you will not be disappointed!!

I have eaten in the tea room many times and can honestly say that I've never had any complaints about the food, it is always of a very high standard and well presented and the staff are knowledgeable and polite. I love the soup and sandwich lunchtime combo and the latest soup I tried (cauliflower cheese) with a cheddar and chutney sandwich was simply delicious! The desserts are to die for, the Bakewell tart is the best I've ever tasted and my latest treat of ginger and pumpkin cake was beautiful - moist yet light with juicy ginger pieces. The tearoom is cosy and relaxed, especially in winter when the fire is lit, I could sit there all day! I've never had to wait very long for my order and on occasion when space is limited in the tearoom I've went and had a browse in the very well stocked farm shop and came back when a table was free. For those complaining about waiting times please remember that everything is homemade and the kitchen staff are only human! Once myself and my partner ordered the homemade stew but as there wasn't enough left for two full bowls we were asked if we would like a big bowl between us rather than one of us miss out - I thought it was a lovely touch and we were more than happy to share what turned out to be a massive bowl of stew and we were only charged for one! One of the highlights has definitely been the Christmas Afternoon Tea which I tried for the first time last year. I have to say it was the best afternoon tea I've ever had and I've tried A LOT! The selection of homemade treats was fantastic and was great value for money. Mini quiches, finger sandwiches, scones and mini festive treats were abundant and delicious and coupled with the non alcoholic mulled punch and the harpist playing carols it was just the thing to get me in the festive mood...I can't wait for this years!

Went to the tea rooms this morning for breakfast with friends, the tea room was very busy when we arrived however we got a seat and placed our order at this point the waitress informed us that there would be a 15-20 min wait as a large party was in front of us, we did not have a problem with this as we were in no hurry. The breakfast when it arrived was superb we had a mix of breakfast baps and a variation of their fry as I don't like bacon. When it came to paying the bill the waitress said that our beverages would be complimentary as we had to wait on our breakfast, we did not expect this as we were very happy to wait, but all in all it was a very nice gesture. Will definitely be back......

I visited ballylagan for lunch today. I have been before, the service has been appalling but the quality of food saved it. Today however I ordered a pulled pork Belfast bap. When it arrived I opened it to add sauce. I commented to my husband that there was almost no pork at all there just lettuce salad. I am not a big eater - however what I eat I like to deliver in terms of flavour. I split the bap so I had only one half of bread even still I could not taste pork at all- that is how little there was. Then came the bill- the waitress described it as a small sandwich however it cost more than a standard sandwich@ £6.95. It was also not a Belfast bap. I spoke to a staff member about this- in fairness she offered me a refund. I didn't accept- it was a perfectly acceptable salad bap, albeit an extortionately expensive one. It was not a pulled pork filled Belfast bap. Without food- another one of the five listed fillings was not available at 1.O0PM? Lunchtime? I shall not be back, what would be the point.

I visited this tea room early last year with my son and husband. I ordered a toasted sandwich with their local ham and chutney. My hubby and son ordered soup / scones etc. After I ordered the waiter came over and told me their was a lovely shepherds pie and would I like that?! I said no I was happy with my choice. Our order came and my toastie consisted of lots of fat-no ham. It was disgusting!! I left all the fat on the plate. At no point did the waiter ask was there a problem - he was probably embarrassed! We paid the full bill and will not return.

While planning an extensive trip around Antrim and Northern Ireland in September 2013, my partner and I researched some possibilities for B&B lodging in the area. Our instant favorite became Ballylagan Organic Farm and Tea Room; unfortunately the week in September that we would be there wasn't available, as the owners were going on holiday. We secured another lodging, but our interest remained strong in visiting Ballylagan and eating at the Tea Room. One day while in the area, we dropped by for a late lunch. The setting was a perfect one for the two types of businesses with an organic market alongside. The quiet, rural location, authentically Irish in its natural surroundings was very appealing. Upon entering the Tea Room, we were seated promptly and given menus. Service was attentive and cordial, and we ordered latte drinks while deciding on the menu items. The drinks were great! We found a few healthy options for a light lunch and ordered a couple of the huge, fresh scones as a treat. They were amazing. While seated, we struck up a pleasant conversation with some locals and enjoyed talking of mutual interest. Between the food and the company, it was a very pleasant time. We enjoyed the flowers and plants in the adjacent courtyard. While it was a minor inconvenience in having the toilets in a separate, detached building, the facilities were clean, impeccable and attractively decorated; it wasn't that great of a bother. Outside, we visited with the resident dog, a sweet girl, and bought some fresh apples in the produce shop. Even the pigs were happy at Ballylagan--free roaming and romping in a nearby field. We gave them as much attention as we had Penny. The whole package at the B&B, farm, and Tea Room was quaintly attractive, and we were pleased we had carried through with our plans to visit Ballylagan. If we make a return trip to Antrim, I hope we can stay at the B&B, too. Thank you for a pleasant afternoon, Ballylagan!

My friend and I went for coffee and a chat. We decided to stay and have a light lunch. We both had lentil soup which was tasty but not a lot, tiny bowls. We had a filled roll each of ham, lettuce and tomato and 2 more regular coffees, 4 in all. Presentation was poor and for just under £25 I expected more

I had a great Tuscan bean soup with wheaten bread and a cappuccino here recently, see photographs, with a friend. The tearoom area was light and airy with local art displayed. We were served promptly and the waitress was very pleasant. The courtyard had some lovely wild flowers and a relaxing dog! There is an organic shop beside the tearoom where you can also obtain a key to go on their local walking trail. I enjoyed that walk a few months before. I hope to return soon with my two daughters.

I chose their toasted sandwich, and picked for my two fillings the gammon (from outdoor reared rare breed pigs) plus feta cheese + olives. This comes with side salad and home made coleslaw.it was very good. Very tasty. they had a selection of desperately tempting desserts on show, but I was trying to be good yesterday. Service was prompt and friendly, plus patient as I chatted instead of studying the menu. Then I was spoiled for choice. The outside is an idyllic ye-olde-Ireland type set of farmhouses with beautiful flower gardens and even a dog asleep in the courtyard. You could sit and paint it, and people would not believe it was still here. Happy Tamworth pigs across the road, fresh vegetables on sale looking glorious. Fantastic place. Do visit.

Have visited this place a few times. The setting is lovely and the food very good however I have found the attitude of the staff a little underwhelming! On a recent visit with some friends the attitude of the two ladies who were serving was unfriendly and gave the impression that they couldn't really be bothered. Such a shame as staff interaction with customers is nearly as important as the quality of the food served.

The coffee shop at Bally Lagan Organic Farm is over priced....Our walking group went for coffee and scones and we were charged each a service charge which was 10% each for a small cup of black coffee and a small scone which amounted to £4.95. When I asked about the service charge I was told it was because there were more than 6 of us. So beware if 6 people go for coffee make sure you sit at different tables....or better still save your money and go into Ballyclare and get better value for your money..

Came in and checked if it was table service...told to take a seat and even after the table was cleared we were ignored. half an hour after our arrival, after the second time going to say we hadn't ordered, our order was taken...being told that they had just got swamped but only one table came in after us and got served before us just made the experience more irritating. Then when our order came there was a flat white missing...and the other flat white wasn't even a flat white! The only good thing about the place was the raspberry and white chocolate scone. But otherwise, extremely disappointing visit!

Had read about this tea room and really looked forward to visiting it. The location looked promising but the actual tea room was very ordinary. The scones were delicious and came with jam and softened butter- good idea. Unfortunately there was a tiny amount of both and when we asked for more it was provided but without any grace. Really this reflects what I found most disappointing about this place. It wasn't busy when we were there but the service was very slow and the waitress never once smiled at anyone. We felt like we were a bit of a bother really!Customers had to hang about the till until someone came out of the kitchen when it came to paying the bill. There were no obvious signs indoors to indicate that the toilets were outside, across a small grassed area. We had to hover around the kitchen door until someone noticed us before we could ask where they were. It is a long way to go for something fairly ordinary with poor service.

By chance saw a recommendation on this Tearoom in the Belfast Telegraph Weekend Guide just as we were about to head out for the day. So stopped off and had a delicious home made scone & coffee at this well run Organic Farm Tearoom. The kids also devoured their brownies & ice cream. Can't wait to next sample the lunch menu which is all locally produced. It is very easy to find this quirky site beside Straid Village and it also has a 1km walk beside the Farm that looks interesting. Great to see a thriving rural business on our doorstep and always a good comforting sign when there is a constant stream of customers being efficiently served - keep up this good service !
