Bien hecho A. Wong

We came to A Wong to celebrate my birthday after reading the great reviews. The food was great but the service was a bit tardy. We had to wait close to 60 minutes for one of the dumplings. The restaurant staff apologised and gave us a free dumpling as a gesture of goodwill. The mushroom dumpling is to die for. Also def order ‘boat to yuanan ’ dessert- scrumptious... I will def recommend it to dim sum lovers and hope they improve their service..

I have been here a couple of times, it’s always very busy so you need to book well in advance but the food is superb, just as good as the more famous Chinese restaurants in London but not as expensive (although it’s still not exactly cheap) Well worth going if you want to treat yourself (or a friend, relation or lived one) to a special meal.

My wife had booked the restaurant 3 months ago so we were looking forward to it . If your travelling like us quite far there’s a Premier Inn 5 minutes round the corner . We arrived at 8 o’clock with a warm welcome and seated . We ordered the Taster Menu £108 pp and had been told it would span 3-3 1/2 hrs . Please don’t be put off as the dishes are from all regions of China . Please don’t forget you are eating at a Michelin Star restaurant in London The food is fantastic and the skill they have to put intricate dishes together is amazing. I must mention the staff as they are attentive but not intrusive and deserve a mention but what was great is the chef Andrew took the time to serve us one dish and asked about our experience. Totally worth the money and will revisit for lunch for a different experience. A Wong pat yourselves on the back 10/10 FANTASTIC

My mother had booked this restaurant for my birthday after having had an incredible experience there. She has told them it was my birthday and asked to have a good table. We were led downstairs to the basement were it seemed no one was getting served and no one looked particularly happy to be there. After 20 minutes of waiting for a waitress to order a basic bottle of Chablis with a price tag 75 pounds, we started to get impatient. We ordered with Ben, who gave us great recommendations on what food to eat and then we sat waiting for over an hour without any food and a finished bottle of wine. The prawn crackers arrived, they were very dry, almost stale. Having asked the waiter when our food would be coming they kept telling us it was on its way, and they were most rude and arrogant. Ben finally comes over and tells us our food had been dropped on the floor which is the oldest lie in the book!!!My dad finally asked for the manager to bring us the bill for the bottle of wine and we left. What shocked me the most was that we got absolutely no apology for this ruined evening, they were well aware it was my birthday and for the price and expectation of this restaurant this really isnt what you would expect at all. They were happy to let us go and walk away having had an awful experience at A Wong. In theory they should be calling my mum today to find out what happened and to try and convince us to come back for a free meal on the house!!!

Had been trying to book a table for ages - couldn't get a time that suited and eventually got a 5.30pm booking. My friend had assured me that A Wong was a higher level than most Chinese restaurants and he was right. The menu is eclectic with twists of familiarity. Pickled cucumber starter was well spiced and moreish, the crab claw is a triumph and the chilli chicken is excellent - all 'snacks' were attractively presented. Mains of sweet and sour chicken (sounds unadventurous - but try it!) and crispy chilli beef were outstanding. The snow ball meringue may well be the dessert of the year.......Great service and unrushed. Im struggling to think of a better Chinese in London.

This is way better than Five Star. Lunch today is Dim sum. Andrew is in charge where he announces each dish to his staff. The correct person in the chain carries out their job preparing what is called for. Andrew then takes it and plates it. It is like an amazingly well oiled machine. Besides being beautiful they are wonderfully delicious dishesThough many dishes have some spice, most are just enveloped in very tasty sauces.Andrew is modest and unassuming. He is not hyper like many very talented chefs. He is both brilliant and a magician at his craft. The crispy prawn roll was very refined tasting and not heavy like some places. It had trout roe that looked like it was still alive. It had great flavor.I could have made a complete meal out of the pork and prawn dumpling with pork crackling. The clear shrimp dumpling, sweet chilly sauce and rice vinegar cloud was so delicious and refined. It was marvelous. The quail egg had a soft runny center and was surrounded by slivers of fresh ginger. It was delicious. The salt and pepper French bean fritters were lightly battered. There were slices of red chilies and the beans were crunchy and not over cooked. They were AMAZING.The 999 layered scallop puff with XO oil was mild and had a medley of vegetables. Including yellow peppers and a sweet/slightly tart sauce. The combination of ingredients resulted in a mild taste that was scrumptious. The Isle of Mull seared scallop from Scotland this morning was cooked exactly the way it is supposed to be cooked. It was “scallop” sweet, fresh and delicious. My wife had Sichuanese chicken and peanut bon bon. She raved about it.She also had the Chinese chive pot sticker dumpling with the hot and sour sauce. She raved about that too. She rarely raves about any food dishes.I ordered the won ton soup with dried shrimp cheung fun. It was served in two parts. One was small rolls of rice noodles and the other was the actual soup. They call them dried shrimp but they were large and moist and perfectly cooked. Just a spectacular soup.I had the steamed duck yoke custard bun. This was far better than any version that I haver had.I think I just died and went to heaven.Iris waited on us and did a great job.I just returned to our hotel from dinner at A Wong. Though they have one dish that has four dim sum in it, I prefer to pick things non dim sum.Our waiters this evening were Mini from China and Ronald. Roger the manager greeted us and remembered us from last year. They did a great job taking care of us.I started with the steamed king crab claw, velveted egg white and aged rice wine.It was truly stunning. It was served in a relatively flat plate. There were some large chunks of king crab claw swimming in a sea of velvety liquid and lots of shreds of more king crab meat. It was stupendous. The king crab meat was sweet.Andrew was able to get some turbot from the day boat this morning. It was grilled in chilly butter with pickled cockles and roasted bone marrow. What a phenomenal combination. Rich yet not cloying. My wife ordered the crispy chilly caramelized beef and pickled carrots, beef XO. It looked great and she liked it and did not leave any on the plate. For dessert I had the meringue with ice shavings of lychees and passion fruit. Also with pomelo and mango . The meringue was soft. I mixed all these together and had a magical dessert. The passion fruit was great with the lychees. The pomelo was great with the mango. They all went together with each other.Today was a dining delight made in heaven by an amazingly talented chef.If you can get a reservation run and enjoy.

A Wong is a nicely set out restaurant. Some of their dishes were exquisite, for example the crab in peppercorn sauce. However the most expensive dish on the the menu (Wagyu beef, which we were most excited about), was quite disappointing. Unless you like blue meat, you would not enjoy it that much (not worth £28). The overall restaurant was nice but I would not argue it is the best Chinese restaurant in the city.

When my son booked this restaurant, I wasn't thrilled as I have never been that keen on Chinese food. However, I went with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised. There was a difficulty to start with as my wife doesn't eat red meat. The tasting menu had no flexibility and half of the dishes had pork beef or lamb. Since the whole table had to have the tasting menu that was never going to work. After staring at the long list of a la carte dishes, we asked the waiter to take charge and just bring a whole selection, focusing on fish, chicken and vegetables. This proved to be fantastic approach as we were then treated to some amazing dishes. The turbot was excellent, the cured sea bass was delicious although a squeeze of citrus would have raised it to another level. The huge prawns were very good. Luckily, we had one each otherwise there might have been a fight. The food was well complimented by a delicious Meursault and I have to say that I am a convert to Chinese cooking at this level.

I booked the Forbidden City private dining facility at A Wong for a surprise birthday party for my husband. From the start of the party planning to final delivery the restaurant was exemplary in every way. The Forbidden City and Madam Wong's Lounge has its own bar and is a perfect intimate party space for a maximum of 24 guests. Its decor is redolent of decadent 1920's Shanghai and subtly lit to provide a great ambience for a private event. Our party was last night and the food was the best Chinese cuisine we have experienced including in Michelin Star restaurants in Hong Kong. Many familiar Chinese culinary concepts are present in the dishes, but elevated to new heights, others are simply wonderfully delicious new experiences. Our menu for the evening was varied, beautifully presented and bursting with wonderful flavours - really outstanding. The front of house staff were charming, friendly, courteous, attentive and accommodating. They did everything possible to make the party special. We couldn't fault them. One of my favourite cuisines is Asian and I used to frequent HKK before it closed down. Have eaten locally at Zenxi and the pop up Thai night at Channels on Wednesday, which are both very good (and will review at some point soon) but wanted something that extra bit special and have heard great things about this Michelin starred restaurant. On 1st impresssion its very un-imposing with very little grandure from the outside, but when you enter, you enter a different world. With decor and aromo that excites you about the meal ahead. After a warm and friendly greeting and confirmation of our booking we opted to visit the hidden bar downstairs for a cocktail or 2 and some giant sized crackers to nibble on. I am not sure how well this space is utilised as there only seemed capacity for a few diners. Anyway part way through our 2nd cocktail we were invited to our table, we had opted for the Taste of China set menu and also the wine pairing. Both food and drink quality were excellent and worked very well together. The food took you on a journey of places with varying flavours, aromas and textures whilst the wines were balanced to stand up to those flavours. Some may deem the overall bill as expensive, but in a era where people are becoming more conservative with their spending - if you are going to spend well, at least spend on quality and I thought the price was pretty bang on for the quality and experience we had and would definitely recommend.

We visited A Wong for the first time last week and enjoyed the Taste of China menu. The food was amazing - wonderfully presented, well timed between courses and as for the taste, you couldn’t want for more. Alongside this the service was exceptional - attentive without being over bearing. It was so nice to have an explanation about the heritage of each dish too. We will definitely be back.

We had dinner at A Wong a couple of months ago and it was excellent so we thought we would come back and try their lunch menu which is very different from the dinner menu and focuses on dim sum dishes. We had booked for a late lunch around 1:30 pm and as with when we went for dinner the restaurant was full. The service to start with was very slow. We were shown to our table, given the menus, ordered drinks and then nothing happened for about 15 minutes. However after our orders were taken the service was very slick and efficient. Whilst the snack dishes on the menu are common to both lunch & dinner, the lunchtime menu focuses on dim sum dishes. We ordered a few things for the snack menu. The A Wong cracker — an enormous prawn cracker with sweet chilli sauce on it, the fried shrimp with lemongrass and lettuce and the pork spare rib. All the dishes were excellent though to pay £7 for one spare rib even though the thick sticky sauce was amazing seems to me to be well over the top. The rest of the meal was made up with dim sum dishes. The price on the menu is for 1 dim sum therefore you need to double both the quantity and price if you want to share the same dishes. We choose the pork & prawn dumpling with a tiny piece of crackling, the quail egg croquette, a soft yolk in the middle of a croquette, crispy won tons with chilli —- so good we ordered another dish of these and chicken with peanut bonbon. All the dishes were excellent, beautifully cooked and presented. The service after the initial delay was excellent and we both had an excellent meal which we thoroughly enjoyed and one which was completely different from eating dinner there.

Easy to miss this little dim sum restaurant behind Victoria station in Wilton street is a fantastic find, the steamed buns were the fluffiest lightest buns I have ever tasted, to call them cloud-like would not be overstating the praise, All of the fillings were delicately spiced and presentation beautiful, The small open kitchen manned by 9 chefs exuded the serene calm of a restaurant at the top of its game. We stopped before we caught the Gatwick express, so glad we ate here and not at Gatwick

If you love Chinese food, you might be disappointed by this one unfortunately.... service was excellent as you would expect from a Michelin restaurant. We had the tasting menu as we wanted to get the full A Wong experience. Quite excessive with 19 or so courses. By the end of it, we were stuffed. Some courses were a genuine discovery and quite flavorful. Some were a bit of a let down, especially the dim sum. Overall really good food but not quite the unique and different experience I was looking for. Just packaged differently.

What a fantastic restaurant, I had lunch yesterday with one of my best friends and we both agreed that it was one of the best meals we have ever had. We are fortunate enough to eat at many top places but we both thought that A Wong is very special. It was a nice leisurely lunch with a couple of bottles of wine a nice Burgandy and a Ribera del Duero, every dish we ordered was so good and as most of them are individual portions you can order 3-4 things then have a break and order more. The staff are very friendly and professional and at the end of our meal I made a point of thanking the owner Andrew who was with his team of chefs cooking in the open kitchen. Thanks to all at A Wong for a lovely lunch.

Andrew Wong has recently been awarded the “best restaurateur” by GQ FOOD and DRINK awards so is very highly regarded in the profession and it is really deserved as he runs a very good place . It is a fairly casual restaurant with an open plan kitchen and counter seats as well as tables , we sat at the kitchen table and enjoyed watching Andrew at work . We enjoyed chilli chicken and snails, crab claw , scallop & wasabi, sweet and sour ribs , Peking duck , chicken wing stuffed with prawns and black bean sauce , seasonal vegetables & black truffle, goldfish dumplings and fois , bananas and chocolate desert all enjoyed with 2 reasonably priced bottles of white wine . The staff are excellent and very well trained. Do not hesitate in booking here because it is first class .

This is a fantastic restaurant and the food is excellent. The restaurants serves dim sum dishes at lunch time though in the evening the menu choices widen to offer a full selection of meat, fish & shellfish dishes. We had made a reservation for an early dinner — whenever we had walk in on the off chance to see if there were any tables available before they had always been full so making a reservation is a must. (at weekends the restaurant can be full and only offer a waiting list 5 or 6 weeks in advance). The restaurant is quite small with an open kitchen on the right as you enter. There are bar stools around the kitchen so you can eat and watch the chefs preparing your dishes. We had reserved those seats overlooking the kitchen which really added to the enjoyment of the meal.. The owner was working in the kitchen that evening and it was lovely to talk to him about his food and an experience to watch his chefs cooking the dishes in their woks — it was real theatre. We chose a selection of appetisers to start with — prawn crackers ( not your usual ones but a very large cracker the size of a small frying pan that was fried in front of us — at one end some sweet chilli sauce had been drizzled over it), 2 dim sum platters each containing 3 different dim sums, lemongrass & peanut wrap with brown shrimp, a quarter of crispy duck and finally an amazing pork belly — perfectly cooked and then cut into small cubes with a thin piece of crackling placed on the top. The dishes were all amazing, perfectly balanced and full of flavour. For our main courses we had some steamed rice with sweet and sour chicken and because we were enjoying the meal so much we ordered some crispy chilli beef which we again watched being cooked for us. The beef was served in strips and had been fried in a light almost tempura batter and served on top of a salad with chilli dressing. Again the main courses were excellent. The wine list is extensive and not surprising for a Michelin starred restaurant on the expensive side with the majority of wines being between £30 & £50 per bottle. The service throughout was excellent and very efficient. The meal was wonderful and we have already booked to go back to A Wong again to try their dim sum lunch menu.

Course after course of the most delicious food from around China and each explained in detail and the area it originated from. We felt like we’d travelled that evening. Service was faultless and friendly and the dishes were beautiful to behold and delicious to eat. This was a 17 course tasting menu at £95 and each course was a mouthful, so at the end we didn’t feel uncomfortable at all. It was all pure theatre. We have already recommended it and will go back again.

We went for lunch in Pimlico and the Michelin starred restaurant was full. But everything was very efficient – we were seated at the bar, swiftly served a drink, and then escorted to our table within five minutes of the reserved time. The Dim Sum menu was exemplary – the flavours sharp and precise and the saucing universally excellent. This was up there with the best examples of the genre, including those in Hong Kong. Dim sum may be very fashionable, but when it is done well, and served so that the dishes flow one after the other, not rushed but without long gaps, it really makes a fine lunch. It is admittedly a rather unhealthy meal, with little vegetable and lots of fat, but all the more fun for that as an occasional treat. Despite being crowded the restaurant was relatively quiet and we were able to have a pleasant conversation as well as eating. And the price at under £60 each including drinks seemed quite reasonable.

I tried the downstairs bar today. I had the feeling I was being "checked out" at the door, as I was on my own and was not eating, so did not fit any standard profile. But I was shown in. The people did not know that I live locally and have spent a lot of money in the (very good) restaurant, but they should have assumed this. The service thereafter was friendly, but not polished. I had an Old Fashioned infused with duck fat. I managed to finish it, but needed a regular one afterwards to clean my palate -- which was alright, but not outstanding. No nibble was served with these premium-priced drinks, but that may be normal in a Chinese ambience. When I left, my coat was handed back to me, but no attempt was made to help me put it on. So, OK, but unpolished.

Had the service matched the quality of the food, I would have given an overall rating of "Excellent". But when you have 1 Michelin star and practice these price levels, you cannot afford to NOT have a service level to match. Although every member of staff was very friendly, welcoming and "present", it felt like "machine gun" service... Let me explain, I ordered approximately 6 different a la carte dishes: I had barely eaten half of the first one when Nos 2, 3, and then 4, 5 and 6 arrived, within about 60 seconds of each other! I signalled this as subtly and politely as I could, but it was too late: the "machine gun" could not be stopped or slowed down. Then, supreme irony, I had to wait a good 20 minutes for my dessert (ordered at the end of the meal) and a further 25 minutes for the bill! It is sad to see how simple mistakes like this can spoil the pleasure of a really excellent cuisine. Sad conclusion: I will probably never go back.

The main dining room was packed upstairs and they showed us to a "secret" door in back down a flight of stairs to the bar. This is a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant that serves Michelin-starred food, rather than being an overly formal/stuffy place. A decent wine list at sensible prices compliments the food menu.
