As we entered the picturesquely quaint, small town of Kirkcudbright, my mum and I felt right at home. This was reflected by the stellar reception and personal, warm welcome of both the staff and chef of this wonderfully cute, little restaurant. Our order was taken, prepared and served quickly. Enough time for a nice chat and to get comfy. The food itself would easily put a number of luxury restaurants I've experienced to shame. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, and it was absolutely delicious. Thank you Will and staff for a wonderful evening in your cozy and comfortable establishment. We will return. Highly recommended.

We took our staff here for a late Christmas meal. The attention to detail from Chef Will Gill and communication with him regarding our menu was fantastic, he even had Christmas crackers for us which was a bonus, considering it was March!! The meal itself was fantastic, starters, mains and sweets were had and simply could not fault anything. The staff are attentive, the drinks flowed and a brilliant night had by us all, we shall be back very soon. Thank you to Will, Tracy and staff for accommodating us and giving us such an amazing evening.

I would like to commend the front-of-house gentleman with whom I spoke twice today. First this morning to make a reservation, second - when because of unforeseen circumstances - I had to cancel with three hours notice. I understand how restaurants have suffered in the last two years and we all know from the press the high levels of "no shows". The gentleman to whom I explained my situation was polite, courteous and professional. It has redoubled my enthusiasm for tasting the food at this restaurant which has such good reviews.

We visited in August 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed our food, the service and overall experience. The menu this time was similar if not exactly the same. Good welcome, bread served and drinks orders taken. Lovely home made bread. Starters were great - scallops and the pear and goats cheese.I had enjoyed the Dijon pork last time but decided to have a change so ordered ribeye steak. Unfortunately it was not as tender as hoped and while £5 was taken off the bill it was still a disappointment. My wife’s choice of trout was very good. The deserts of crème brûlé were good. The restaurant was very busy, only one vacant table so unfortunately the service was too slow, whether waiting for table to be cleared or for waiting on the bill. We waited patiently but other diners approached the bar to ask for theirs but had to sit back down and wait.So while the cooking and dishes are predominantly great, and the butcher blamed for the steak; I think that the service should be improved by having more staff or by limiting the number of customers. I don’t think that saying it is a small restaurant is a justification for slow service.

A mid week dinner looked promising, the menu looked good. We were greeted by a friendly waitress and showed to our table. Warm and friendly ambiance. I ordered a starter haggis and black pudding, followed by sausage and red cabbage. I had a very nice pint of Galloway gold, served at a perfect temperature. My starter and main were both very tasty. Clearing away between courses was on the slow side. The wait for a dessert menu was much longer, I nearly gave up. When I did get my dessert it was very good, Creme brûlée. We asked for our bill and then waited 10- 15 minutes for it to arrive. Having checked it when we got home we had been overcharged for our starter. All in all a distinctly average meal with very slow service.

We visited on a friends recommendation whilst visiting Borgue. The food is top restaurant quality at a very reasonable price. There is no stinginess to the portion sizes either. My wife was blown away by the red cabbage which she says was the best she had ever had. The whole meal was top class with all top quality ingredients. The dessert was absolute class. The staff were attentive and very approachable. If we only lived closer it would certainly be a regular visit. We wish Will (the chef} continued success.

We have just had the most wonderful meal at the Auld Alliance, Kirkudbright, exquisitely cooked and served by an obviously very talented chef and his staff. One of us had the pork and the other the stuffed pepper - each was fine dining at its best, with unusual but delicious tastes. We have eaten in many restaurants both in the UK and abroad…. This is easily up there with the Michelin starred ones, despite the sole owner/chef. Thank you for the lovely dining experience! We’ll pass it on !!!!

Stand out courses included local scallops (their sweetness balanced beautifully by the acidity of tomato and apple), the Tagine (most flavourful I’ve had outside Africa) and the St Clements dessert - a perfect palate cleanser on a hot evening (the surprise of fresh firm and tangy segments against the desserts zingy and sweet softness. The chef is accomplished at balancing flavours and textures.Traditional decor, music and ambiance. After studying the reviews and the menu I had high hopes of a memorable meal. However, for my taste, the dishes were disappointing. Somehow the scallops starter accompaniements didn't enhance the shellfish, but detracted from it. Likewise the pork with cider and the lamb didn't land knock-out blows. Individually the cuisine and ingredients were inventive (hence 4 stars) they just didn't work together.

Yet another excellent meal at the Auld Alliance. My wife and I both had the I had haggis to start, and my wife had the local crab tart; both were delicious. For mains, we both had the lamb tagine," which was the first time of trying, and we both thought it was fantastic. The lamb was cooked to perfection (as have all the meals we have eaten at the restaurant. The food was hot, as were the plates and the food well presented on the plate.Lemon posset and an ice cream to finish a fantastic meal. The service was efficient and friendly without being overbearing, and given there is only one chef, the meal was served quickly and cooked to a turn. You may hear the microwave ping from time to time, but the food is not cooked in a microwave, but some vegetables are finished; this ensures the food is piping hot when passed out to be served. We have sought clarification on a previous visit.Due to the current Covid restrictions, the restaurant is never overcrowded, and since the restaurant does not "turntables", there is no pressure to hurry your meal. Well done to the waiting staff and the single-handed chef for yet again producing a terrific meal at what we thought was a very reasonable price. As "Arnie" would say, "we will be back"!

We ordered a haggis parcel and crab tart that where both out of this world, great start to the evening. The food is of a very low standard. As we were sat close to the kitchen, we could here the ping of a microwave being used continuously. My main was so hot on the outside but cold in the middle. Three tiny bits of smoked haddock in an over salted watery sauce, cubes of under cooked potatoes. Vegetable side was raw with an unpleasant green dressing. Partners pork was dry and nothing like menu description. Waitress saw my plate of barely touched food and asked was anything wrong. Told her my thoughts on it and she said quite a few people had said the same! Got back to our holiday cottage and my partner was very ill.

Both my dad and my brother had the lamb tagine. Best lamb they have ever tasted! I had the famous Cullen skink gratin. (Smoked haddock) so good! We also had the pork belly, trout, crab, haggis…… all fantastically served and tasted delicious….. every plate clean. Some had space for ice cream from Glenn Urr….. honey, whiskey and oatmeal was the favourite. All in all a fantastic night was had by all. The service was undisputedly the best by far. Firstly, my haggis-based starter was absolutely delicious. I had been determined to try haggis on my Scottish holiday so, as haggis was not offered as a main course, I plumped for the starter. It was created with black pudding, bacon, and served with a creamy whisky sauce. It was elegantly presented and tasted divine. It set me up nicely for the main course, which I was greatly looking forward to. I should have suspected a problem when the special of the day was noted on a separate sheet to the main menu, with the heading "Christmas Eve Special". Some recycling of the old menu, I thought. Looking back, it seems more likely to me that the Dover Sole special on Christmas Eve had not sold well and had spent lockdown in the restaurant freezer. The fish was the size of a whale, overhanging the plate on both ends. I had to swap with my wife, whose fish was even bigger. It was also about 2 inches thick, so there was a heck of a lot of fish there. Oversized portions tend to put me off anyway, but the Dover Sole was overcooked and rather dry. That, and the menu header, is what has convinced me that the fish last saw daylight in 2020. Apart from the caper sauce, the fish only came with a small side salad (the same as the one that my wife received with her starter). I was not impressed.Putting this back into perspective: The restaurant is pleasant; the staff were very friendly and attentive; the drinks prices were most reasonable and, most impressively, our starters were great. I agree with another reviewer that the owners must have had a hard time of it during the lockdown and were trying to recoup some of their losses. However, if they try to do this at the expense of their customers then the short-term problem with turn into a terminal one.

Firstly, the waitress service was excellent, friendly and prompt. Menu choice is fine, although the vegetarian choices could be expanded. I had the Moroccan tagine, (nicely done, decent portion) to start, followed by pork fillet. Again - beautifully cooked, (no pink, only slightly juicy), varied veg fine, not overly large, but the sauteed potato was a desperately tiny triangle. The spicy bread was tasty and unusualMy partner had crab salad to start (this was fine and tasty) and stuffed pepper as main which she found a little disappointing. Nice flavours and textures but lacking substance. The beetroot sabise was colourful but overall too liquid without the balance and texture of any grains/nuts/small pasta usually involved in stuffed peppers. A small piece of roasted fennel and several halved cherry tomatoes were the only 'filling' to the pepper which was served on a bed of puy lentils. Having perused the reviews before our trip to Scotland she felt let down that the meal didn't meet her (admittedly high) expectations. Excellent choice of local beers. but, my word, the effects of the pandemic are clear, as the owner is clearly needing to recoup financial losses from the enforced Covid closures.

We visited here twice during our stay in Kirkcudbright in the midst of Covid restrictions. The restaurant was comfortable, the tables were well spaced out in pleasant surroundings, and we felt perfectly safe. Contrary to another review we liked the room which was somewhat quirky and like dining in an interesting individual’s home. The menu was well thought out, the dishes well presented and the food quite delicious. The haggis starter was excellent, the citrus desert was outstanding and the fish dishes top class. The only reason we haven’t given it five stars is that the young waitresses could do with a bit more customer service training to engage with diners. This may be a confidence issue; they were very pleasant but they lacked knowledge of the menu details and there was little contact other than the basic service.

We booked a meal here during the jazz week. It really was a mixture of the superb and the average. First the music. A competent pianist playing tunes from the sixties like "Moonriver" can in no way be described as jazz. It even encouraged a couple of diners to sing along which was a bit cringeworthy. The food was interesting, well cooked and tasty. The starter of black pudding and haggis wrapped in pastry and bacon, in a peppercorn sauce was possibly the best starter I have ever eaten. The main courses were at odds. My wife had the chicken dish which was a generous serving of 2 chicken breasts (but no veg). I had the pork loin which was tiny and came with some rice but also no vegetables. We decided to finish with ice cream after seeing the huge portions served at the next table. Once again we were disappointed when our servings were about half that of the diners on the adjacent table. Consistency of portion size is fundamental and people are going to feel aggrieved if they lose out. I did speak to the chef/owner and he did give us a small discount. Overall I would say that he is a talented chef who serves tasty food but attention to portion size is needed and as for the jazz....

This was the first of 2 restaurants around the Kirkcudbright area that suprised us with the quality of their food especially for vegetarians. The food was excellent and different and the deserts amazing.

It’s easy to see why this is so highly rated. We had a truly excellent meal here in an attractive setting with great service. Jenny just loved her scallops with chorizo, served on the half-shell, and was equally enthusiastic about her Cullen skink. I meanwhile was tucking into a Galloway cheese tart and delicious dressed salad, followed by a buckwheat galette with roasted veg and a slightly spicy tomato sauce - again both seriously tasty dishes and beautifully presented. With a couple of glasses of wine apiece that was a great meal, and the warm welcome completed the package. Come here if you ever get the chance and want a really lovely meal in Kirkcudbright - you’ll not regret it.

It doesn’t look a lot from the outside but this is an excellent little restaurant with quite a different menu, we had the trout and the Cullen Skink and both were very good. The waiting staff were being trained on the job but were already very competent and polite. I would think it’s not a place to go without booking.

This small restaurant is on the first floor, above a cafe in the centre of the town, within easy walking distance of the Selkirk Arms. The menu had a Scottish/French spin to it. Some starters had very similar sauces to some mains, so worth checking this out before ordering so you don't get a repeated flavour. Couldn't fault the service or quality of the food and wine. I'd return.

Went to this restaurant after looking at reviews on TripAdvisor and it was a little gem. Tucked up a small stairway on a road off the main road it was a comfortable and cosy venue. We were a group of 6 and although the restaurant was relatively small they accomadated us easily . Others in the restaurant appeared to include a meal for 2 and a family gathering of 4 - the restaurant catered well to all our needs. Waiting staff were friendly and attentive without making us feel they were intrusive. (even gave us recommendations on what to do in the area) The meal itself included bespoke artisan bread that was served warm and I believe was made by the restaurant. Main meals were reasonably priced and there was a good range to choose from.

We loved our meal (4 adults) at the Auld Alliance. The young lads who served us were great and attentive and the food was delicious. There was a good choice of specials and the food and wine was reasonably priced but all cooked perfectly and clearly using good quality ingredients. The Cajun chicken I tried a bit of tasted brilliant and my Cullen Skink gratin was lovely. It’s only a small place so do make sure you book or you’ll be disappointed. The homemade bread was a lovely touch too. Thank You for looking after us Bradley and Thank You Will for sorting the booking! Sadly I didn’t take any pictures... hope to be able to go back again.

This small upstairs restaurant in central Kirkcudbright was a very pleasant experience. From the moment we walked in to a welcome to the moment we left replete after a delightful meal. The chef does like his spices but they complemented the food rather than overpowered it. Meat and fish are locally obtained and cooked while you wait. Service is very friendly and attentive. We both had crab fish cake starters and a plaice main course and all was prepared and served well.

Visiied this on a Thursday night (they only open Thurs-Saturday, plus Wednesdays in Summer) whilst staying at the local caravan site. Fantastic food, with terrific sauces created by chef and proprietor Will Gill. Students waiting on table were so friendly and helpful, a tribute to their upbringing and Will's selection - made it feel like eating with friends, not in a restaurant. Wine very good value, and overall prices a pleasant surprise. Not to be missed if you want an nice meal out in Kirkcudbright, which is a great town to visit.

We arrived a little out of season and it was a Wednesday evening unfortunately the restaurant owner we were the only ones in that night, but anyone thinking of going do not let my word above put you off. From the moment we go there we were greeted by a more than capable young man who was our waiter for the night and who not only gave the right amount of chat but also gave us space and left us alone when we needed it. The food well I chose a starter of fresh Kirkcudbright scallops which were cooked perfectly, my main I chose chicken which again was so moist and the delivery was very nicely presented on the plate with seasonal vegetables and dessert I chose the chocolate and raspberry torte which was very smooth and light. All in all my husband had some delicious delights too though i cannot remember as our evening was accompanied by a full bodied bottle of red. Thanks Auld Alliance lovely evening for our 25th

It is a shame that this restaurant has limited opening times or we would have eaten here the whole week of our stay in Kirkcudbright! The food here is imaginative and delicious. My husband's starter was black pudding and haggis wrapped in bacon in a whiskey sauce followed by a main called Ronan's Adventure (pork). I had chicken in a balsamic, onion and mushroom sauce. Beautiful! The decor is pleasant (looked newly refurbished) and the service was very professional. Enjoyed it immensely and would certainly recommend.

We came here for dinner last week and it was beautiful, we booked in advance (a must). We arrived and were immediately seated, the waitress offered to take our coats which I thought was really nice, considering in most places your expected to put them on the back of your chair, which was what I was expecting to do. We were then given the menu and special list which was well balanced, not to much of the same thing. I had fishcakes which you could tell were freshly made and the trout. Both well cooked and full of flavour, I could have ate both courses everyday. My partner had scallops, which were well cooked and a good sized portion for the price and in comparison to a lot of places! For a main he had the steak which I tried and it was so fresh. I can’t stress the quality and freshness of the food we had. Well worth the money.
