A great real Italian cafe/restaurant, appealing menu, stand-out ingredients, generous portions, fair prices, great coffee, efficient service, a pearl. Refreshing, after avoiding the chains.

It was a very unpleasant experience from start to finish. I'd avoid the venue because the food was horrific..old and stale, greasy. The hygiene rating of 1 is suitable considering how they store food. Really awful staff greeting and repetitive questions not actively listening to customers.

We thought we'd found a new place to visit, for outings to the studio cinema nearby, and for bringing friends who've just moved to Barnes. But no, we won't back - and we're certainly not recommending it to anyone we know! It looked more osteria than trattoria, though prices suggested ristorante. Ah well, we were hungry and had an hour or two before the film. Black linguine with shrimp didn't look very special in the chiller cabinet, but it tasted really great. My husband had a very good lasagne; we shared a little salad. The owner/manager said the red wine was superb - and it was. Then we were treated to the rudest waitress we've ever encountered.............. We had to ask to pay at the till, where she barely looked up at us. £76. Yes, you read that correctly. I think I went into shock, handed over £80 and followed my husband out. Two minutes later, we looked again at the bill - £21 for the salad.............?! Back we went. She went from sullen to hostile, as her manager sorted it out, and handed us back £20. We thanked him - said "no problem." And out the door again. The glass-fronted restaurant gave us the perfect view of the waitress - glaring and glowering at me fixedly. I stood, surprised - she did not shift her grimace from me. I went back in - she came over - saying "What - AGAIN?!" - from sullen to hostile to aggressive................ I told the manager that he had been fine - but that no customer deserved that kind of treatment. She started growling at us: "Why are you talking to him? Talk to ME!" Er.......no thanks. Wow. We tried not to let it spoil our evening. I hope she doesn't get the chance to spoil anyone else's - so if you're booking, you might want to ask who's working that day. I'm perfectly sure the owners will know what you mean.

We stumbled across this little place after watching the rugby - cold and hungry on a Saturday night everywhere we knew of in Barnes was fully booked. We saw a couple dining here and thought we would give it a go, by this point we were so hungry we couldn't have cared less. What a joyous surprise!!! Delicious starters of stoned baked garlic pizza bread, burrata, and calamari. The boys' pizza they both declared were delicious, the seafood paccheri was positively overflowing with seafood, and my lobster linguine was fabulous. Top this off with a very well priced and delicious Sangiovese and it was a pretty perfect end to the evening! My only minute criticism is that the formica tables don't exactly scream "restaurant" on a Saturday night - ideal during the day I am sure, but throwing a simple white table cloth over them at night would make all the difference, and I am sure would bring more trade to this great little local

I wasn’t happy about this and called to see if they’re was anything they could do they said “no sorry there is nothing we can do okay thanks bye”. I also paid £8.50 and it says £7.95 on the website. I have visited this Italian restaurant many times with my family over the past 6 months and we have all fallen in love!! Before Arte Chef there was nowhere to buy a decent pizza in this area - I have lived in Barnes for the past 29 years and Pizza Express and Ask are no where near as good as Arte Chef. It is a business set up by two Italian friends who both share a love of creating delicious dishes for all customers. Their menu choice is not huge but offers fabulous pizzas, great pasta dishes and excellent main courses too. The best thing about Arte Chef in my opinion is the fact that the food is all made freshy on site and that the service is fantastic. Davide, Luca and Martina have all been excellent hosts and really impressed my family on every visit. We will certainly be returning very soon and cannot wait to eat another delicious meal at Arte Chef!!

Arte Chef is at the Castlenau end of Barnes and by observation is increasingly attracting new and more customers. We started using it for early morning coffees and pastries.Seeing the food being prepared for lunch, we returned one lunch time and were delighted with the huge range of Italian food, prepared on site together with the Pizzas cooked in the restaurant oven Having now tried four to five different dishes I can recommend the menu. and the winesThe restaurant is light, airy has seating in the front and a delightful rear patio. The staff are just so mfriendly and helpful and assist us each time with our elderly, disabled family member. Her coffees are made to her special request without the need to ask.In the evening the tables are laid up for dinner with pleasant candles on the table giving an intimate Bistro feel. One extra 'topping on the pizza' is, like Gails in Barnes they do not allow dogs into the restaurant. Who doesn't like dogs but not under your feet, at the table and being dropped food bits.Well done Arte Chef

This cafe-restaurant in Barnes Church Street serves all day: pastries and coffee in the mornings; panini and pastas at lunch and a full dinner service in the evening. I’ve bought coffee there but never eaten until deciding to give it a try after visiting the Olympic cinema opposite. It was great. Friendly, knowledgeable service; a fair range of dishes and wines. We started with pizza bread topped with tomatoes cooked in their wood oven: crisp with a freshly- made sauce. My Scialatielli (thick spaghetti with courgettes, pancetta and pecorino in a creamy sauce) was delicious, the baby courgettes still with bite even though finely sliced. The wild boar ragu was rich with pieces of meat rather than mince. Excellent. The tiramisu for dessert was lovely, although perhaps a touch more liqueur needed. Overall, a delightful surprise and a return visit a must.

Lunchtime visit.Entered the place and even if not very busy we got nearly ignored. We decided to walk through and reach a nice and cosy back garden table. We sat down. It took unnecessarily around 15 minutes to get some menus and the table cleaned.Asked to the unsmiling waitress which were the pasta dishes of the day (as suggested by the menu to do) she unconvincingly listed what we had seen on display in large trays by the entrance (and she had to go back and check as she forgot one of the three while talking to us)... therefore it meant precooked. One particular pasta I was about to order was black spaghetti with prawns but when the waitress suggested to have it with pesto and parmesan as it should be eaten she got me out of business both for the reason she was implying the way she said that that I didn't understand about food had I ordered without pesto and parmesan and also as in my fairly reasonable experience and taste fish still doesn't go with cheese or at least prawns do not go with parmesan in my palate (even less with pecorino had they made the pesto properly). We ordered pizza and a 'saltimbocca' (stuffed pizza bread served with salad according to the menu) as they have a proper pizza oven (even if gas fired I think) in the middle of the place and they are from Naples.Drinks and food got delivered fairly quickly.Pizza was pretty good. Good dough, good ingredients and well cooked. 'Saltimbocca' was good but salad was very little and unappealing on the plate, just a little more than decoration. How good is the pizza? Well I wouldn't say it's the best pizza in London as to me it is comparable to Franco Manca where the dough is slightly better and Rossopomodoro where the tomato taste is unbeatable (both I consider very good pizza places even if are chains) and price wise this place sits in the middle... But for location in Barnes and one or two miles around it is the best pizza you can get, correctly priced. We finished the food and got completely ignored by our waitress who walked past us several times for many minutes even when they eventually came withdraw the empty plates did not asked if we wanted dessert (which we would have had) or coffee ... While waiting for ever I also noticed few things around.-A close table with 2 Italians (Neapolitans to be precise) even if not in the menu managed to have a tomato spaghetti dish freshly cooked just asking for it- the second woman serving other tables was more smiling and also apologised if anyone had to wait a little longer as the place got busy- in one of the walking ignoring us our waitress noticed a dog at a close table and she returned with some food that was fed directly from her hands to the dog's mouth after petting and giving large strokes to the dog face and shoulders (in my opinion even if she got back and washed her hands this was totally inappropriate to see at a restaurant)- there are at least 2 rusty nails coming out from the side wall of the back garden where we were sitting in a little dangerous position if you sit close- the chef/owner came out and looked and sounded friendly honest and skilled while talking.- a nearby table ordered also a 'saltimbocca' which came with a proper large and nuce salad with it showing inconsistency at least in what you get - as a I heard another table ordering a coffee by shouting to the waitress (instead of being asked) I did the same and asked for the bill and it worked. So overall I would have given 3.5 but you can only give 3 or 4 so, mainly based on food (pizza) quality I decided for a 4. Service has got large room for improvement and in my view they would be able to deliver a much greater experience adding fresh-cooked pastas in the menu even at lunchtime.I am not sure how the place works in the evening. I am going back to try it again as it is not easy to get a final opinion. I can see a lot of potential in there currently not able to be fully released when not obscured by the service.Unfortunately (or deliberately?) the place is made to look like a sandwich / coffee shop instead of emphasising on the very good pizza you can get and I am pretty sure main courses too. Need to go back again.

We sat down and after being completely ignored for 20 minutes we went and asked could we order a drink ? The waiter duly came and took our order for food and drink and 20 minutes later we were still waiting for our drink - the food didn't appear either ! The restaurant was only about half full ( we counted 14 other diners ) and all the 9 people outside had been served and were on coffee and a couple only had a pudding . The waiter / manager cleared tables and tidied up various oil, salt and pepper mills but still didn't bring us our order The girl standing behind the counter didn't move at all ! No idea what she was doing . Anyway after 45 minutes we were hungry and thirsty and left . They waiter / manager asked us why we were leaving and when we told him we still hadn't had our drinks or food he shrugged his shoulders and said he was busy . Not a word of of apology either . We won't be returning until there is a change of staff and make no mistake , the pizza here is good but it's very expensive for what it is . Next time we"ll catch the bus and go that bit further to San Remo in North Barnes - such a shame about the staff here !

I love Pizza. Real Pizza, not Pizza-Hut junk food. And Arte Chef offers - without question - one of the best options in SW London. A proper Pizza oven and knowledgeable chef ensures this, and they are open to preparing special requests given they have the ingredients. The venue is small and operation costs undoubtedly high, which explains the Pizzas are not the cheapest. On the other hand quality is there. They operate for the most part as a cafeteria/ casual dining space in the day and have a nice outside patio very family and/or dog friendly. It is a shame in the evening they dont improve ambiance, step-up the a la carte options and work on their wine list (currently just standard no frills), as there is promise. Still, for any pizza lover, it is a must try as a safe bet. (They also make one of the best espresso in the area)

Ideal for a quick lunch or coffee with friends and the decked garden is a real sun trap and lovely in summer. I've been for lunch a couple of times and the food is delicious and fresh; gorgeous pasta and the salad with an aubergine mozzarella melt was heaven. In the evenings it's looked so pretty when I've past and I'm looking for an excuse to go for dinner soon! We're so lucky to have this locally.

I only ate a sandwich, so can't speak for the main dishes, but I was very disappointed. I ordered a Bresaola ciabatta, which arrived with a (very) little salad. The sandwich was bland, so I asked for salt. When I opened up the sandwich, there was one small piece of artichoke sitting on top of a little tomato and 2 pieces of Bresaola. Very sad. However, the salt did help. The salad had nothing on it, so I asked for some salad dressing. Staff couldn't have been more helpful, but why did I even need to ask for those things? The sandwich shouldn't have been tasteless, but why wasn't there salt on the table? Why didn't the salad have a dressing on it, or at least there should have been a bottle on the table. For £6.50 I expected more. With so many other cafes in Barnes - notably Gail's - Arte Chef needs to up its game. As a last point, a loyalty card for the coffee would have been a nice touch. Again, with so many other cafes offering such a scheme, what's my incentive to return?

Well to start, a correction. This very good cafe is not in ALTON Barnes Wiltshire as the current address has it. It is in Barnes, South London.Having got that out of the way it is a very good place for both home made pasta and pukkha oven fired pizzas. My wife's tortellini carbonara was delicious. As was my Crudo Pizza. With a glass of wine each and two coffees the bill came to a very reasonable £ 28.Service was warm and friendly. The interior is relaxed and easy on the eye.Strongly recommended.

This is the first independent pizzeria in Barnes and has it's work cut out if it wants to do well with the locals here. At the time of writing it has been open less than a week. The place is bright, airy and perfect for a sumer setting but it remains to be seen how this will cross over when the cooler winter nights draw in and we want somewhere a bit cosier. The pizza was typically southern with a nice dough but it was soft and under cooked. Attention needs to be paid to the quantity of the toppings - i.e. more needed and spread out nicely. The calzone was flat and far too doughy. It needs to ooze your desired fillings. Sadly it was just like a thin pizza folded over. With a calzone you expect that bit extra with the fillings and I hope they look at this.If these two aspects are addressed by the chef then this place is on to being a winner and will give the local High St chains Pizza Express and Strada a run for their money. Finally, the coffee needs to be smaller and more Italian in size. My double espresso looked like a cup of regular coffee whilst the lady on the next table sent her overly milky cappuccino back stating there was no coffee taste and it was simply too big. We know in Italy the cups are small and the coffee rich. Transpose that here and again you will do very well.I put these little things down to teething and looking forward to reviewing Arte Chef again soon.More from me on Twitter @busy_dan
