Arboreal in The Vale of Glamorgan

We've eaten here twice recently; vegan burger is great and the staff are so friendly and helpful. Would recommend to anyone visiting Cowbridge.

Bank holiday delays created a concern that we would not make our 8pm booking at Arboreal. We phoned on route to advise that we would be a little late, anxious that we may lose our table at this popular restaurant. The owner/ manager Bud answered our call, he could not have been more kind and reassuring. We arrived only slightly late, our friends had arrived on time and had been well looked after. Within moments we relaxed into the warm friendly comfort which was our Arboreal experience. The young woman taking our order was cheerful and efficient, pre meal nibbles were enjoyable and the wine of high quality. Our meals arrived from the brick oven and were a delight. I was impressed with my Mediterranean pulled lamb flatbread, although also tempted by the choices of my fellow diners. Everything was perfectly cooked, delicately presented and delicious. The vegan option was so good that I was denied a taste. The Arboreal is a gem of a restaurant. Relaxed, friendly and utterly unpretentious. We would have to travel many more miles to find a warmer welcome, or food of such a high standard.

Oh boy was I wrong when I thought this was just a pizza place! Absolutely delicious Burrata and pesto pizza and moreish charred Flatbread of Lamb Schwarma were to die for. Very attentive hosts and staff and warm welcome were an extra delight.

It was lovely to return to Arboreal. Sunday lunch was perfect. Vegetables cooked to perfection and meat beautiful and tender Thank you. We will back again soon

Food was disappointing, and essentially amounted to a ‘falafel’ kebab with some shreds of meat. They had run out of the beer that I wanted to order, and the one that was provided was not adequately chilled. Significantly over priced given what was on offer.

Visited for Sunday Lunch. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. Food was good. Got tempted by the BBQ ribs and Spicy chicken wings (table agreed probably the best ribs we’d ever had…really!). Spicy chicken is also good…and it does have a kick to it. Most of us had the Sunday Beef Lunch (great) and one of us pizza (great!). Generous portions of quality food. What’s not to like. Looking forward to ordering a pizza takeaway soon.

What a great time we had at this delightful restaurant on the high street in Cowbridge. It has a great vibe , amazing fun attentive staff and fabulous food . The flatbreads and pizzas were fantastic with great wine to add to it. What a fun night we had . We will definitely be back . Thanks guys you were just what we needed in a night out and dog friendly in the bar area of the restaurant a truly added bonus.

After a long enforced absence it was great to get back in here. It helped us get through the pandemic with its deliveries so being back at their tables was a treat. I’ve long loved their beef burger, this time enjoyed by my wife, but I went for the chicken tikka flatbread. Excellent! So many complimentary but distinctive flavours. Friendly staff as ever and a nice Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Always a pleasure!

This was a lovely little find - amazing food and the bottle of wine was beautiful! Was a tad pricey but I suppose being Michelin that’s what you expect. The flat breads were outstanding had the duck, chicken and lamb though I could taste garlic for like a week after!

Booked last minute and they got us in . They were very friendly but they have a limited drinks menu they faint do cider which is just a thing for me as that’s my go to drink .so I had a lager instead . The food is very tasty with basically posh pizzas . I had a flat bread which is there speciality with duck on . It was very good but a bit pricey . We all had a great lunch but a bit pricey for a lunch pop out . We will be returning but heckling they have now included cider before booking

A little gem of a restaurant in Cowbridge. We are regulars and every time the dining experience never fails. Great starter selection and top pizzas and flatbreads. Also the menu is refreshed on a regular basis. Highly recommended and owners always hands on with support and their service excellent.

We’ve been to Arboreal as a couple, a family, a large group of adults and at each visit Bud and his team have a unique ability to make us feel welcome and cared for every time! The menu speaks for itself and the food is always presented nicely and served with a smile. Our ‘go to’ restaurant in Cowbridge.

Superb meal yesterday, yet again. Must be our 7th or 8th time here and I love how the menu changes so you don’t have to order the same favourites every time. The steak is my favourite but I happily went for lamb this time. So tasty! They catered to my wife’s dietary needs with no bother at all, massive thumbs up. Staff as always, very efficient and friendly. Strongly recommend this place.

We were both so disappointed with the menu. We came to Cowbridge to specifically dine in this restaurant. We looked at the reviews on TA and noted what people had been eating. Lovely pics of steaks and ribs - just what we wanted. So we arrived early and had to go for a coffee while we waited for the restaurant to open at 3pm. Anyway the menu was awful - there must have been 20 different pizzas. I don’t like pizza! Then there were 3 other items. A rack of lamb which I love but I wasn’t going to pay £27.50 for lunch. A beef burger and something else which I’ve forgotten. Anyway hubby went for a pizza which he enjoyed. And I had an over cooked and very dry beef burger! The table behind me were being served nice looking salads !!!!!!! I certainly didn’t see any salads on the menu or I would of gone for one. I looked around for a Special Boards but I couldn’t see one. Staff were friendly and efficient- hence the 3 stars. Menu was a disaster. Would we come back sorry but it’s a no.

I had the ribs to start..described on the menu as the stickiest ever I believe. I’ve had stickier and the ones I was served with were a little bland..very tomatoey as opposed to smokey with a bit of oomph !! I had the lamb pizza...

Arboreal is hands down my favourite place to have lunch. The most creative, colourful and delicious food that's unique to most other restaurants you will visit. Service is fantastic and atmosphere is perfect - Thank you Arboreal!

Arboreal provided the catering for our son and partner's wedding last weekend, and it was absolutely first class. The canapes were delicious and interesting, the salads were amazing and the pizzas fantastic. All provided by delightful staff, even though we could only see their eyes!...

Just had take away meal from Aboreal. We had the Wood Oven Spiced Yoghurt Marinated Chicken main. We collected it piping hot, boxed ready to go. The chicken was soft, succulent and full of flavour. Thank you Aboreal

Me and my partner went to Arboreal on Sunday after a few reccomendations from family that their roasts were really good.I have to say everything about it was delicious from the parsnips to the gravy. Me and my parter are usually super critical as we make a decent roast ourselves! So it says alot that we couldn't find any fault.I'm craving it again already... We both had deserts too, which were delicious. Service was great as always, as well as atmosphere!

Visited a few times for breakfast with my partner which has always been fantastic but had never tried an evening meal until this week, and my god it did not disappoint! Staff are incredibly friendly and go out of their way to make you feel special. We enjoyed our meal so much that we returned on the sunday to try the sunday roast, which included one of the best cuts of beef I have ever had, it comes rare (as it should) so if you like your meat over cooked then make sure you ask for it so! I'm sure they would accommodate this as they are eager to please and you can tell that they genuinely want you to enjoy their food.Can't fault this place and will be visiting again.

My friend and I visited for dinner one weeknight recently after reading the excellent reviews online. I thought the experience was mediocre overall. The service was average, the food was good but not excellent. Even though I booked, on arrival my friend and I waited and after a while I approached someone to say I'd booked and they told us to just sit anywhere. Despite the restaurant being very quiet, it took a good 20 minutes to take our food order. I saw a man from the table next to us walk up to the bar to order another drink as he didn't want to wait any longer. I watched the Chef calling service several times and having to wait for a while before meals were collected; only one member of waiting staff so this could have been the problem. After a while, I saw the waitress setting up a space on the table next to us, and then collecting a pizza from the Chef and placing it on the table. For a minute I thought she was about to sit down and have her dinner! It turns out she was setting it up to take photos for their social media accounts, which was equally shocking. After getting various snaps of the food, then delivered to our table. She then did the same with my meal, right in front of us. If we had been asked, I would have been fine with it, but it's very bizarre to place a customer's meal on the table next to them to take photos of it before serving it to them. Not sure if I would return, but the food itself was quite good.

Ate here on the weekend. Great atmosphere even early on in the evening, fantastic food with great service. Wide array of menu options all produced in the open kitchen. Can’t wait to try it for breakfast. Well worth a visit.

My friend and I went twice to this restaurant. Very good vegan a d vegetarian choices were included in the menu. Lovely wines and staff very friendly and helpful.

We booked the whole of the restaurant for a 60th birthday celebration for family and friends and the evening was a huge success due to the hospitality and professionalism of the staff. We requested our own recipes and the kitchen (thanks Tay!) produced great food. A big thank you to Sam and the rest of the team who were always around making sure everyone was being looked after and having a great time. Arboreal could not have been more helpful or accommodating. We recently visited for a quiet breakfast.

The best food ever in the world. But the waiter I think named billy was a horrible mean young man. I would recommend the pizza and the steak.

Visiting Glamorgan, the rain was falling so we thought we would try Arboreal. Proved to be an excellent choice. Delicious salads and flatbread combinations. Tasty, well presented and ingenious. Good wine list. Plan to return later in the week.

Chose Arboreal for an impromptu Friday evening meal. The restaurant was busy with a friendly lively atmosphere. We had nachos to share to start follows by pizza and the place special with greens and clams. Both meals were well presented and tasty.

A good location on the main street,very helpful and attentive service, staff really took an interest in opinions on the food and drinks on sale. Tumeric latte was very nice, a great alternative to coffee and went well with a strawberry Victoria sponge infused with champagne. A very enjoyable visit!

Managers seem very organised, the bar staff did a good job. The food was good not the best. But there was chef with dread locks who was so insulting towards his colleagues, it was insulting. Recently discovered this gem of a restaurant despite living in Cowbridge for over 20 years. Although I was aware of its great reputation I seemed to support other establishments in the town. Local retailers highly recommended it and since then I am addicted to its food, management and staff . It’s flawless- for the horrible reviewer who complained of “older lady” how more trumpish could one get - I did a quick search on his 2 other restaurant reviews and smiled when I saw he had a problem with another female attendant - enough said in that regard. Arboreal is a fantastic restaurant- not necessarily to the taste of traditionalist who want meat three veg and gravy. It’s menu is innovative and exciting and is a dream to find. It’s trendy and edgy -If it was in London we’d be raving about it. I will point out that I have no affiliation with the owners or staff in fact they won’t even know me from this post - but I can no longer tolerate some of the ridiculous sexist and nit picking reviews - look to the positive reviews that rave about the place - so that Bud and his sister do not decide to abandon us.

We always visit Aboreal as the atmosphere is great, staff are attentive and always friendly. My daughter loved the pizzas and the brownies and never wants to go anywhere else for food- high praise indeed. The menu is varied and the cocktails,wine and gins are of the highest standard.

We were a party of 6 celebrating a birthday. Firstly it is an interesting place suggesting ‘shabby chic’ - a really nice atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and could not do enough for us. We had drinks at the table whilst we perused the really interesting menu. They offer set menus in the week but a la carter at the week-end. They had fish specials which was great for my wife and she opted for the cod with chorizo which was superb. Three of us chose the onglet steak with a rub of our choice and a sauce to go with it-we chose the peppercorn which was dark, rich and lovely and spicy. The steak was cooked medium rare and was perfect.

This place I always return, its friendly service, lovely people, the best coffee and cocktails and foremost the food is made by really thoughtful and experienced chefs. My favourite is the onglet steak, fries and peppercorn sauce. Food is consistently good.

I have persevered with this place as the coffee is good but we won’t be returning the older lady who served us seems quite socially awkward no real smiles I tried striking up a conversation on a couple of occasions but nothing, she may not mean it but she comes across like she’s extremely arrogant and condescending, the food is ok but not good enough To put up with the way she makes you feel ,uncomfortable at best ! My husband is a chef and says she may not be used good customer service or working with people . When we visited on a previous occasion there was a nice young waitress who was lovely and young guys who seemed happy and had positive vibes so couldn’t fault that . But customer service and how you make people feel is really important!

Recently found this little gem and have been multiple times over the last few months for both breakfast, lunch and evening meal. Great food, always excellent service and puppy friendly! I’ve been eating in Cowbridge for years and never ventured down the high street, I’m so glad I have as now we don’t eat anywhere else! Well done team!

Excellent lunch my wife and I had & very reasonable priced. (two course lunch menu £12.95) Fast friendly service, great quality food and overall a fabulous first visit, but not the last! Will definitely visit again next time we’re in Cowbridge.

Popped in for brunch with some friends...menu looked superb if not a little different. There were so many things I fancied. Whether it was my choice that let me down I’m not sure but the others were disappointed too. One had a waffle (apparently this was very tasty), one a breakfast and I had the veggie hash. It was not good - overpowered by onions and peppers. The coffee was Luke warm and incredibly strong (I normally like a strong coffee) in fact far too strong.

I visited Arboreal last night. The welcome, ambiance, friendliness of staff and quality ( esp of the wine) were fabulous. Arboreal has the best coffee in South Wales and is always a pleasure to visit for relaxed, interesting and contemporary dining.

Warm welcome, great service and a lovely menu for all. We're have a low carb lifestyle and found that we had a good choice of foods. Hope to see a low carb dessert choice next time :) Had to come home for my berries and cream but didn't bother us too much.

Amazing lunch and cannot wait to go again

We very much enjoyed our Friday evening at Arboreal - warm welcome; nice atmosphere - busy but relaxed, the music was soothing rather than intrusive; the service was good and the pace suited us perfectly - there is no rush so you can savour the evening; the chefs are talented and passionate with great attention to detail and the food is simply delicious. One thing slightly tainted our evening: the dessert blackboard includes cake options as well as standard desserts and I chose a Portuguese tart to have with my coffee. On receipt of the bill, I was surprised to discover that this single small tart had cost a whopping £6.95. I thought it was a mistake and queried it, but was told it was correct. This felt hugely overpriced compared to the rest of the menu. Despite this, we would return to Arboreal and would recommend to others. Just check cake prices before ordering!

This review covers two visits...

We went straight from school for the Early Bird special. Son had his favourite pizza from the wood fired oven, Mum had the delicious fish and I hit the jackpot with the wonderful Onglet steak. So tasty and tender plus a great fun evening. Never cheap here but we keep going back for the overall experience and consistently fabulous food.

Myself and my partner visited yesterday for breakfast. It was our first visit, and it definitely won’t be our last. The food was delicious, the staff were very friendly, and the whole place had a great vibe - love the open kitchen!

Called ahead to book a table, didn’t get welcomed on arrival or shown to a table. Lady behind the bar pointed to a table and we seated ourselves. We order a sharing starter and mains with a side to share. Our main meals arrived quickly but no starters, when we questioned the waitress she went to check and came back to apologise that she hadn’t wrote this down on our order. We then sat with our meals in front of us with no cutlery and had to go to the bar ourselves to ask. The food itself was the only saving grace it was delicious. However after our meal we asked for the desert menu at around 9.45pm to be told the kitchen had closed we had no previous warning of this and no body came to ask if we were planning on ordering any deserts. Although the food was delicious the service left a lot to be desired. Hostile and rude, especially as they’re supposed to be open until 11pm. How this restaurant got into Michelin Guide 2019 I’ll never understand, especially with service this horrendous. We won’t be returning.

Yes I am a fan of this local and independently run restaurant. But it is because it keeps doing things well.

The Arboreal is an interesting venue if you like slightly rustic decor and a clean, fresh vibe. Service is good with friendly staff and the menu is interesting and varied. Pizzas are superb! A bit expensive but worth it for a treat.

I visited this evening with my teenage son for a catch up with a friend. The restaurant itself is very inviting with its shabby chic decor, and the staff very welcoming from the outset and attentive throughout. I was expecting a struggle to find something that my son would be excited to eat, but I really didn't need to worry. The menu was great, drinks lovely and to be honest we failed to find fault with our entire meal! We will definitely be visiting again soon... son in tow :)

The menu has changed here since my last visit and it has lost a little of its sparkle. However the Fishcakes and fries were very good indeed although a little less salt on the produce is advisable. Staff are friendly and the chefs particularly helpful. The sourced coffee alone is well worth a visit to sample. The restaurant decor is shabby/chic and my main concern is that is now more shabby than chic. For instance the chairs are losing their paint, the open kitchen looks tired and a number of ceiling lightbulbs are not working. Some of these issues can be easily sorted. A light lunch for 2 was £30 without service.

Nice atmosphere, friendly service, great veggie foood, mid range price, great coffee. We had a lovely Sunday brunch. Mashed avocado on sour dough toast with poached egg and excellent coffee. Will definitely visit again. Great to read a menu with a good choice for veggies. Give it a try.

Arboreal is my favourite 'go-to' eaterie for a great relaxed atmosphere, wonderful food, super friendly service and the loveliest decor: it's always so welcoming and last Saturday had such a great vibe! The sharing Meze boards are so delicious and there is literally nothing on the menu that isn't amazing. Even my kids adore it which says something about the type of place this is: you can enjoy a romantic night out or family supper or brunch. A restaurant that can make you feel welcome to that degree is pretty special in my book! Thanks for a great evening on both Friday AND Saturday this weekend. Oh, and the freshly made celery and orange juice on Sunday morning - those are going to be a regular hopefully?!

We have tried various other restaurants in the Vale but keep coming back to Arboreal, we've even started getting take outs from there!!

We went here this weekend to try the new menu after not being for while. I have to say it was absolutely awesome. They really do go the extra mile to offer great food in a great welcoming atmosphere. We have been coming here for years now and even if it is sometimes chaotic it really feels real. Every time we go back we always have the best welcome.

My partner an I have been to arboreal on several occasions and keep returning to try and work our way through the food and gin menu! The staff are very welcoming, and friendly and go above and beyond for you! Fabulous food options with lovely vegetarian Meals!

My partner and I ate Sunday lunch at Arboreal. This is a quaint little restaurant with a great vibe. The staff were friendly and made us feel very welcome. We could see the chefs cooking our meals in the open kitchen next to the wood burning oven. My wife had the chicken and I went for the pulled pork. Both were delicious. The chicken was moist and the pork was tender, perfect after a cold afternoon of shopping. The owner was working and was very attentive and checked back and brought extra veg and gravy after we requested some more. Overall a wonderful lunch and will definitely return to sample their new evening menu.

I just cant help coming back to this place. The staff, atmosphere and food is always great. There's something for everyone on the menu. My husband had the Ham Hock pie and chips and I had the BBQ Pizza. My daughter had the Steak in Diane sauce. Everything is prepared to such a high standard and the team always go out of their way to keep their customers happy. Ive eaten in most restaurants in Cowbridge but this is my favourite by a mile.

Visited on a Saturday with my friend and have to say that really underwhelmed. Not great service and drinks order forgotten twice. Asked about a dish on the menu and was told that a particular dish was ‘hench’. That was me me done at this point....

Honestly, our visit here wasn't horrendous, and if it wasn't for the price we paid nowhere near matching the service received, I probably wouldn't bother with this review. But as it is, the prices are high and as such, I expected a lot more.

Called in for lunch it was busy but a space was cleared within minutes and we were seated I had the flat bread with beef blue cheese and walnuts it was delicious and just the right portion for lunch my friend had the goats cheese salad which she also said was delicious definitely my favourite place to eat in cowbridge

Having had such a good experience here on evening visits we decided to try Sunday Lunch. Soup of the day and fish cakes to start, beef for mains and then Eton Mess to finish for my wife. Everything was excellent at a reasonable price, well cooked, well presented, definitely not pub grub. My wife said it was the best Eton Mess she has had. Staff are interested and helpful which sadly is not always the case these days. Food preparation is all on show which is both entertaining and honest.

I have to say, tonight was fantastic. We had 2 onglet steaks (ordered rare) and they were cooked to perfection, lamb special which was described as 'beautiful' and the chicken supreme with hot and sticky rub. Sides of rosemary and salt seasoned fries, sweet potato wedges and cauliflower cheese. All of it was perfect. Made my birthday night out we also had chicken wing starters and hamhock terrine. Flipping great!! Well done guys! We're all coming back soon. Really recommend.

This restaurant has been a firm favourite for the past year. Recently discovered their Sunday lunches. Normally I avoid Sunday lunches out as I’m really fussy. Not any more. Have had the roast beef twice now. Absolutely beautiful- perfectly cooked. Best roast I’ve had anywhere, hands down. Have just come back from there after the reindeer parade, even though they were really busy, everything was amazing. Bud is always brilliant. Just my favourite place. Lizzie

I was a little disappointed with this restaurant. Food was ok if a bit expensive for what it was. Room was cold. After visit a friend said they do set menus for 2 or 3 courses - wasn't offered this option.
