I received a RedLetter voucher for a six course tasting meal for Christmas 2023. Included in the voucher pack was a booklet outlining the different restaurants in which the voucher could be redeemed. We decided to book a six course tasting meal at the Angler in London. Prior to attending, we booked through the central booking centre and it was confirmed that this restaurant takes RedLetter vouchers. On the day of the booking, we travelled an hour to reach the restaurant and were told that the voucher was not valid. We explained that we had travelled a long way to get to the restaurant but they did not seem bothered and told us that it was simply a problem with the website that they were not able to address there and then. They told us they were not able to address the problem until Monday when the financial team were back in work. Obviously, this was an extremely disappointing experience. We were really looking forward to our tasting menu experience and wasted two hours travelling to and from the venue. The restaurant were completely unhelpful and asked us to sort the problem out ourselves by calling RedLetter days on Monday. Myself and my husband are both hospital doctors and do not have a lot of free time to waste travelling to restaurants to get turned away. This was extremely poor service from both RedLetter days and the Angler Restaurant

Where to start re this disappointing event? So not the first time there but I think it will be the last! There are three areas of concern 1/ Food It is clear as in all Restaurants cost pressures are biting into food but to visit and enjoy the Tasting menu but still leave hungry as dishes were reduced is baffling. 2/ Wine totally overpriced and not worth the price, just poor! 3/ a service charge of £60 for two people, for what?........£60 ! I would love to have left with the feeling of wow I had from previous visits but this definitely was anything but wow!

Three friends enjoyed the delicious tasting menu. We met earlier for fizz in the bar which was perfect then went through to the spacious window table. Service was perfect, right down to the lovely lady who kept topping up our water glasses with chilled tap water throughout the evening! The one suggestion is to improve the range of wines and prices. With only a handful of bottles under the £100 mark you do feel a bit pressurised. I eat at D& D regularly so i know as well as great fine wines they could include a selection of more affordable wines - similar to Coq dArgent wine list for example. Otherwise a great evening, great setting and fabulous service!!

Having eaten at a number of high end restaurants around London, my wife and I were looking forward to eat at Angler as being a Michelin starred restaurant with a seafood focus. Whilst we had an ok experience, we left underwhelmed, as with other reviews, the restaurant lacked atmosphere and the food lacked depth and flavour. We went for the tasting menu and whilst some of the dishes (like the prawn) was sublime, others missed the mark. The deserts were really poor quality for the price being paid e.g. white chocolate tart the separates from it's cardboardy base as you eat it However the the item that really let the restaurant down was the service - I would hope the restaurant really looks this aspect as a matter of priority - whilst all of the staff was nice, they constantly seemed to be on the verge of chaos - we were served dishes without explanations being given - only to ask someone else to explain. Additionally when my wife went to the toilet, the decided to serve us the next course - this is despite asking the waiting staff where the loo was. We went for the 2pm sitting, which ran until 4 o clock, at which point staff were clearing and preparing for service for the next sitting (presumably) - nothing like spending £300+ on a meal and being made to feel unwanted. Whilst we are glad we tried it, we won't be revisiting - as an example we ate a five fields a month earlier which we will definitely be returning to, as it felt a treat - Angler just didn't.

Really nice food but overall experience was massively let down by Pierre who was sullen and rude. Our bill had three incorrect items on it which weren’t ours but when we complained he seemed very unhappy and never apologised. Unfortunately he was also on the desk when we left and didn’t say a word when we asked for our coats, just looked like it was beneath him. Don’t work in the service industry if you don’t want to be polite to people! His bad attitude tarnished our experience and my husband’s birthday

Went on a weekday , week before Christmas and it wasn't very busy, yet was seated right next to another table of 2, even though most of the tables where empty. Overall ambiance was quiet and has a smart/semi formal vibe to it, probably good for business dinners/dates. Opted to take two tasting menus at 155 each which seemed abit pricey at a 1 star designation, but thought if the food is good then worth it. Servers were attentive and polite but they seemed lacking in confidence when announcing dishes and one of the descriptions of the dish was inaccurate. Didn't seemed as refined as other Michelin stars I've been to. Food wise, individual elements were very well cooked but most of the courses didn't seem to have coherence and/or didn't really work. For example the venison, whilst cooked perfectly, had a sauce without much punch to it accompanying it and also had a barbecued pear and a kebab. Whilst these elements individually tasted good they didn't seem to link together in one dish (pear too sweet to match the venison). The best and only memorable dish i'd recommend was the langoustine, this was cooked to perfection and the sauce was delicious. The sea bass tartar and crab salad were good but not exceptional and perhaps slightly lacked on flavour. The signature cod was well cooked but once again the sauce had little to no flavour and there was just a drizzle of it on the plate. Squid was also on the plate but it didn't link well to the cod and/or sauce and felt abit like a random accompaniment. Desserts were okay and of the two the cardamon ice cream was definitely the better (gianduja chocolate cake was other). The petit fours were the only thing which i would definitely not eat again, the chocolate filling was excessively sweet. At this price point, I would not try it again against other Michelin star restaurants or be able to recommend it.

We had the tasting menu and enjoyed every moment. The amuse bouches were heavenly and each of the three starters were divine - sea-bass tartare, followed by Devon flaked crab and the mouthwatering langoustine with parmesan gnocchi. Two fish mains, monkfish and turbot, the turbot was the star main for me - beautifully cooked with delicate flavours to accompany the fish. Puddings did not disappoint either. Every year we go to London for a "foodie" break, eating out at Michelin-starred restaurants and of the four we went to, the Angler came very much last. We were seated in a quieter part of the restaurant with just another couple at the next table so felt removed from the atmosphere of the other diners. This also resulted in us being rather forgotten about for most of the time. We waited for ages just for the drinks menu to order an aperitif, and when it came it was just a very limited selection on one side - we were then given the menus and ordered the tasting menu - the food started to arrive before we were served our pre-dinner drinks. We also had to ask for a wine list. The courses arrived rather haphazardly - at first the canapes and first courses came so quickly we felt as if they were trying to rush us through, then there were long waits. The food didn't have the "wow" factor the other restaurants had, in fact the cod smelled and tasted very fishy, which implied it was not the freshest. Both the waitress and the sommelier were inattentive with us being left with empty water glasses and having to refill our wine glasses ourselves, which shouldn't be the case with a restaurant of this standard. All in all a disappointing evening - I should have refused to pay the service charge but didn't want to make a fuss.

Poor service; we were seated and then ignored - took ages just to get a drink; then had to ask for the wine list. First of all courses came too quickly and before our drinks arrived, so we felt rushed, then long waits between courses; forgotten by sommelier and had to fill our own wine glasses, which is not something you expect in a Michelin starred restaurant. The cod smelled very fishy which generally means it wasn't as fresh as it could have been. Not the standard we had been expecting especially compared to other restaurants we have been to.

This was our second visit to Angler, the first being immediately before lockdown when the circumstances were a little bit unreal. We had the tasting menu, and whilst we were worried about the cost we decided that the best is worth paying for and it was just that. The flavours and the tastes were indescribable with Caroline claiming that each course was her favourite in Portuguese to our waiter who came from that country but still spoke perfect English so that I didn't feel left out. Food and wine pairings were outstanding. Although the staff were helpful and polite (the sommelier especially was great), the overall experience was let down a bit by the service - felt quite understaffed, particularly at the beginning of the evening when we were waiting for a considerable amount of time for our initial drinks to arrive (the appetisers arrived before our drinks). Other small things like the wine glasses all having lint/dust on the outside of the glass, presumably from being polished with an overly damp cloth. Ambience was fair - didn’t feel like a particularly intimate dining room. We were initially sat at a table closest to the entrance which was less than ideal as it was a main thoroughfare for waiters, and for guests arriving/leaving with the elevators dinging regularly. Our second table was an improvement, but they really need to get soft-close wine fridges.. the regular banging of the fridge doors was a bit disruptive to the experience. Overall an enjoyable evening, but didn’t feel up to the standard of other Michelin-level restaurants.

Wonderful food, beautifully served. My only complaint and one which did not permit me to award 'Outstanding' at the beginning of the survey, concerned the excessive exposure to heat and to sunlight, despite there being mechanical shades. The staff either wouldn't or couldn't lower them for us. As a result, we were uncomfortably hot and/or dazzled for much of our meal. I would need reassurance on this point before contemplating a further visit.

I don’t understand how they got a Michelin star. Food: There was nothing extraordinary with the food. The flavors are common and did not surprise me at all. It gave me nostalgia about foods I used to it growing up but that’s it. The appetizers and desserts were better than the mains. The seafood/fish were not exemplary at all. Some of the sauces overpowered the fish instead of complimenting them. Service: Mediocre service. Was trying to make a conversation with the server but he did not seem to care at all. They were not even busy given very minimal guests that night. There were probably 3-4 of them serving everyone. On my reservation and while dining, we told them it was my birthday. Nothing special was done except a happy birthday note on a chocolate slab which is part of the dessert. Not even a sign of geniune excitement or care. Ambience: Setting looks like a typical hotel restaurant. We went on a Friday expecting that it will be packed. To our surprise, there were very few of us and a lot of vacant tables. This alone speaks volumes.

The “stunning views over the London skyline” is rather using poetic justice - but heck with food like this who wants to look outside!! There looks to be a fabulous bar outside the main restaurant - it was covered whilst we were there with poor weather but I should think this would be great on a summers evening This was truly one of the best meals I’ve had in London and well done to all the team at Angler

We booked a trip to London and to the South Place Hotel and Angler for my daughters 13th birthday, originally this was through a charity auction by IMPULSE DECISIONS. I’d already seen reviews on here suggesting if you prepay you get a reduced tasting menu so I checked after paying over £1600 for the experience that we would be getting the full tasting menu and was told yes. The hotel itself is beautiful, however I ordered cake and balloons to the room for our arrival, no balloons and when we went for a drink on the terrace was rudely told we could not have a drink there as we weren’t booked in the restaurant even though we were! When we went for the meal we realised pretty quickly we were being treated differently to the other paying guests receiving a cheaper 5-course menu with no scallops, prawns etc. we were given a pork sausage roll as one course! The sommelier didn’t even pour us a glass of wine all evening when we had bought a bottle. When I complained the staff knew we were being ripped off and we got told that we would be refunded the meal. Because we had prepaid this has never forthcoming, with just our drinks being refunded. On top of this we went down for a drink in the bar at 9.30 on a Saturday evening and was told they were no longer serving even though we were staying in the hotel. Since the experience I have emailed the hotel twice and impulse decisions with no response. Thanks for ruining what was meant to be a special day for my daughter! Hope my review warns others not to book through Impulse or prepay. There are much better Michelin star establishments to choose from

Food was nice but lack of atmosphere in the restaurant along with the speedy service unfortunately didn’t make me feel like I was in a Michelin restaurant. After visiting other Michelin starred restaurants in London, I was very much looking forward to the tasting menu my partner had booked us for my birthday treat. The food was very well presented but I did find some of them lacked a little bit of depth and flavour. The bread and starters however were delicious and the cod was cooked to perfection. Unfortunately I found the service was a little rushed, we had been given the first course before we eventually ordered our wine. It would be nice for drinks to be offered and served before any food appeared. My parter had to stop two different waiters in order to order our drinks, else I wonder if we would have been on course 5 before we were offered any. It also felt as if as soon as the last spoonful was in my mouth, the plates were swooped away. In other restaurants it’s been about the experience as well as the food, which I feel this restaurant lacked. As it got darker, the restaurant did start to have a little more atmosphere. All in all, the food was nice but I wasn’t amazed with anything and if I didn’t know it was Michelin starred, I wouldn’t have guessed.

Not convinced this restaurant will retain its star. Some courses were lovely, but others were a bit bland. The service was hit and miss. We were one of the first tables sat, but one of the last to leave as other tables got each course before us. We are not sure why. Pretty sure they forgot about us for the Chicken dish as there was a huge wait between the previous course and that one (45 mins or so). They have fancy tap water bottles that they don't want to leave on the table, and small water glasses. They do not refill them regularly, although they do top up your wine very regularly - likely as they make money from that.

Verging on the slightly too long between courses as it looked like they were catching up a nearby table to us, but it was fine as we were there for a leisurely lunch. My only negative observation is that even by fine dining standards, drinks were at the very top end of pricing - £20 for a cocktail or a glass of champagne. Delicious food, but painfully slow service. We were there for 3.5 hours. If you’re happy waiting 10-15 minutes between courses and to pay the bill, then this place is for you.

Ok so I genuinely feel very torn whilst writing this review as a couple of dishes were beautiful as one one of the wine pairings but this restaurant needs some work, we did not have a voucher, we opted for the full tasting menu and wine pairing and the atmosphere in the restaurant and service was not good, it was very quiet for a Saturday, perhaps because we had a late lunch booking but there was no background music, the staff were not attentive enough (except for the sommelier) and we had a few issues with the food… The snacks were really good, favourite was probably the cheesy truffle tart or foie gras cornetto although it reminded me of another 2 Michelin star restaurant dessert ‘Paddington’ Sea bass tarter to start was beautiful – perfect balance of creaminess, acidity and sweet. At this point we were like ok so the ambience is a bit crap but that was fantastic so we’ll let it go. Next it was hand-picked devon crab and the presentation was 10/10, I’m sorry to say that as soon as my husband took his first bite he crunched down on a huge bit of crab shell and broke his tooth. The dish got taken back to the kitchen and we heard the chef shouting extremely loudly to the kitchen staff. On top of that they didn’t believe that my husband found shell because he kept it on his bread plate, so they genuinely came out to tell us they couldn’t see the shell – picture attached for effect, it was bloody huge! So both of our dishes were taken away before we got to taste them and they were remade entirely. This took forever, our wine pairings for this course had to be topped up, the only person communicating with us at this point was the sommelier – he was fantastic and as it’s taken me so long to write this review I can no longer remember his name but I hope he’s still there running the show. The waiting staff were inexperienced and young, no one from the kitchen or the waiting staff truly apologised or explained that we would now have a bit of a wait on our hands. This surprised me more than anything to be honest! So our crab arrives again, my husband bless him is a bit scared to eat this course again but thankfully no shell was found! I really loved this dish but I felt like the experience had just totally been ruined by how badly the situation had been dealt with, it’s ok for mistakes to happen but ignoring the problem does not help. The sommelier definitely helped things along here, we got an extra course with the premium wine pairing, but again it took a very long time to arrive – it was a take on French onion soup with lots of cheesy truffley goodness. The wine pairing was absolutely stunning and has ruined wine for me forever so this was perhaps my favourite experience to take away from the day. We’re pretty much the only ones in the restaurant now and I feel like the staff are giving us evil eyes and I’m willing the courses to be rushed out but nope, still taking forever. Next up was the lobster ravioli and it was awful, the filling was like a savoury custard, if there was lobster in there I couldn’t tell because it didn’t taste like it and the texture was just rubber. I’m not sure if it’s just a mixing problem because my husband’s wasn’t as bad?! Next up was the cod which was cooked nicely and then the venison which was fine but nothing mind blowing Same goes for the rhubarb pudding too. If I am completely honest, I don’t think this restaurant is worthy of a Michelin star, perhaps Michelin need to take a visit there! As we were leaving, the sommelier emphasised that he will be making lots of changes and hoped we would return but I’m probably not going to when I’ve been to some restaurants recently without Michelin stars and have enjoyed them ten fold. Such a shame!

Absolutely worst experience. Rushed from pre dinner drinks to table. Rushed to order. Rude impatient mumbling waiter. He actually eye rolled and snapped menus away from us half way through ordering. Awful. Then got overcharged on our bill for drinks -£52 for a Cosmo?

The restaurant is on the top floor of the hotel and there is little if any indication that it is there. You feel that your Google maps are lying to you. The service. The restaurant wasn’t busy. Service was generally friendly. I ordered the tasting menu. Then the food started to arrive. I began to think, this water is nice, but I haven’t seen a wine list. I looked around, it was quiet but I couldn’t see any other table with wine. I began to wonder if it was a dry restaurant. A course or three in and the food was ok to good but not exceptional and I thought that I wouldn’t raise the wine issue as I did not want to increase my spend. The dishes continued to come and nothing particularly stood out. There is delicate and there is taking it too far. In my view the dishes lacked depth and richness of flavour. The cod dish was particularly disappointing, it needed something other than to make the dish simply a bit of cod on a plate. Depth, flavour, etc. There is so much that can be done with fine dining seafood. This isn’t it.

We celebrated our anniversary at the Angler last week. While the food was great, we left feeling disappointed. We were seated very close to the servers station and it was difficult to have any kind of close conversation because the servers were standing right over us for the majority of the meal. We were so close that we could hear their conversation as much as we could hear their own. Strangely, at the beginning of each course, the servers came to explain what was being presented, but they talked so quietly to us (in an already very quiet restaurant), that we never really understood what they were saying. The food was tasty and we enjoyed our meal, but we unfortunately didn't get the Michelin experience that we'd expected. For such an acclaimed restaurant, and for such a high bill, we hoped to be "wowed". We had looked forward to this restaurant for the entire trip. Again, it was tasty, but there was something missing. I feel uncomfortable listing complaints when all in all we had a nice meal, but we paid $425 USD and left feeling unsatisfied with our experience. We visited many other restaurants in London that were much more affordable, flavorful, had great ambiance and incredible service-I recommend saving your money and visiting those places instead.

I went to celebrate my wife's 40th and it was a fantastic way to celebrate the day. We decided to have the tasting menu, and it was one awesome dish after the other being served. The staff were attentive without being intrusive, friendly and very knowledgeable.

Needing a special location for dinner with a dear friend and business contact, I found The Angler, noted the Michelin ranking and thought I'd give it a go. I / we certainly weren't disappointed - whilst it was quiet this was perfectly understandable given a combination of half term and rail strike day. Service was top class, the food outstanding - the amuse bouches / intermediary dishes superb - and given the overall offering, the price not excessive for one of the best meals I've tasted - and dining experiences - in recent months. If I had to make a tiny gripe (and yes, this is a first world problem) it was the portion size for the Tokai was laughably small - barely a mouthful - but perhaps that's why it was priced 'competitively'. I'd go back again in a heartbeat.

We dined here earlier in the week and found it to be a very special experience from the moment we arrived. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable. I can honestly say the crab with wasabi is the best thing I have ever tasted, a taste sensation and I don't usually like crab. It was so fresh! A real treat, we will certainly return again in the future.

Easily one of the best plates of food I’ve eaten in quite a few years. Great place to eat. We will be coming back. Well done
